  • “Switch” Wording Vanishes From Next Nintendo Direct Announcement — 5ch: “This Was Always the Plan”

On September 4, Nintendo announced “Nintendo Direct 2026.9.9,” set to stream September 9 at 23:00 JST, but the program page’s description mentioned only “information on Nintendo Switch 2 software” — the words “Nintendo Switch,” previously listed alongside it, were nowhere to be found. On 5ch’s hardware/industry board, this shift sparked a wave of reactions along the lines of “so the old model is finally getting cut,” while other, cooler-headed posters countered with “this is neither bad news nor good news, just the expected course of things.” Opinions in the thread were split over just how far the transition to the Switch 2 has actually progressed.

The words “Nintendo Switch” have been dropped from the Nintendo Direct announcement, leaving only “Switch 2.” Is the original Switch’s treatment hitting a turning point?

On September 4, Nintendo announced that “Nintendo Direct 2026.9.9” would stream on September 9 at 23:00. The official site’s program page states, “We’ll bring you information on Nintendo Switch 2 software, centered on titles launching this winter” — and the original Nintendo Switch is notably absent from what’s being covered.

Apparently the PS5 is also dropping the disc drive entirely, by the way.

    Re: #16
Nintendo basically always cuts the previous generation once a new console launches.
Otherwise what's even the point of releasing a new console? Normally the first party drives adoption, and that's what draws third parties in, right?
PlayStation leaves it all to third parties, so once the exclusives dry up… yeah. And even those third parties' new releases haven't been selling well lately, though digital sale downloads seem to do okay.
    17AnonymousSep 5, 2026 23:22
Guess more games will keep migrating from the "trash can" (mocking nickname for PS5) over to Switch.
    18AnonymousSep 5, 2026 23:22
If it's a vertical multi-release across Switch and Switch 2 (same game, both generations), there's no contradiction, and that's probably what most games will do
Doesn't seem like Switch games are going away entirely.
    22AnonymousSep 5, 2026 23:25
    Re: #18
If that were the case they wouldn't have specifically written "Switch 2," so that's not it.

I thought Fate/EXTRA was Switch 2 exclusive, so I was a little surprised it's coming to Switch too
Maybe publishers aren't cutting Switch yet — or can't afford to, sales-wise.
    19AnonymousSep 5, 2026 23:23
Just Nintendo pulling its usual gatekeeping nonsense
There'll probably still be plenty of games releasing on the original Switch as normal.
    20AnonymousSep 5, 2026 23:24
Last fiscal year, the Switch versions of Rhythm Heaven and Tomodachi Collection really saved their earnings — are they sure it's okay to cut it now?
    23AnonymousSep 5, 2026 23:26
Switch is a hotbed for piracy (hacked consoles), so this checks out.
    24AnonymousSep 5, 2026 23:26
If they're still doing vertical multi-releases four or five years from now, that means the transition failed and consumers said no to it.
But of course that could never happen with Nintendo's wonderful hardware.

Users or publishers who still haven't bought a Switch 2 and are clinging to the original — I guess they just don't deserve Nintendo.

    27AnonymousSep 5, 2026 23:28
It's the expected direction, but they're probably not cutting it just yet.
    28AnonymousSep 5, 2026 23:29
The one getting cut is PlayStation, by its own third parties.

What's showing up in Famitsu's charts is probably just existing owners buying replacement units, not people with any intention of moving to the Switch 2.

The rumored Romancing SaGa 3 remake is also confirmed for the original Switch.
    35AnonymousSep 5, 2026 23:33
I mean, it'd be tough to take a game that started development for the Switch 2 and turn it into a vertical multi-release with the old Switch partway through.
    36AnonymousSep 5, 2026 23:34
There should still be plenty of software in development for the original Switch
    Unlike with PlayStation.

Vertical multi-releases across Switch/Switch 2, like SaGa 3 which leaked from the ratings board, are fine
It's Switch-only titles, like Powerful Pro Baseball, that are the problem, that's all.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

For Nintendo’s hybrid home/portable consoles, it’s typical for software support for the previous generation to continue for a while even after a successor launches — during the transition periods for both the 3DS and the Wii U, titles for the older hardware kept coming out in parallel. This Direct announcement simply indicates “the range of titles the program will cover”; it isn’t a declaration that releases for the original Switch are ending outright. In fact, the thread itself brought up original-Switch-compatible titles like the Romancing SaGa 3 remake and Fate/EXTRA, showing that third-party support is still a mixed bag at this stage. Where the thread split was over whether to read this wording change as “the starting gun for a completed transition” or merely “narrowing down what the show promotes” — a difference rooted in how far along people feel the Switch 2’s adoption actually is.

