  • Kushikatsu Tanaka and Uotami Use Chinese Vegetables — 5ch Reacts: “I’m Done Going to Yayoiken”

A Daily Shincho article has revealed the origins of the vegetables used by restaurant chains. While yakitori chain Torikizoku responded that its vegetables, chicken, and pickles are all domestically sourced, it turned out that Kushikatsu Tanaka and Uotami — while not using Chinese-grown napa cabbage — do use many other Chinese-grown vegetables. On 5ch, the thread saw estimates that a meal made entirely with domestic vegetables would cost over 2,000 yen, arguments that it’s odd to single out vegetables when chicken, pork, and beef are already predominantly imported, and debate over the safety of Chinese-grown vegetables themselves.

    (Excerpt)

Torikizoku, a yakitori chain that operates stores across Asia and even in North America, notes on its official website that “(processed foods) … the food ingredients used may include those sourced from overseas,” but nonetheless stated that “vegetables, chicken, and side dishes like pickles are all domestically sourced.”

Meanwhile, Kushikatsu Tanaka and Uotami — whose signs are a common sight in entertainment districts — both reported not using Chinese-grown napa cabbage, but did use a wide variety of other Chinese-grown vegetables as ingredients.

Chicken, pork, beef — it's already flooded with imports, so insisting only the vegetables be domestic is the weird part, if you ask me.

I go to the supermarket and domestic cabbage and domestic napa cabbage are like 200 yen each, right?
Domestic carrots are about 80 yen apiece too.
Even after paying steep shipping costs to import from China, is it actually cheaper than that?

It's not that they're using instantly lethal poisons — the problem is chemicals that build up in the body and cause illness years or decades later.
The kind of dubious, maybe-never-actually-inspected products ordinary Chinese citizens buy at street stalls or supermarkets are things senior Communist Party officials would never eat themselves; separately produced, safety-guaranteed food exists just for them.
Some ordinary citizens aren't stupid either, which is why foreign-capital supermarkets with strict inspection standards have become popular.

It's local production for local consumption.
For food eaten locally, you don't need preservatives or coloring.
The risky stuff is the export-grade produce, which has to look good to sell — and because it's for export, preservatives get added so it can survive the long haul in transit.

Wait, isn't this about eating out?

Background and key points of this discussion

At Japanese restaurants, the country-of-origin labeling requirements mandatory for fresh produce at retail generally don’t apply — it’s left up to each company to voluntarily disclose the information or not. The article behind this discussion was likewise based on interviews with and voluntary responses from each chain. Opinions on the thread split over whether to prioritize price or safety: some pointed out that insisting on domestic vegetables would sharply raise the cost of eating out, while others held firm that they wanted to avoid Chinese-grown vegetables altogether due to concerns over pesticide residue and additives. It’s also worth noting that every company added the caveat that processed foods may contain overseas-sourced ingredients, meaning the country of origin can vary by store or menu item. Some posts in the thread also touched on consumption patterns within China and the diets of Communist Party officials, but these reflect individual posters’ personal accounts rather than claims backed by public verification.

Voice actress Moana Shirase updated her X account by September 29, announcing her retirement from voice acting. According to Nikkan Sports, she described the move as “a positive choice made with an eye toward the rest of my life,” and said she plans to delete her account soon as well. On the 5ch Geinou/Sports News+ thread, users expressed surprise that her only credited role was in “100 Girlfriends Who Really, Really, Really, Really, Really Love You,” shared details about the sales performance of her idol unit “Tsubomi Symphony,” and voiced broader frustration with the harsh income structure of the voice acting industry as a whole — turning the discussion from one individual’s story into a debate about the state of the industry.

    Re: #118
    20 people is way too few — there's probably 100 to 200

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Japan’s voice acting industry is said to have far fewer major job openings than the number of talent signed to agencies, so only a small handful at the top actually earn a living from it. Points raised in the thread — like the claim that “only those near the top of the pyramid actually make money,” or that “you can’t keep doing this unless your family is well-off” — reflect structural issues commonly discussed across the whole industry, not something unique to this case. It’s worth noting that this retirement is an official announcement covered by the sports newspaper Nikkan Sports, sourced from her own X post — this is a documented, real event, not speculation. On the other hand, while many commenters expressed surprise at how “unknown” she was given her thin résumé, voice actresses who belong to idol-style units often have individual acting credits that don’t stand out much by nature, so a mismatch between name recognition and actual track record is easy to misread. No solid information about the reason for her retirement emerged in the thread, and a lot of the comments never got past speculation.

