  • ‘FF7 Revelation’ PS5 Physical Edition Ships on Just One Disc—Unplayable Without an Extra Download

It’s been revealed that Square Enix’s “Final Fantasy VII Revelation” will ship its PS5 packaged edition on a single disc, and that playing the game will require downloading additional data. The previous title, “FF7 Rebirth,” shipped its PS5 version as a two-disc set (a Data Disc and a Play Disc), but this time the setup has changed—buying the physical disc alone won’t be enough to boot the game. Reactions in the thread were mixed: some pointed to the capacity limits of UHD Blu-ray as the reason, others suspected Square Enix secretly wants to phase out physical discs step by step, and others compared it to GTA6 and Switch 2 titles that also require mandatory downloads.

Square Enix’s “Final Fantasy VII Revelation” PS5 packaged edition will ship on a single disc, and playing the game will require downloading additional data. This is a change from the two-disc setup of the previous title, “Final Fantasy VII Rebirth”—this time, even buyers of the packaged edition won’t be able to play from the disc alone.

Square Enix’s official product page states that for the PS5 packaged edition, “an internet connection and download of additional data are required to play.” According to the overseas announcement, both the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions will ship on a single disc. The previous title’s (“Rebirth”) PS5 packaged edition was a two-disc set made up of a Data Disc and a Play Disc.

At that point, why not just ship it on a CD?

PS5 can't even read CDs anyway.
    Xbox Series X could, though.

    Re: #16
PS5 uses Ultra HD Blu-ray, so the max capacity per disc is 100GB.

    Re: #16
You could fit more if they added more recording layers.
    19AnonymousSep 5, 2026 09:56
So they weren't even allowed to do a two-disc set this time, huh.

    Re: #19
They say they'll keep releasing the physical version through January 2028, but honestly it feels like they want to end physical releases as soon as possible.
They'll probably keep a token amount going just to cover themselves, but at this rate it'll gradually become nothing but code-in-a-box.
    20AnonymousSep 5, 2026 09:56
Why would they even go with such an annoying setup?
    34AnonymousSep 5, 2026 10:01

I think making it a two-disc set is just too much of a hassle for them.
    36AnonymousSep 5, 2026 10:01
Maybe they went with one disc so Sony wouldn't 'Rebirth' it on them? (a pun—リバース, the Japanese title of the previous game "Rebirth," also just means "reverse/reject")

    Re: #36
Feels more like they got forced down to one disc, honestly.
It's not like the pressing mistake was even Square Enix's fault.

"No Disc, No Buy"—overseas fans are fine with mandatory downloads as long as there's a disc in the box.

    Re: #46
I think the real issue at stake is whether a PSN account is mandatory or not.

PlayStation is sold in 120+ countries, but you can only make a PSN account in fewer than 80 of them.
In countries where PS hardware is sold but you can't make a PSN account, there's no legitimate way to buy the download version.

For those 40-plus countries, it's basically the same as PlayStation hardware pulling out entirely.
Honestly, they might really fold up shop and withdraw from those markets for cost-cutting reasons.
    68AnonymousSep 5, 2026 10:23
    Re: #46
This is genuinely dumb, it's kind of funny.
Xbox's service that lets you convert a disc into a digital install also requires online authentication, which is just as far removed from actually owning something—yet people praise it anyway.
    47AnonymousSep 5, 2026 10:13
The Sony honeymoon ended after FF16, so maybe the two-disc pressing perk ended right along with it?

Guess the 'honey' relationship really is over too. (a pun on 蜜月/"honeymoon," which literally contains "honey"—蜂蜜)
    53AnonymousSep 5, 2026 10:16
If it's basically a key disc assuming a full install anyway, why not just ship a blank disc?
    60AnonymousSep 5, 2026 10:18
    Re: #53
Because depending on your connection, it can actually be faster than the disc.
    58AnonymousSep 5, 2026 10:17
It's already over BD's capacity limit—this is a full-on key disc at this point.

Someone just needs to invent a disc format with more capacity than BD.

