  • Edion’s PS5 Stock Narrows to Just the “Japanese DE Double Pack” — 5ch Asks “Is This a De Facto Withdrawal?”

Users on 5ch noticed that electronics retailer Edion’s online store now lists only one PS5 model in stock: the “Japanese-language-only DualSense Wireless Controller Double Pack” (CFIJ10032). Adding to the intrigue, the standalone listing for the PS5 Disc Drive has switched to reading “The selected item does not exist” — a display some posters say differs from Edion’s normal out-of-stock behavior. The thread connected this to the lack of any new PS5 hardware news at the previous day’s State of Play showcase and to Japan’s sluggish weekly sales figures, with opinions split between “this is effectively an exit from the Japanese market” and “it’s just routine inventory shuffling.” (Note: on 5ch, “名無しさん必死だな” — rendered here as “Anonymous” — is a running joke default username roughly meaning “Anonymous is desperate,” used automatically in this particular board’s threads.)

There was never much stock to begin with.

It's a dead console at this point.

Looks like the Japan-exclusive PS5 DE is pulling out, at the very least.
    10Anonymous2026/09/04 (Fri) 11:36:44.96
'Does not exist' — so that's a full stop, huh.
    And now the withdrawal begins.

He'd posted before about buying a Disc Drive, so I figured that meant the Disc Drive itself was being discontinued —
but is it really ending for good by the end of the year?
    18Anonymous2026/09/04 (Fri) 11:38:30.73
If you watched the State of Play you'd already know — they have zero intention of selling units right now.
    19Anonymous2026/09/04 (Fri) 11:39:01.64
These guys hiked the price right before Wilds launched, no mercy.
I'd laugh if they pulled the same move right before GTA6.
    23Anonymous2026/09/04 (Fri) 11:39:35.35
Wouldn't surprise me if the plan is to just dribble out enough units to cover games still releasing on disc, until even that winds down.
    31Anonymous2026/09/04 (Fri) 11:41:26.54
    Re: #23
If that's really the plan, at least keep the Disc Drive itself in stock…
    24Anonymous2026/09/04 (Fri) 11:39:57.03
Turns out there was no demand for the Japan-only model in the first place.
Turns out nobody was even watching the Japan-only State of Play either.
    It's just too sad 😭
    26Anonymous2026/09/04 (Fri) 11:41:02.98
Couldn't keep up with soaring memory prices, or couldn't keep dealing with a Japanese market that's basically become a shipping waypoint to the mainland — hard to say which.
    29Anonymous2026/09/04 (Fri) 11:41:17.60
Japan model discontinued, price hiked — heading toward the ¥80,000 range, I'd guess?

Not interested enough to know for sure, but the listing reads:
'SIE PlayStation 5 Digital Edition, Japanese-only, Console Language: Japanese only, DualSense Wireless Controller Double Pack, CFIJ10032'
so I guess that means two wireless controllers?
    37Anonymous2026/09/04 (Fri) 11:42:06.73
What are hardcore PlayStation loyalists even supposed to do with this…
    38Anonymous2026/09/04 (Fri) 11:42:11.33
Besides, selling Digital Editions doesn't drive attached game sales the same way — that's actually a real problem.
    41Anonymous2026/09/04 (Fri) 11:42:29.36
Isn't this effectively a withdrawal from the domestic market?
They're only moving something like 6,000 units a week, and 'we just have a pile of unsold stock' is an awkward excuse to make.
It's basically sold out nationwide and they're not shipping more — Japan is being deprioritized.
Framing it as 'effectively withdrawing from the domestic market' gives them a cleaner excuse and lets everyone save face.
Better to just go with that story.
Either way, face is preserved as long as you don't think of it as an embarrassing flop everyone's laughing at.
    47Anonymous2026/09/04 (Fri) 11:43:27.43
So you're saying the Double Pack sold so badly it was just piling up unsold?

    74Anonymous2026/09/04 (Fri) 12:00:01.22
I hope the bad news isn't that they're selling the business off to a Chinese or Middle Eastern buyer.

A total withdrawal would still be preferable to that.

I was sure they'd announce a GTA bundle at yesterday's State of Play.
Whatever else happens that would move a solid 500,000 units, easily more pulling power than any Japanese game announced on the Japan-focused State of Play.
    92Anonymous2026/09/04 (Fri) 12:19:20.85

    No way.