  • DeNA Announces First Round of 10 Roster Cuts, Including Fujinami and Kozono

DeNA reportedly issued first-round roster cut notices on September 29 to 10 players in total — 6 on the active roster, including pitchers Shintaro Fujinami, Kenta Kozono, and Chihaya Sasaki, plus 4 development-squad players. On 5channel threads, the main topic was Kozono’s stalled development, given he joined the team as a first-round pick contested by multiple clubs out of high school and is now facing this notice in his fifth year, with many posts comparing his fate to that of high school pitchers from the same draft class who went to other teams. There was also plenty of speculation about where Fujinami might end up next, with some predicting this first round of cuts won’t be the last.

On the 29th, DeNA issued roster cut notices to six active-roster players — pitchers Shintaro Fujinami, Kenta Kozono, Chihaya Sasaki, Hayato Horioka, and Hayate Nakagawa, plus outfielder Ayato Inoue — along with four development-squad players: infielder Kenji Nishimaki, pitcher Ryunosuke Matsumoto, infielder Sou Ogasawara, and catcher Taiga Kondo. With this first round already topping 10 players, it looks set to be an offseason of major roster turnover.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

NPB’s roster cut notices begin every year in late September, starting with each team announcing its ‘first-round’ list of released players, followed by a second round of notices and shifts to development contracts before final rosters are settled by year’s end. The 10 players named this time include both active-roster and development-squad players, and the article alone doesn’t make clear that development contracts differ from active-roster contracts in terms of treatment and re-signing conditions. Kozono, who became the focus of the thread’s discussion, was a highly touted prospect who joined the team as a first-round pick contested by multiple clubs out of high school, and his results became a point of comparison against other high school pitchers drafted around the same time by other teams. That said, internal team matters such as individual development progress or injury history can’t be determined from the thread posts alone, so caution is warranted before drawing firm conclusions. As for where Fujinami might transfer to, the discussion never goes beyond rumor, and an official announcement will need to be awaited.

  • Employment Rate Among Seniors 65+ Hits Record High of 26.0% — 5ch: ‘Working Helps Keep Dementia at Bay’

According to statistical topics released by the Statistics Bureau of Japan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, the employment rate among people aged 65 and over reached 26.0% in 2025, up 0.3 percentage points from the previous year. Employment rates hit record highs across every age bracket — 65–69, 70–74, and 75 and over — meaning roughly one in four people 65 or older is now working. On 5ch, opinions split between those who see the figure as evidence that more elderly people are being forced to work just to get by, and those who view it as a matter of choice — working to stay healthy and maintain a sense of purpose. The thread also sparked discussion about the rising pension eligibility age and the changing shape of Japan’s retirement system.

    (…)

The employment rate for people 65 and older is 26.0%. All three brackets — 65–69, 70–74, and 75+ — hit record highs.

Let’s start with the overall picture. According to statistical topics released by the Statistics Bureau on September 20, 2026, the employment rate for people 65 and older in 2025 was 26.0%, up 0.3 percentage points from the previous year. That means roughly one in four people 65 or older is working.

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

Retirement used to typically come around age 55, but revisions to the Act on Stabilization of Employment of Elderly Persons have since made a 60-year-old retirement age with employment secured up to 65 the norm, while the age at which pension payments begin has also been raised in stages. In the thread, opinions split between seeing the statistic as evidence that more elderly people are being forced to keep working just to make ends meet, and seeing it as a voluntary choice to keep working while still healthy — and neither explanation alone fully accounts for the trend. In practice, the rising employment rate likely reflects both a growing number of people whose pensions alone aren’t enough to live on, and a growing number of healthy elderly people who are able to keep working thanks to longer healthy life expectancy. It’s also worth noting that the growth in non-regular employment is concentrated among people in their early 70s — a reflection of the fact that post-retirement rehiring is often structured as non-regular work, which is a different phenomenon from simply ‘staying on’ as a full-time regular employee.

