  • Late-Night “Ojarumaru” Watch-Along Thread Keeps Derailing — 5ch Dubs It the “Blade of Jumping to Conclusions” (a Demon Slayer pun)

A thread titled “Let’s All Watch-Along to Ojarumaru” popped up on 5ch’s “Anything Goes Live” board — in theory it was for anime commentary, but given the late-night hour, the conversation went off the rails again and again. From a Gunpla-building stream, to a “Donjara” tabletop game riding on Demon Slayer’s coattails, to a mix-up between a PHS service outage and PHP server maintenance that snowballed into its own mini-panic, to VTuber chit-chat — the thread’s 41 replies splintered into 17 separate side conversations. Nothing ever converged into one topic, but that scattered, anything-goes energy is exactly the vibe these watch-along threads are known for.

Background and Key Points of This Thread

This thread ran on 5ch’s “Anything Goes Live” board, known for letting several topics run side-by-side rather than sticking to one subject — and true to form, the thread’s original purpose, commentary on “Ojarumaru,” got buried almost immediately. One exchange worth flagging follows the post “Heard PHS was in serious trouble and rushed over,” which leads into talk of “sites running PHP that haven’t done maintenance being the ones in trouble” — two similarly-sounding abbreviations, PHS and PHP, got tangled together, and it’s never actually clarified within the thread which service’s outage was being discussed. This is a common pattern in casual one-off threads, where a mishearing or typo spreads unchecked, and there’s no way to confirm from the thread alone what was really happening with which service. Readers should treat posts in threads like this not as verified fact, but simply as a snapshot of what got people talking in the moment.

  • YouTube Cracks Down on Mukbang Videos Over Eating Disorder Fears — Creators Call It a ‘Matter of Survival’

YouTube is tightening restrictions on “big-eating” (mukbang-style) videos, citing concerns that they may encourage eating disorders. In South Korea, a creator with 440,000 subscribers had their monetization suspended and revealed they had made private or deleted 339 videos posted over the past four years. The unease has spread to Japanese creators too, with some voicing fears that “this could become a matter of survival.” On 5ch threads, opinions split between those sympathetic to the eating-disorder concern and those questioning the consistency with TV shows that similarly feature people eating huge quantities of food — with debate over creators’ health and how far the line for regulation should be drawn.

    Wed, Oct 21, 6:00 PM

Reports have been piling up from Korean creators saying their “monetization was suspended” over so-called “big-eating videos” — content showing people eating huge amounts of food that has drawn large audiences — and the news has rattled creators in Japan as well. Behind it lies YouTube’s guidelines stating that such content may encourage “eating disorders.” On social media, questions have also arisen such as “how is this any different from mukbang TV shows?”

According to reports from Korea, mukbang YouTuber Sarpejo, who has 440,000 subscribers, revealed in September that “revenue generation has been suspended.” They said, “YouTube’s guidelines on binge-eating and eating-disorder-related content have tightened, and strong restrictions are now being applied to my channel,” and stopped publishing videos. Other creators have also reported receiving monetization-suspension notices from YouTube, with some saying they made private or deleted 339 videos posted over the past four years.

    https://m.youtube.com/shorts/LOfpcRwzfWI?ra=m

Background and Key Points of This Topic

The tightened regulation of mukbang-style videos stems from YouTube’s concern about the impact on eating disorders, though it’s not yet clear how strictly domestic guideline enforcement will go. As with the Korean creator’s case, monetization suspensions and video takedowns/deletions directly affect creators’ livelihoods — hence the term “matter of survival,” reflecting how many creators depend on YouTube revenue as their main income. In the thread, some questioned the consistency of this stance given that TV shows likewise feature people eating huge quantities of food, wondering why the restriction is limited to video platforms. At the same time, the concern about encouraging eating disorders is itself a medically grounded point, and worries about binge-purge behavior and health risks remain persistent. It should be noted that most comments in the thread about whether creators are actually vomiting or hiding such behavior are speculation, not facts confirmed by reporting.

