The story

Sandwichman’s Mikio Date, who suffered a stroke during a location shoot in Kushiro, Hokkaido in late August and had been off work for about two months, returned to work with a live appearance on Nippon Broadcasting’s “Sandwichman The Radio Show Saturday” on October 31. As guest helper Hidetaka Kano reacted in surprise, Date’s first words were, “Sorry to keep you waiting. I’m back,” and he explained that he would gradually resume work while continuing to attend rehab. On the thread, alongside voices celebrating his return, there was a notable amount of attention on when Yuki Hinamura (Bananaman), who has also been on leave, might come back, which broadened the discussion.

Sandwichman’s Date Mikio, who suffered a stroke, returns to his own live radio show after 2 months: “Sorry to keep you waiting. I’m back.” “I’ll be gradually easing back into work from today while still going to rehab.”

Mikio Date of the comedy duo Sandwichman, who had been on leave since late August due to a stroke, appeared on the 31st on his own Nippon Broadcasting live variety show “Sandwichman The Radio Show Saturday” (Saturdays, 1 p.m.), returning to work for the first time in about two months.

At the top of the show, Hidetaka Kano, appearing as a guest helper, exclaimed in surprise, “The studio’s making noise outside the booth.” Date’s first words were, “Sorry to keep you waiting. I’m back. Thank you, everyone.”

Hinamura's still not back?
Is his thing more of a mental health issue, I wonder
9AnonymousOct 31, 2026 13:48
Re: #4
Even if Hinamura's health improves, if he's lost a ton of weight he can't go on TV
He needs time to put the weight back on too

Re: #9
Hinamura's got diabetes, right?
He said on a live broadcast like 10 years ago that he goes to the hospital once every 2 months
5AnonymousOct 31, 2026 13:43
Honestly I'm more worried about Papaya Suzuki now
6AnonymousOct 31, 2026 13:43
Could he talk properly?

Re: #6
Felt like his voice lacked some energy, but his enunciation was fine
61AnonymousOct 31, 2026 14:11
Re: #6
It's still on air, you know
10AnonymousOct 31, 2026 13:48
Lucky it happened to him during a shoot in Tokyo
If this had happened while shooting out in the mountains somewhere, it would've been too late
Even with good luck he probably would've been left with lasting effects

Re: #10
Why Kushiro though
13AnonymousOct 31, 2026 13:49
Surely he quit smoking after this
If nobody's mentioned it, sounds like he's probably started again
15AnonymousOct 31, 2026 13:50
Re: #13
At least for now he says he's not smoking
20AnonymousOct 31, 2026 13:52
Hinamura's Skechers commercial is back on air, so I bet there's a timeline in place for his return
28AnonymousOct 31, 2026 13:55
Re: #20
I saw a news story saying 'Masaki Aiba named new Skechers ambassador'
Isn't that a replacement because Hinamura doesn't look like he's coming back anytime soon?
56AnonymousOct 31, 2026 14:08
Re: #20
That's an old commercial of Hinamura's
22AnonymousOct 31, 2026 13:53
He admitted he has to eat a ton on camera to put on a show
He doesn't need to be on variety shows anymore, honestly
25AnonymousOct 31, 2026 13:54
Re: #22
This guy eats like that even when the camera's not rolling
If he only did it on camera, that'd actually be an improvement
24AnonymousOct 31, 2026 13:54
Being able to do radio is a really good sign
Speech is one of the things that often gets hit by after-effects, so a talking job like this would be tough otherwise

Re: #21
In late August 2026, he felt unwell while filming the TV show 'Kano Sand' in Kushiro, Hokkaido, and suffered a stroke.

Re: #15
There's no way you'd know that
33AnonymousOct 31, 2026 13:57
Re: #31
Because it's straight from the man himself
37AnonymousOct 31, 2026 14:00
I see that Fuji Tire commercial with the 'Taiya wa Fuji' ('Tires Are Fuji') jingle on YouTube a lot, and there's a version of that ad with both Sandwichman and Hinamura in it
Is this company some kind of magnet for sick celebrities, or did they both just happen to get sick after doing this company's commercial?
44AnonymousOct 31, 2026 14:04
It's about time to record the year-end/New Year specials, so he probably rushed treatment with that as a deadline
Meanwhile Hinamura still hasn't come back — he probably won't even be around by next spring, and if he doesn't hurry up, Shitara's gonna collapse too
71AnonymousOct 31, 2026 14:19
Re: #44
Do you seriously think recovery just works out faster if you rush it?
That's a scary way to think
45AnonymousOct 31, 2026 14:05
Don't push yourself too hard
Focus on your rehab
46AnonymousOct 31, 2026 14:06
Re: #45
Stuff like this counts as rehab too, you know
49AnonymousOct 31, 2026 14:06
Was his speech slurred?
57AnonymousOct 31, 2026 14:09
Re: #49
Thanks to his rehab therapist Dr. Yamada, he's down to just occasionally fumbling (stumbling over) his words
53AnonymousOct 31, 2026 14:07
He can't do the 'zero calorie' bit anymore, but he could pull off the same effect by just claiming everything's too risky to eat lol
Though then the work would dry up
87AnonymousOct 31, 2026 14:28
Re: #53
Couldn't he just split all his food with Tomizawa?
63AnonymousOct 31, 2026 14:12
So how was his speech?
65AnonymousOct 31, 2026 14:12
Re: #63
Because it's live on air right now, that's why
66AnonymousOct 31, 2026 14:13
Date collapsed
Hinamura collapsed too
Is Matsuko next?
69AnonymousOct 31, 2026 14:17
Re: #66
Matsuko was hospitalized once last year or so too, remember
68AnonymousOct 31, 2026 14:16
I hope they don't push him too hard on location shoots and stuff
Anyway, congrats on the comeback for now
76AnonymousOct 31, 2026 14:22
Re: #68
Tomizawa's not so much into it, but Date loves being out on location
Maybe the big-eating bit will shift to having the guest and Korokke (real name Rikiya Saito) do the eating instead?

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

In late August 2026, Mikio Date felt unwell during a location shoot in Kushiro, Hokkaido, suffered a stroke, and had since taken a break from work, including “Sandwichman The Radio Show Saturday.” Strokes can carry a risk of recurrence as well as lasting effects on speech and motor function, so while returning to live broadcasting after about two months points to a smooth recovery, it’s worth noting that, as Date himself put it, he’s “still going to rehab,” meaning treatment is ongoing. The thread was split between people simply happy about Date’s return and those more focused on when Yuki Hinamura (Bananaman), who has been on leave since around the same time, might come back. On that latter point, it should be noted that no detailed explanation of his condition has been made public, so speculation about things like diabetes remains unconfirmed aside from a few comments attributed to the man himself.