    Re: #91
The only reason they're turning a profit right now is by not selling hardware, not making more of it, not developing new games, and not planning a PS6.

Doesn't Edion normally just pull the page before restocking, though?
    109Anonymous2026/09/04 (Fri) 12:39:36.94
    Re: #108
In that case the listed quantity doesn't drop.

    Background and Key Points

The PS5 Digital Edition (DE) is the disc-drive-less model, and it’s generally considered a harder sell in the Japanese market than the standard version. The Double Pack (CFIJ10032) mentioned in the thread is a spring-2026 variant bundled with two DualSense controllers, and it’s possible this model simply had limited distribution to begin with. As for the Disc Drive listing switching to “the selected item does not exist” — posts #108 and #109 point out that this differs from how the page normally behaves during a routine stockout, though the article’s available information isn’t enough to say definitively whether this is a simple shortage or a discontinuation. Figures like “roughly 6,000 units sold per week” and claims that Sony has scaled back new game development and marketing in Japan are speculation from the thread, not official statements, and should be read with that caveat. The absence of any new hardware or accessory announcements at the previous day’s State of Play was cited in the thread as further fuel for the speculation.

  • Overseas Amazon Bestseller Charts Split by Country: PS5 vs. Switch 2 — 5ch: “Losing even right after the price hike?”

On 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (“Geha”) board, a thread about overseas Amazon best-seller rankings for game consoles took off. In Canada, the PS5 ranked 3rd and the Switch 2 ranked 7th, and replies quickly piled on with rankings from the US and UK too, revealing a split between winners and losers depending on the country. The thread also broke into arguments over the reliability of sales-estimate site VGChartz, with posters divided on which data source to trust.

Background and key points of this debate

“Amaran” (Amazon’s bestseller ranking) is shaped by stock levels and temporary sales as much as by actual unit sales, so it’s premature to crown a winner by country based on ranking position alone. VGChartz, the sales-estimate site cited in the thread, is commonly referenced overseas, but questions about its accuracy have come up repeatedly. On pricing, while Japan is abuzz over the Switch 2 price hike, several posters note that in the US and Europe, Switch 2 remains cheaper than PS5 even now — so the regional price picture doesn’t necessarily line up the same way everywhere. Few countries publish actual unit-sales figures, and most of the comparisons here rely on the indirect proxy of rankings, which is worth keeping in mind while reading this thread.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Hardware/Industry “Geha”) thread “[Sad News] Switch 2, after its price hike, starts losing to PS5 in overseas Amazon rankings“.

  • Kazunori Yamauchi’s Claim That ‘Lots of Families Enjoy GT7 Together’ Draws Skepticism on 5ch

Kazunori Yamauchi, the father of the Gran Turismo series at Polyphony Digital, sparked discussion on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry board (Geha) after saying, ‘I think a lot of people enjoy Gran Turismo 7 together as a family.’ The thread quickly filled with responses like ‘no one does that’ and ‘most PS users are single middle-aged men,’ with some posters mockingly comparing it to his previously memed comment about ‘enjoying The Evil Within with his grandkids.’ Others brought up Astro’s Playroom winning a family-friendly award and compared the situation to Forza Horizon, leaving the thread divided over just how much of a family game GT7 really is.

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

Gran Turismo 7 is a racing simulator released in 2022 for PS5/PS4, and Kazunori Yamauchi has led the series for many years as its developer. The thread doesn’t specify where or when the comment was made, so the context is unclear. What divided opinion in the thread was the actual makeup of the PlayStation user base: while the self-deprecating notion that PS is ‘for single middle-aged men’ has become a running joke among users, most posters felt Yamauchi’s comment was out of touch with that reality. That said, it’s worth noting that PlayStation does have family-oriented titles, as shown by Astro’s Playroom winning a family-focused award. It’s also worth flagging that his earlier remark about ‘enjoying The Evil Within with his grandkids’ has been repeatedly cited as a running joke, even though its authenticity has never actually been confirmed.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Hardware/Industry (Geha)) thread “Polyphony’s Yamauchi: ‘I think a lot of people enjoy Gran Turismo 7 together as a family’ — really?“.