  • Soccer’s Highest-Paid Players Ranked: Ronaldo Takes No.1, Earning Double Messi’s Salary

Forbes magazine’s “World’s Highest-Paid Soccer Players” ranking has named Al-Nassr’s Cristiano Ronaldo No. 1, with an annual income of roughly ¥47.6 billion — about double that of Inter Miami’s Lionel Messi. The thread ranged widely, touching on comparisons to Shohei Ohtani’s salary, the comparatively low pay of Japanese players like Kaoru Mitoma and Daichi Kamada, opinions on the Saudi league’s standing, and whether European soccer salary figures are quoted before or after tax.

    Forbes’ estimate

The ranking of soccer’s top earners has been released, with Al-Nassr forward Cristiano Ronaldo topping the list at roughly £225 million (about ¥47.6 billion) a year. According to Forbes’ estimate, Ronaldo’s earnings come in at about double those of his rival, Inter Miami forward Lionel Messi.

Ronaldo’s income reportedly breaks down into an annual salary of about £187 million (about ¥39.6 billion) from Al-Nassr, plus roughly £37 million (about ¥7.8 billion) in commercial income from sponsorships and the like.

Including the deferred salary, that's almost 30 billion

    Background and talking points

Forbes’ estimate combines base salary with commercial income like sponsorships, so a straightforward comparison across countries with different tax systems only goes so far. Sure enough, the thread was split over whether European salary figures are quoted pre-tax or post-tax, with posters noting how hard it is to compare against countries like Saudi Arabia and Qatar that have no income tax at all. It’s also worth flagging that the figures cited for Japanese players like Mitoma and Kamada are unverified claims from an anonymous message board, not official numbers. Opinions on the Saudi league were likewise split, with some dismissing it over sparse attendance and others pointing to the high salaries as a sign of its growing stature — no clear consensus emerged.

  • OpenAI Reportedly Eyeing Another ¥4.7 Trillion ($30B) Funding Round, in Talks with SoftBank and Others

US-based OpenAI has reportedly been considering an additional funding round of around $30 billion (roughly ¥4.7 trillion), ahead of rival Anthropic’s initial public offering (IPO) set for mid-November. The company is said to be in repeated talks with existing shareholders such as SoftBank Group, as well as sovereign wealth funds. On 5ch, posters repeatedly raised doubts over whether such an enormous sum could ever actually be recouped, along with concerns about delays in data center construction and the pattern of pouring ever more resources into AI’s “scaling law.” Many also wondered just how far SoftBank Group would go in providing further funding.

[Silicon Valley — Masaharu Ban] It has been learned that US-based OpenAI is considering an additional funding round of roughly $30 billion (about ¥4.7 trillion).

Reuters reported on the 19th that the company is rushing to secure funding ahead of rival Anthropic’s initial public offering (IPO), expected around mid-November.

According to Reuters, OpenAI is in talks with existing shareholders such as SoftBank Group regarding the additional funding round, and has held repeated meetings with multiple investment funds, including sovereign wealth funds.

That's assuming you can buy it cheap.
Since it's privately held, the options are limited, and if Japan ended up buying it, "TACO" (a jab at Trump as someone who "always chickens out") would probably lose it — who knows how this plays out.

Buying up a company after it went rogue and blew itself up seems pretty risky to me, though.

Background and key points of this discussion

OpenAI has already gone through several large funding rounds this year, and the fact that it’s reportedly considering yet another one right before rival Anthropic’s IPO underscores just how enormous the AI industry’s appetite for capital has become. Opinions in the thread split over how to view the “recoverability” of such a massive investment. Many posters were skeptical, pointing to reports that nearly half of planned US data center projects have been delayed or canceled, while others argued this is an investment aimed at grabbing early market share through free access — much like early YouTube. Worth noting: the original article only reports that SoftBank Group is one of the parties OpenAI is in talks with; it does not say the company has decided to provide additional funding. Missing that distinction makes the story sound further along than it actually is.

