  • “Oden-Poking Man” Shows Up to Daughter’s Sports Day With Tattoos on Full Display, Sparks Debate — 5ch: “Cover That Up!”

Yusuke Toyoshima, a former professional snowboarder known for the 2016 “oden-poking incident” and now a YouTuber with 30,000 subscribers, posted on X on October 20 that he’d attended his daughter’s sports day without covering up his tattoos, asking, “Is it really that bad?” The post racked up over 2 million views and drew a sharply divided reaction. On 5ch, criticism of “cover it up” clashed with counterarguments that “being spooked by tattoos is the real cowardice,” turning the thread into a debate over Japan’s differing social attitudes toward tattoos.

On October 20, Yusuke Toyoshima, known as the “Oden-Poking Man” (30,000 subscribers), revealed on X that he had gone to his daughter’s sports day without hiding his tattoos, and asked whether it was really such a problem. The post went on to be viewed over 2 million times, drawing a wave of criticism.

Ten Years Since the Oden-Poking Incident

Back in 2016, Toyoshima sparked a huge backlash online after posting a video of himself poking at oden marked for disposal with his finger at a closed convenience store, leading to his arrest on suspicion of forcible obstruction of business (he was later not indicted). A former pro snowboarder, he now runs two skateboard shops and parks in Aichi Prefecture while giving talks nationwide. In 2022, he launched a YouTube channel where he’s spoken about the truth behind the “oden-poking incident.”

Isn't the reason tattoos get banned at public baths just that there's literally no way to cover them once your clothes are off?

If we start tolerating this, actual gangsters ('the real deal') will start flashing theirs too, and that's when things get ugly.

Must have a pretty gorgeous face yourself, then.
Do you shave your leg hair too?

    Background and Points of Debate

Tattoos are widely shunned in Japan largely due to their historical association with organized crime, which led public baths and hot springs to broadly bar anyone with visible ink — though no actual law bans showing tattoos in public. Toyoshima was arrested in 2016 on suspicion of forcible obstruction of business over the “oden-poking incident” but was never indicted, and he now runs a skate shop in Aichi Prefecture while staying active on YouTube. In the thread, opinions split between those who viewed it as a matter of personal freedom (“being bothered by it is oversensitive”) and those who felt some consideration was warranted given that a children’s sports day is a public setting — no consensus was reached. It’s also worth noting that some posts dismissed supportive comments as “auto-posts from paid shills,” though none of these claims were backed by any evidence and remain pure speculation.

    Background and Points of Debate

After breaking through with self-deprecating comedy, Hiroshi drew renewed attention through his solo-camping video content, and has a history of showing off various vehicles on social media, including a Jimny and an XR250. The “fire pit” controversy repeatedly brought up in the thread isn’t mentioned in the original article itself — it’s discussed only within the replies — so there’s no way to tell from the article alone where fact ends and speculation begins. Opinions split over how to read the change in his vehicle of choice (from his beloved Jimny to a Harley): some see it as a natural broadening of his interests, others as part of an image strategy, a debate tangled up with how people already judge the earlier controversy. Readers should keep in mind that the “outcome of the controversy” discussed in the thread includes speculation from 5ch users, and that the only fact the article itself actually reports is the post showing off his motorcycle.

  • Nirvana’s Nevermind Ranks as the 6th Best-Selling Album of All Time — Jackson’s Thriller Takes No. 1

Independent music data platform Chartmasters has calculated that Nirvana’s “Nevermind” has overtaken AC/DC’s “Back in Black” to become the 6th best-selling album worldwide of all time. The ranking is based on a metric called “Equivalent Album Sales (EAS),” which combines not just actual physical sales of vinyl and CDs but also digital downloads and streaming, with greatest-hits and compilation albums excluded under the rules. On 5ch, posters debated everything from the Beatles landing at only No. 9, to how the Eagles are counted, to whether Nirvana’s placement is even deserved.