  • KONAMI Direct’s Two New Games See Sluggish Trailer Views, Sparking Debate on 5ch

KONAMI’s official channel posted its “KONAMI Direct,” which stalled at just 30,000 views, and the individually featured trailers for the two new titles, ‘Revenoir’ and ‘Rhapsody,’ each fell short of 10,000 views — a fact that became a hot topic on 5ch’s hardware/industry board. While some in the thread declared the low view counts a “flop,” others pushed back, arguing that video views don’t necessarily correlate with actual sales. The discussion also touched on complaints about underwhelming graphics, interest in the development staff’s backgrounds, and console-war-style bickering over the games’ lack of Switch support, turning it into a discussion that went well beyond a simple evaluation of the new titles.

Well, the Revenoir team has an ex-Square Enix person on it, so yeah.
They worked on stuff like LoV and Gunslinger Stratos, not console titles, so it's unclear how far they can take it.
The Rhapsody team seems to have someone who's done a bunch at KONAMI — directed Tokimeki Memorial 3, worked on the Vita remake of the ARPG Osama Monogatari (King's Tale), and more.
KONAMI's old guard has probably been away from console dev for so long it'll end up like that rough recent Contra.

    Re: #102
Guess the real question is whether we'll even be able to see the numbers.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

In recent years KONAMI has been rolling out a steady stream of new titles that build on IPs and know-how it’s cultivated in the past, and this reveal of ‘Revenoir’ and ‘Rhapsody’ is part of that same trend. As pointed out in the thread, judging eventual sales purely from view counts right after a video drops is inherently difficult — commenters cited Nintendo’s own official ‘ELDEN RING’ intro video topping 1 million views while the game itself sold only around 20,000 copies, suggesting that even high view counts don’t guarantee big sales, so drawing a direct line between views and sales calls for caution. There was also discussion of the development staff’s backgrounds (including a former Square Enix staffer and someone who has worked on titles like ‘Tokimeki Memorial 3’ within KONAMI), reflecting a degree of genuine anticipation and evaluation of the new games themselves. At the same time, posts stoking console-war-style hostility over the lack of Switch support were mixed in, making this thread a blend of genuine critique of the games and inter-console antagonism.

※This article is compiled and summarized from the 5ch (Hardware/Industry (Geha)) thread “[Sad news] KONAMI Direct hits 30,000 views… Revenoir and Rhapsody both fail to reach 10,000 views, flop confirmed…“

  • PlayStation’s New Game Showcase Panned as ‘No Highlights’ — 5ch Calls It ‘Worst Broadcast Ever’

Sony’s latest “State of Play” broadcast, streamed in the early hours of September 4, 2026, is getting torn apart on 5ch’s gaming boards. The roughly one-hour-45-minute show — split between Western and Japanese game segments — was light on genuinely new announcements and wrapped up with an interview with voice actress Ai Fairouz. About the only things resembling highlights were DLC for “Ghost of Yotei” and news that “Final Fantasy VII Remake Part 3” will also come to Switch 2. Some in the thread are calling it “the worst broadcast ever.”

State of Play (Japanese subtitles, Western game lineup) — one hour
State of Play Japan (hosted by Attack on Titan's Eren voice actor, Japanese game lineup) — one hour
    Two hours total

And the finale of the State of Play Japan livestream was Eren's voice actor interviewing Ai Fairouz

If Nintendo set a low bar, Sony just dug underground and crawled beneath it

    Background and Points of Debate

State of Play is a broadcast Sony holds regularly, and this installment was split into two parts — Western games and Japanese games — running roughly one hour and forty-five minutes combined. Opinions in the thread were divided: some felt the amount of information was on par with a typical episode, while others felt the only genuinely new announcement was the FF update, and the latter view appears to have been the more dominant take. Various reports have noted layoffs and canceled projects at Sony’s first-party studios in recent years, but whether that’s directly connected to this broadcast’s thin lineup remains speculation within the thread and shouldn’t be treated as established fact.

※This article is compiled and summarized from the 5ch (Hardware/Industry (Console Wars)) thread “Seriously, did State of Play really have zero highlights? Someone explain wwwwwwwwww.”

Konami’s Steam page for its newly announced RPG ‘Rev. NOiR’ has revealed the PC recommended specs: a Core i5-12500 CPU, an RTX 2060-class GPU, and over 100GB of required storage. Those numbers make a Switch 2 version look unrealistic, and the thread lit up with comments like “basically the same specs as a PS5” and “that’s mothership-Tales-level volume.” Opinions on the game’s chuunibyou (over-the-top edgy “main character syndrome”) aesthetic were split, with hype and harsh criticism mixed together.

