  • PS5’s Onimusha: Way of the Sword Tops 1 Million Copies Sold on Launch Day

Capcom announced on its official X (formerly Twitter) account that Onimusha: Way of the Sword, released September 4, surpassed 1 million copies sold worldwide on its very first day. The game launched across PS5, Switch 2, and PC, and on 5ch this sparked the usual hardware-forum (“Gaha” board) debate over how including a Switch 2 version affects sales and perceived quality, on top of discussion of the game’s content like length and difficulty. Arguments over measured frame rates and sales comparisons with Resident Evil Requiem also drew skepticism about where the numbers were actually coming from.

🎉Congratulations! Onimusha: Way of the Sword tops 1 million copies on launch day 🎉

We’re thrilled that so many of you have been playing it! ✨

    Thank you all so much!

    Sorry, I genuinely don't get what's off-putting about it.
It's not some fake-Japanese face, it's properly Japanese, it's not ugly, and it's got this wild, rugged charm — honestly it might even be great.

For those who bought Onimusha, how's the length?
I'll pick it up if there's a decent amount of content.

The side quests are fun too, and you should carry over as much of your skills/gear as you can when the game lets you.
I collected all the butterfly-and-book collectibles and the fluffy critters, and by 35.2 hours I was just at the very start of my second playthrough (the point where you get the red outfit)

If the first run feels too hard you can lower the difficulty, and building up skills and charms makes it manageable.
The extra difficulty added for the second playthrough might be a bit rough though.
    But it's fun.
    12AnonymousSep 7, 2026 17:16
I said this during the Resident Evil thing too, but the theory some people push — that "putting a Switch 2 version into an AAA multiplatform release drags down total sales" — is now completely dead.
If it can run on Switch 2, they should absolutely put it out there.

    Re: #12
Of course. At a glance you can barely tell the difference anymore.

And people who buy based on their preferred hardware will buy it as long as it looks about the same at a glance.

As we saw with Resident Evil Requiem, Switch 2 sales are under 5% of the total — basically a rounding error.
There's even a chance it would've sold more if they'd skipped Switch 2 entirely lol

Capcom hasn't officially published exact platform-by-platform sales figures for Resident Evil Requiem, but the Switch 2 version is estimated to account for around 20% of worldwide sales, and it's been performing well, reaching new audiences.

    Re: #30
Just the fact that "a Nintendo platform is part of the multiplatform release"
is enough on its own to give a good number of users a negative impression of the game's quality.
The crowd saying "if it's also coming to Switch 2 the quality must be dumbed down, so I'll pass" vastly outnumbers actual Switch 2 buyers.
And to begin with, Switch 2 sales make up only 4.8% of total sales — lower than the Xbox Series share — which already proves it's a platform you could drop without any real problem.

Except those users apparently don't exist, since Requiem is outselling RE8, and Onimusha is selling well too.

The new Onimusha basically takes Sekiro's combat, makes it feel even more exhilarating, dials the difficulty down a notch (though it's still not easy), and makes it more cinematic.

    https://x.com/TRIPSTER0/status/2095609480209748172
Among console versions of Onimusha: Way of the Sword, the best is PS5 — the PS5 Pro gets a major frame rate boost and is the only version with ray tracing, taking it to a whole new level.

The Switch 2 version is confirmed to be the weakest, running at 30fps with generally lower texture quality across the board — honestly kind of a joke.

As you can see in the posted images, the Switch 2 version looks extremely blurry.

Skip the Switch 2 version and get it on literally any other platform. If you want the best version on console, get the PS5 version.

Guess you don't even need a PS5 anymore

Media: "Onimusha: Way of the Sword's Switch 2 version runs pretty decently, averaging 45fps"

The PS5 version offers two display modes, "Quality" and "Performance." Both let you uncap the frame rate, but even uncapped they reportedly hover close to each mode's target value.

The Switch 2 version only offers one display mode. With VSync disabled it averages 45fps, and reviewers say it's especially comfortable to play in handheld mode.

Looking at actual footage, whether in combat or while moving around, the PS5's Performance mode holds around 60fps and Quality mode around 35–40fps. The Switch 2 version, meanwhile, roughly maintains around 45fps.

    Background and Talking Points

Threads like this are a staple of the “Gaha” (hardware/industry) board, where debates keep recurring over how multiplatform releases affect sales and perceived quality. This time, citing Resident Evil Requiem, the figure “the Switch 2 version accounts for 20% of worldwide sales” circulated widely — but this isn’t an official figure, it’s an estimate of unclear origin, and even within the thread posters questioned whether “the source is an AI.” It’s a textbook example of a number taking on a life of its own without solid backing. By contrast, the frame rate comparison (PS5 Performance mode around 60fps, Quality mode 35–40fps, Switch 2 version around 45fps) comes from a hands-on verification article by the gaming outlet Gamespark, and those figures are based on actual measurements. It’s also worth noting, since it isn’t obvious from the article alone, that the “topped 1 million copies on launch day” claim itself comes from Capcom’s official X account, and no platform-by-platform breakdown has been disclosed.