    Re: #83
I doubt they'll actually need it, but pressing ends in 2027, so timing-wise they can't ramp up production later.
With the trilogy factor too, gauging yield (the so-called 'green tea' judgment call—5ch slang for a quality/inspection call) is pretty tricky, but I'd guess the first run is around 1 million copies.
    90AnonymousSep 5, 2026 10:42
Blu-ray only holds 100GB, so this kind of setup isn't rare anymore.
It's just that it's not really announced upfront, so a lot of people probably haven't even noticed.
I get why Sony might start thinking, 'well then, who even needs the disc anymore.'

    Why though?
The Switch 2 has 256GB of internal storage.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

The setup that became a talking point here—”a single disc plus mandatory additional download”—stems from the capacity limits of the UHD Blu-ray discs (max 100GB) used by the PS5. The previous title, “FF7 Rebirth,” secured enough capacity by splitting its PS5 packaged edition into a two-disc set (a Data Disc and a Play Disc), but this time, with the disc count cut to one, it appears most of the main game data will instead be supplied via download. Thread reactions split between those who felt that since it already exceeds BD’s capacity limit, this is effectively a “key disc” in all but name, and those who felt it’s nothing to be surprised about since many big-budget games these days require additional downloads even for their disc editions. Other points raised included the fact that the PS5 doesn’t support reading CDs, and that fewer countries allow PSN account creation than actually sell PS5 hardware—meaning that depending on internet access or account-registration eligibility, some players may simply be unable to play at all. Note that the information in this article draws on gaming-media reports, including an overseas announcement, so an official explanation of the specs for the Japanese market may still be issued separately.

  • Nintendo Direct Announcement Fails to Hit #1 on X Trends — Gaming Forum Digs Into Why

The announcement of Nintendo’s new-releases program “Nintendo Direct” failed to reach #1 on X’s trending topics, sparking discussion on the Geha board (5ch’s gaming hardware/industry forum). The previous two Nintendo Direct announcements reportedly hit #1, so this miss drew surprised reactions. Opinions split over the cause: some argued attention was split with the simultaneously announced “The Legend of Zelda” Direct, while others pointed to fading interest itself, as symbolized by reports of Switch 2 price cuts and fire-sale discounting. The debate escalated further when users brought out data comparing official X post engagement numbers to the previous year’s.

    Re: #109
    What a lame excuse

Background and Key Points of Debate

The announcement of a new Nintendo Direct had reportedly hit #1 on X’s trending topics for two consecutive prior occasions, so this time’s failure to do so was treated as an “anomaly” worth discussing. The debate centered on two main points: one camp argued attention was simply split with the “Legend of Zelda” Direct announced the same day, while the other argued the real issue was declining interest itself, as symbolized by reports of Switch 2 price cuts, fire-sale discounting, and sagging weekly sales figures. Some posts compared like and repost counts on the official X post to the equivalent announcement from the same period last year, but differences in follower count and impressions between the two periods make a simple comparison risky. It’s also worth noting that “#1 on trends” isn’t an official metric — it comes from unofficial rankings compiled by volunteer-run tracking sites, which is worth keeping in mind when reading the numbers.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Hardware/Industry (Geha)) thread “[Sad News] Nintendo Direct Announcement Ends Without Hitting #1 on X Trends“.

  • Foreigner: “Sony just lowered the bar for Nintendo Direct with the worst State of Play ever” → 300k likes

Sony’s game-news program “State of Play” got torn apart on an overseas forum, and the post ripping into it racked up 300,000 likes, turning it into a hot topic. Viewers repeatedly called out two things: the opening, which aired live-action movie footage with no warning and led some to mistake it for actual gameplay, and the sheer length of the developer and voice-actor interviews. Over on 5ch’s hardware/industry (“console war”) board, discussion turned to whether Nintendo’s upcoming “Nintendo Direct” — airing around the same time — would fall into the same trap, with opinions split especially over how it might handle movie-related info tied to Zelda’s 40th anniversary.

