The story
Square Enix announced that FINAL FANTASY VII REVELATION, slated for release on April 8, 2027, will include a mode for PS5 Pro that uses PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution) to achieve both 4K resolution and 60fps. The news was revealed by director Naoki Hamaguchi. On 5ch’s hardware/industry board, the announcement sparked wide-ranging discussion — from “Is it even worth supporting this when Pro adoption is under 5%?” to misconceptions that the feature would bloat file size, the real-world shortage and scalping of PS5 Pro units in stores, and comparisons of graphics and frame rates with the Switch 2 version.
It has come to light that Square Enix’s FINAL FANTASY VII REVELATION, due out April 8, 2027, will feature a dedicated mode for PS5 Pro that delivers both 4K resolution and 60fps. Director Naoki Hamaguchi explained that this will be achieved using PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR).
4K and 60fps together, thanks to PSSR
According to Hamaguchi, the PS5 Pro version implements a mode that uses PSSR to deliver both 4K visuals and 60fps gameplay. For players who want high image quality and smooth performance at the same time, he says the PS5 Pro will be one of the recommended ways to play.

What people said
Dragon Quest VII Reimagined barely outsold Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D.
That's been true since the second entry.
Might be the biggest gap I've seen, honestly.
That's basically magic.
Used ones are pretty easy to find at Geo (a used-goods retail chain).
New ones are all bought up by scalpers though.
Wasn't that printed huge on the box?
Due to a lack of content and high prices, major manufacturers of consumer 8K TVs and related products — Sony, LG, and Sharp (the last holdout) — have all pulled out or ended production one after another, effectively bringing the 8K market to a close.
8K is dead. 4K is the resolution ceiling, forever (´・ω・`)
Now that a resolution ceiling has been shown, that proves there's a ceiling on image quality too.
Graphical improvements in game consoles are winding down as well.
Upscaling and graphics settings alone don't change the file size.
With plain upscaling the size might not change, but the way this is worded makes it sound like they're building separate 4K assets to support it.
When the PC version of FF15 got 4K support, the data size got huge.
No, it's just PSSR upscaling it to 4K/60fps.
What do you think "Super Resolution" means?
Regular PS5 already supports native 4K rendering to begin with.
I'm used to key cards by now, and I like the small package size.
It's not just the graphics — that "Trashwitch 2" runs at a choppy 30fps too.
I'm not an fps nerd, 30fps is plenty for me.
30fps is plenty for something like FF.
Now a driving game like GTA running at 30, that'd be unacceptable though.
It's hardware made purely for Nintendo's own games.
You should've been calling it unplayable garbage back when the first game came out on the PS4 version — which was worse than the Switch 2 one.
Suddenly caring about specs now that it's multiplatform on Switch is a day late.
In the end, PC is the only real choice for gaming.
If PS5 is "out of the running," what does that make the Switch?!
Playing while listening to that racket is basically torture, no thanks.
Clearly never actually played it.
In reality it's completely silent — quiet enough to make you wonder if it's even running.
I don't hear anything though.
It's become such a legendary console that just owning one gets you envious stares.
Retailers are dropping PlayStation already, so it's on its way out — they're clearing out unsold games in sales.
By next year there probably won't even be a PS section anymore.
Those types just stare at spec sheets — they never actually buy anything.
Sorry to say, but that's actually weaker than a PS5 Pro lol
Quit kicking the Switch 2 while it's down — the thing already peaked and got crushed in sales by that very PS5 in its second year lmaooooo
I laughed that Pragmata's render resolution on Pro was only 864p.
Isn't that just the regular performance mode? Switch 2 renders at 540p docked and 360p handheld.
Background and Key Points of This Discussion
PSSR is an AI upscaling technology built into the PS5 Pro that takes footage rendered at a lower internal resolution and reconstructs it to roughly 4K quality. Since it’s fundamentally an upscaling process, the worry raised in the thread that “file size will grow because they’re building dedicated 4K assets” (post 35) is close to a misunderstanding, as posts 39 and 41 point out. Rather than debating the technology itself, though, the discussion mostly drifted into classic hardware-war territory: the domestic shortage and scalping of PS5 Pro units (post 61), and differences in rendering resolution versus the Switch 2 version (posts 99 and 102, e.g. 864p docked vs. 540p). FINAL FANTASY VII REVELATION is the third entry in the Remake trilogy, directed by Naoki Hamaguchi, and is set to release on April 8, 2027.