  • PS5 Pro Resale Price Hits ¥180,600 — Tops MSRP as Shortage Drags On

A thread reported that the buyback price for the PS5 Pro at used-goods chain Rudeya has climbed to ¥180,600 — far above its original retail price. On 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board, users debated what’s really behind the shortage and whether scalping is involved. The thread also cited Famitsu’s weekly sales data showing the PS5 Pro sold a mere 277 units in the most recent week, sparking discussion about the gap between such low official sales figures and the sky-high buyback price. Opinions split between those who think Sony is deliberately limiting production and those who suspect speculative buying is driving the frenzy, with the debate extending into just how many people are actually playing games on their PS5 Pro at all.

Selling at a loss means Sony bleeds money on every unit

Units get snapped up by Chinese buyers and never actually get used domestically
    On top of that
    Re: #65
    Re: #66
with that kind of speculative mindset, the real-world usage rate keeps dropping even further
Software publishers grow more suspicious of the gap between units sold and revenue, and more of them keep abandoning the platform

somehow all the supposedly 'dead' single-purchase Japanese games keep landing on the Switch 2 instead

    93AnonymousSep 5, 2026 14:59

Even people with zero interest in games are buying PS5s

Back when it was getting scalped before, even housewives who clearly don't play games were buying up PS5s like crazy

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

Since its 2024 launch, the PS5 Pro has had its price raised to ¥140,000, and posters in the thread suggest Sony is likely selling it at a loss (below cost). The ¥180,600 buyback price that sparked this discussion sits well above that retail price, apparently driven by shortages at physical stores and tightly limited production. Official data such as Famitsu’s weekly sales figures (277 PS5 Pro units sold, 368,932 cumulative) were cited alongside skepticism about how many units are actually in active use. The thread split between viewing this as “a genuine shortage driven by strong demand” versus “speculative price inflation involving scalpers and buyback shops,” with those in the latter camp questioning just how many people are actually playing games on the console. Worth noting: a buyback price exceeding the retail price is itself an unusual situation rarely seen in the ordinary consumer electronics market.

  • Switch 2’s US Amazon Purchase Count Plummets from 8,000 to 1,000 After Price Hike

5ch users noticed that Amazon US’s popularity indicator for the Nintendo Switch 2 — the “bought in the past week” figure — had plummeted from an initial 8,000 units down to just 1,000. Since the shift happened during the first real sales stretch after the price hike, some in the thread read it as a sign of slowing momentum, while others stayed optimistic, pointing to VGChartz’s weekly data showing the Switch 2 still outselling the PS5. Opinions split over which numbers to trust, and the debate spiraled into an argument over whether handhelds or home consoles should command the higher price.

    96AnonymousSep 5, 2026 19:49
The reason Switch 2's sales pace is currently outrunning PS5's really comes down to two things:

    – PS5 couldn't ship enough units at launch due to the chip shortage
    – Switch 2 rolled out a Mario Kart discount bundle limited to its first year on sale

I'd bet the pace flips back next year.

They just held back shipments on purpose to keep it looking scarce.

Background and key points of the debate

Amazon’s “bought in the past week” figure isn’t an official sales report — it’s an internal popularity metric that fluctuates day to day. The plunge from 8,000 to 1,000 is likely, at least in part, the tail end of last-minute buying before the price hike wearing off, a point some in the thread raised themselves. On the other hand, VGChartz — cited as a comparison — is also just an estimate of shipments and sell-through, not an official figure, and some commenters dismissed it as “VGChartz fortune-telling” given doubts about its accuracy. Neither number should be taken as a definitive picture of actual sales. The thread also veered into comparing handheld and home-console pricing directly, but it’s worth noting the two use different components and hardware generations, which limits how far a straight comparison can really go.

  • Nintendo Direct 9/9 Finale Predictions Heat Up on 5ch: “They’d Better Show 3D Mario This Time”

With a Nintendo Direct scheduled for September 9, 2026, a 5ch thread speculating about what title will close out the show — the “tori” (finale slot) — was buzzing. Past Directs have saved big reveals for last: Donkey Kong Bananza in April 2025, a new Fire Emblem that September, and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time in June 2026, and many users built their predictions on this “pattern.” The sticking point: since the day before is set to cover a Zelda 40th-anniversary retrospective, will they hold back a separate, brand-new Zelda title as the secret finale, or is a new 3D Mario — silent for nearly a decade now — the real favorite? Voices pushing for Pokémon or Smash, and skeptics questioning the leak reports, mixed into the debate as well.