Thought there'd be something new, but it was just a recap

Background and key points of this discussion

“State of Play” is Sony’s irregularly scheduled broadcast for announcing PlayStation news, while “Nintendo Direct” is Nintendo’s equivalent program. What drew criticism this time was a segment structured to make viewers think they were watching gameplay footage, only for it to be revealed a while later as live-action movie footage (reportedly tied to Resident Evil) — a move many viewers saw as “dishonest.” Meanwhile, within the thread, some pointed out that Nintendo also inserts lengthy developer interview segments, so this isn’t simply a case of one show being categorically better than the other; the real point of contention was a difference in presentational honesty — namely, whether it’s made clear upfront that the footage is from a movie. The split opinions over featuring voice actors front and center also reflect differing viewer preferences on how these shows should be put together.

  • Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary Direct Set for 9/8, Regular Nintendo Direct Following on 9/9

Nintendo announced it will stream a Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary Nintendo Direct on September 8, followed by a regular Nintendo Direct the very next day, September 9. The announcement set off a flood of reactions on 5ch’s console/industry (“Geha”) board, with posters expressing shock at back-to-back Directs on consecutive days. Some noted that Sony’s State of Play the day before had underwhelmed, and many posts compared the timing to Nintendo’s announcement. The thread buzzed with speculation about what might be shown — including Ocarina of Time gameplay footage and news on the live-action film — but these remain fan hopes and guesses, not anything officially confirmed.

    Background and Key Points

Nintendo Direct is Nintendo’s regularly scheduled game-info broadcast; separately, the company sometimes holds standalone Directs focused on a single franchise. This time, an unusual schedule saw a standalone Direct for the Legend of Zelda’s 40th anniversary and a regular Nintendo Direct booked on two consecutive days. Sony’s State of Play, held the day before and heavily discussed in the thread, is a frequent point of comparison against Nintendo announcements on 5ch’s console/industry (“Geha”) board, and this time was no exception. That said, specific content floated in the thread — such as a sneak peek of the Ocarina of Time live-action film or a teaser for a new 3D Zelda game — is purely fan speculation and hope, not anything Nintendo has officially confirmed. Whether these hoped-for reveals actually happen won’t be known until the broadcasts air.

  • Dawnwalker Under Fire Over Blood Depictions — Dev Statement: ‘We’ve Begun Addressing It,’ Sparking Debate Over CERO

The official X account for the dark fantasy game “Dawnwalker” issued a statement titled “To Our Japanese Community,” announcing that it has begun addressing the content that had been criticized in the Japanese version, including adding other language options. The move appears to be a response to the growing backlash in Japan over the game’s blood depictions. In 5ch live discussion threads, users debated the legitimacy of changing content after it has already passed CERO review, explained that CERO isn’t a legal censorship body but rather an organization that provides industry self-regulation guidelines, and brought up past cases — like FF14 and the Atelier series — where a rating changed after release.

There are a few cases, few as they are, where the rating changed after release — FF14 changed on purpose (B→C→D), and Atelier changed after a slip-up (A→B) — so it's basically up to the publisher.

    53AnonymousSep 4, 2026 21:27
    Re: #49
    Exactly this.
CERO has no power to force overseas publishers to leave Japanese out of the international version.
If every Western developer just made that the norm, anyone who wants to play uncensored could simply make an overseas account and buy it there —
that would effectively neuter CERO entirely.
    55AnonymousSep 4, 2026 21:30
This has nothing to do with CERO.

    85AnonymousSep 4, 2026 22:42
Does everyone actually understand CERO's stance?
They don't 'impose restrictions' on a work themselves.
They just 'provide guidelines' for what content can go through distribution channels.
So according to CERO, the restriction itself is just the publisher 'self-regulating' based on those guidelines.
Their stance is: 'We (CERO) aren't the ones forcing the restrictions.'
Basically: 'If you're unhappy, feel free to strip out all the restrictions — we just won't be able to get it onto shelves, that's all.'
And since you can't sell without getting onto store shelves or storefronts, it's not viable as a business, so publishers end up having no choice but to follow the guidelines.