  • How to Avoid Catching a Cold? 5ch Thread: ‘There’s No Way I’m Losing to a Cold’

A post asking “Is there really a way to avoid catching colds?” drew a flood of personal experiences on 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyo G” board. Alongside standard measures like hand-washing, gargling, wearing masks, and managing humidity with a humidifier, posters shared their own tricks: drinking cheap vitamin C (ascorbic acid) every day, using saline solution for nasal rinses, and wearing a neck warmer to bed. Some said they stopped catching colds after picking up the gargling habit during the pandemic, while others leaned into sheer willpower, insisting “it’s all luck in the end” or “I just refuse to lose.” The thread split between those who swore by scientific measures and those who swore by mindset.

Background and key points of this discussion

Medically speaking, there’s no single foolproof method for preventing colds — combining basic measures like hand-washing, gargling, ventilation, and humidity control is generally what’s recommended. The thread’s favorite, taking large doses of vitamin C, lacks strong large-scale research showing it prevents colds, and the point raised in the thread (reply 76) — that since it’s water-soluble, any excess just gets excreted — is actually the more nutritionally sound take. Likewise, while some people find nasal rinsing painful (reply 33), the point that diluting it to roughly saline-solution strength minimizes irritation (reply 44) is a practical detail that’s easy to overlook. The relationship between immunity and mindset isn’t fully settled even among experts, so the thread’s “willpower” theory should be read as personal anecdote rather than established fact.

  • FF14 Offline Event Controversy Flares Up — Bandwagoning Yakiniku Vendor Draws Fire Too

Over an offline event for Square Enix’s MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV, social media comparisons arose between the official food trucks that paid vendor fees and a yakiniku (grilled meat) restaurant believed to have set up nearby to cash in without paying — sparking discussion on the forum as well. Complaints about how tickets are sold for the Fan Festival resurfaced too, with some comparing the treatment to Square Enix’s other MMORPG, Dragon Quest X. Opinions split between those suspicious of whether the timing was really a coincidence, and those who felt it’s only natural for the area around an event to get lively when people gather.

That's rock bottom for a company

Background and Key Points of This Topic

FF14’s Fan Festival has long drawn complaints over its operating policies — no single-day tickets (only two-day bundled passes), the removal of reserved seating, and cancellations refunded in in-game currency rather than cash. This time those grievances were compounded by social-media comparisons between the prices at a yakiniku restaurant operating near the venue and those of the official food truck vendors, fueling criticism that the restaurant was “cashing in without paying the vendor fee.” The thread also saw renewed comparisons of popularity with Square Enix’s other MMORPG, Dragon Quest X — worth noting that criticism of the controversy itself and the fan bases’ long-standing rivalry were unfolding side by side. Posts claiming the original critic went silent after receiving a legal disclosure request from a certain organization remain unverified speculation and are not covered in this article.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

The original article was distributed by CNN and published on Yahoo News. Its main point is that flea market app operator Vinted has stepped up removal of listings believed to be looted goods and increased monitoring of ads, while the French government is also responding. Whether an item is stolen appears to be determined mainly by matching serial numbers, not by judging sellers based on who they are. In the thread, opinions were divided over who was actually responsible for the rioting, but the article itself doesn’t address this — many comments asserting immigrant involvement as fact are based on individual posters’ speculation rather than anything confirmed by reporting, and should be read with that distinction in mind.

※This article is compiled as an excerpt and summary of the 5channel (News Express+) thread “[Breaking] Riots Sweep Across France, Looted Store Goods End Up Listed on Flea Market Apps — Louis Vuitton, Rolex Among Stolen Items.”