    5AnonymousSep 4, 2026 03:18
That's exactly why "Barely-Enough-Storage Inc." [joking nickname for the storage-strapped Switch 2] can't release this. They're already twisting themselves into knots trying to force-port the FF7 Remake trilogy — which eats 100GB per entry — onto it, so their storage juggling is a mess as it is.
    6AnonymousSep 4, 2026 03:20
Yeah, there's no way this runs on Switch 2.
Still, the recommended specs are pretty steep even for PC.
    7AnonymousSep 4, 2026 03:20
Just going by file size, this could have roughly the same volume of content as a mainline ("mothership") Tales title

It's because Tales has just been cranking out remasters and hasn't put out a real new mainline entry in over five years.
The dark atmosphere feels similar to Symphonia or Abyss, so as long as they don't botch the release timing, it could pick up a decent chunk of pent-up demand from Tales fans.

    Re: #96
Since they can't release it on Switch 2, of course it ends up this demanding.
A minimum GPU spec of a 2060 is PS5-level, but if you count PCs weaker than that, it would actually still run on Switch 2.
If anything, there's even a chance they made it deliberately heavy on purpose, just for an excuse not to release it on Switch 2.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

While the Switch 2 does have more onboard storage than its predecessor, it still lags behind the PS5 and PC in GPU power and the cost of physical media, making ports of large-scale titles a tricky cost-benefit call. The recommended GPU in question here (RTX 2060-class) is actually a fairly standard bar for recent PC games, and a 100GB install size isn’t unusual for open-world RPGs either. In the thread, opinions split between those who took the large file size as a positive sign of a game made with real effort, and those who felt a sense of déjà vu about its chuunibyou-style world and character designs — anticipation and cynicism ran about neck and neck. The thread also drew attention for reasons beyond specs, with some users flagging issues around the portrayal in Rhapsody in Scarlet, another title Konami announced at the same time.

  • Xbox Cloud Gaming Slapped With a 15-Hour Monthly Cap — Go Over, Pay Extra

Xbox Cloud Gaming has introduced a new 15-hour monthly cap on cloud play — a perk Game Pass Ultimate members had previously been able to use with essentially no limit. Microsoft points to the difficulty of scaling up server capacity as the reason, and going over the cap now means paying extra. The original article was briefly pulled before being republished with an added explanation of the new pay-as-you-go option, and on 5ch that back-and-forth fueled both “isn’t this basically a retreat” takes and comparisons to PlayStation’s cloud service.

Glad I picked up my Series X for around 50,000 yen

    Background and key debates

Xbox Cloud Gaming had long been marketed on the fact that Game Pass Ultimate members could use it with essentially no limit. This change introduces a 15-hour monthly cap, citing the cost of scaling up server capacity, and any usage beyond that switches to a pay-as-you-go extra charge. The article the thread first cited was taken down and later replaced with a version that added details about the pay-as-you-go option — likely why early comments questioned whether the news was even real.

Opinions in the thread split over whether to read this as a simple cost adjustment or as an early sign of Microsoft pulling back from cloud gaming — and from the Xbox hardware business more broadly. Commenters pointed to PlayStation’s cloud/Portal business reportedly being profitable while Xbox’s isn’t, using that as a point of comparison.

One point of confusion for readers is the “30 minutes a day” framing — that’s simply the 15-hour monthly cap divided evenly across 30 days, not an officially stated daily limit. The exact per-hour price for overage usage also hadn’t been confirmed as of the thread’s latest posts.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Hardware/Industry (Geha)) thread “Xbox Cloud Gaming capped at 15 hours a month! You’ll only get 30 minutes of play a day.”

  • FF7R Revelation: Pay +¥1,430 and Play the Whole Trilogy

Square Enix has announced that pre-ordering “FF7 Revelation” — normally priced at ¥9,900 (tax included) — for an extra ¥1,430 (bringing the total to ¥11,330) gets you the entire trilogy. The previous two entries, “Remake” and “Rebirth,” become downloadable and playable as soon as you pre-order. On 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (“Geha”) board, the bonus itself was well received, but opinions split over concerns that Switch2 isn’t among the supported platforms, whether Switch2’s external storage (mostly 256GB models) could even hold all three games at once, and whether Revelation’s own ¥9,900 price tag is worth it.