So the logic is: if you have complaints, take it up with the publisher, not CERO, since it's the publisher doing the self-regulating.
    92AnonymousSep 4, 2026 23:18
    Re: #85
CERO originally started as an internal division of CESA, and was spun off as an independent outside body once the public grew sensitive to games' potential effects on minors.
Game companies alone weren't seen as credible enough to fend off public criticism, so they brought in figures like a former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and educators from famous schools to boost their authority.

And CESA, as you probably know, is the symbol of the third-party publisher alliance from Japan's PlayStation golden age.
It's an organization publishers created to protect their own interests.

Since it's a regulatory body backed by CESA, which functioned as that third-party alliance's secretariat, almost every domestic game publisher is a member.
    94AnonymousSep 4, 2026 23:35
Isn't it just Steam that's getting the restrictions lifted?

    98AnonymousSep 4, 2026 23:52
    Re: #94
    Yeah, that's my guess too.

Background and Discussion Points on This Topic

CERO originally began as an internal division of the game publisher association CESA, and was later spun off as an independent third-party body in response to growing social criticism over the effects games might have on minors. It is not a legal body but an industry self-regulation organization — CERO itself doesn’t impose “restrictions”; rather, it sets guidelines for content that retailers and distributors will carry, and publishers adjust their content to fit those guidelines. In the thread, some questioned, “If content can be changed after review, what’s the point of the review?” — but there are precedents of ratings changing after release, as with FF14 and the Atelier series, and how a patch is handled is largely left to the publisher’s discretion. It’s an easy point to misunderstand that Dawnwalker’s PS version is still being sold under its original Z rating, meaning CERO’s review standards themselves haven’t actually been shaken. Some raised a political angle, suggesting the game is “on the LDP’s radar,” but this is speculation from some posters and hasn’t been backed up by any official statement or by those involved.

  • PS’s disc-elimination plan — 5ch: “Wasn’t DVD already fully cracked?”

A boycott movement dubbed “NO DISC NO BUY” has sprung up over PlayStation’s plan to drop discs from its next-generation console. As a countermeasure, a proposal surfaced on 5ch’s hardware/industry (Geha) board for a “key disc” scheme: keep the actual game data as a download, but burn just a cheap startup key onto a DVD for distribution. The thread split over whether this would really stop piracy given that DVDs are supposedly already fully cracked, and whether Sony actually wants to eliminate disc drives altogether — the debate never converged.

Sony used to press its own CDs/DVDs/BDs in-house. Going forward they're apparently dropping pressing altogether, so continuing would mean relying on outside contractors — and moving from in-house to outsourced naturally drives costs up.

You don't put the key on the disc — you put the lock on the disc. The server holds the key, and if it can open the lock on the disc's side, it releases the data. Since the key stays server-side, it can't leak unless the server itself gets hacked. Putting the key on the disc would be terrible security.
    81AnonymousSep 4, 2026 12:21
    Re: #80
So what does that mean? That a key DVD could actually be made pretty secure?

    Re: #80
But then that's just an annoying download version tied to your account, nothing more.
    96AnonymousSep 4, 2026 13:10
Actually, what Re: #80 is describing is the scheme Microsoft once proposed that SIE (Sony) killed. Buying a disc and booting it up links it to your account (you obtain a private key). Once linked, even if the disc is later sold used, nobody else can boot it.* The idea was for publishers to get a cut of the fee charged for issuing a new private key whenever a used disc changed hands.

*Each disc carries a unique serial number, and numbers already in use get rejected during server authentication. DVDs don't have this unique number, which is why the original proposal (Re: #1) would be hard to pull off.
    97AnonymousSep 4, 2026 13:12
Then why can Switch 2 do it?
    98AnonymousSep 4, 2026 13:14
    Re: #97
What do you think it can do? You can't even boot it without inserting the key card.

    Re: #97
Because, just like the name says, it's a card that literally holds the key.