Showing nothing but the logos for Metroid Prime 4 and Bayonetta 3 was a cheap move, not very Nintendo-like,

the Wii U had flopped hard, the 3DS wasn't doing great in the West, and the Switch had no backward compatibility with the previous generation, so they were right on the edge.
Nintendo today, with 160 million Switch 1 units out there generating royalty income basically on autopilot, has a completely different level of breathing room

Yeah, Nintendo totally pulls stuff like that

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

Nintendo has a track record of saving new-title reveals for the grand finale of its Directs, and the thread pointed to a pattern as evidence: Donkey Kong Bananza in April 2025, a new Fire Emblem in September 2025, and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time in June 2026. For the September 9 broadcast, opinion split on one key question — given that the previous day’s segment was set to cover the Zelda 40th anniversary (the movie and Ocarina of Time), what would headline the actual finale, separate from that main lineup? Several lines of reasoning came up: pent-up demand for 3D Mario (frustration that it’s been roughly nine years of silence since Odyssey), the theory that the Pokémon “Namikaze” reveal would get its own dedicated Direct, and the read that Smash Bros. is too soon to announce given how recently Kirby Air Riders launched. Some posts read deeply into the live-action Zelda movie’s release date shifting from March 2027 to May and then to April, tying it to the Direct’s structure — but these are all fan speculation built on circumstantial evidence, not official announcements or confirmed information. The “Mario” leak that surfaced also came with no substantiation, and it’s worth noting that skepticism about it showed up within the thread itself.

  • FF7’s Finale Runs Out of Room on Switch 2 — Get Ready to Pay Extra for a Special SD Card

The Switch 2 version of the final chapter in the FF7 Remake trilogy has sparked discussion on the hardware/industry (“gehaban”) board, after users pointed out that with only 256GB of internal storage, players will need to buy an additional “microSD Express” card — a special format that regular microSD cards can’t be used with — just to fit the game. The first two entries, Remake and Rebirth, already total around 90GB combined, and the finale alone is said to take up another roughly 130GB, meaning keeping all three installed at once could cost anywhere from a few thousand yen to nearly 30,000 yen just in SD cards. Some pushed back in the thread with comments like “just delete it after you beat it” and “the PS5 version eats up just as much space,” so opinions were split on how big a problem this really is.

Somebody's working hard on that negative campaign
Well, I'll just be buying it on Switch 2 as normal though

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The Switch 2 has 256GB of internal storage, and expansion is only supported through a dedicated microSD Express slot — the regular microSD cards used on previous Switch consoles won’t fit. SD Express itself is an industry-standard format set by the SD Association, not a proprietary Nintendo format, but compatible products are still low in supply and tend to carry a higher price tag. The prices cited in the thread — “around ¥9,000 for 256GB, around ¥29,000 for 512GB” — are rough real-world figures cited by thread participants, not an official guaranteed lowest price, so that should be kept in mind. There was also pushback along the lines of “just delete it after you finish it,” but that argument doesn’t really hold for users who want to play multiple titles in parallel, or who might want to go back and replay them later.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Hardware/Industry (“gehaban”)) thread “The newest FF7 title alone effectively costs over ¥19,000 on Switch 2 lololol“.

  • Was Monster Hunter Rise Bashed Too Much? 5ch: ‘Wilds Was Even Worse’

A thread on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (aka “Geha”) board debated whether Monster Hunter Rise deserved the harsh criticism it got at launch. There was general agreement on complaints like thin content volume, no true final boss, and dissatisfaction with the endgame mode Rampage (Hyakuryu Yakou) — but plenty of posters argued the later title Wilds was even worse, and that the Sunbreak expansion turned Rise’s reputation around. Others pushed back, citing the grindy “half-Rise” feel right after launch (a pun on Rise sounding like “raisu,” rice) and the gacha-like Qurious Crafting system, arguing problems lingered even in Sunbreak. The discussion ended up less about judging Rise on its own and more a full comparison across the series.