According to independent music data platform Chartmasters, Nirvana’s “Nevermind” has overtaken AC/DC’s “Back in Black” to become the 6th best-selling album worldwide of all time.

Chartmasters bases its rankings on actual sales figures and streaming data, calculating a total “Equivalent Album Sales (EAS)” figure that combines physical format sales, digital downloads, and streaming. Compilation albums and greatest hits are excluded, and under the rules, sales of singles — or of tracks that appear on compilations or best-ofs — are credited back to the original studio album the song first appeared on.

Per Chartmasters’ ranking, “Back In Black” actually leads in vinyl sales (37 million copies versus 30 million), but once the other factors are combined — tracks appearing on other albums, physical singles, digital singles, and streaming — “Nevermind” ends up ranking above “Back In Black” overall.

    Re: #82
It's still No. 1 by a landslide, as far as I know.

Background and Key Points of the Debate

The “Equivalent Album Sales (EAS)” metric Chartmasters uses is calculated by adding digital downloads and streaming plays on top of actual physical sales — a different measure from simple shipment totals. As the source article explains, greatest-hits and compilation albums are excluded from the ranking, and a track’s sales are credited back to the original album it first appeared on. As seen in the thread, where some posters mistakenly read “Thriller” as having sold 130 million physical copies, EAS tends to produce numbers far larger than the traditional shipment-figure image, which can feel jarring next to older sales data. There’s also a structural quirk for artists like the Beatles, who were active in the 1960s: since their sales are concentrated in an era before streaming existed, their totals don’t grow the way later artists’ do. Without understanding these premises behind the ranking, it’s easy to misread the results as proof that “this artist is underrated.”

  • Blu-ray Beat DVD on Picture Quality and Capacity, But Died Out First Anyway — 5ch: ‘Maybe Because It’s a SONY Format?’

Blu-ray, launched under Sony’s leadership as DVD’s successor, surpassed DVD in both resolution and storage capacity — yet it faded from mainstream use before DVD did, as streaming services and large-capacity memory became widespread. This phenomenon sparked discussion on the Hardware/Industry (Geha) board. The thread kicked off with the jab “it’s because it’s a SONY format,” then moved on to a string of practical reasons: its limited value as game install media, the technical weakness of a thin protective layer that hurts durability, and the high cost of annual licensing fees and disc pressing. Meanwhile, some pushed back with “DVD hasn’t really survived either,” and there was disagreement even over the basic premise of which format actually died out first.

    Blu-ray's basically junk now.
    20AnonymousOct 21, 2026 14:50
It's better than DVD in pretty much every way, yet DVD is still the only one you can actually buy. That's sad.
    22AnonymousOct 21, 2026 14:52
You have to keep paying licensing fees every year for the copy-protection/security, and pressing the master disc alone runs around 500,000 yen (~$3,300).
    23AnonymousOct 21, 2026 14:53
Demand on the recording/recordable side dried up first, pushing it to the brink of extinction (Sony already discontinued production on that side in 2025).
All that's left now is sales of movies, anime, and games, but that alone probably isn't enough to keep the whole Blu-ray format afloat.
    24AnonymousOct 21, 2026 14:53
Compared to the jump from videotape to DVD, going from DVD to Blu-ray was just a bump in picture quality, so most people were satisfied with DVD.

    Re: #29
HD DVD's advantage was having the same durability as DVD.
Its protective layer was the same 0.6mm thickness.
    It could even be resurfaced/polished.

Blu-ray's layer is only 0.1mm, and if you're unlucky it can die within a year.
    30AnonymousOct 21, 2026 14:56
It's because TVs got so advanced that we reached an era where even Blu-ray looks shoddy by comparison.