  • Free high school tuition doesn’t mean free choice: 80% still pay out of pocket for school supplies — 5ch: ‘Private schools are the only ones cashing in’

As free tuition for public high schools expands, a survey has found that 27% of first-year high schoolers said they “wanted to attend a private school but couldn’t choose one.” Even though tuition itself is now free, the “school enrollment fees” that private schools set independently aren’t covered by the program — in some cases the survey found these fees roughly doubled to an average of about ¥140,000, with 80% of families also covering school supply costs out of pocket. Professor Yuji Shirakawa of Chiba University suggests that the expansion of public subsidies for tuition may itself be one reason private schools raised their other fees. On 5ch, the thread split between those saying “free tuition means more families can afford private school” and critics arguing “in the end, private schools are just raising prices and pocketing the difference” — with the debate spreading to whether Osaka’s funding model is really the right approach.

Even with free tuition… private high schools’ “school enrollment fees” have roughly doubled

Professor Yuji Shirakawa (educational sociology) of Chiba University, speaking at the press conference, noted that “the expansion of public subsidies for tuition may have led private high schools to raise their other fees.”

Take Osaka as an example: sending one kid to public school costs about ¥1.08 million a year. But if they go private, the cap is ¥630,000
The schools struggling most are the private ones whose tuition runs above ¥630,000, since they have to absorb the rest themselves

That's just creating inequality in educational opportunity
Public schools exist precisely so this doesn't happen, but if money pressures push people toward private school anyway, public education loses its whole point
And if everyone ends up going private, then money for cram schools and prep schools outside of regular school becomes necessary too, which just creates a new gap there
It's a temporary win for some people during the transition, but in the end it just takes opportunity away from poorer families

In our case, my older kid is good at studying so they got into a public school with roughly a 70 hensa (academic ranking score). No uniform required either, so the initial cost was only ¥5,500 lol
My younger kid isn't great at studying, so I'm planning to send them to a private high school aiming for a "designated-school recommendation" (a guaranteed university slot reserved for certain high schools)

The school we're aiming for is right there lol
You can tell just from the price

Background and key points of this discussion

What this survey reveals is that making tuition “free” doesn’t necessarily translate into lower education costs overall. Under the program, only tuition itself is covered — “school enrollment fees,” which include things like entrance fees and facility maintenance charges, fall outside the scope of the subsidy. That means if private schools raise these other fees, the real burden on families may stay the same or even increase. The point raised by Professor Yuji Shirakawa of Chiba University highlights exactly this structural issue. The thread also referenced the free-tuition model Osaka Prefecture pioneered (a system that sets different subsidy caps for public versus private schools), with some noting that other prefectures adopting similar systems won’t necessarily see the same results. A common misunderstanding among readers is assuming that the word “free” means total education costs drop to essentially zero. In reality, enrollment fees, school supplies, commuting costs, and more remain the family’s responsibility — and this survey put numbers to just how hidden those costs can be.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (News Speed+) thread “Even with free high school tuition, 27% of first-year students say they “couldn’t choose private school” — hidden education costs revealed as “80% pay school supplies out of pocket” and “enrollment fees double to ¥140,000”“.

A post comparing how many music videos each group gets — “Tsubaki Factory gets new MVs even for songs that aren’t singles” versus “Juice=Juice can’t even get an MV for a new song, let alone a single, during a crucial period” — went viral on X (formerly Twitter), sparking a wave of reactions on 5ch’s Hello! Commenters zeroed in on the fact that Tsubaki Factory has already gotten multiple MVs this year while Juice=Juice has gotten only one, offering theories ranging from how Up-Front allocates its budget, to differences in each group’s buzz, to whether a group has a tie-up deal with a local government. Opinions were split on the spending itself, with some offering harsh assessments likening it to “bureaucratic silo mentality.”

Juice=Juice has been posting tons of live footage all along, so it evens out, I guess.
    45AnonymousOct 21, 2026 21:40
Tsubaki's getting resources dumped on them for nothing, seriously.
Wish the agency would just give up on them already.
    57AnonymousOct 21, 2026 21:43
"Bura-Bare" doesn't have an ounce of love from the people who made it for Juice,
but this one? You can feel the love for Tsubaki — and especially for Maopin (a member's nickname).

It's fine if Morning Musume。 stays the top dog,
but this agency panics the moment any other group threatens to break out.

If they actually cared about that, they wouldn't be neglecting Morning Musume。 this hard.

