  • Tell This to Your 2024 Self About 2026’s Gaming Consoles—They Won’t Believe You

A thread on 5ch’s “Hardware/Industry (Geha)” board asked what stories from today would sound unbelievable if told to your 2024 self. Nintendo’s new Switch 2 launched at ¥59,980, drawing comparisons to the Xbox Series S at ¥82,480 and the PS5 Digital Edition at ¥55,000. The PS5’s discontinued physical media production became a hot topic, and some posters noted that GTA6 actually came out in September 2026. While users piled on industry changes that would have seemed unimaginable two years ago, some in the thread took a cooler view, noting it was really just the usual console-war bickering dressed up as commentary.

    Background and Key Points

As post #83 notes, the president’s “apology over sales” wasn’t about poor performance — some replies clarify it actually referred to demand outstripping supply, so taking it at face value is easy to misread. The rumor about the PS5 dropping physical media also predates this thread; post #19 links to an earlier thread on the same topic. The Geha board is known for its distinctive console-war trash talk, but none of it is backed by official announcements or statistics — it’s all personal opinion and shouldn’t be taken as fact. Overall, the thread is less a market analysis than the usual round of hardware-versus-hardware sniping.

  • Zelda 40th Anniversary Direct Clocks In at About 30 Minutes — Fans Ask ‘Isn’t That Long?’

Nintendo announced it will stream “The Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary Direct 2026.9.8” starting at 11:00 PM on Tuesday, September 8, with a runtime of about 30 minutes. The stand-alone episode marks the franchise’s 40th anniversary and is expected to cover a range of series-related news. On 5ch’s hardware/industry (Geha) board, users compared it to the Mario 40th Anniversary Direct — which ran about 20 minutes for a similarly milestone occasion — sparking comments that 30 minutes seemed long for Zelda. Predictions were split over how much time would go to the Ocarina of Time remake and the live-action movie versus how the show would divide roles with the mainline Nintendo Direct scheduled for the following day.

We’ll be streaming “The Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary Direct 2026.9.8” starting at 11:00 PM (JST) on Tuesday, September 8.

To mark the series’ 40th anniversary, we’ll bring you a variety of information about The Legend of Zelda.

The broadcast will run about 30 minutes.

I bet the movie, Ocarina of Time, anniversary merch, and Nintendo Museum stuff alone eat up like 20 minutes.
Still, splitting it off from the main Direct means they don't have to cram it in there, so there's a point to doing it separately.
    6AnonymousSep 6, 2026 14:08
It'll be a total buzzkill if they spend several minutes on a movie I have zero interest in.

They haven't shown any actual gameplay footage of it yet.

Is there actually a leak on that?

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Nintendo announced it will stream a stand-alone “The Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary Direct” at 11:00 PM on September 8, with a runtime of about 30 minutes. A regular, general Nintendo Direct is also scheduled for the following day — splitting a franchise-specific anniversary segment from the main Direct is a format Nintendo has also used for Mario’s 35th and 40th anniversaries. Since the Mario 40th Anniversary Direct ran about 20 minutes, including a movie announcement and new game reveals, some in the thread compared the two and questioned whether 30 minutes was long for a 40th-anniversary special. Others argued it would make sense given a possible lineup of an Ocarina of Time remaster/remake, live-action movie content, and an anniversary retrospective video, so predictions about the breakdown were divided. As of September 6, Nintendo has not officially confirmed the specific content of the broadcast (including whether there will be new game announcements or which title the remake covers), so it’s worth noting that all runtime breakdowns and content predictions in this article are fan speculation, not confirmed information.

*This article is compiled and summarized from the 5ch Hardware/Industry (Geha) board thread “Zelda Direct: “Runtime is about 30 minutes” — isn’t that long??“

  • Should the Ocarina of Time Remake Go Open World? 5ch Is Torn

Fans on 5ch’s “Hardware & Industry” (Geha) board are debating the design direction for the upcoming remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

The thread’s original poster pointed to the rumored Final Fantasy VII Remake, arriving around the same time, which rebuilt the entire overworld map and even implemented the airship — arguing that if Ocarina of Time’s remake just polishes the graphics while keeping the old “zone-to-zone” area transitions, that would be “half-assed.”