*This article is compiled and summarized from the 5ch (Hardware/Industry (Gaha)) thread “PS5’s Onimusha: Way of the Sword tops 1 million on day one lmaooooo“.

  • Nintendo’s ‘¥300 Billion for Partnership Building’ Sparks Debate on 5ch Over What It Actually Means

During its November 2021 earnings briefing, Nintendo outlined an investment plan that included a line item for “up to ¥300 billion for partnership building,” and the interpretation of that phrase became a hot topic on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (“Geha”) board. The thread kicked off with the theory that it meant “buyout guarantee fees for third-party software,” but posters quickly pointed out that the source was actually a 2021 article focused mainly on the Nintendo Account. The real point of contention was the definition of Nintendo’s “customers” — end users or business partners — and the debate never reached a consensus.

    Re: #103
Nah, that's money earmarked for supply chain stuff.

Background and Key Points of This Debate

The term “partnership building costs” comes from an investment plan Nintendo announced on November 5, 2021, which allocated up to ¥100 billion to expanding its game development structure and up to ¥50 billion to non-gaming fields such as visual media — alongside up to ¥300 billion for building infrastructure for online services and physical-retail partnerships centered on the Nintendo Account. The thread started from the theory that this meant “buyout guarantee fees for third-party software,” but other posters pushed back, noting that the source was a 2021 article and that Nintendo’s own IR materials (November 2024 edition, page 51) list investment examples showing the spending is closer to store and in-store equipment investment. The sticking point was the definition of “customer”: whether it meant end users (Nintendo Account holders) or business partners like third-party publishers, and interpretations stayed split to the end. Since Nintendo hasn’t disclosed a breakdown, nothing rules out some of it going toward timed exclusives or sales guarantees either — so this isn’t a matter that can be settled definitively.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Hardware/Industry, “Geha”) thread “[Nintendo Fanboy Bad News] Isn’t Nintendo’s “¥300 Billion Partnership Building Cost” from the earnings report just a buyout guarantee?“.

  • Countless Nobunaga Games, Zero Genpei War Games: 5ch Asks “Is It Fun When You Know It Ends at Dan-no-ura?”

On 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyō G” board, a thread blew up discussing why there are countless games set in the Sengoku period but almost none covering the Genpei War (1180s). Posters pointed to reasons like the small scale of the conflict — only a few thousand warriors involved — the fact that the era’s equipment, such as ōyoroi armor and naginata, wasn’t suited to group combat, and the fact that everyone already knows the war ends at the Battle of Dan-no-ura. The discussion expanded to cover the gap in treatment between the Three Kingdoms era and the Chu-Han Contention (Xiang Yu vs. Liu Bang), as well as the scarcity of games set in Korean peninsula history, evolving into a broader debate about which parts of history lend themselves to becoming games.

The Genpei War probably didn't even have 10,000 troops total if you're unlucky.
It could've been something like 3,000 vs 1,000.
So a single mistake could flip the whole battle.
Great armor (ōyoroi) was also purpose-built defense against arrows.
And naginata are swung sideways rather than thrust, so they weren't suited for group combat.
That's why they seriously fought these dumb-sounding battles where warriors called out their names one by one before dueling.
Spears only started getting used in the Nanboku-chō period, by Kusunoki and Akamatsu.
Even then it was for urban street fighting, to trip up enemy horses.

For starters, it's just unfamiliar to Japanese audiences.
The periods that could work as material — the Korean Three Kingdoms era and the Imjin War — both involve Japan and China heavily, so it's hard to figure out how to shape them into a game.
And the Later Three Kingdoms period, which is self-contained within the peninsula, is kind of… underwhelming.

Strictly speaking, "Heike" and "Genji" don't necessarily refer to Kiyomori's or Yoshitomo's lineage specifically — they're terms for particular branches of the Taira and Minamoto clans.
It's just that those particular branches are so famous that "Heike" and "Genji" usually end up meaning those specific families.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The Genpei War was a civil war fought between the Taira and Minamoto clans in the 1180s, ultimately settled at the Battle of Dan-no-ura (1185). While Sengoku-era battles involved tens of thousands of troops, Genpei-era battles are believed to have involved only a few thousand, and equipment of the time, such as ōyoroi armor and naginata, was suited to individual combat, making it hard to depict large-scale group tactics in a game — a point raised repeatedly in the thread. That said, it’s worth noting that the famous episode of the Taira army fleeing in panic at the sound of startled waterfowl is largely a narrative element drawn from the Tale of the Heike, and its historical accuracy is disputed. The discussion also extended to Chinese historical material less well-known than the Three Kingdoms era (the Chu-Han Contention, the Sixteen Kingdoms period) and to Korean peninsula history, highlighting how much the audience’s or player’s existing background knowledge shapes which subjects get chosen for taiga dramas and history games.

