The story

Square Enix announced that FINAL FANTASY VII REVELATION, slated for release on April 8, 2027, will include a mode for PS5 Pro that uses PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution) to achieve both 4K resolution and 60fps. The news was revealed by director Naoki Hamaguchi. On 5ch’s hardware/industry board, the announcement sparked wide-ranging discussion — from “Is it even worth supporting this when Pro adoption is under 5%?” to misconceptions that the feature would bloat file size, the real-world shortage and scalping of PS5 Pro units in stores, and comparisons of graphics and frame rates with the Switch 2 version.

It has come to light that Square Enix’s FINAL FANTASY VII REVELATION, due out April 8, 2027, will feature a dedicated mode for PS5 Pro that delivers both 4K resolution and 60fps. Director Naoki Hamaguchi explained that this will be achieved using PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR).

4K and 60fps together, thanks to PSSR

According to Hamaguchi, the PS5 Pro version implements a mode that uses PSSR to deliver both 4K visuals and 60fps gameplay. For players who want high image quality and smooth performance at the same time, he says the PS5 Pro will be one of the recommended ways to play.

The sad reality for Square Enix right now: pixel-art games just sell better.
Dragon Quest VII Reimagined barely outsold Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D.
5AnonymousSep 23, 2026 11:42
So you're saying you can't get the 'true' experience without a PS5 Pro?
21AnonymousSep 23, 2026 11:57
Re: #5
That's been true since the second entry.
Might be the biggest gap I've seen, honestly.
7AnonymousSep 23, 2026 11:46
Pro adoption is under 5%, just drop support for it already.
8AnonymousSep 23, 2026 11:46
That's the pride of a die-hard PlayStation loyalist talking! ("ongi man" — someone who sticks with a brand out of a sense of debt/loyalty)
9AnonymousSep 23, 2026 11:47
Now that Kojima's out of the picture, Square Enix is the last one left showing any loyalty (to PlayStation).
14AnonymousSep 23, 2026 11:51
Thanks to PSSR, I got a girlfriend.

Re: #14
That's basically magic.
19AnonymousSep 23, 2026 11:55
Kind of ridiculous to put all this effort into support when you can't even find a Pro console to buy in the first place.
61AnonymousSep 23, 2026 13:09
Re: #19
Used ones are pretty easy to find at Geo (a used-goods retail chain).
New ones are all bought up by scalpers though.
24AnonymousSep 23, 2026 12:04
Hey, why isn't it 8K?

Wasn't that printed huge on the box?
33AnonymousSep 23, 2026 12:23
Re: #24
Due to a lack of content and high prices, major manufacturers of consumer 8K TVs and related products — Sony, LG, and Sharp (the last holdout) — have all pulled out or ended production one after another, effectively bringing the 8K market to a close.

8K is dead. 4K is the resolution ceiling, forever (´・ω・`)
Now that a resolution ceiling has been shown, that proves there's a ceiling on image quality too.
Graphical improvements in game consoles are winding down as well.
26AnonymousSep 23, 2026 12:11
Doesn't this mean bigger install sizes for regular PS5 owners just because of this feature? Isn't that annoying for them?
29AnonymousSep 23, 2026 12:18
Re: #26
Upscaling and graphics settings alone don't change the file size.
35AnonymousSep 23, 2026 12:25
Re: #29
With plain upscaling the size might not change, but the way this is worded makes it sound like they're building separate 4K assets to support it.
When the PC version of FF15 got 4K support, the data size got huge.
39AnonymousSep 23, 2026 12:40
Re: #35
No, it's just PSSR upscaling it to 4K/60fps.
41AnonymousSep 23, 2026 12:42
Re: #35
What do you think "Super Resolution" means?
Regular PS5 already supports native 4K rendering to begin with.
32AnonymousSep 23, 2026 12:21
Huge "so what?" energy from this.
34AnonymousSep 23, 2026 12:24
Re: #32
Not gonna trash-talk it?