    Re: #66
Those still exist today — bundles like DVD+BD and BD+UHD-BD. Just looking at the retail (sell-through) editions alone shows how little Blu-ray actually caught on. As distribution media or for everyday use, the BD format was useless across the board — DVD is still what gets bundled with CDs and books most of the time. On top of that, USB drives and SD cards got bigger capacity, and HDDs were cheap and cost-effective, so Blu-ray doesn't even get used for primary storage.

    Neither of them is discontinued.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Blu-ray is an optical disc format led by Sony that won the format war against Toshiba’s HD DVD to become the dominant standard around 2008. To accommodate recording time and copy-protection needs, its protective layer was made thinner than DVD’s — about 0.1mm versus DVD’s 0.6mm. This was a deliberate trade-off made possible by scratch-resistant hard-coat technology, so the thread’s complaint about “weak durability” isn’t just a vague impression — it reflects a real design trade-off. Also, post #28’s claim that “Blu-ray doesn’t support HDR” technically refers only to the standard format; a separate format called “Ultra HD Blu-ray,” introduced in 2016, does support 4K and HDR, and it’s worth noting the two are easy to mix up. Demand for recording and data storage uses faded first thanks to cloud storage and cheaper HDDs, leaving packaged media sales as the only thing propping up the format today — so the thread’s counterargument that “DVD might actually have died first” isn’t clear-cut either, depending on when you measure the decline of recording use.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Hardware/Industry [Geha]) thread “Blu-ray: “I’m clearer than DVD, bigger capacity, a SONY format” ← Here’s why this thing died out before DVD did”.

On the night of October 20, voice actress Megumi Ogata (61) opened up on X about the pressures of her work, writing, “Honestly, I feel like I could die every day. It’s exhausting, I can’t take it anymore,” while also adding the hopeful note, “Somehow I’ll get through tomorrow too.” The veteran voice actress, known since the ’90s for roles including Shinji Ikari in Neon Genesis Evangelion, Sailor Uranus in Sailor Moon, and Princess Emeraude in Magic Knight Rayearth, drew a flood of reactions on 5ch’s Geinou/Sports Breaking News+ board. Opinions were split — some said she should distance herself from social media, others pointed to her recent tendency toward controversial posts, and still others sympathized with the grueling workload.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Megumi Ogata has been known since the 1990s for roles like Shinji Ikari in Evangelion, and remains an active veteran voice actress today, appearing in a wide range of works including Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun. In recent years her political comments on social media have also drawn attention, which is part of why opinions about her personality are so divided in the thread. While this particular post was about the pressures of her work, the term “タヒ” (tahi) is a stylized way some online communities write “死” (death) to sidestep the word itself — it’s not meant to suggest suicidal intent but is a colloquial exaggeration emphasizing how busy she is, a nuance readers can easily misread. The thread split between harsh views toward a prominent figure airing complaints and views pointing to the stress of social media use itself, while many comments also fondly reminisced about her signature roles, with the discussion ranging from debates about work to career retrospectives.

If I analyze it seriously: Inmu and gay jokes don't poke at any complexes that "loser" men have.

Most mainstream content revolves around work, romance, marriage, income, education — things that constantly poke at a loser man's insecurities and trauma. But Inmu and gay jokes have zero connection to any of that, so those men can mock it without feeling a shred of negative emotion.
It's basically the same mechanism as fujoshi (female BL fans) getting hooked on BL (boys' love) content.

He probably doesn't even know about any of this in the first place.
We don't even know if Yajuu Senpai is still alive,
and he might well wish nobody would touch this at all.