Background and Key Points of This Debate

Hello! Project runs multiple idol groups under the same agency, Up-Front, and it’s long been said that MV and video production isn’t handled uniformly across groups — it tends to skew based on buzz and promotional judgment calls. What sparked this discussion was the asymmetry: Tsubaki Factory has gotten multiple MVs even for songs that weren’t single releases, while Juice=Juice has had far fewer such opportunities. Within the thread, people pointed to possible explanations like whether a group has tie-up deals with local governments or regional broadcasters, and differences in each group’s recent buzz. That said, these are just speculation on 5ch, not an official explanation of the agency’s production policy or budget allocation. Judging a group’s “standing” by MV count alone is one-sided — it’s worth keeping in mind that different groups may be leaning on different promotional approaches, such as livestreamed concert footage or standalone streaming pushes for individual songs.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Hello! Project) thread “X: “Tsubaki gets a new MV even though it’s not a single” / “Juice=Juice can’t even get a new-song MV, let alone a single, during a crucial period”.”

  • PHP Vulnerability Forces Major Services into Emergency Shutdown — 5ch: “Open Season for Account Takeovers”

A highly critical vulnerability has been discovered in PHP, the programming language widely used in web development, prompting a string of prominent services — including the childcare-facility SaaS “Kodomon,” the card game “Shadowverse: Worlds Beyond,” the online shop-building service “BASE,” and Sakura Internet’s rental servers — to go into emergency maintenance one after another on October 21, 2026. On 5ch, reactions split over what ordinary users should do right now, and over which companies got it “right”: the ones that moved fast, or the ones that were slow to react.

Prominent IT services rush into emergency maintenance one after another — Kodomon, Shadowverse, BASE, Sakura’s rental servers, and more — likely due to a “PHP” vulnerability

Prominent services including the childcare SaaS “Kodomon,” the game “Shadowverse: Worlds Beyond,” and “Sakura’s Rental Server” have gone into emergency maintenance one after another, or announced maintenance starting around 11pm that same night. This appears to stem from a highly critical vulnerability found in PHP, the programming language widely used in web development.

Other services expected to take similar action include the online shop-building service “BASE,” the rental server “X Server,” the online sales-event platform “pictSQUARE,” the official site of recycle shop “Kimble,” and the crowdsourcing site “Tsunagu.” Among these, Shadowverse: Worlds Beyond, Kimble, pictSQUARE, and BASE have confirmed — via their own announcements or reporting by ITmedia NEWS — that PHP is the cause.

Okay, for a real answer: an attack tool going around called something like "PHP2shell" that exploits this had already spread worldwide by October 20 (Japan time)
So shutting sites down in the afternoon of October 21 is already way too late
There's definitely a mountain of leaked data out there by now, for sure

    90AnonymousOct 21, 2026 21:38
Okay, for real this time: there are tons of sites shut down right now
If you logged into any of them between October 20 and whenever they closed, you should just assume your info got stolen
If you reused that login password anywhere else, you're done
    Change it right now
    115AnonymousOct 21, 2026 21:47
    Re: #90
How are you supposed to change your password if the site's already closed?

Background and key points of debate

PHP is a server-side language used everywhere from personal websites to corporate core systems, and because so many services share the same underlying stack, a single vulnerability can spread its impact very quickly. The companies named in the article went into maintenance at the stage where they might be affected, and not all of them have officially confirmed the nature of the vulnerability. In the thread, two views run side by side: that “attacks are already underway, so taking countermeasures now is too late,” and that “the companies shutting down right now are actually the fastest to respond” — neither claim comes with verifiable evidence. For ordinary users, the real risk isn’t getting hit just by visiting an affected site; it’s account takeover if you reused a password from an affected service somewhere else. So the top priority right now is simply to stop reusing passwords across services.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from a 5ch (Nandemo Jikkyo G) thread titled “PHP vulnerability looking seriously bad. Sites that can’t respond by 11pm tonight are at risk of being taken over.”