Pushback came fast: some cited past titles that forced their way into open-world design and flopped, while others argued that Ocarina’s charm comes precisely from its enclosed, “garden-style” (hako-niwa) dungeon structure. Opinions split right down the middle over whether going open world is even the right call.

    1AnonymousSep 6, 2026 15:20
Square Enix rebuilt the world map it had given up on for years for the FF7 Remake, and even went so far as to implement the airship.
If Square Enix is going that hard, and Ocarina of Time's remake ends up just polishing the graphics a bit while keeping the same old zone-to-zone area transitions, that's honestly half-assed.
Stuff like that shouldn't get a pass.
    2AnonymousSep 6, 2026 15:21
What happens if it goes open world?

Will that alone make it more fun?!
    4AnonymousSep 6, 2026 15:24
Going open world makes it more fun.
That's just an established fact these days.

    7AnonymousSep 6, 2026 15:28
Why do I have to bow to some mediocre outside standard?
Back with A Link Between Worlds (Kamigami no Triforce 2), the answer was already given — you end up stuck building puzzles around dungeon-entrance item requirements and mural links, which makes for shallow puzzles and a more compact game overall.
    Open world is boring.
    12AnonymousSep 6, 2026 15:31

Though I really do want the dungeon layouts and puzzles changed, at least.

    Re: #34
Hard to tell if this is aimless drift from a team that actually understands brand management, or reckless behavior from one that doesn't understand it at all.
It's a situation where you can tell success or failure before the thing even ships — so can they even judge what's okay to change, what shouldn't be touched, and what they changed with real intent?
    40AnonymousSep 6, 2026 15:58
If they land on a good open-world idea, they'll just fold it into the next new mainline game.

It's the opposite. A game that's fun precisely because it's a garden-style, enclosed design just turns bland and generic once you make it open world.
The mindset that "everything should just be open world" is outdated.
Do you know how many games have flopped because of that?
    59AnonymousSep 6, 2026 16:09
    Re: #55
Third parties and Sony got played by that same argument over and over — that's exactly why they want to drag everyone else into the same mess.
    60AnonymousSep 6, 2026 16:11
Overseas markets just went through a console price hike — there's no way they'd ship a remake that's just a visual upgrade. Making that the centerpiece of the holiday lineup would be pure stupidity.
    68AnonymousSep 6, 2026 16:17
    Forgot to tag the reply.

    Re: #60
But this is Nintendo we're talking about — the same company that's recycled Star Fox 64 through Virtual Console and 3DS re-releases over and over, and would still smugly ship a "just improved the graphics" remake. If both titles are coming out this year, the projects probably kicked off around the same time, so I doubt they'd give a from-the-ground-up rebuild to only one of them.
    64AnonymousSep 6, 2026 16:14
Why not just keep the Ocarina of Time remake faithful to the original, and if they want to do open world, do it separately in the Breath of the Wild/Tears of the Kingdom style?
    67AnonymousSep 6, 2026 16:17
    Re: #64
It's the overall story arc that's the issue there.
As for a Majora's Mask remake as the "Ocarina of Time expansion," though — since the original was already open-world-ish, that one I'm genuinely looking forward to.

It's a garden-style (hako-niwa) game — you can't freely go anywhere, there are set routes, and the reachable area gradually expands, Metroidvania-style.

Momentum's already dropping because of the price hike, and if the remake's just a graphics change on top of that, it's basically throwing away the holiday season. If you want to play the original, you can already do that through the Switch Online expansion pack, so that covers it. Nintendo can do whatever it wants, but if it's just a graphics-only remake, I'm not buying it — and I'll mock it too.

I mean, haven't Zelda fans themselves already gotten tired of Nintendo's loose brand of open world after Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom? Whether it's the Ocarina remake or any new entry going forward, there are probably a fair number of people who'd rather have a dense, old-school Zelda experience than another open world.