Background and key points of this discussion

“Yajuu Senpai” is a figure from a scene in an early-2000s adult video that got turned into a meme through the “Inmu” (lewd-dream) culture that originated on Niconico Douga and 2channel; the performer has never once revealed his real identity in roughly 20 years. Posters on the thread pointed out that this very anonymity is exactly what keeps the legend alive. Some posts suggested the trend caught on in China partly because the video platform Bilibili was less likely to flag this kind of content for censorship — but that’s just one poster’s personal theory, not an officially confirmed fact. The same caution applies to posts speculating about why the Communist Party lets this content slide — that, too, is just speculation within the thread. Against the backdrop of strained Japan-China relations, the thread showed its usual mixed character: some comments framed this cultural exchange in a positive light, while others drifted off into unrelated political tangents.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Geisokuho+) thread “27.4 million total views! Japan’s gay-scene export “INMU KING” captivates Chinese youth! Will Yajuu Senpai become the messiah who saves strained Japan-China relations!?“

  • From Peasant to Supreme Ruler: Why Hideyoshi Still Stalls at #7 in Popularity Rankings

And yet in the 2026 “Favorite Warring States Warlord” ranking, he sits at a mere 7th place, behind Oda Nobunaga, Date Masamune, and Tokugawa Ieyasu. A thread on 5ch dug into why there’s such a gap between how “impressive” he was and how “popular” he is, raising theories from several angles — the image created by his nickname “Monkey,” his failure to leave an heir, and how he lost power to Ieyasu after the invasions of Korea — without ever landing on a single answer.

Is the “impressive” fact that Hideyoshi became supreme ruler just hard for people to relate to?

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

One reason the thread kept circling back to for why Hideyoshi’s popularity doesn’t match his achievements is the weakness of his succession. He died with the heir question still unresolved, and power ultimately passed to Tokugawa Ieyasu. The view in the thread is that this gap in evaluation comes down to the fact that Ieyasu was blessed with children and could lay the groundwork for a long-lasting regime, while Hideyoshi couldn’t. Commenters also pointed out that the image attached to his “Monkey” nickname, along with how he’s portrayed in NHK’s Taiga historical dramas, likely shapes voting behavior — showing that popularity can’t be measured by the scale of one’s achievements alone. Since “favorite warlord” rankings are a yearly survey whose results shift from year to year, reading a single snapshot ranking as a direct verdict on his accomplishments may be premature.

  • Actress Rina Takeda Gives Up Trying to Stop Being Confused With Rena Takeda — 5ch: ‘Even Her Own Family Mixes Them Up, So What Can You Do’

Actress Rina Takeda (35), in an interview ahead of the release of her starring film “Period,” revealed that she has “given up” trying to resolve the confusion with actress Rena Takeda, whose name differs by just one character. Her comment, “Even my own family mixes us up, so it can’t be helped,” sparked a flood of posts on 5ch sharing personal mix-up stories about celebrities with similar names. Posts citing other cases of this kind of “name overlap” — like Miki Mizuno and Maki Mizuno, or Mirai Shida and Sara Shida — stood out, with many comments also comparing the two women’s careers and public image.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Rina Takeda and Rena Takeda are actresses of the same generation who both debuted in the early 2010s, and confusion arising from their “one-character-different” names is a phenomenon that has repeatedly made waves in the entertainment industry. Rina Takeda has built her career as the lead in action films, while Rena Takeda is known for gravure modeling and commercials — different fields of work, but the closeness of their names has led to years of mix-ups. In the thread, example after example of similarly-named celebrities being confused came up, such as “Miki Mizuno and Maki Mizuno” and “Mirai Shida and Sara Shida,” underscoring that one-character name differences are far from rare in the industry. At the same time, the discussion often drifted into comparing the two women’s looks and which one commenters “preferred,” though this article avoids excessive appearance-based commentary or speculation about their private lives beyond their actual work. The mix-up itself is a fact Takeda herself has acknowledged, saying “even my own family mixes us up” — the comment this article’s headline is built on.

