The story
A thread that kicked off with the post “Is the gehe rivalry dead now?” took off on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (gehe) board. The board has long been known as a battleground where Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft fanboys hurl insults at each other, but this thread started with someone noting that their curation blog’s pageviews were dropping, and spiraled into a clash between posters arguing that the rise of PC gaming has diminished console relevance and those firing back with “you’re all putting way too much faith in PC.” Opinions were split on whether the whole gehe rivalry is becoming a relic of the past.
What people said
Have people just lost interest in games themselves?
So predictable, seriously.
Still doing the "la-la-la, I can't hear you" thing, lol
So the people agreeing here are all PS users, huh?
At least it's a fact that PC has way more of a future than dying hardware like the Switch 2 or PS5.
A "fantasy" means chasing after something that doesn't even exist.
It's still fresh in memory that Chameleon sold a whopping 20 million copies on Steam — a game made by just two Japanese guys that went a little viral and ended up selling tens of millions. That kind of thing just doesn't happen on consoles.
Release something like that on console and it'd sell a few thousand copies, tops 🤔
Same with Palworld — an indie title topping 40 million units is way beyond what consoles could ever pull off, so of course software makers are aiming for Steam.
Gehe old-timers grew up on physical packaged games so they're PC-phobic, but seriously, start talking based on reality for once.
Though I'm guessing this is really about the fans of that one console that's basically pulled out of retail and is genuinely on the verge of vanishing.
Gotta fight reality, man.
That's just cringe.
Doesn't that feel pathetic?
You actually think gehe isn't dead? That's ●●● even by gehe standards.
Why not go tell your parents, siblings, relatives, friends, and neighbors, "Gehe is NOT dead!"?
Maybe at least one person out there will understand you.
They don't care about people like you who don't spend money.
Nintendo seems to be doing fine because, for better or worse, it's stayed exactly the same as always,
but they're not even looking in your direction anymore.
If anything, the Switch 2's specs blatantly target PlayStation's customer base.
And that backfired in the worst possible way — the price shot up too high and mainstream buyers just ignored it.
They've already started cutting off mainstream customers with that price hike, though.
"A million copies worldwide!" ← Meanwhile: "In my country it only sold like 100,000 and nobody's even talking about it."
That's basically how it always goes.
Sure, the sales numbers get scraped together somehow, but the buzz gets diluted down to nothing and the game just loses all presence.
I mean, to begin with, they're wrestling sumo in someone else's loincloth — puffing themselves up over the earnings of a company they have zero connection to.
Since there's nothing of substance behind it, that's naturally where it ends up.
I mean, isn't this literally all gehe-trash ever does? 😅
Whenever there's bad news for their own console, they escape into denial with "must be fanboys from the other console brigading!" 😡
Basically, whenever things go badly, their default is to blame everyone else.
Like, gehe-trash usually go around trash-talking, "PS5's garbage, it's not even competition" 🤪
Fine, I'll give them that one, it's not selling great.
But then when someone points out the Switch 2 is selling worse than the original Switch, suddenly it's "well, at least it's better than the PS5!" 🤬
Like… "better than a garbage console that's not even competition" isn't really the comeback you think it is, right? 🤔
Yeah, it's over — PC took the crown.
Both the Switch 2 and PS5 are turning into has-beens.
PC gaming has only just barely edged out consoles in global sales, and it's getting hit hard by rising semiconductor prices, so there's not much room left to grow.
Even Famitsu's own data shows the only thing really booming is mobile — PC and console are both flat.
There's no rule saying third parties have to be on PlayStation.
And if it's just about good financials, Microsoft's the strongest anyway.
Nah, Xbox runs on a 3% profit margin — strip out the ¥10 trillion Activision Blizzard King deal and it's a massive money-losing, failed division.
And Nintendo has lost the profit race to SIE three years running (´・ω・`)
Microsoft's hardware business isn't doing well.
Its revenue is lower than Sony's, on top of that.
Microsoft is only strong because of its software studios —
Activision alone brings in something like ¥1-point-something trillion in revenue, roughly on par with Nintendo.
Sure, Microsoft overall is the strongest, but their console division has basically been told to fend for itself lately.
Can't be helped — platform holders are basically gods in every industry. There's an endless line of businesses
willing to sign on, and if you defy them you just get banned, so all you can do is live in fear.
That argument doesn't hold up
once you've seen what Chameleon pulled off.
Small game companies just scored massive hits with stuff like Palworld and Chameleon, though.
But there's no way Furukawa's got the guts to make that call.
Iwata, on the other hand, could cut the Wii U loose in a heartbeat and redirect resources to the 3DS to weather the storm.
Even the Switch 1 would be tough to make at a ¥20,000 cost.
So you're saying they should put out hardware weaker than the Switch 1 at this point?
Like hell they would, idiot.
Honestly, the 3DS should've stayed at 25,000 yen — it was worth every bit of that.
I generally think highly of Iwata, but that Ambassador Program price cut is one of his dark chapters.
It set a bad precedent for the market, and it's what dragged the company into the red.
There's no way Furukawa could pull that off. Iwata, please come back (´;ω;`)
Background and Key Points of This Discussion
The Hardware/Industry (gehe) board is one of 5ch’s most notorious boards for rivalry between console fanboys, with a long-running culture of Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft, and PC supporters trading barbs. The backdrop raised in this thread includes the fact that indie titles on Steam can rack up tens of millions of sales while console-exclusive titles rarely see success on that scale, along with pointed remarks that the Switch 2 launched pricier than expected and hasn’t reached the mainstream, plus talk of Microsoft’s hardware division struggling with thin margins. Opinions in the thread split between those who see the rise of PC gaming as having made the whole gehe rivalry obsolete, and those who argue the rivalry is simply continuing in a new form — and both sides tend to cite sales figures and statistics without sourcing them, so the numbers here should be read strictly as claims made within the posts themselves.