Not sure if "volume" is the right word, but since you basically never died, clear time was actually faster in Wilds — including cutscene skips.
    8AnonymousSep 5, 2026 18:19
Rise getting bashed is fair enough — weapon balance is a mess, and there's no true final boss. I get why Rampage, as the replacement for the old Siege events, is unpopular, but making it the endgame content is the real problem.

The combat's fun, the characters aren't grating, there's barely any of that cheap "gotcha" padding games use to fake difficulty, and the UI isn't bad either.

You had to sit around twiddling your thumbs for three months of drip-fed updates — that's what made it garbage "half-Rise."
    12AnonymousSep 5, 2026 18:26
That was about the standard you'd expect from Monster Hunter back then. Wilds just broke it even further.
    13AnonymousSep 5, 2026 18:26
You can call Rise trash all you want, but Wilds is the only one that got "Mixed" reviews on Steam, had its own main thread implode, and forced weapon-type threads to reset.
    14AnonymousSep 5, 2026 18:27
I dropped it right away so I wouldn't know, but did Sunbreak actually make things better?
    15AnonymousSep 5, 2026 18:28
The moment you have to bring up Wilds to defend it, that says it all.
    16AnonymousSep 5, 2026 18:28
Guess the finishing blow was the endless nerfs followed by Akuma (the Street Fighter crossover). They only teased Lagia's right leg and barely added real content — felt like they never intended to let people actually play.
    17AnonymousSep 5, 2026 18:28
It's not just Rise — fanboys of whatever platform doesn't get a Monster Hunter release will always bash it relentlessly and obsessively. Conclusion: Geha (console-war board) addicts are just unhinged. 😨
    18AnonymousSep 5, 2026 18:29
Rise didn't even have a true ending at first, and the thin content was a real complaint. Sunbreak made it way more fun though.
    19AnonymousSep 5, 2026 18:30
Rampage is a bad mode, and on top of that, locking the real final boss behind a future update is straight-up unfinished-game marketing — of course it got bashed.
    20AnonymousSep 5, 2026 18:31
Cutting Rampage entirely for Sunbreak was a bold call. I figured it was Rise's signature feature, so I assumed they'd just refine it and keep it going.
    22AnonymousSep 5, 2026 18:31
Guess this place is full of Wilds fanboys ("Hoiru") too. Feels like World, Rise, and the older titles are the only games left you can actually discuss seriously.
    23AnonymousSep 5, 2026 18:32
Wirebugs and Palamute mounts (Garuku) were just too good. And now Wilds goes and introduces some watered-down knockoff of Wirebug techniques, way too late.

Both of those are garbage mechanics anyway.
    29AnonymousSep 5, 2026 18:36

    36AnonymousSep 5, 2026 18:42
4, X, World, Rise, Wilds — every single one gets bashed for its bad parts. Stop pinning it all on fanboys.

Not sure if it was fanboys, but World showing damage numbers on-screen got absolutely torn apart back then, lol.
    41AnonymousSep 5, 2026 18:46
In both Rise and Sunbreak, having to go pick up those will-o'-the-wisp things (Spiribirds) one by one is a pain. And in multiplayer you feel bad spending too much time collecting them, so you barely get any.
    45AnonymousSep 5, 2026 18:47
    Re: #41
Well, they at least helped you memorize the maps, so you didn't really need to go collect them anyway.

Didn't they add an auto-pickup option for those?
    76AnonymousSep 5, 2026 19:17
Still, if they'd just stop shipping unfinished games that assume you'll grind to Master Rank, half the backlash would disappear.
    103AnonymousSep 5, 2026 20:49
    Re: #76
That's Producer Tsujimoto's policy, so it's a tough one to change. Tracing it back, it stems from World's clear rate being way too low — so starting with Rise, the base game got structured that way specifically to push players toward buying the expansion DLC.
    77AnonymousSep 5, 2026 19:19
Rise got forgiven because Sunbreak actually polished it up properly — not because Wilds flopped. Something like 4G still probably hasn't been forgiven to this day.
    80AnonymousSep 5, 2026 19:24
    Re: #77
Polished up by Sunbreak? There's still no forbidden/taboo monsters, leveling up Qurio rank is just as tedious as ever, broken buff skills wrecked the balance, and the absurd gacha system that is Qurious Crafting left time-attack rankings crawling with cheaters. It was such a bad game it stayed worse than World the whole time.