  • Is There Really an Afterlife? 5ch Weighs In: “Nobody’s Ever Actually Died, So How Would We Know”

A thread titled “Ghosts and the afterlife are 100% just made up, right?” appeared on 5ch’s general discussion board, sparking a split in opinion over whether ghosts and the afterlife are real. Alongside the point that no one has ever died and come back, so the claim can be neither proven nor disproven, some argued against their existence citing the brain’s electrical signals and the law of conservation of energy, while others left room for the possibility, noting how much of the universe remains unknown. The thread also brought up the story that physicist Erwin Schrödinger believed individual consciousness returns to one great universal mind after death — turning the discussion into something more nuanced than a simple yes-or-no debate.

Consciousness is a phenomenon produced by electrical signals in the brain — so once the body's physical life-functions stop, what exactly would go on producing a mind? If you want to argue that spirits DO exist, the burden's on you to explain that part first.

    Re: #98
That's more for the benefit of the people left behind.
The person actually dying probably isn't thinking anything at that point.

Background and Key Points of This Debate

By definition, the only way to verify claims about the afterlife or ghosts would be to ask someone who has died — which puts the question in territory science can neither prove nor disprove. The thread split along a fault line in how people read that unverifiability: some took it as “so it’s fair to call it fiction,” others as “so no definitive conclusion can be drawn either way.” It’s a genuinely documented anecdote that physicist Erwin Schrödinger wrote that he believed individual consciousness returns to some larger universal mind after death, and the thread noted the irony of a towering figure in quantum mechanics holding what looks like an unscientific view of death. Meanwhile, the counter-argument tying the brain’s-electrical-signals explanation of consciousness to the conservation of energy left a loose end of its own: electrical signals dissipating as heat and the separate question of whether “consciousness is conserved” are two different issues, and the thread wrapped up without ever fully untangling them.

*This article is an excerpt and summary of the 5ch (Nandemo Jikkyo G) thread “Ghosts and the afterlife are 100% just made up, right?“

  • Miyamoto: ‘Ocarina of Time’ and ‘Princess Mononoke’ Had Shockingly Similar Material

During development of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Shigeru Miyamoto said in a 1999 interview that he was surprised by how much the “material” of the game overlapped with Hayao Miyazaki’s Princess Mononoke, which came out around the same time — and the remark has become a hot topic on 5ch’s hardware/industry board. Sparked by his comment that a horse-riding protagonist and a giant creature ended up in both works by coincidence, the thread saw a string of posts cross-checking timelines to figure out “which one thought of it first.” Discussion also spread to the personnel ties between Nintendo’s art department and Studio Ghibli, along with claims that later entries in the series resemble past works, turning this into more than just a simple “ripoff” debate.

Right after finishing The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Shigeru Miyamoto discussed the influence he took from Hayao Miyazaki’s film Princess Mononoke in an interview in the February 1999 issue of the gaming magazine Gēmujin. What’s interesting is that it wasn’t just a case of being influenced — he recalled that the two works, made in production at almost the same time, ended up with “material that was shockingly similar” once finished.

During development, staff had floated ideas of using a unicorn or an elk instead of a horse. In the end, Miyamoto decided, “Let’s go with a horse” — and he said Princess Mononoke played a part in that decision. However, Miyamoto didn’t go into detail about exactly how Princess Mononoke influenced the “let’s go with a horse” call.

He then talked about a similarity involving a mounted archer and a giant Goron. Miyamoto pointed to the scene of Link firing a bow while riding on horseback, and the scene of a giant Goron walking with a mountain in the background. While working on these, he recalled, “it turned out that was basically Ashitaka and the Daidarabotchi — I was honestly floored.”