  • Foreign Media Slams Switch 2’s ‘Stellar Blade’ for Blurry, Blocky Visuals

Overseas gaming outlet Shacknews published a hands-on review of the Switch 2 version of “Stellar Blade.” While elements on par with the PS5 version — such as the physics simulation on the character’s hair — have been preserved, the review points out that the resolution is low, the upscaler can’t keep up, and the result is a noticeably blocky image. In battle scenes especially, the game struggles to keep pace, and in handheld mode the roughness is even more pronounced due to the characteristics of the Switch 2’s LCD screen. On 5ch’s hardware/industry board, the report sparked debate over the validity of the optimization method and comparisons of sales figures with other platforms.

The Switch 2 version of “Stellar Blade” is, on paper, an impressive technical feat — but it comes with a big cost.

It’s commendable that it retains all the physics simulation found in other versions of the game, like Eve’s hair swaying and bouncing as she runs. However, it’s clearly running at a very low resolution, and the upscaler can’t keep up.

The result is a noticeably blocky, pixelated, unsightly mess. But it’s in the combat scenes where the whole experience really falls apart. The game moves far faster than its rendering pipeline can handle, so while it’s playable, the quality of the experience is significantly degraded — especially in handheld mode, where the Switch 2’s relatively cheap LCD screen makes the image quality even worse.

the least noticeable flaw was the latency. I don't know if the game

but I was able to land parries pretty much exactly when I wanted to.

back when this game came out on PS5, capture software couldn't even keep up during streams — action RPG streamers who'd never had lag or freezing issues before suddenly ran into them for the first time.
That's why some streamers lowered their stream quality, or pushed through anyway and ended up with noise or choppy frame rates.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

“Stellar Blade” originally launched as a PS5 exclusive before later getting a PC (Steam) release, and this Switch 2 port is an extension of that trajectory. The thread’s main point of contention was the legitimacy of the optimization method Shacknews reported — said to combine DLSS and FSR frame generation. Some argued a similar combination has long been tested on PC and deemed impractical due to latency and visual breakdown issues, while others suggested results could differ if a publisher built it specifically for dedicated hardware. The original article particularly flags the drop in image quality in handheld mode, which may be influenced by the characteristics of the Switch 2’s budget LCD screen — a different condition from docked mode. Many of the thread’s replies about sales figures were unsourced speculation, so all the numbers should be read as unconfirmed.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

PS+ Premium’s “Game Trial” lets members play the actual full retail game for a limited amount of time, and has been offered as something distinct from a free demo that anyone can play. It’s unusual for a release only about a month old to get this trial treatment, and that point drew notable surprise on the forum. Nintendo’s trial program, by contrast, is a free, time-limited event open to anyone, so the two systems differ in both membership requirements and scope — a simple comparison of which is “better” doesn’t really hold up. The sales figures for each title cited in the replies come from weekly store rankings and unofficial tallies, not confirmed numbers released by the publishers, so caution is warranted there. Whether poor PS5 sales are actually the reason behind the trial release is also just speculation from the thread — it hasn’t been officially stated as such.

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

This “announcement on an unbelievable scale” isn’t an official statement — it started as secondhand hearsay from an overseas personal account, with no comment from Sony itself. In the gaming industry, unverifiable leaks like this routinely swirl the day before a major showcase, and there’s a long history of “huge announcement” hype fizzling into a letdown, which is exactly the track record behind 5ch’s skepticism here. Posters also pointed to “State of Play,” Sony’s own showcase event mentioned in the thread, arguing it’s unlikely Sony would sit on news from its own event only to drop it to coincide with Nintendo’s showcase day instead — a key basis for the doubt. Note that the Nintendo Direct scheduled for the same day is a separate matter from Sony’s announcement and shouldn’t be confused with it.

  • Square Enix’s Hamaguchi: “Our Goal Is to Carry FF7 Into the Future”

At PAX West 2026 in Seattle, a developer panel for “Final Fantasy VII Revelation” took place. Director Naoki Hamaguchi and battle director Teruki Endo took the stage to unveil the combat styles of new party members Cid and Vincent, and spoke about the FF7 remake trilogy, saying “our goal is to carry this work into the future.” On 5ch, opinions were split over whether splitting the story into a trilogy makes sense, how high a barrier it creates for newcomers, and where the series goes from here.

