The story

Actress Yuhi Matsuda appeared on TOKYO MX’s “5-ji ni Muchu!” on the 30th and revealed that she’s “a little annoyed” when people say the catchphrase “Nanja koriya” to her — the line most associated with her late father, actor Yusaku Matsuda, from his role in the cop drama “Taiyo ni Hoero” (“Bark at the Sun”). Matsuda passed away in 1989, but the famous last words of his character G-Pan, the jeans-wearing detective, are still vividly remembered today. On 5ch, users debated the exact wording of the line he actually said, along with the story of comedian Naoto Takenaka getting scolded for doing the impression right in front of Matsuda himself.

Actress and artist Yuhi Matsuda appeared live as a guest commentator on TOKYO MX’s “5-ji ni Muchu!” (weekdays at 5 PM) on the 30th, where she brought up her father, Yusaku Matsuda.

Matsuda, filling in as the Wednesday regular in place of Mie Nakao, was asked about that day’s live viewer poll topic, “Have you ever gotten genuinely angry about something in entertainment?” She answered, “It’s not that I’m genuinely angry, but, you know, people do impressions of my dad — I see it a lot,” referencing the famous line “Nanja koriya!” from the death scene of his character G-Pan in his signature role in “Taiyo ni Hoero.”

Sorry, I don't quite get what you're saying (a famous meme line from comedian Hitoshi Matsumoto)
4AnonymousOct 30, 2026 18:01
WHAT THE HELL IS THIIIIS?!?!?!?!
Back then it was a huge catchphrase among kids too
5AnonymousOct 30, 2026 18:02
It's not
"Nanja koriya!"
it's
"Nanjaa~ koriyaa~!"
that's the real deal
54AnonymousOct 30, 2026 18:30
Re: #5
If you listen closely, it's actually more like "Nan da kore wa~!" ("What IS this~!")
8AnonymousOct 30, 2026 18:03
Spitting out milk became a copycat trend and we all got scolded for it, right?
9AnonymousOct 30, 2026 18:03
A lot of people scream it as "NANJA KORIYAAAA!!!"

but in the original he spits it out more like "Nanjaa koriyaa!?"
11AnonymousOct 30, 2026 18:05
For the record, the correct line is "Nanjaa koriyaa!!"
13AnonymousOct 30, 2026 18:06
I used to copy the bit where the lighter flame shoots up ridiculously high
15AnonymousOct 30, 2026 18:06
It even became an ASCII-art meme

but I actually prefer the "BUUUUUUUUU!!" one
He does that one in "Taiyo ni Hoero," "Tantei Monogatari," and "Daitokai 2" too, I think
17AnonymousOct 30, 2026 18:07
My niece came over during the holidays,
and when I reenacted the whole bit, acting and all, right up to the "nanja koriyaa~"
she was totally hooked
made me do it over and over
even kids today get into it lol
19AnonymousOct 30, 2026 18:08
Doing impressions is just a copycat act, really
sounds like something a half-baked comedian with no material of their own would do
21AnonymousOct 30, 2026 18:09
Guess nobody does impressions of their own mom, huh
22AnonymousOct 30, 2026 18:10
I can easily picture a kick flying at you the instant you did that right in front of the man himself
23AnonymousOct 30, 2026 18:10
She's the daughter of the "Nanda chimi wa" ("What's with you") guy, right?
26AnonymousOct 30, 2026 18:11
She probably doesn't even have real memories of her dad, so this must put her in an awkward spot
27AnonymousOct 30, 2026 18:13
Is there really anyone gutsy enough to do an impression of her dad right in front of his actual daughter
29AnonymousOct 30, 2026 18:14
In "Mahoro Ekimae Tada Benriken," having Eita deliver the line "Nanja koriyaa" and then having Ryuhei [Matsuda] respond "Who? Doesn't even sound like him" was a nice touch

I heard Naoto Takenaka said he got scolded for doing the "Nanja koriyaa" impression right in front of Yusaku Matsuda himself
37AnonymousOct 30, 2026 18:21
I wonder if "This game has a sure-fire winning strategy" is one of his famous lines too
39AnonymousOct 30, 2026 18:22
My favorite death scene is Bogie's (nickname of his character in "Tantei Monogatari," after Humphrey Bogart)
41AnonymousOct 30, 2026 18:22
Re: #14
That's from the opening of the drama "Tantei Monogatari"

he doesn't actually say "Nanjaa koriyaa!?" when he sees the blood
Apparently it was an ad-lib direction that turned into a famous line, but personally I don't think it was great acting
42AnonymousOct 30, 2026 18:23
Which big-name star does stuff like this? Sanma [Akashiya]?
45AnonymousOct 30, 2026 18:24
Hope that's not her genuine reaction after actually watching it
47AnonymousOct 30, 2026 18:25
Shinko… I don't wanna die. I really don't wanna die… Mom…
48AnonymousOct 30, 2026 18:25
Still better than being told the truth — that it's a ripoff of Shoken (Ken Hagiwara)'s thing
49AnonymousOct 30, 2026 18:25
Why not just go ask her accomplished comedian ex-boyfriend
50AnonymousOct 30, 2026 18:28
Isn't this basically like doing the "a midwife in English is called a 'samba-bird,' just kidding!" bit in front of Shuri (Shoken/Ken Hagiwara's daughter)? (an old pun-joke of her father's)
51AnonymousOct 30, 2026 18:28
I remembered there being a scene in the "Tantei Monogatari" opening where he eats a tomato and drinks milk,
but when I watched the BS rerun, it was a shock to see he's just making and drinking coffee
94AnonymousOct 30, 2026 18:52
Re: #51
You're mixing that up with Shoken's "Kizudarake no Tenshi" ("Scarred Angel").
52AnonymousOct 30, 2026 18:29
Yeah, I get why she'd hate it — don't go doing it right in front of his daughter
55AnonymousOct 30, 2026 18:32
Does she have any work of her own besides being "Yusaku Matsuda's daughter"?

Background and Key Points of This Topic

“Nanja koriyaa” is the line famously known for being uttered by actor Yusaku Matsuda during his death scene playing the detective nicknamed G-Pan in the 1972 cop drama “Taiyo ni Hoero” (“Bark at the Sun”). Several commenters in the thread pointed out that the precise wording isn’t “nanja koriyaa” but rather “nanjaa koriyaa,” showing a gap between how the line is popularly remembered and what was actually said. Other replies confused it with memories of a different show, “Tantei Monogatari” (“Detective Story”), including a correction noting it was being mixed up with a performance by actor Shoken (Ken Hagiwara). Yusaku Matsuda died of illness in 1989 — not as the result of an accident or incident. A daughter’s complicated feelings about impressions of her father can be read as a struggle shared by the families of actors known for one iconic catchphrase.