Background and key points of the debate

Released for the N64 in 1996, Ocarina of Time is widely credited with establishing the grammar of the 3D action-adventure genre. Its structure links dungeons together across an overworld map — innovative for its era, but classified today as a “garden-style” (hako-niwa) design. Nintendo, meanwhile, has already established its own brand of free-roaming open-world design with Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, and several posters in the thread expressed outright fatigue with that approach. It’s also worth noting that whether the remake will actually go open world is not confirmed — the thread is largely speculation and wishful thinking, drawing a comparison to the FF7 Remake’s restructuring. The real point of contention was the broader question of whether going open world is a prerequisite for quality: some pointed to commercial disappointments like Dynasty Warriors 9 to argue that “open world” doesn’t automatically mean “fun,” while others countered that keeping the old garden-style structure would make the remake look like a lazy cash-in. The two sides never really met in the middle.

  • Etrian Odyssey I, II & III HD Remaster Hits ¥3,400 — Is Now the Time to Buy?

With Atlus’s dungeon RPG series “Etrian Odyssey” now available as an HD remaster (bundling I, II, and III) for just ¥3,400, a debate over the series’ merits broke out on 5ch’s hardware/industry (Geha) board. The DS and 3DS entries were known for their stylus-drawn maps, and the battle balance and directorial vision shifted with each new installment. Opinions in the thread ranged from “just play the first one” to “IV is the series’ finished form” and “III is the best pick if you want something playable on current hardware,” with posters also debating why the pace of new releases has slowed.

    3AnonymousSep 6, 2026 12:10
Isn't playing just Etrian Odyssey I enough?
Honestly, as a dungeon RPG it wasn't as good as people say.
It only got hyped up because it was a Nintendo exclusive.
    12AnonymousSep 6, 2026 12:20
Used copies were ¥2,980 at Geo, so brand new at this price seems fine.

    Re: #3
I think a lot of its praise comes from how well it used the dual screens and stylus, not just how fun the gameplay itself was. It wasn't unfairly hyped just because it was exclusive.
    46AnonymousSep 6, 2026 13:05
    Re: #3
I and II were still prioritizing ideas over polish, so they're not that fun. I played I, thought "eh, this is it?" and drifted away, but from IV onward it's been great.
    13AnonymousSep 6, 2026 12:20
Etrian Odyssey is a game built specifically for the DS/3DS — about 80% of its appeal comes from drawing your own maps with the stylus on those dual-screen handhelds (´・ω・`) In a way it's an "experience" game.
Take that away and it becomes a pretty generic, unremarkable dungeon RPG.
    38AnonymousSep 6, 2026 12:51
    Re: #13
Nah, from III onward the turn-based combat is top-tier, so it doesn't become generic even without the map-drawing.
    17AnonymousSep 6, 2026 12:24
Etrian Odyssey and Atlus's other dungeon RPGs are basically educational tools where you get through by reading the map layout and picking the right class composition, so they're weak on the "get excited about finding unique gear" side that other DRPGs have.
    44AnonymousSep 6, 2026 13:00
    Re: #17
I get that. But I guess Atlus just doesn't want players muscling through with absurdly strong weapons — they get anxious if the player isn't suffering.
    18AnonymousSep 6, 2026 12:26
I actually love I. I'm the type who gets attached to raising fixed characters, so I never warmed up to II onward, where there are bosses that basically require a specific class with a specific skill or you're stuck.
    37AnonymousSep 6, 2026 12:46
    Re: #18
Wait, what? I is the game where you're stuck without a Medic, Protector, and either a Bard or "Kasume" (fan nickname for a job class). From III onward things got more flexible.
    20AnonymousSep 6, 2026 12:28
IV was Etrian Odyssey's finished form (´・ω・`) It even supported 3D stereoscopic display, you know? Stereoscopic 3D and dungeon RPGs are a perfect match.

Thinking back on it makes me want to play on 3DS again.
I like the Switch-era games too, but I loved the DS-era ones.
    21AnonymousSep 6, 2026 12:29
It's a game with a pretty tightly laid-out path where you enjoy fitting into exactly what the developers intended.