“FFVII Revelation” is normally priced at ¥9,900 (tax included), but pre-ordering nets you the entire trilogy for just ¥1,430 more — a total of ¥11,330 (tax included).

The first two entries become downloadable and playable immediately after you pre-order.

    Re: #95
Playable from the moment you place the pre-order

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

“FF7 Revelation” is the final chapter of the trilogy that began with “Remake” in 2020 and continued with “Rebirth” in 2024, with a standalone price of ¥9,900 (tax included). This pre-order bonus lets players access the entire trilogy, including the first two games, for just ¥1,430 more, with the first two becoming playable immediately after pre-ordering if bought digitally. On the thread, while the bonus itself was received favorably, most of the doubts centered on the fact that only PS5, Xbox, and PC platforms are eligible, with Switch2 left out. This is likely due to the Switch2 versions of “Remake” and “Rebirth” having already been released this year, as well as a technical constraint: most Switch2 external storage cards top out at 256GB, which could be exceeded if all three games are installed at once. There was also persistent skepticism over whether the content justifies the ¥9,900 price tag, splitting the thread’s opinion between those welcoming the deal and those questioning the price and platform support.

Level-5 announced on its official X account that it will stream “LEVEL5 VISION 2026 II Dream” on YouTube starting at 9 PM (JST) on Thursday, September 10. The company has three titles slated for release by year’s end, but posters on the hardware/industry (Geha) board pointed out that 7 to 8 already-announced titles still have no release date, fueling speculation that the stream will focus more on follow-up updates and delay announcements than actual new information. Talk also centered on whether a Nintendo Direct might land the same day, on the nuance of the title “II Dream,” and on the fact that a similar stream called “Takumi” (“Craftsman”) was already held back in April.

We’ll be streaming “LEVEL5 VISION 2026 II Dream”

on YouTube starting at 21:00 on Thursday, September 10.

This event will feature the reveal of a variety of the latest updates on Level-5 titles.

'Dream,' huh… guess we'll be dreaming on yet another teaser with no release date in sight.
    5AnonymousSep 3, 2026 17:59
It'd be pretty bad if there's no Nintendo Direct despite the overseas price hikes.
Furukawa would seriously get called incompetent.
    7AnonymousSep 3, 2026 17:59
Guess there's no Nintendo Direct on the 10th after all…
Wasn't there something else going on that day too?
    8AnonymousSep 3, 2026 18:00
It's gonna be another delay festival, guaranteed — just sit down, Hino.
    10AnonymousSep 3, 2026 18:03
Nintendo Directs are always 10 or 11 PM anyway.
And lately they've been doing just fine without any Level-5 titles.
    11AnonymousSep 3, 2026 18:03
    Why hasn't Level-5 gone under?

    AI Overview

The main reason Level-5 hasn't gone under is the massive profits it built up from past hit IPs like Yo-kai Watch and Inazuma Eleven, combined with the flexible management structure that comes from being a privately held company.
    14AnonymousSep 3, 2026 18:05
Lol, they're acting all high and mighty banning mirrors/reuploads.
    15AnonymousSep 3, 2026 18:06
Good news — means I don't have to waste time on any Level-5 games.
    16AnonymousSep 3, 2026 18:06
L5's supposedly got 3 titles releasing this year — are they actually gonna make it?
    18AnonymousSep 3, 2026 18:07
So does that mean they didn't get invited to the Direct?
    19AnonymousSep 3, 2026 18:09
An announcement about a delay of a delay?
Just go out of business already, this 'it's totally coming!' act is the most annoying thing ever.
    20AnonymousSep 3, 2026 18:11
I want a Switch 2 edition of the last Musashi game.
    Also Yo-kai Watch 2: Shinuchi.
    21AnonymousSep 3, 2026 18:12
How many delay announcements versus how many actual new reveals are we getting here?
Is the pile of announced-but-unreleased titles just gonna grow even bigger?
    23AnonymousSep 3, 2026 18:12
    2026 II Dream

That title is way too lame.
What kind of taste is that?

    Re: #23
There's a saying, 'a dream within a dream' — meaning something hopelessly out of reach.
    It's basically unattainable.
So really they're already telling us it's getting delayed.
    24AnonymousSep 3, 2026 18:15
'Everything we've announced so far was just a dream!'