Background and key points of this discussion

This debate is set against the backdrop of Sony reportedly scaling back its own disc-pressing operations, which would push outsourcing costs up. There were two main points of contention: (1) whether the disc material (DVD vs. BD) is actually tied to resistance against piracy, and (2) whether a scheme that hands over only startup rights — without the actual game data — would be accepted at all. In reality, for this kind of “key disc,” it’s the server-side authentication method, not the disc material, that determines security; a different material doesn’t directly translate into stronger or weaker copy protection. It’s also worth noting that Nintendo’s Switch 2 already uses “Game-Key Cards” that omit the game data for some titles, making this proposal a similar concept. As for the claim raised in the thread that “Sony once blocked a used-sales-linked authentication scheme proposed by Microsoft” — that’s one poster’s interpretation, not an officially confirmed account, so it should be taken with a grain of salt.

  • MS Adds Playtime Limits to Xbox Cloud Gaming — 5ch: “Gaming PC Owners Won’t Even Notice”

It’s come to light that Microsoft has placed a cap on usage time for “Xbox Cloud Gaming,” the cloud streaming feature of Xbox Game Pass, sparking discussion on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry board (Geha). Previously, subscribers could play without worrying about the clock, but the terms have reportedly been revised to impose a monthly usage limit. In the thread, some pointed out that this hits hardest for people relying solely on the cloud version via a Fire TV Stick or laptop, while those who already own a PC or Xbox console won’t be affected; others read it as a cost-cutting measure meant to avoid a price hike. The discussion also drew comparisons to usage limits on competing cloud services.

but the second Phil [Spencer] and Sarah Bond got pushed out and MS gave up on cloud, they started saying only PS fanboys use cloud gaming.
At the end of the day, these people just unconditionally agree with whatever MS leadership says at any given moment — there's no real thought behind any of it.

It was supposed to be a perk exclusive to Ultimate members, but letting PC and even Essential-tier members use it unlimited to begin with was just an insane policy.

Even when they raised the price, the pace of Game Pass additions didn't change — but if they'd lowered the price, the additions would've dropped for sure.
A downgrade doesn't make something else better; a downgrade just means the next downgrade is already lined up.
I know Xbox fanboys will lose it and scream "PS fanboy!" if I leave it at that, so I'll add:
PS Plus is the same story — raising the price didn't improve the lineup either, and in Japan you still can't play it on PC.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Xbox Cloud Gaming is a feature bundled with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, and its main selling point was letting people play without owning a console or gaming PC, streaming everything over the cloud instead. In the thread, it’s easy to miss that this new time limit applies only to cloud usage granted as a subscription perk — there’s no mention of it affecting cloud streaming of titles you’ve actually purchased (comments 10 and 12). It’s also worth noting that rival cloud services like NVIDIA’s GeForce Now already impose per-plan usage caps of their own (comments 70 and 73), so Xbox isn’t uniquely singling itself out with an unusual restriction. Opinions in the thread are split between reading this as an anti-abuse measure and as a cost-cutting move, and since Microsoft hasn’t offered a clear explanation, that’s something this article itself can’t confirm.

  • Switch 2’s Performance Officially Confirmed Lower Than Xbox Series S, Says Capcom

The thread kicked off after specific numbers surfaced for a certain ported title: 1080p/60fps on Xbox Series S versus 1080p/30fps on Switch 2, effectively making it Capcom’s own official acknowledgment that the Switch 2 comes out behind in performance. Pushback against those citing handheld constraints came quickly, with people pointing out that even TV mode (docked use) tops out at 30fps. From there, the discussion moved past a simple better-or-worse argument and escalated into a numbers-heavy showdown covering CPU and GPU generational gaps, how to weigh DLSS’s low-resolution upscaling, and estimates of real-world performance relative to the PS4. Whether it comes down to insufficient optimization or the hardware’s own limits was never settled.

FPS comes down to CPU power, you know.
    So all that trash-talk about GTA6 being 30FPS actually means it's a game Switch 2 flat-out can't run.

Both Dragon's Dogma 2 and Wilds are CPU-crushing games, so they'd need a full rebuild.