I often saw comments like "it lost its edge and became too mass-market, it doesn't feel like Etrian Odyssey anymore," so I think a lot of people just couldn't handle the design shift that came with the director change.

Needing a specific finishing move on a boss to get rare drop materials is part of why leveling classes is such a pain.
In the end you have to raise a character in every single class, which gets exhausting too.
Knowing Atlus these days, they'd probably just sell a grinding map as DLC.
    30AnonymousSep 6, 2026 12:34
    Re: #27
Back with Shin (New) II they already pulled the nonsense of "the map won't be complete unless you buy the DLC," though — apparently it got criticized so hard that they didn't do that again for V or X.

There's almost no hack-and-slash loot element, and outside of I — which has messy balance — the range of viable strategies is pretty narrow.
So much of the experience relied on the unique niche gimmick of drawing your own map with the stylus that, as a dungeon RPG proper…
    48AnonymousSep 6, 2026 13:07
II isn't really refined enough to call it a "fixed-up version" of I anyway.
The skill trees in this era are just a mess.
    Just play III.
    49AnonymousSep 6, 2026 13:10
    Re: #48
I actually thought II's game balance was worse than I's. IV is the easiest one to recommend overall, but among what's playable on current hardware it's III.
    55AnonymousSep 6, 2026 13:28
    Re: #48
II's balance is broken because enemy evasion and attack power are way too inflated. Damage-dealing classes like Swordsman or Gunner miss so often that Ranger and Dark Hunter actually deal more damage. And enemy attack power is so inflated that wasting a slot on defense makes wipes more likely, so putting a Protector or a pet in your party actually makes things less stable, not more.
    52AnonymousSep 6, 2026 13:14
Isn't this thread full of people bashing the series with opinions that reek of never having actually played it?
That line from Re: #33 about "the range of viable strategies being narrow outside of I" is something you'd never say if you'd actually played the series.

It's a precious item, and landing the finishing blow on the exact turn you use it is pretty hard. I wish they'd make it so the drop is guaranteed no matter when you finish the enemy off, or at least guarantee first-turn action.

Etrian Odyssey used to release fast once they had a template to work from, and it's been three years of silence since the remaster — so it's probably a sales issue.

    Re: #79
A big factor was that Atlus, known for being slow developers, could crank these out back-to-back by reusing the system. It's also how they managed to put out Persona Q.
    94AnonymousSep 6, 2026 16:56
    Re: #79
Well, it's less that Etrian Odyssey isn't profitable and more that Atlus just can't spare staff for a title that sells 100-150k copies. That used to be fine, but nowadays just recycling Persona sells 1-2 million copies every year. So it's cheap to make, but the time-efficiency is bad.
    82AnonymousSep 6, 2026 15:45
X clearly used assets that were probably originally meant for a New III, and the volume of content is obviously different too — you could kind of tell the direction had changed and this was meant to be a stopping point.

To begin with, the whole series started from map-drawing, so not being physically able to do that anymore is a huge, huge change no matter how you look at it.

    Re: #88
If you're going to say that, doesn't it mean nothing new will ever come out unless Nintendo releases a third DS-style dual-screen system?

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Etrian Odyssey is a series that began on the DS in 2007, selling itself on dual screens and stylus-drawn maps. In the 3DS entry “Etrian Odyssey 2 Untold: The Fafnir Knight,” part of the dungeon maps were sold as DLC, a decision that split opinion even at the time — the thread’s comment that “the map won’t be complete unless you buy the DLC” is believed to be referring to this. Meanwhile, on the topic of why new entries have become less frequent since the 2020s, posters offered a commercial theory: that with Persona alone projected to sell over a million copies a year just through repeated re-releases, Atlus can’t easily spare staff for a title like Etrian Odyssey that sells around 100,000 copies. It’s worth noting, though, that this isn’t something Atlus has officially stated — it’s purely speculation from 5ch.