    88AnonymousSep 5, 2026 19:35
With Wilds, the dev side kept provoking players nonstop. For some reason, despite the garbage quality, they picked fights with total overconfidence — of course that blew up.
    97AnonymousSep 5, 2026 19:57
    Re: #88
This is the most decisive part: "ship garbage, then declare victory anyway." I think that's the common thread behind pretty much every major flame-war release lately, not just Wilds. That's exactly where the trust gap with Rise got too wide to close — Wilds kept making the worst possible move in its follow-up damage control.
    96AnonymousSep 5, 2026 19:51
Back in the 3DS era, even though people trashed the graphics nonstop, alternating base and "G" versions never really gave off a "thin content" impression.

Maybe it was just the times — hardly anyone compared each game to its predecessor back then.

Background and Key Points of the Debate

Monster Hunter Rise launched on Switch in 2021 and reached its fully polished form with the major 2022 expansion, Sunbreak. The thread’s main focus is looking back at how fair the harsh criticism at launch really was. The central target of complaints, Rampage (Hyakuryu Yakou), was the replacement for the series’ traditional large-scale Siege events, and the practice of holding the true final boss back for a post-launch update rather than shipping it at launch is a pattern that has repeated across the series, not something unique to Rise. In the thread, many argued Rise looks better in hindsight compared to the later title Wilds, which drew technical complaints despite the developers’ confident, combative public statements. At the same time, some pushed back, pointing to the gacha-like Qurious Crafting system and rampant cheating in time-attack rankings even in Sunbreak, arguing Rise “still hasn’t been forgiven” — leaving the debate without a clean, simple verdict.

※This article is compiled and summarized from the 5ch (Hardware/Industry, aka “Geha”) thread “The way Monster Hunter Rise got bashed was abnormal.”

  • Nintendo Direct vs. State of Play: Gap in Live Viewer Numbers Sparks Debate

A thread that began with a post comparing the domestic (Japan) concurrent viewer counts for Nintendo Direct and Sony’s State of Play. Commenters cited specific figures showing that State of Play’s (“SOP”) concurrent viewers dropped sharply from June to September — from 850,000 to 230,000 in the US and 210,000 to 34,000 in Europe — while Japan’s numbers actually grew, from 67,000 to 107,000. Some suggested this was due to Japan-specific special broadcasts. The discussion eventually escalated into a comparison war over worldwide cumulative sales of the Switch 2 and PS5 (roughly 22.55 million Switch 2 units vs. 17.09 million PS5 units at the 14-month mark) and the operating profit trends of Nintendo and Sony, turning into a prolonged back-and-forth between the same two posters, both liberally sprinkling their replies with “www” (Japanese internet shorthand for laughter, like “lol”).

    1AnonymousSep 5, 2026 16:14
If you ask me which one I'd want to break the news first, it's gotta be Nintendo Direct.
    5AnonymousSep 5, 2026 16:17
But the domestic viewer numbers are actually growing.

[SOP] State of Play concurrent viewers (June → September): US 850K→230K, Europe 210K→34K, Japan 67K→107K

Even the Japanese-language DE (Deluxe/Definitive Edition) alone probably sold more than 33K more copies than last time.

    24AnonymousSep 5, 2026 16:37
State of Play's lower concurrent viewer count probably isn't just about the gap in active users — it's likely also influenced by there being fewer viewers who are actually interested in new game titles.

Even a 10x difference in concurrent viewers doesn't show up in sales, so it's probably just that more people are watching it as entertainment. That's exactly why they have so few active users.

    Background and Key Points

Nintendo Direct and State of Play are the regular game-news livestreams put out by Nintendo and Sony respectively, and concurrent viewer counts are frequently used on the Console War board (“Geha”) as a yardstick for gauging viewer excitement. That said, it’s worth noting that concurrent viewers don’t necessarily correlate with active user numbers or sales performance — as some posters in the thread pointed out, it may simply reflect a larger audience watching purely as entertainment. Later in the thread, the comparison shifted to unit sales and operating profit, including a claim that Nintendo’s profit figures include revenue from the Pokémon Center, USJ (Universal Studios Japan), and its movie business — but no source was provided to verify this, so it remains an unverified claim from an anonymous message board. The prolonged back-and-forth between the same two posters is also a fairly typical sight on the Geha board.

*This article is compiled and summarized from the 5ch (Hardware/Industry (Geha)) thread “Nintendo Direct ‘Domestic concurrent viewers 800K-1M’ vs. State of Play ‘Domestic concurrent viewers 80K-100K’ — look at this.”

