The story
Nintendo’s earnings report for the second quarter of fiscal year ending March 2027 revealed that Nintendo Switch 2 sales for July–September came in at just 2.67 million units, a 41% drop year-on-year. That’s down from the 3.82 million units sold in April–June, bringing first-half cumulative sales to 6.49 million (down 37.4%) and lifetime sales since launch to 26.35 million. Some observers point to price increases in Japan, the US, and Canada, along with a lack of major new releases, as contributing factors. On 5ch’s hardware/industry (“Geha”) board, discussion centered on whether Nintendo can still hit its annual target of 16.5 million units, and how its sales pace compares to the PS5 and the PC market.
Nintendo Switch 2 sales down 41% after price hike. Next fiscal year could see another increase due to rising component costs
> According to Nintendo’s Q2 FY2027 (ending March 2027) earnings, Switch 2 sales for July–September — after the price hike — fell 41% year-on-year to 2.67 million units, down even further from the 3.82 million sold in April–June. That brings first-half totals to 6.49 million (down 37.4%) and lifetime sales to 26.35 million. The year-ago quarter included the launch month of June and its immediate momentum, which makes the drop look larger, but some analysts say the price hikes in Japan, the US, and Canada, combined with a shortage of major new titles, also played a role.

What people said
Yikes.
Not good.
Meanwhile the PS5 kept selling even during stretches when it was priced even higher.
"Kept selling" (self-reported)
Though apparently it was still losing by something like a 33-to-1 ratio.
If anything, the decline was expected.
Nintendo knew about the price hike, so they set the target conservatively.
But the reality is they're falling short even of that lowered target.
It's obviously impossible to hit the target at this point — not revising it is just negligence.
Manshi Senkou (a Switch 2 title) selling worse than Wolverine is hilarious.
Seriously?
Manshi Senkou is selling below Wolverine? lol
Don't tell me Star Fox and Yoshi are below Wolverine too…
Well, I guess it depends on who's actually buying.
Nah, Xbox Series is selling at dead-on-arrival levels
even in America.
Switch 2 is going to cause a generational break, and that'll be the end of Nintendo.
Maybe worry about PlayStation first — it's nothing but old men.
To get any scraps of third-party support left over from the PS5, the world forces them to keep the hardware just weak enough that the PS5 stays comfortably ahead.
Sony spent 30 years building the gallows and finally hung Nintendo on it.
So it's finally happened — the thing we'd all been quietly sensing.
Honestly, I'd already felt uneasy that the original Switch kept selling even after Switch 2 launched.
50,000 yen was already too expensive for a kids' game console,
and raising it to 60,000 yen after the hike is just too much.
So I get the impression Switch 2 was never meant to surpass its predecessor from the start.
Something I personally feel strongly about:
some of my brethren have been taunting people in the weekly-sales threads with things like "the old Switch is outselling the PS5" — and I deeply regret that.
I've been turning a blind eye until now, but going forward I intend to correct this behavior whenever I see it.
Could you not make fun of the Nintendo fanboys (5ch slang: "buta," literally "pigs") who were celebrating in the weekly-sales threads about the Switch outselling the PS5?
I'm sorry — indirectly, that comment may have also offended Xbox players.
In light of this shameful behavior, going forward I will make it a rule to
"review my post once before submitting to make sure it won't offend anyone."
Best case, it follows the 3DS trajectory.
If things keep getting worse, it's the Wii U trajectory.
Can't even watch YouTube on it either lol
That's gotta be the most boring outcome possible for console-war fans.
Hope Switch 2 can turn things around too.
PS5:
2022: Price hike in Japan, Europe, etc. (US excluded)
2024: Price hike in Japan
2025: Some models hiked in Europe, UK, Australia, etc.
2026: Worldwide price hike
The PS5's real competition is PC.
Even after the hikes, it's still cheaper than building a PC, so it stays on the table as an option.
Switch 2, on the other hand, gets compared against both the PS5 and the original Switch.
Its price isn't that far off from the PS5, which makes it feel way too expensive to anyone coming from a Switch.
Sure, it's boring for console-war fans, but isn't this the best possible outcome if you actually love games?
Now you don't need to bother with dead-end losing hardware like Switch 2 or a future PS6 — you can just get a PC and be done with it.
Prices went up and sales dropped for PC too, that's no different.
The PC gaming market keeps growing.
Quite the contrast to Switch 2, a dying market whose sales have fallen off a cliff compared to the original Switch.
Steam's concurrent users and revenue are both at all-time highs.
GPU and RAM price hikes? Doesn't even register.

It's not that they don't need new IPs — they just can't make them.
Background and Key Points of Discussion
It’s worth noting that the year-ago quarter used for this 41% comparison included the console’s launch-month momentum, so a straight year-over-year comparison can make the drop look larger than it really is. That said, first-half cumulative sales are also down 37.4% year-on-year, and several analysts point to the combination of price hikes and a shortage of major new releases as a factor. In the thread, opinions were divided over how much of the price-hike impact Nintendo had already factored into its 16.5-million-unit annual target, with some questioning the decision not to revise that target downward. The fact that the PS5 has maintained its sales pace through multiple price increases also came up as a point of comparison, though the differing timing of those hikes and market conditions make a direct comparison difficult. Others contrasted the growth of the PC market with the stagnation of console hardware, reflecting broader interest in structural shifts across the hardware market.