  • Next Nintendo Direct’s Big Reveal: Genshin Impact? Fans Buzz About a Possible Switch 2 Version

Ahead of Nintendo’s next Direct presentation (“Nindai”), speculation has spread across 5channel’s hardware/industry board (Geha) that the hit free-to-play game Genshin Impact will finally be announced for Switch 2. A Switch version of Genshin Impact was officially teased back in January 2020, but years have passed with no concrete follow-up since. The thread saw a split between users who think Nintendo is being cautious about approving character gacha monetization, and those who argue there’s no issue since other free-to-play titles are already available on the platform. Background and Key Points of This Discussion

In January 2020, Nintendo’s official site teased a Switch version of Genshin Impact, but there’s been no word since — fueling both hope that “it’s finally happening” and skepticism that “it’ll be a letdown again.” The thread mainly split over two points. One is the view that Nintendo is cautious about approving free-to-play titles that include character gacha, though some pushed back citing other free-to-play games already available on the platform. The other is Switch 2’s storage capacity: some pointed out that Genshin Impact’s data, estimated at over 100GB, would strain the system, with jabs made comparing this to the price of Nintendo’s newly released microSD Express Card (512GB, 28,980 yen). It was also noted that as of September 2026, Genshin Impact is approaching its 6th anniversary of service, which some saw as a point in favor of an announcement being well-timed.

A thread appeared on 5ch’s “Hardware/Industry (Console War)” board floating a hypothetical Xbox reform plan: “cut Game Pass prices,” “bring back exclusive titles,” “end day-one Call of Duty releases,” and “introduce time limits on the cloud version.” Rather than debating the merits of the proposal itself, the thread spiraled into a battle over Xbox’s MAU (monthly active user) numbers, with posters citing strong earnings from Japanese publishers like Capcom, Square Enix, and Koei Tecmo to counter with “Japanese third-parties are thriving even without Game Pass” — a classic console-war slugfest.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Comparing MAU (monthly active users) figures is a classic case where numbers take on a life of their own once different counting methods are involved. The “over 500 million” figure for Xbox cited in the thread includes Windows and PC Game Pass users, so it rests on different assumptions than console-only usage figures. Meanwhile, the strong earnings from Capcom, Square Enix, and Koei Tecmo are all results each company has already reported for fiscal periods from March 2026 onward — but that alone doesn’t prove a causal link between having (or not having) Game Pass distribution and business performance. The thread’s real fault line is which factor to prioritize — “Japanese third-parties thriving independent of Game Pass” versus “the scale of Xbox’s ecosystem” — and it’s worth noting both sides are cherry-picking only the facts that support their argument.

※This article is compiled as an excerpt and summary of the 5ch (Hardware/Industry (Console War)) thread “Xbox Asha: “Cut Game Pass prices! Bring back exclusives! Drop CoD day-one! Time-limit the cloud version!”“

  • Xbox Officially Admits Profit Margins Are ‘1/3 to 1/10’ of Rivals, Game Pass Growth Stalls Too

In July 2026, Microsoft revealed in its official blog post “Resetting Xbox” that some of its gaming investments are losing 64 cents for every dollar spent, and that its profit margins remain at just one-third to one-tenth of those of its competitors. Even after launching its ninth-generation console, the installed base has kept shrinking, and while the company pinned its hopes on Game Pass and a multiplatform strategy, growth has fallen short of expectations. Following this announcement, users on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (“Geha”) board debated the causes behind sluggish console sales, whether Game Pass is actually profitable, and whether Xbox should bring back exclusive titles.

“We’ve also learned that we aren’t the best home for every type of studio. Typically, for every dollar Xbox invests, we lose 64 cents.”

“Right now, our business isn’t healthy. Our profit margins are only about a third to a tenth of what comparable platform and publishing businesses see.

With the launch of our ninth-generation console, our installed base shrank while our cost structure grew. In pursuit of growth, we bet on Game Pass, multiplatform releases, and a broader content portfolio.