  • Yoshiyuki Tomino’s “Games Are Evil” Remark Draws a Wave of Pushback — 5ch: “Creating Gundam Ranks Among Humanity’s Worst Sins”

A thread appeared on the Hardware/Industry (“Geha”) board introducing a remark reportedly made in 2009 by Yoshiyuki Tomino, the creator of Gundam: “Games are evil. They’re a waste of energy, they destroy the environment, and they only drag down humanity’s productivity.” Since this coincided with the announcement of a new Gundam game, some pointed out the apparent contradiction — why is he fine with his own creation being turned into games? Others corrected the record, noting that Tomino doesn’t actually hold the rights to Gundam game adaptations and only appears in the credits thanks to his moral rights as the original creator. From there, the discussion broadened into a general debate over whether all entertainment shares the same structure.

    1AnonymousSep 5, 2026 15:33
To me, games are evil. Because it's not an activity that supports daily life.
And games using today's electronic tools are just burning energy — once you're talking about selling hardware to tens of millions, hundreds of millions, even a billion people,
the act of selling the hardware itself is evil. There's nothing eco about it at all.
    3AnonymousSep 5, 2026 15:35

Tomino's remark was made in 2009, so time-wise it's clearly aimed at the Wii/DS era.
Nintendo was touting "expanding the gaming population," but from Tomino's point of view, Nintendo let marketing lead instead of making games that actually entertain people.
Sure enough, games made in that era got remade for Switch and players turned their backs on them.

Hideo Kojima made a similarly sharp criticism, calling it "a crisis of creativity."

He's saying this assuming industry people will read his piece
so basically he's only talking to creators, not players.

Industry people mock this content too —
there are several serious flaws in it,
    the biggest being:
"At the end of the day it's just hardware getting more powerful — show me a game that's actually fundamentally new."

By that logic you could say anything: "every story is just a rehash of myths written thousands of years ago,"
or "there's no such thing as a fundamentally new human being, so humanity should just go extinct."
And of course, by that same standard, this old man making anime is completely pointless too.

Tomino's someone who got knocked around in the rough-and-tumble Showa-era production world, so there's a lot of force behind how he talks —
maybe he needs someone to soften things before they come out.

Even by Showa-era standards, Great Master Baldy [Tomino] is a pretty eccentric guy.

    Background and Key Points

The remark is said to have been made in 2009, and some in the thread pointed out it was made at CEDEC (a conference for game developers). There are mainly two points of contention. One is the apparent contradiction between denouncing games while the timing overlapped with the announcement of a new Gundam game. The other is the fact — corrected multiple times within the thread — that Tomino himself doesn’t hold the rights to Gundam’s anime or game adaptations, and only appears in the credits through his moral rights as the original creator. A point readers can easily misread is treating this remark as a simple “criticism of the game industry,” when the text alone doesn’t convey that Tomino made the comment while acknowledging his own anime work could be judged by that very same standard.

  • PS5’s Street Price Hits ¥55,000, Stunning Ordinary Shoppers — 5ch: ‘I Was Picturing ¥50,000-80,000’

The fact that the PS5’s street price has dropped to ¥55,000 became a hot topic on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board. The thread was started by someone who tried to buy a PS5 for GTA6, originally expecting to pay somewhere in the ¥50,000-80,000 range, only to be caught off guard once they learned the actual price. From there, the discussion spread — from how it stacks up against the Xbox X’s ¥120,000 price tag, to price gaps in the used buyback market, to sales comparisons with the Switch 2 — ranging from a simple mismatch in price perception to broader market trends. Optimists argued that sales would take off if more people simply knew the price, but skeptics pushed back by pointing to past companies that failed using that exact same logic, leaving opinions split.

Even if they put out games, some could still flop because of the hardware price, so things probably won't pick up for a while.
Same goes for Sony — SIE doesn't seem to want to put out a PS6 either, and PC graphics cards aren't advancing fast enough either.
    75AnonymousSep 5, 2026 13:57
The reason Switch 2 is struggling right now is the price.

If they don't cut it soon, this could get really bad.
Like I've said all along, that ¥50,000 mark is a huge hurdle.