  • Shohei Ohtani to Keep Up Two-Way Play Next Season — Surgery on Injured Areas Under Consideration This Offseason; 5ch: “Don’t Try to Rein In a Genius”

U.S. media report that the Dodgers’ Shohei Ohtani, reflecting on an injury-plagued 2026 season as “really frustrating,” has signaled his intent to keep playing two-way (both pitching and hitting) next season (2027) as well. As for the state of his left knee and right biceps, surgery is reportedly among the options being considered during the offseason. Following the report from a Sports Illustrated journalist, reactions on 5ch were split. Some voices backed him, saying “just let the genius do what he wants,” while others were skeptical given his repeated injuries, worrying “won’t this just mean another long layoff?” Some posts also dredged up the past episode in which he reportedly hadn’t told the team about discomfort in his right arm.

The Dodgers’ Shohei Ohtani, having wrapped up an injury-plagued 2026 season, revealed his feelings, calling it “really frustrating.”

While the issues with his left knee and right biceps may involve surgery as an option during the offseason, he indicated he intends to keep playing two-way in 2027.

Sports Illustrated reporter Gabe Smallson disclosed this on October 17 (October 18 in Japan time).

Background and Key Points of This Topic

The debate over injury risk tied to two-way play has been a recurring theme ever since Ohtani first took on the challenge of playing in MLB, and this thread isn’t breaking any new ground on that front. In particular, regarding the right biceps issue, there’s a backstory in which he reportedly didn’t promptly report the problem to the team during the season, and several posts in the thread touch on that point. One thing worth noting: this information is based on reporting by a Sports Illustrated journalist, and surgery remains strictly at the “under consideration” stage — it is not a confirmed team announcement about whether or when it will happen. Reading just the headline, it’s easy to assume the surgery has already been decided, but in reality, the plan for next season depends on how the offseason unfolds and on the final decision made by Ohtani and the team.

  • Elderly Drivers in Rural Japan Can’t Surrender Their Licenses — 5ch: ‘The Bus Comes Once a Day’

A news article about elderly drivers being pressured to surrender their licenses sparked discussion on 5ch. A post from a rural resident — “it’s an hour’s walk to the nearest station, and the bus only comes once a day” — set off a wave of comments pointing out just how badly public transit has collapsed, noting that even municipal community buses often run only about twice a day. Others pushed back on blaming age alone, arguing “you shouldn’t make the elderly the only villains — plenty of young people drive dangerously too,” while some stressed that surrendering a license is a personal choice, not a legal duty. The debate split over how to balance safety with keeping daily life workable.

    13AnonymousOct 21, 2026 11:35
You shouldn't make the elderly the only villains here,
because there are plenty of idiots nationwide — young people included — who drive more dangerously than old folks do.
    16AnonymousOct 21, 2026 11:37
What exactly do you need to go out for that badly, anyway?
    31AnonymousOct 21, 2026 11:46
    Re: #16
Mainly food runs and hospital visits.
    18AnonymousOct 21, 2026 11:37
If you don't want to surrender your license, you don't have to.
In exchange, elderly drivers do have to take a cognitive function test at renewal time, right?
Just pass the cognitive test — pass it and you get to renew.
    26AnonymousOct 21, 2026 11:42
    Re: #18
Problem is, some places run that cognitive test way too loosely.
    20AnonymousOct 21, 2026 11:38
Should've gotten ready for this before it came to that.
    21AnonymousOct 21, 2026 11:40
If you're confident you can drive safely, you don't have to surrender your license at all.
Surrendering isn't a government order or a legal obligation — it's voluntary, so decide for yourself.
If you're Japanese citizens, actually learn the law. Surrender is not mandatory.

    Re: #1
    Stay off the national highways.
    Don't get on the expressway.
Don't drive a car without safety features.
Don't take any route except the one to the store or the hospital.
Renew your license every six months.

