The story
CD Projekt Red co-CEO Michał Nowakowski’s comment that he is “very satisfied” with sales of the Nintendo Switch 2 version of “Cyberpunk 2077” became a hot topic on 5ch’s console-war (“gehan”) board. Following his remark that, right after launch, the game outsold most first-party Nintendo titles besides Mario Kart, the thread saw a mix of posts pointing to weak sales for Nintendo’s own titles and posts analyzing why third-party software is doing well on Switch 2. At the same time, some posters cited recent earnings data suggesting the third-party market is actually shrinking, leading to disagreement over whether the strong showing will last.
CD Projekt Red co-CEO Michał Nowakowski commented on how the Nintendo Switch 2 version of “Cyberpunk 2077” has been selling.
“For a while after launch, I think it was the best-selling third-party game on the Nintendo Switch 2.
In fact, aside from Mario Kart, it outsold most of Nintendo’s own games.”

Re: #3
Doesn't that feel kind of empty?
If Nintendo's own games aren't selling, wouldn't stuff like Marathon and Toukon be way past just "running a loss"?
Honestly, this is huge
Going straight for a 64GB game card right out of the gate really showed CDPR meant business
Meanwhile the Japanese third-parties releasing around the same time were bailing out with key cards — used to be neutral on this, not anymore
75% of Switch 2 "Cyberpunk 2077" sales were physical copies.

That's talking about sales around launch though
A year's passed since then, so the situation's changed
Depending on the timing, the top of the sales chart can have almost no Nintendo titles on it at all
Probably because, unlike the original Switch, it no longer visibly falls short next to other platforms
Sure there's still a gap, but it's nothing like the PS3/PS4-vs-Vita-multiplat level of difference
We're genuinely heading toward a future where Switch is all you need for gaming.
That other big bulky thing is done.
Splatoon, Zelda, Mario — the only ones getting announced and released so far are all spin-offs
Setting aside whether Mario Kart counts as a mainline entry
It's just that Nintendo's own titles — like Animal Crossing hitting 10 million in Japan alone — were selling at a level nobody had ever reached before
There are actually plenty of cases of third-party titles on the original Switch getting a second wind,
so it's already established that this is a market where a genuinely well-made game will sell
What's different on Switch 2 is that, on top of that, more core-gamer-oriented titles are starting to sell too
Higher-priced, higher-end titles used to mostly get released on other platforms and rack up their sales there,
but on Switch 2 those kinds of titles are starting to show signs of selling as well
If Western developers put their games out on it, they'll probably sell better than they used to
Yeah, more and more devs are ditching PlayStation exclusivity
Even Elden Ring got a port
Cyberpunk, now of all times? How many laps behind are you?
This, exactly this!
PS users treating released games like leftovers, industrial waste, straight-up garbage
Meanwhile Switch 2 users welcoming quality software with open arms
No wonder third parties keep bleeding away from PS 😁😁😁
People playing on Switch aren't the type with endless free time to chase every new release
Put it out on PC or PS first,
then a few years later port over whichever games turned out to be good — everyone's happy with that
If just porting a game gets you this kind of stable profit on Switch, no wonder every last "PlayStation loyalist" exec is getting canned and third parties keep leaking out of PS 🥴
Must sting, huh lol
.hack or Lain would be fine too
SAO's the easy/cheap option though
That "Koreyui" game you're so into is never coming out though
Like, "I know more about running this business than the CEO does"?
That's just the company saying whatever it wants
It's probably not going to sell much more on PS at this point anyway
So let's keep throwing money at CDPR and get them to hurry up and make the sequel
The real issue is Japanese sales
At this rate, the Japanese localization itself is in jeopardy
Nintendo, where third-party games sell too
Simultaneous releases are increasing, and the real first-party heavy hitters are still on the way
Starting to feel like you just don't need a PS anymore
The PS5 never panned out as an investment though
There's no future for a platform where only free-to-play games sell, like PS
FY26/Q1 → FY27/Q1
Switch 2 cumulative hardware 5.82 million units → 23.68 million units
Third-party revenue ¥41.4 billion → ¥37.5 billion*①
*① FY27/Q1: total software revenue (¥132.7 billion ÷ 61.5% = ¥215.8 billion) × third-party share of 17.4% = ¥37.5 billion

Background and Key Points
“Cyberpunk 2077” launched in 2020 to a wave of bugs and harsh criticism, and has since rebuilt its reputation through ongoing updates. It’s worth noting that CD Projekt Red’s “very satisfied” comment here refers to the game’s relative sales ranking among Switch 2 software overall, not a guarantee about the growth rate or profitability of the Switch 2 market as a whole. In the thread, posts pointing to weak sales for Nintendo’s own titles ran alongside posts analyzing why third-party software is doing well on Switch 2, but posts citing earnings materials also showed data indicating that even as Switch 2’s cumulative hardware sales grow, third-party market revenue itself has shrunk compared to the same period last year — leaving open just how broadly the “third-party games sell on this platform” narrative actually holds across the market.