Are they seriously gonna try to write it all off like it never happened…
    25AnonymousSep 3, 2026 18:16
I'll laugh if they cram in yet another new announcement at this point.
    26AnonymousSep 3, 2026 18:16
Guess all those scattered announcements are finally taking shape.
    28AnonymousSep 3, 2026 18:18
Honestly I'm more curious about this than the State of Play.
    29AnonymousSep 3, 2026 18:18
Hurry up and remake Yo-kai Watch 2 already.
    Summer vacation's already over.
    30AnonymousSep 3, 2026 18:20
    Konami, Capcom, and now L5…
Are they even gonna do a Nintendo Direct at this rate?
    31AnonymousSep 3, 2026 18:20
Copy State of Play's format a bit too, instead of doing Direct-style shows all the time.
    54AnonymousSep 3, 2026 18:32
    Re: #31
It's this needlessly clever, borderline unreadable title — a pun mashing up the console name with 'PlayStation' and 'State of Play.'
    32AnonymousSep 3, 2026 18:20
'You can see me, right, nyan?' (a nod to Jibanyan's catchphrase and cat-speak from Yo-kai Watch)
    33AnonymousSep 3, 2026 18:21
Level-5, PlayStation, and Ubisoft all landing on the 10th like they coordinated it.
So the Nintendo Direct's probably the night of the 9th or early morning of the 10th.
    40AnonymousSep 3, 2026 18:25
Is there some licensed IP tie-in involved or something?
    49AnonymousSep 3, 2026 18:29

The Switch 2 version's pretty much confirmed already — maybe they'll do a cross-media announcement for Holy Horror Mansion or something?
    56AnonymousSep 3, 2026 18:33
Surely they'll at least drop a release date for Layton, right?
    65AnonymousSep 3, 2026 18:41
    Re: #56
Probably just an announcement that they'll announce the release date… eventually.
    61AnonymousSep 3, 2026 18:38
So you're saying there's no Level-5 title in the State of Play lineup?
    66AnonymousSep 3, 2026 18:45
    Re: #61
Deca-Polis might be there — it's the only one whose footage has shown PlayStation buttons.
    80AnonymousSep 3, 2026 18:54
Wait, is this actually the second one of these this year??
    85AnonymousSep 3, 2026 18:58
    Re: #80
Apparently they did 'LEVEL5 VISION 2026 Takumi' back in April.
    https://www.level5.co.jp/vision2026/

    Or so it seems.
    84AnonymousSep 3, 2026 18:55
Didn't even know they did that 'Takumi' thing in April.
They could've called out the delayed titles back then.
There are still 3 titles supposedly releasing this year!!
So yeah, I'm betting all 3 get delayed.
    86AnonymousSep 3, 2026 18:58
    Re: #84
Nice try, hater. If they release one title a month starting in October, they'd actually make it in time.
    87AnonymousSep 3, 2026 18:59
The fact that fans now want follow-up updates more than new reveals says it all — it's over.
    88AnonymousSep 3, 2026 19:01

Because all they ever do is announce stuff.
    92AnonymousSep 3, 2026 19:05
    Re: #87
They've got something like 7 or 8 titles that got announced but still have no release date, so of course it's come to this.
    91AnonymousSep 3, 2026 19:03
They might as well be banned from Nintendo Directs at this point — wouldn't change much from now anyway.
    94AnonymousSep 3, 2026 19:06
    Re: #91
Ban Bandai Namco if you want, but Level-5's putting out new Switch 2 titles, so…

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

Level-5 is a privately held company said to maintain its financial footing on profits from past hit IPs like Yo-kai Watch and Inazuma Eleven. In recent years it has kept rolling out new title announcements even as release timelines have increasingly slipped. As posters in the thread noted, a large number of announced titles still have no confirmed release date, and opinion was split on whether this stream would bring genuine new information or mainly serve as a venue for delay announcements on existing titles. Whether the timing overlaps with a Nintendo Direct or other companies’ events also drew attention, but as of September 10 no official announcement from Nintendo had been confirmed, so that remains speculation within the thread.

  • Sony’s “State of Play” Flops — Only 300K Concurrent Viewers, Panned Abroad Too

Sony’s new “State of Play” broadcast (nicknamed “Steple” by Japanese fans) aired, drawing criticism for its thin lineup and the almost total lack of buzz around the stream. Worldwide concurrent viewers topped out at roughly 300,000, and 5ch posters lined up to call it weaker than past editions of the show. Overseas outlet Eurogamer even wrote an article about how chaotic the stream’s chat got, making clear the tepid-to-hostile reaction wasn’t limited to Japan. What stood out most in the thread wasn’t the criticism itself, but posters’ unease that there wasn’t even enough energy left to properly dunk on it.