If you don't like it, don't drive.
    24AnonymousOct 21, 2026 11:41
If you don't want to surrender it, then don't.
    End of story.
    25AnonymousOct 21, 2026 11:42
But then it's always 'did you mix up the gas and the brake…?' → 'Should've surrendered your license, old man!'
    Either way, it's on you.
    27AnonymousOct 21, 2026 11:42
As long as you hold a license, you're allowed to drive at 90, even 100.
That's exactly what the law of this country permits.
Pass the eyesight and cognitive tests and there's no problemo~ (a jokey, slangy twist on 'no problem')
    30AnonymousOct 21, 2026 11:45
Pedal mix-ups are common among the elderly, but the accident stories that actually make the news aren't about old people, are they?
    32AnonymousOct 21, 2026 11:46
Who's the idiot that designed this whole country around cars for everything, not just logistics and delivery?
    33AnonymousOct 21, 2026 11:46
People with no talent should probably 'surrender' too (a joke playing on 返納/surrender also meaning 'give up').
    34AnonymousOct 21, 2026 11:47
And here you lot are surrendering your hair back to the gods (a pun — 'hair' and 'god' are both pronounced 'kami').
    39AnonymousOct 21, 2026 12:04
Still got years to go before my 60th (kanreki), but the other day I scraped the side of my car turning left into a supermarket.
I'd stopped short to let a JC (junior-high schoolgirl) pass by, then turned left without pulling forward first.
    41AnonymousOct 21, 2026 12:05
The city runs a community bus, but it's only 2 runs a day — hopelessly inconvenient.
And for some reason it doesn't even run on weekends and holidays, lol.
They're just putting on a show of 'doing something.'
    42AnonymousOct 21, 2026 12:07
They built this whole annoying renewal system just for the elderly, and it's still not working.
    43AnonymousOct 21, 2026 12:07
Even if they tell us to 'just use public transit,'
the regular bus routes keep disappearing one after another.
    45AnonymousOct 21, 2026 12:08
Out in the countryside, buses can run like once every four hours.
    48AnonymousOct 21, 2026 12:10
Should make full use of online medical consultations and mail-order shopping.
    49AnonymousOct 21, 2026 12:10
Is it the old guys who are getting irritated in this thread, of course?
    50AnonymousOct 21, 2026 12:11
It's your own fault for staying put somewhere far from the city center when you knew this was coming.
    51AnonymousOct 21, 2026 12:12
It's not like I chose to live out in some lone house in the middle of nowhere ('Potsun to Ikkoya'-style) —
it's that what used to be the town center turned into a dying, depopulated community (genkai shūraku) over time.
    52AnonymousOct 21, 2026 12:13
The very act of an old person driving a car puts other people at risk,
so no matter how inconvenient it makes your own life, you shouldn't drag others into that danger.
    53AnonymousOct 21, 2026 12:13
How soon until self-driving tech is actually good enough to cover situations like this?
    57AnonymousOct 21, 2026 12:18
    Re: #53
    It already can.
    60AnonymousOct 21, 2026 12:19
    Re: #53
The government and the law won't allow it.
First they need to set up a system where those people can profit from it.
    54AnonymousOct 21, 2026 12:15
Wasn't it just 'if you can sit down in the chair for the eye test and then stand back up, your motor function is fine'?
    55AnonymousOct 21, 2026 12:16
Self-driving taxis in Tokyo start next year,
and autonomous large delivery trucks are starting next year too.
    56AnonymousOct 21, 2026 12:18
The punchline's probably that the rural minibuses — the ones running Toyota HiAce vans — are driven by elderly drivers too, right?

Background and Key Points of the Debate

Surrendering a driver’s license is not a legal requirement for the elderly — under current rules, drivers 75 and older can keep driving as long as they pass a cognitive function test at renewal. The split in the thread came down to whether age itself is the problem, or whether what matters is an individual’s actual driving skill and history of dangerous driving. In rural areas, bus routes keep getting cut, and even municipal community buses often run only a handful of times a day in many regions — meaning that surrendering a license translates directly into real hardship. Self-driving technology is starting to see real-world rollout in city taxis and large trucks, but commenters pointed out that regulations haven’t caught up yet. News coverage of accidents at crossings and intersections often involves non-elderly drivers too, which is why pinning danger on age alone is easy to get wrong.