My guess is they'll rework things so even the XSS version comfortably hits 60fps, and then plan a Switch 2 version from there.
    35AnonymousSep 4, 2026 18:59
    Re: #34
For CPU-bound games, frame rate doesn't change between XSS and PS5 Pro. GTA6 is exactly that kind of title.
That just shows how strong the XSS's CPU is on its own.
Its GPU can actually be worse than the Switch 2's depending on conditions — that's where DLSS-style correction saves it.
    39AnonymousSep 4, 2026 19:11

If the weakest Xbox GPU is roughly a GTX 1060, the Switch 2 in TV mode is more like a GTX 1050 to 1050 Ti — only 50-60% the power.
It's just good at dressing itself up with DLSS, so it struggles in games that need real raw performance.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The Switch 2 runs an NVIDIA custom chip with an Arm Cortex-A78C-series CPU core and a DLSS-capable Ampere-generation GPU. There are cases where its raw computing power falls short of the Xbox Series S, and the thread saw an ongoing back-and-forth citing figures like CPU comparisons against the PS4 (roughly 3x) and differences in IPC. The debate largely splits into two points of contention. The first is whether DLSS upscaling from a lower resolution should count as “real” performance — some argued that counting it puts the Switch 2 ahead of the PS4, while others countered that even with DLSS factored in, its raw processing power still falls behind. The second is whether the issue lies in insufficient optimization on Capcom’s part or in the hardware’s inherent limits; commenters pointed to Onimusha running heavy while Pragmata ran well as a real-world example, suggesting the amount of work put into each title may also play a role. Some also pointed out that differences in TDP and design philosophy between handheld and home consoles make simple comparisons unreasonable to begin with — so before even getting to how big the performance gap is, the discussion often proceeded without agreement on what exactly was being compared.

  • State of Play viewership: US and Europe plummet, but Japan is the only region that grew — 5ch: “Why was Japan totally fine with this?”

Sony’s gaming news program “State of Play,” streamed in September, became a hot topic on 5ch after data showed peak concurrent viewers fell sharply in the US (from 850,000 down to 230,000) and in Europe (from 210,000 down to 34,000) compared to the previous broadcast in June — while Japan actually grew, from 67,000 to 107,000. All sorts of theories flew around about what caused the huge drop in the US and Europe, but plenty of replies also questioned why Japan alone didn’t lose viewers, and the thread was split over whether the broadcast time slot and the lineup of featured titles were really aimed at a Japanese audience.

Ugh, Japanese fans won't shut up about Nintendo Direct, so let's show them Sony's power by running State of Play in that same time slot
    62AnonymousSep 4, 2026 18:58
    Re: #61
    So, how'd that turn out?
    68AnonymousSep 4, 2026 18:59
Honestly might've been better to just give up on Japan entirely
    85AnonymousSep 4, 2026 19:02
By the way, isn't the console-wars board weirdly quiet for the day after a State of Play broadcast?
    107AnonymousSep 4, 2026 19:11
    Re: #85
Given how garbage the content was, there's a small chance the "perception management" shill squad is in an emergency meeting right now, figuring out how to spin it and quietly bury the "both console camps suck equally" narrative (a jab implying paid PR operatives steer console-war discourse)
    87AnonymousSep 4, 2026 19:04
Hey Nintendo Direct! If you've got the guts, try broadcasting on US time for once!
    93AnonymousSep 4, 2026 19:05
    Re: #87
    Even so, you'd still lose
    88AnonymousSep 4, 2026 19:04
This time the broadcast slot itself was clearly aimed at Japan
    92AnonymousSep 4, 2026 19:05
    Re: #88
Only the time slot was aimed at Japan —
the content wasn't aimed at anyone
    99AnonymousSep 4, 2026 19:07
"We'll be bringing you 'State of Play Japan.' We'll take a deep dive into
upcoming titles from Japanese and Asian game studios, with the latest
    gameplay footage and new information."