    Re: #45
    Just 'continuing' isn't enough.
Xbox's packaged-game market is already wiped out, so they'd need to say they're doubling down on reviving it to win over the physical-media crowd.
As it stands, third parties tend to skip discs for download-only releases, retailers won't stock them, and even Microsoft's own titles ship as 'key discs' with no actual game data on them.
That's not going to convince the people shouting 'no disc, no buy.'
    46AnonymousSep 6, 2026 11:29
Bringing back exclusives is only natural. Game consoles are built on the back of exclusive titles. If you go multiplatform just to chase quick cash, the whole platform collapses. If they're giving up on exclusives, they might as well just pull out of hardware entirely (´・ω・`)

    48AnonymousSep 6, 2026 11:30
What makes this tricky is that leadership is genuinely reflecting on it
Microsoft as a whole makes something like 20 times Sony's profit, so they're not pulling out
They'll try everything to turn things around
bringing back software exclusives will be one of those moves

Then they should've just kept the console and services at launch prices instead of raising them. By that logic, since the group as a whole is profitable, it should've been fine.

What they're boosting is strictly the profit 'margin,' so of course actual revenue keeps tanking.
It's obvious that mass layoffs plus cutting the product lineup will improve the 'margin' in the short term.
All they care about is pushing through restructuring while they're still in charge, consequences be damned — classic doublespeak from a corporate axe-man.

    Re: #72

Obviously because the State of Play was garbage 😣

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

This admission comes from “Resetting Xbox,” a document Microsoft itself posted on its official site in July 2026, in which the company’s own leadership acknowledged the struggles of its hardware business. In the thread, opinions split between those who blamed the low profit margins on going multiplatform and raising Game Pass prices, and those who argued that Microsoft as a whole remains hugely profitable and has no reason to worry about pulling out. Some also pointed out that ‘profit margin’ can be improved simply through layoffs or a shrunken game lineup, sparking discussion about the danger of judging a business’s health by margin alone. While some users called for a return to exclusive titles, others noted that Xbox never really had many exclusives to begin with, leaving many skeptical that any turnaround plan would actually work.

  • High-accuracy leaker ‘malo’ hints new Smash Bros. is in development — 5ch: ‘A leaker with a track record’

On 5ch’s Hardware & Industry board (Gehazai), an anonymous poster known as “malo” — who appears only in YouTube comment sections — has stirred up discussion by hinting that a new “Super Smash Bros.” title is in development. Malo is said to be so credible that prominent leaker Nate reportedly checks malo’s posts before leaking anything himself, and this time the tip on a new entry came in the form of a rebuttal to rumors of a Switch 2 port of Smash Ultimate. Thread reactions mixed skepticism about the claim’s authenticity with excitement for a new installment, and the discussion later spiraled into arguments over Mario Kart World’s sales pace and comparisons of Switch 2 software sales performance.

Looking at this, Switch 2 really isn't even trying yet right now.
And yet it's already steamrolling the competition (a dig at PS5, mockingly called 'trash-tation').

Background and key points of this discussion

It’s worth noting that claims from so-called “leakers” have no verification beyond the poster’s own say-so. Only the supposedly correct predictions stand out, and posters in the thread themselves point out that missed predictions get deleted — meaning malo’s track record isn’t something a third party can actually verify. Nintendo has made no official announcement about this title, this post offers no more specificity than the single word “in development,” and the timing of any reveal at a future Nintendo Direct remains unknown. In the back half of the thread, the discussion drifted away from the new Smash entirely and turned into the usual Gehazai-board slap-fight over whether Switch 2 software sales have surpassed Switch-era records. Readers should keep in mind that this comparison is happening only a short time after the new hardware’s launch, and neither side’s argument rests on solid evidence.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Hardware & Industry / Gehazai) thread “[Good News] Hardcore leaker malo, who’s leaked everything about Nintendo lately, drops a new Smash Bros. leak — overseas fans in an uproar.”

  • Onimusha’s Switch 2 Version Runs at an Average 45fps — 5ch: “Wouldn’t a Locked 40fps Be Better?”

