Report of Square Enix Going Private Sparks Authenticity Debate on 5ch

The story

Reports have spread that economics-focused outlet “Sentaku” (sentaku.co.jp) suggested Square Enix is considering taking itself private, prompting a reaction on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (“Geha”) board. The company has long been noted for a structure in which the founding Fukushima family retains a firm grip on shares, relying relatively little on outside capital markets. In the thread, some pointed to the stock’s sharp jump as evidence the report holds water, while a persistent, cooler camp argued it’s just an unsourced rumor running wild that will end with an official denial — making the credibility of the report itself the biggest point of contention.

Guess that explains why Square and Capcom have been so close lately
7AnonymousSep 1, 2026 09:07
A top-tier economics publication reported it, so it's legit
8AnonymousSep 1, 2026 09:08
Everyone's getting uneasy ("zawa…" — the rustling murmur meme from Kaiji signaling dread)

is this actually real?
11AnonymousSep 1, 2026 09:08
Maybe it's to dodge getting bought out by Chinese capital?
15AnonymousSep 1, 2026 09:09
If it actually gets delisted, what happens exactly?
19AnonymousSep 1, 2026 09:12
Re: #15
Normally you'd expect downsizing and business restructuring.
Since the owner-family is the top shareholder, an immediate takeover seems unlikely,
but decisions would probably come easier than when it was publicly listed.
Not sure if they'd go that cold-blooded though.

Was picking up pachinko rights the omen for this?
32AnonymousSep 1, 2026 09:17
Re: #17
Pachinko machine makers are publicly listed too as a matter of course, so that's got nothing to do with it.
21AnonymousSep 1, 2026 09:12
Shareholders are furious lol — they just set up a shareholder perks program and now this
38AnonymousSep 1, 2026 09:19
Re: #21
The stock's already spiked, so just take the profit and bail.
Everyone'd rather have cash than perks anyway.
24AnonymousSep 1, 2026 09:13
What even is this sketchy source
29AnonymousSep 1, 2026 09:15
Re: #24
Someone's probably getting referred to prosecutors for spreading false rumors (a real securities-law offense in Japan) at this rate.
36AnonymousSep 1, 2026 09:18
Square Enix has been getting hounded by activist investors, after all

67AnonymousSep 1, 2026 09:28
Re: #36
That's a solid point right there
41AnonymousSep 1, 2026 09:20
Honestly, with the Fukushima family holding onto shares no matter what, being listed doesn't really mean much anyway
It's not like they're raising capital from the market
87AnonymousSep 1, 2026 09:37
Re: #41
Does the Fukushima family even intend to keep holding Square Enix stock?
44AnonymousSep 1, 2026 09:21
The stock is reacting massively
Seems pretty credible
75AnonymousSep 1, 2026 09:30
Re: #44
There was zero movement until yesterday — no insider-trading-style activity beforehand, nothing.
And the opening move is this sketchy source.
Suckers are piling in after taking the bait,
and I bet it ends with Square Enix officially denying it and everyone getting cleaned out.
62AnonymousSep 1, 2026 09:27
If they sell out, is it Dentsu or Chinese capital?
83AnonymousSep 1, 2026 09:34
Re: #62
Chinese capital, maybe, but Dentsu would be a disaster.
Domestically they survive on ad deals, policy, and subsidies, but overseas — where none of that works — they're basically wiped out.
65AnonymousSep 1, 2026 09:27
They said something like 'give us three years to turn it around' at some earnings call, but it hasn't even been that long yet, right?
69AnonymousSep 1, 2026 09:29
Re: #65
It's been a year already.

And they've shut down all kinds of services since then.
81AnonymousSep 1, 2026 09:33
Re: #65
And what they did with that time was port FF and other titles to Switch and PC.
Basically pointless.
76AnonymousSep 1, 2026 09:31
Re: #69
It's actually been 2 years and 3 months already
77AnonymousSep 1, 2026 09:32
Re: #76
That makes it even worse lol
89AnonymousSep 1, 2026 09:39
The endgame for a company that only ever thinks about making money

This, exactly
92AnonymousSep 1, 2026 09:42
Re: #89
Sounds kind of anarchist
93AnonymousSep 1, 2026 09:42
They've got needlessly bloated headcount too
Got hit by the weak yen maybe?
97AnonymousSep 1, 2026 09:46
Re: #93
Lol, nearly 3,300 employees on a non-consolidated basis alone

Not making much money given the headcount…
96AnonymousSep 1, 2026 09:46
Time for the big company-wide housecleaning to begin
101AnonymousSep 1, 2026 09:49
Re: #96
And only the higher-ups will survive, huh lol
Worst-case scenario
104AnonymousSep 1, 2026 09:50
Re: #101
If that happens, they'll probably outsource Dragon Quest and FF to Chinese studios, and something better than what we have now will come out of it
Everyone wins, no?
102AnonymousSep 1, 2026 09:49
Can't really call it good or bad.
There's a chance mediocre games rushed out just to hit earnings targets decrease,
but there's also a chance you just get more titles stuck in development limbo like Forspoken.
105AnonymousSep 1, 2026 09:51
Re: #102
Well, they'll stop caring about outside opinions, so it wouldn't be surprising if Square Enix goes even further off the rails and drowns itself in shovelware.
108AnonymousSep 1, 2026 09:52
110AnonymousSep 1, 2026 09:53
If Nintendo has no intention of returning value to shareholders either, they should just hurry up and go private too
111AnonymousSep 1, 2026 09:54
Re: #110
Being publicly listed isn't really about that in the first place though
114AnonymousSep 1, 2026 09:56
Re: #110
Their payout ratio is on the high side,
but the stock's overvalued, so if you just look at the dividend yield it feels underwhelming
121AnonymousSep 1, 2026 10:01
Was even Yoshida-P's FF14 not enough to save them?
124AnonymousSep 1, 2026 10:02
Re: #121
Supporting the whole workforce on that alone is tough

But there's nothing else promising in the pipeline either…

Background and key points of this discussion

The trend of publicly listed companies choosing to go private (via MBOs or buyouts by major shareholders) has been increasing both in Japan and abroad in recent years, driven by the cost of dealing with activist investors and a desire for long-term management unconstrained by quarterly earnings disclosures. Square Enix still has the founding Fukushima family as a major shareholder, which is seen as making sudden shifts in management policy driven by outside capital unlikely — though the company has also faced pressure from activist shareholders to improve management efficiency. The thread was split mainly on two points: how credible the originating report is, and how to interpret the sharp stock price jump. No official announcement or timely disclosure had been confirmed as of the time of the article. Also left unaddressed in the thread was the fact that delisting doesn’t necessarily mean scaling back the business or being sold off — many companies continue to operate independently after going private.