Maybe when Zelda drew on ancient Japanese elements, it just happened to overlap with Princess Mononoke
    Japan is amazing
Though with BotW and TotK it feels less like an overlap and more like they deliberately layered it on

Background and Key Points of This Topic

The source is an interview in the February 1999 issue of the gaming magazine Gēmujin, and the backdrop is that Ocarina of Time (released 1998, about 3 years in development) was made at nearly the same time as Princess Mononoke (released 1997, 16 years of conception plus 3 years of production). In the thread, posts checking timelines to determine “which one was conceived first” stood out, but Miyamoto’s own comment wasn’t about “imitation” — he described a coincidental overlap where “the material happened to be similar,” not an admission of copying. That distinction is easy to miss, and the quoted portion of the article doesn’t claim a direct influence either. Another point of discussion was the personnel ties between Nintendo and Ghibli: it was noted that Yoichi Kotabe, who served as art director, had a background as an animator alongside Isao Takahata and Hayao Miyazaki, leading some to frame it less as straightforward copying and more as “the same lineage of creators arriving at similar expressions.” Others pointed to similarities in titles after Breath of the Wild, broadening the discussion from Ocarina of Time alone to the art style of the series as a whole.

  • Ishii Izuha’s Birthday Event Ticket Results Are In — Wave of Rejections Has 5ch Asking ‘Wait, Is Ressa Actually Popular?’

Ticket results have been announced for Tsubaki Factory member Izuha Ishii’s birthday event, scheduled for November 4, 2026 at the Sumida Ward Hikifune Culture Center Theater Hall. Many fans won tickets for the first session but lost out on the second, and some said it was the first time they’d ever been rejected for one of “Ressa’s” (her nickname, derived from “red panda”) birthday events. On 5ch’s Hello! Project board, posts piled up griping about the venue size, guessing at the MC guest, and expressing shock at how many people got shut out — including comments like “Wait, is Ressa actually popular?” The day’s guest has so far only been revealed via silhouette, sparking a flurry of posts trying to guess who it is.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

For Hello! Project birthday events, venue size is often watched closely as a rough gauge of a member’s popularity and drawing power. This time’s venue, the Hikifune Culture Center Theater Hall, has a relatively small seating capacity, which fueled complaints on the thread about the agency’s venue choice, alongside comments like “Ressa could easily fill a 1000-seat venue.” That said, ticket results can vary depending on the lottery system, how many tickets each person applies for, and recent attendance figures, so the mere fact that some fans were rejected doesn’t necessarily mean a sudden surge in popularity. There have been rejections at past birthday events too, so this occurrence may not be as unusual as it seems — though that’s hard to confirm from thread comments alone, it’s worth keeping in mind. Meanwhile, since the day’s guest was only teased via silhouette, the thread also lit up with fans trying to guess their identity.

  • University of Tokyo Names First-Ever Woman President; Calls Selection a ‘Comprehensive Judgment’ — 5ch Smells a Fix

On September 29, the University of Tokyo announced it had chosen its first-ever woman as its new president. According to an Asahi Shimbun report, the selection wasn’t a direct reflection of the “preference vote” cast by faculty and staff, but rather a “comprehensive” decision. In the related thread on 5ch’s Breaking News Plus board, some questioned whether the candidate chosen — the runner-up in the preference vote rather than the top vote-getter — was picked mainly because she’s a woman. Others noted that Japan’s Ministry of Education has long pushed national universities not to weight president selections too heavily toward vote results, and pointed to similar cases at Osaka University and Kyoto University where the top vote-getter wasn’t chosen either, suggesting this isn’t unique to the University of Tokyo.

    143AnonymousSep 29, 2026 12:57
First off, ever since incorporation, the Ministry of Education has been telling universities, in the name of stronger governance, to stop directly turning preference-vote results into the president selection outcome.

"Selection methods that reflect vote results directly in the selection committee's decision, or that otherwise lean too heavily on in-house opinion, aren't appropriate from the standpoint of the committee exercising independent judgment."

As a result, picking a second-place-or-lower candidate, or scrapping the vote altogether, has become pretty normal everywhere, honestly.