Like I keep saying, the general public's awareness of PlayStation is now about on par with Xbox.
'On par' might be overstating it, but between Switch and Xbox, Xbox's buyer base is way closer to PS's.
It's a console that normal people never touch in the first place — made for self-styled core gamers, i.e. bitter middle-aged guys.
It's been like ten years since this became reality, yet it's baffling that people are still out here fighting an imaginary hardcore Nintendo fanboy in their heads (a '脳内ニシくん,' 5ch slang for a strawman Nintendo defender invoked in console-war arguments).

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The PS5’s (CFI-2000/2200 series) street price has fallen into the ¥50,000 range in recent years. The thread kicked off with a post saying ‘I tried to buy one for GTA6 and it turned out pricier than expected,’ but once posters learned the actual in-store price, the mood flipped to shock at how cheap it really is. The main point of contention was whether raising public awareness of this low price would actually boost sales — supporters said yes, while skeptics fired back that ‘it’ll sell once people know about it’ is the classic last words of companies that went under. A second thread of debate was the comparison with the Switch 2: some posters cited VGChartz’s estimated sales figures (note: third-party data, not an official manufacturer announcement) to argue the PS5 is outselling it, while others countered that the Switch 2 still holds the edge in domestic market share and retail buzz — meaning it doesn’t resolve into a simple winner. Buyback prices also stood out: only the Japan-only Digital Edition model comes in dramatically cheaper than the rest, and the price gap versus overseas models hints at demand from resellers and parallel exporters — though it’s worth noting this reflects buyback-shop pricing, not actual retail sales figures, a distinction that’s easy to conflate.

  • State of Play’s Interview Segment Draws Fire for Running Way Too Long

Sony’s ‘State of Play’ broadcast on September 5th (nicknamed ‘Sutepure’ by fans) drew a strong reaction on 5ch’s hardware/industry board (Gaming Hardware, aka ‘Geha’). The main points of contention were that the first and second halves repeated the same footage, and that the interview segments featuring voice actors ran long compared to the small number of titles actually showcased. Some posters even timed each segment down to the minute, and the thread also compared the show to next week’s Nintendo Direct (set for the 9th) and discussed the lineup of participating publishers like Bandai Namco and Konami.

    61AnonymousSep 5, 2026 11:24
    Re: #40
Gundam's total franchise revenue is in the same ballpark as Sanrio or the Shonen Jump properties, so the industry has propped it up as a counterweight to Nintendo/Pokémon among the older gamer crowd ('on-geezers'). This dates back to at least PS2's 'Federation vs. Zeon DX,' so it's deeply entrenched.

But that same history means younger generations have had far fewer chances to get into the Gundam IP for decades, and the fanbase keeps aging. The 40th anniversary was clearly more subdued than the 30th.
    45AnonymousSep 5, 2026 10:32
If you count the duplicated footage between the two halves, this thing runs over an hour.
Half of it was nothing, and the other half was just follow-up info on already-announced titles.
SIE apparently felt confident about this show, so there's a huge disconnect with what users actually wanted.

    Re: #49 Re: #52
I kind of think the individual publishers should've just prepared trailers that actually show off the gameplay themselves. Bandai Namco and Konami got long segments, so they definitely could have.

Ai Fairouz (a popular voice actress) can draw in fans from that side of the fandom, so if the goal was to pull in an audience beyond just gamers, having her on isn't really the problem. But if that's the plan, they should've properly advertised beforehand that there'd be an interview with her. The pre-show announcement didn't even mention Ai Fairouz — let alone 'Ghost of Yōtei: Complete Edition.'

Bandai Namco used to be the undisputed king of the anime/subculture licensing business, but ever since Sony Group restructured after its PS3-era slump and moved seriously into the licensing business, Sony's been steadily stealing that hegemony away. The dominant atmosphere from the old Bandai Visual days is a thing of the past now.

Sony also couldn't manage to absorb Nintendo's dominance by the DS era, so it went after the weaker target instead.

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

‘State of Play’ is Sony’s regularly-held in-house broadcast, often compared with Nintendo’s ‘Nintendo Direct,’ scheduled for September 9th. On the Gaming Hardware board, the density of new information relative to runtime is a perennial topic, and this time complaints centered on the structure of repeating the same trailer across the first and second halves, as well as the length of the voice-actor interview segment. Within the thread, some speculated this structure resulted from poor coordination between the overseas and Japan-specific broadcasts, while others criticized the lack of advance notice about the interview segment — leaving opinions split on whether this was simply a runtime-balance issue or a lack of preparation on the PR side. Note that the discussion around Bandai Namco’s Switch strategy is speculation based on the company’s past patterns, not an official statement.