That's how it was hyped, promising fresh info on Chinese/Korean games too — and even the gacha-game fans aren't watching?
    101AnonymousSep 4, 2026 19:09
    Re: #99
And on top of that, the closing slot went to Ghost of Yōtei — a game made by an American studio, lol
    102AnonymousSep 4, 2026 19:09
Honestly felt like they only matched Japan's time slot because they had no games worth showing off
Aren't we just being used as a dumping ground?
    111AnonymousSep 4, 2026 19:12
    Re: #102
    Same here
They narrowly avoided having 800,000 people chanting "No Disc, No Buy" at them (backlash over discless console editions)
    123AnonymousSep 4, 2026 19:21
Sure, the time slot matched Nintendo Direct, but it didn't really feel all that aimed at Japanese viewers 🥺
    127AnonymousSep 4, 2026 19:23
    Re: #123
    Don't be unreasonable
90% of million-selling titles in Japan are Nintendo, and the rest is basically just Dragon Quest and Momotaro Dentetsu lol

There's no way something like that gets unveiled at a State of Play lol
    130AnonymousSep 4, 2026 19:25
    Re: #123
So who was it even for?
    137AnonymousSep 4, 2026 19:31
Supposedly over 7 million units sold, yet only 100,000 viewers
Even if just 10% tuned in that'd be 700,000 — so less than 2% watched?
Where did everyone else go? Is it actually selling that well?

Background and key points of this discussion

State of Play is a gaming news program Sony streams on an irregular schedule, and its concurrent-viewer counts are frequently compared with Nintendo’s “Nintendo Direct.” This time the broadcast was set for a Japanese weekday evening (10pm), a shift from the past pattern of prioritizing overseas time zones — but many of the featured titles still felt geared toward overseas audiences, so it’s hard to say the time change alone explains the jump in Japanese viewers. Some in the thread compared the concurrent-viewer count to console sales figures (over 7 million units) and argued that “way too few people are watching,” but it’s worth noting that live-stream viewers make up only a small slice of the overall user base, so comparing those two numbers directly can be misleading.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Hardware/Industry (Console Wars)) thread “[SOP] State of Play concurrent viewers (June→September): US 850k→230k, EU 210k→34k, Japan 67k→107k.”

  • Switch 2 Price Cuts Spread as Electronics Retailers Struggle to Clear Stock

On 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (“Geha”) board, discussion has heated up over price cuts on the Nintendo Switch 2 console. One post cited Edion’s inventory list showing “only 2 units sold in a week, 615 left,” while another reported that Yodobashi Camera’s third round of price cuts had brought the Splatoon bundle down to an effective price of around 1,600 yen. Commenters pointed out that electronics retailers are even absorbing credit card fees and shipping costs on top of the discounts, and some claimed the Switch 2 version of Elden Ring sold only 20,000 copies in its first week, fueling a heated debate over sales trends.

Apparently even Edion's stock isn't moving much

The scarier part is that fans who got hands-on with the Ocarina of Time remake are flooding in with disappointment (´・ω・`)

Previews of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Remake were held behind closed doors at Gamescom, on Monday and yesterday, for Nintendo Europe, Nintendo of America, and others.
The NDA lifts within 10 days.

But offline impressions have already leaked out ahead of time, and they're full of disappointment.
    Apparently it's just a simple 1.1-style remake, Star Fox-style.

    With Switch 2 it's always some excuse — "it's just a remake so it won't sell," "it's just a spin-off so it won't sell"…

Yodobashi.com really slashed it hard on this third markdown
Splatoon Raiders bundle at an effective 1,600 yen is honestly a pretty great deal

Probably better value buying it during a Rakuten Super Sale (Rakuten's periodic point-back shopping event)

Game console hardware is so low-margin that retailers can barely offer 1% in reward points on it
Even so, cutting the price this much AND eating the credit card fees and shipping means there's basically no profit left

Like Nightreign (Elden Ring Nightreign, the co-op spin-off)

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Game console hardware is a low-margin product for electronics retailers, and posters in the thread noted that margins are so thin stores can barely offer 1% in reward points — meaning that once you factor in these discounts plus absorbed credit card fees and shipping costs, there’s almost no profit left. That said, figures like inventory counts and weekly sales numbers come from screenshots of specific stores and secondhand information shared by thread participants, not official statistics released by Nintendo or software publishers, so some caution is warranted. Likewise, the hands-on impressions of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake are based on unconfirmed rumors said to have leaked before the NDA lifted, and their accuracy has not been established.