According to testing by a gaming media outlet, the PS5 version of Onimusha: Way of the Sword offers a choice between two display modes — “Quality Priority” and “Performance Priority” — with Performance Priority holding around 60fps. The Switch 2 version, by contrast, has only a single display mode, and with VSync disabled it maintains an average of around 45fps, with the outlet calling it comfortable to play even in handheld mode. The article sparked a back-and-forth on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (“Geha”) board between PS and Switch fans over the performance gap, pricing, and portability trade-offs between the PS5 and Switch 2 — before the thread veered off into the unrelated topic of GTA6’s frame rate issues.

The PS5 version comes with two display modes: “Quality Priority” and “Performance Priority.” Both let you uncap the frame rate, but even uncapped, they reportedly hover close to each mode’s target figure.

The Switch 2 version has only one selectable display mode. With VSync disabled, it runs at an average of 45fps, and the outlet rated it as especially comfortable to play in handheld mode.

In the actual footage, whether during combat or movement, the PS5’s Performance Priority mode holds around 60fps, while Quality Priority mode hovers around 35–40fps. The Switch 2 version can likewise be seen maintaining roughly 45fps overall.

There are reports that GTA6 doesn't just have blatant frame rate drops — it's also using heavy motion blur to mask the low frame rate

Because of that, cars next to you end up looking totally blurred out

If only the Switch 2 had DLSS3…
Then frame generation could've gotten most games up to 60fps
    That's the one disappointing part

But apparently the Stellar Blade devs managed to customize FSR3.1 for Switch 2, so hopefully that tech can help stabilize frame rates a bit more

But then again, Nishio (Switch fanboy) never actually buys anything

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Onimusha: Way of the Sword is Capcom’s new action title, releasing across multiple platforms including PS5 and Switch 2. What sparked discussion in this comparison was a spec difference: the PS5 version lets players switch between “Quality Priority” and “Performance Priority” modes, while the Switch 2 version is limited to a single display mode. On the thread, the conversation wasn’t so much about the raw performance gap itself as it was a mix of grievances over the two versions costing the same despite the handheld/console spec difference, tangled up with comparisons that dragged in the unrelated topic of GTA6’s frame rate issues. Worth noting — something that doesn’t come through in the quoted excerpts alone — is that GTA6 is a separate title with different conditions around motion blur and resolution, so straightforward numerical comparisons should be taken with a grain of salt.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Hardware/Industry [“Geha”]) thread “[Good News] Media: “Onimusha: Way of the Sword’s Switch 2 Version Runs at a Pretty Solid Average 45fps”.”

  • Switch 2 ‘Console + microSD Card Tops ¥100,000’ — 5ch Snarks: ‘Priced Like a Powerhouse, Performs Like… Well, Switch 2’

A thread on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board sparked debate over Switch 2, after posters pointed out that “despite being the weakest hardware this generation, the console plus a microSD card runs over ¥100,000.” The discussion centered on storage capacity: Switch 2’s usable space comes to roughly 230GB, far less than the PS5’s approximately 670GB, drawing a wave of complaints. While some titles — like the Final Fantasy VII Remake — need nearly the same amount of space on both consoles (around 90GB), others show a much bigger gap: Resident Evil takes up 75GB on PS5 but only 32GB on Switch 2. Opinions split between buyers who think the choice should come down to performance and value for money, and those who say it should be about which games you actually want to play.

    Re: #100
    I do own one

PS is such a hassle that mine's boxed up in storage lol

Background and Key Points of the Debate

Switch 2 ships with 256GB of internal storage, but once the system reserves its share, the usable capacity comes to roughly 230GB. That looks weak next to the PS5 (825GB-plus models), which offers an effective capacity of around 670GB, and the gap kept coming up again and again in the thread. That said, storage use for the same title can vary between platforms depending on compression methods and texture settings, so it’s not something that can be reduced to a simple number comparison. Performance and cost-effectiveness debates have long been a staple flashpoint on the Geha board, but real purchasing decisions usually hinge on “are the games I want to play on it,” so readers should be aware that the spec-war rhetoric and actual buying behavior often don’t line up.

*This article is compiled and summarized from the 5ch (Hardware/Industry, Geha) thread “Switch 2 ‘It’s the Weakest Hardware This Generation, Yet the Console Plus MicroSD Costs Over ¥100,000’.”