    1Anonymous GamerSep 4, 2026 00:31
    Sounds like an all-time low.
    2Anonymous GamerSep 4, 2026 00:31

With trash-tier concurrent viewers and trending numbers like that? 😂😂😂😂😂
    5Anonymous GamerSep 4, 2026 00:33
Honestly, I don't think it's even blowing up that much.
Like, it's not even reaching the level where that would happen.
That's actually pretty bad, for real.
    6Anonymous GamerSep 4, 2026 00:34
Wait, what was even the point of doing a State of Play this time?
    7Anonymous GamerSep 4, 2026 00:34
Worldwide concurrent viewers were only like 300K lmao
    8Anonymous GamerSep 4, 2026 00:35
Heard the content itself was pretty rough, but what's scarier is you guys aren't even hyping it up much.
Normally the haters would bring way more energy than this.

    Re: #8
Honestly, since this aired in prime time, I genuinely figured at least one streamer would do a watch-along.
But nobody did, and it really hit me how little interest there is. Felt kind of sorry for it, actually.
    9Anonymous GamerSep 4, 2026 00:35
Even in a trending list this quiet, 'Discard Play' couldn't take the top spot 🤣🌱*wheeze wheeze*

    Guess nobody really cares 🥹
    10Anonymous GamerSep 4, 2026 00:35
Keep doing shows like this every time and the audience is only going to shrink further lol
    11Anonymous GamerSep 4, 2026 00:35
Impressive that they aired it even though first-party had basically nothing ready.
Felt like it overlapped with the Vita's dying days.

    You get used to it.

Killing off discs is having a way bigger impact than expected.
    14Anonymous GamerSep 4, 2026 00:36
In a way, it didn't betray expectations at all!
    15Anonymous GamerSep 4, 2026 00:36
A funeral-quiet stream wouldn't surprise me, so why's the local (Japanese) version getting review-bombed too?
    16Anonymous GamerSep 4, 2026 00:36
Getting review-bombed at all means people still had expectations — cut it some slack.
    17Anonymous GamerSep 4, 2026 00:36
No 'Space Baldy' this time, lmao — guess they already knew viewership would be low.
    18Anonymous GamerSep 4, 2026 00:36
Just rounding up Japanese third-parties and calling it a day — that alone tells you how bad it is.
Part of it's the graphical baseline now being set by the Switch 2, but seriously — compare that Konami thing to the Switch 2's own showcase, it's rough.
    20Anonymous GamerSep 4, 2026 00:37
Making a whole thread over something as minor as burping after a Coke?
    24Anonymous GamerSep 4, 2026 00:38
Didn't watch it at all, but since there's no buzzing thread for any single title, I'm guessing there just wasn't anything worth talking about.
    26Anonymous GamerSep 4, 2026 00:38
The ending kind of felt like NHK's 'Game Genome' wrapping up…
    27Anonymous GamerSep 4, 2026 00:39
Sounds like it was chaotic enough that Eurogamer wrote an article about it.

    32Anonymous GamerSep 4, 2026 00:41

It was basically an act of hostility toward the viewers.
    90Anonymous GamerSep 4, 2026 01:01
    Re: #87
If there'd been any real surprises, dedicated threads would've popped up and blown up over them.
    Read between the lines.

    Background and key points

“State of Play” is Sony’s irregularly-scheduled showcase for new titles and DLC — essentially Sony’s answer to Nintendo Direct. What made this round notable was the reaction to the concurrent viewer count cited in the thread (roughly 300,000): a widespread sense that there wasn’t even enough energy left to properly tear it apart. Normally a show like this draws a storm of criticism, but this time the dominant reaction was that even the haters lacked momentum — producing two competing takes: one holding that “the truly alarming thing is the dead silence,” and another countering that “getting review-bombed at all is proof people still care.” There was also frustration that the back half of the broadcast was given over to DLC reveals and voice-actor interviews, echoing complaints about similar pacing in past editions of the show. The fact that overseas outlet Eurogamer wrote about the chaos in the stream’s chat suggests the lukewarm-to-hostile mood wasn’t confined to Japanese 5ch reactions — it extended to overseas communities as well.