Background and key points of this topic

The backdrop here is the 2014 revision of the School Education Act and the National University Corporation Act. National university president selections used to follow a practice where the faculty/staff “preference vote” results were reflected almost directly, but after the legal revision, the vote was repositioned as mere reference information, with the selection committee holding final say. In the thread, posters cited this history and pointed to Osaka University (2021) and Kyoto University (2026), where candidates who hadn’t placed first in the preference vote were likewise chosen, suggesting this isn’t a practice unique to the University of Tokyo. That said, it’s easy to overlook that the preference vote is purely advisory and carries no legal binding force, so a mismatch between the vote and the final selection is itself within the range the system anticipates. It should also be noted that the University of Tokyo hasn’t officially released its actual vote counts, so the numbers discussed in the thread are unverified. Whether the substance of the “comprehensive judgment” was really about promoting a woman or about hopes for university reform remains unclear even from the article itself.

  • Terraria for Xbox Finally Launches in Japan — 5ch Reacts: ‘That Took Forever’

On September 29, 2026, Terraria for Xbox One finally went on sale in Japan. This complete edition includes 15 years’ worth of updates and comes with official Japanese-language support. While Japanese versions had long been available on PC, Switch, and mobile, the Xbox version remained unreleased in Japan for years. Discussion threads debated why the Xbox version alone was left behind, touching on how Spike Chunsoft (the company holding Japanese distribution rights) had localized the PS3 version through its own workaround, and splitting over whether this was a genuine contractual “exclusive” or simply a business decision.

Back in the day this game's code made Japanese localization a massive pain to implement.

Sounds like they've since rebuilt it to make localization easier, and the original devs finally got official Japanese support working.

    There's precedent for this.

Take Metal Gear Rising — its Japanese release got cancelled right before the Xbox 360 launch, and sites like Hachima (a gaming blog) piled on saying 'it's because it won't sell in Japan!' But it later came out that it was actually a Japan-only PlayStation exclusivity deal, which got exposed by the fact that even the Steam version is still region-locked in Japan to this day.

The reason these domestic exclusivity deals never get made public is that they'd flat-out violate antitrust law.

    Re: #24

    42AnonymousSep 29, 2026 12:48
Credit where it's due — Spike Chunsoft's hack-job localization back then was impressive.
But updates were noticeably delayed partly because of their own custom item additions, and honestly that part's hard to defend lol.

    Re: #20
Spike Chunsoft held the sales rights in Japan, so it never came to Xbox there (though you could still buy it from overseas stores, which fall under 505 Games' territory). Japanese support was added to the Xbox version maybe 1-2 years ago, and now, finally, it's gone on sale on the Japanese Xbox store today.

    'A lot' is an understatement.
    Per year, roughly:
    Steam: 12,000 titles
    Switch: 4,000 titles
    PS5: 2,000 titles
    Xbox: 1,000 titles

    That's just how it is.

    Re: #45
    Exactly right.
The fact that it released normally on platforms that didn't even exist at the time the contract was signed suggests this wasn't platform exclusivity at all, but rather an exclusion clause naming specific platforms — what people call 'block rights.'
    47AnonymousSep 29, 2026 12:49
Wait, so there was a 15-year exclusivity deal signed way back then?
Was it really that big a title at the time?
    51AnonymousSep 29, 2026 12:52
    Re: #47
There was no contract or anything.
Spike Chunsoft simply didn't release it on Xbox because they figured it wouldn't sell.
The official build didn't have the capacity to support Japanese (multi-byte characters).

Once they overhauled the engine and the official version could handle Japanese, a Japanese Xbox version became possible too. That's the whole story.
    53AnonymousSep 29, 2026 12:54
    Re: #47
Just like Re: #34 says — it was treated as a rival to Minecraft after Minecraft got ported to Xbox, and Sony pushed it hard as a near-first-party title and sponsor.
    56AnonymousSep 29, 2026 12:55
If they were paying money to block it, they'd block the Switch version.
Paying money just to keep blocking the Xbox version — which barely sells anyway — makes no logical sense.
And 'there was no Switch back then!' is a dumb argument — that's just not how exclusivity deals work.
    66AnonymousSep 29, 2026 13:03
    Re: #65
The Xbox One didn't exist back then either, though 😅
    That argument's a stretch.