So you really were just bitter about being left out and badmouthing it, huh?
37AnonymousSep 23, 2026 12:38
Graphics on par with Rebirth are good enough for me, so I'll get the Switch 2 version.
I'm used to key cards by now, and I like the small package size.
40AnonymousSep 23, 2026 12:42
Re: #37
It's not just the graphics — that "Trashwitch 2" runs at a choppy 30fps too.
45AnonymousSep 23, 2026 12:46
Re: #40
I'm not an fps nerd, 30fps is plenty for me.
47AnonymousSep 23, 2026 12:50
Re: #40
30fps is plenty for something like FF.
Now a driving game like GTA running at 30, that'd be unacceptable though.
46AnonymousSep 23, 2026 12:49
Switch 2 isn't even in the running — it's not just the crappy graphics, it's also got invisible walls, loading issues, and objects getting culled.
It's hardware made purely for Nintendo's own games.
60AnonymousSep 23, 2026 13:08
Re: #46
You should've been calling it unplayable garbage back when the first game came out on the PS4 version — which was worse than the Switch 2 one.
Suddenly caring about specs now that it's multiplatform on Switch is a day late.
48AnonymousSep 23, 2026 12:50
PS5 is out of the running too — Crimson Desert ran choppy on it and had objects and effects stripped out.
In the end, PC is the only real choice for gaming.
65AnonymousSep 23, 2026 13:15
Re: #48
If PS5 is "out of the running," what does that make the Switch?!
62AnonymousSep 23, 2026 13:11
Running PSSR at 4K/60fps on the PS5 Pro makes the fan roar like a vacuum cleaner.
Playing while listening to that racket is basically torture, no thanks.
63AnonymousSep 23, 2026 13:12
Re: #62
Clearly never actually played it.
In reality it's completely silent — quiet enough to make you wonder if it's even running.
76AnonymousSep 23, 2026 13:23
Re: #62
I don't hear anything though.
72AnonymousSep 23, 2026 13:20
Who knew the PS5 Pro would end up dominating like this.
It's become such a legendary console that just owning one gets you envious stares.
78AnonymousSep 23, 2026 13:24
Re: #72
Retailers are dropping PlayStation already, so it's on its way out — they're clearing out unsold games in sales.
By next year there probably won't even be a PS section anymore.
77AnonymousSep 23, 2026 13:24
Anyone who still thinks a console sells based on hardware specs or visual quality is just plain foolish.
Those types just stare at spec sheets — they never actually buy anything.
83AnonymousSep 23, 2026 13:38
I'll be playing it on a 5070 Ti, so none of this matters to me.
91AnonymousSep 23, 2026 13:58
Re: #83
Sorry to say, but that's actually weaker than a PS5 Pro lol
84AnonymousSep 23, 2026 13:39
Re: #78
Quit kicking the Switch 2 while it's down — the thing already peaked and got crushed in sales by that very PS5 in its second year lmaooooo
86AnonymousSep 23, 2026 13:41
Re: #84
"Crushed," you say…?
99AnonymousSep 23, 2026 14:36
Re: #87
I laughed that Pragmata's render resolution on Pro was only 864p.
102AnonymousSep 23, 2026 14:44
Re: #99
Isn't that just the regular performance mode? Switch 2 renders at 540p docked and 360p handheld.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

PSSR is an AI upscaling technology built into the PS5 Pro that takes footage rendered at a lower internal resolution and reconstructs it to roughly 4K quality. Since it’s fundamentally an upscaling process, the worry raised in the thread that “file size will grow because they’re building dedicated 4K assets” (post 35) is close to a misunderstanding, as posts 39 and 41 point out. Rather than debating the technology itself, though, the discussion mostly drifted into classic hardware-war territory: the domestic shortage and scalping of PS5 Pro units (post 61), and differences in rendering resolution versus the Switch 2 version (posts 99 and 102, e.g. 864p docked vs. 540p). FINAL FANTASY VII REVELATION is the third entry in the Remake trilogy, directed by Naoki Hamaguchi, and is set to release on April 8, 2027.