    Re: #66
The PS4/One versions came out 10 months after the PS3/360 versions (already scheduled for release), whereas Switch came out years and years later — so there's nothing strange about that timeline.
    72AnonymousSep 29, 2026 13:09
Speaking of Spike Chunsoft, is not releasing Shiren 6 on PlayStation also some kind of 'block rights' thing, I wonder?
    73AnonymousSep 29, 2026 13:10
    Re: #67
Well, that's probably also why so many recent Japanese games are Steam/Switch-only these days.

    Re: #72
    Re: #73
It always comes down to this.

No contracts involved — Xbox just got left out because it doesn't sell.
Now it's PlayStation's turn to get the same treatment.
From a console-war ("geha") standpoint, that's just fine, isn't it?

The conspiracy theories from Xbox loyalists are exhausting.
    85AnonymousSep 29, 2026 13:16
    Re: #72
Apparently 'it doesn't sell' is the go-to reason whenever something skips PlayStation and Xbox.

    Re: #72
5plus didn't sell all that well on Vita, but once it got ported to Switch and PC — platforms with plenty of spec headroom — it took off. So they got motivated, made 6, and supplied it to the platforms that were actually selling well. Series sales record updated. Guess they don't need PlayStation.

That's really all there is to it.

Background and Key Points of Debate

Terraria launched in 2011 as a sandbox game. At the time, the Xbox 360 version had trouble supporting multi-byte characters (i.e., Japanese) due to character-encoding limitations, so in Japan, Spike Chunsoft (often shortened to “SupaChun”) localized only the PS3 version through its own custom workaround. Afterward, the PC, Switch, and mobile versions each received official Japanese localization, but the Xbox version’s engine remained unsupported for multiple languages for years. This time, an engine overhaul finally enabled official Japanese support, and with the publisher shifting to 505 Games Japan, the release has now happened. Thread posters split between two theories: that Sony paid to secretly block the Xbox release, versus that Xbox was simply deprioritized because it doesn’t sell well in Japan — neither backed by conclusive evidence. Similar past cases, such as the cancelled Japanese release of Metal Gear Rising, were brought up for comparison, but whether an exclusivity clause actually existed is something only the parties involved would know, and it’s worth noting this cannot be stated as confirmed fact.

  • Dragon Quest Walk finally adds the skill on/off toggle everyone wanted — but locks it behind a paywall, and players are furious

Dragon Quest Walk players have long complained that during auto-battle, skills they’ve selected often don’t get used automatically, and there had been repeated requests for a per-skill on/off toggle. That feature has now been added — but only for subscribers to the “Gold Pass,” which works out to roughly 3,000 yen a month, drawing criticism from free-to-play users who called it “deliberately making the game inconvenient just so they can sell you the fix.” The thread saw a mix of defenses (“of course paying customers get treated better”) and counterarguments (“if free players quit, the game dies out and paying users suffer too”), escalating into name-calling that included the slur “kojiki” (beggar) aimed at non-paying players.

Auto-battle often wouldn't use the skills players actually wanted — so they added a skill on/off toggle, but made it pay-only, and free-to-play users are reportedly livid

A large base of light spenders matters more than a handful of whale hardcores, and you need a ton of worthless freeloaders around to make those light spenders feel good about themselves. Placing 1,000th out of 3,000 in a ranking event feels meh, but 1,000th out of 50,000 feels great

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

Dragon Quest Walk will mark its 7th anniversary in 2026. The “Gold Pass” at the center of this controversy is a subscription-style paid plan that includes a discount item usable once per week, working out to roughly 3,000 yen a month. Some in the thread mistakenly assumed Square Enix was the developer/operator, but the game is actually run by Colopl — a misunderstanding that was corrected within the original thread itself. The central debate is whether it’s fair to make an already-requested feature pay-only: some saw it as simply monetizing a normal convenience feature, while others saw it as deliberately leaving the game inconvenient first and then charging to fix it. The sniping between free and paying users is a familiar routine in these threads, though it never escalated into attacks on specific individuals.

*This article is compiled from excerpts and a summary of the 5ch (Nandemo Jikkyo G) thread “[Sad News] Dragon Quest Walk implements a long-requested feature as pay-only, drawing a wave of criticism from free-to-play users.”