What's the point of only carrying FF7 forward?
    4AnonymousSep 7, 2026 12:39
You let it become such a has-been that it can't even post sales numbers anymore, and now you're talking about 'the future'?
    6AnonymousSep 7, 2026 12:40
Working on FF7 has slowly turned Hamaguchi into a Square Enix drone too.
    7AnonymousSep 7, 2026 12:40
    We don't need remakes.
    Make a new game already.
    8AnonymousSep 7, 2026 12:41
So 'carrying it into the future' means FF17 will end up being a sequel to 7?
    72AnonymousSep 7, 2026 14:21
    Re: #1
Stuff like this is exactly why Square Enix itself might disappear.
The FF series is already washed up, and once Horii's gone from Dragon Quest, its fans will vanish too.

    Re: #8
    That's not what it means.
It means passing down what they consider their masterpiece, FF7, to future generations.
    9AnonymousSep 7, 2026 12:41
They had that as their stated goal while making it a PlayStation exclusive at launch?
    Are they okay?
    10AnonymousSep 7, 2026 12:41
The remake is obviously aimed at people who already played the original.
How exactly is that 'carrying it forward'?
    11AnonymousSep 7, 2026 12:41
Splitting it into a trilogy already makes it way harder to carry into the future.
You need real commitment just to play through it, so newcomers won't touch it.
    12AnonymousSep 7, 2026 12:42
By 'carry forward' they mean 'cash in,' basically (繋ぐ, "carry forward," doubles here as a jab at just milking the IP).
There's zero thought given to new players anywhere in this.
    13AnonymousSep 7, 2026 12:43
It only got hyped up because it was the first 3D entry — the content itself isn't that special.
    14AnonymousSep 7, 2026 12:44
If the goal was carrying it into the future, they should've made the remake one single game
and done any epilogue material as DLC, don't you think?
Splitting it into three and abandoning the people who bought it on PS4
    seems pretty messed up.
    15AnonymousSep 7, 2026 12:45
They already made the 'one game' version — it's called the remaster.
    16AnonymousSep 7, 2026 12:46
If you're gonna waste money on a dead franchise, make a new IP instead.
    20AnonymousSep 7, 2026 12:50
They finally drew their trump card and found out it had rusted through — just give up and toss the junk sword already.
    27AnonymousSep 7, 2026 12:59
    Re: #20
If it were just rusty that'd be one thing, but it's been split into three pieces on top of that…
    35AnonymousSep 7, 2026 13:08
For some reason they're talking like this was a success.
The only one you could actually call a success is the very first PS4 entry.
    42AnonymousSep 7, 2026 13:26
    Re: #35
The reason they force it to be treated as a success is
so they don't scare off new players or give the company an excuse to cancel the project.
    38AnonymousSep 7, 2026 13:09
They'll probably remake Dirge of Cerberus and Advent Children too, and those might outsell the main game.
After all, there are tons of people who love Kadaj and Vincent without even knowing the original.
    47AnonymousSep 7, 2026 13:39
    Re: #38
    That's guaranteed to flop.
    41AnonymousSep 7, 2026 13:23
I think it's rotten that Square Enix won't hold anyone accountable when FF7 Revelation is basically guaranteed to flop.
If they'd just made it one game across PS4/PS5 plus Steam, with a later Switch 2 port, it could've sold 5 million copies and kept the IP alive.
They've done real damage to the company.

And for a normal publicly traded company, not being able to cut Horii loose even though he hasn't put out a Dragon Quest in over 10 years is pretty messed up too.
    43AnonymousSep 7, 2026 13:29
    Re: #41
Releasing it as one game would blow up the dev time and budget to an insane degree, so it's just not feasible.
They need to split it up to recoup development costs along the way.

Overseas devs proved you can build a rock-solid indie market just by reworking old Japanese game design, so the whole 'Japan is a design galapagos' theory is dead.
Claiming you have to throw out old Japanese game design to have a future is just selling the country short.
    88AnonymousSep 7, 2026 14:57
    Re: #83
Overseas gamers caught on to that, so their playerbases can join in and help turn old things into something new for the future.

Japanese gamers, meanwhile, have stopped caring about any of that and only care whether they can see a new cute girl's thighs or panties,
which is how the market ended up like this.
    91AnonymousSep 7, 2026 15:00

Well, for FF17 they should just let Nomura have a reasonable amount of creative control.
People complained a lot about the designs, but it's still better than 16, which nobody even remembers.

    95AnonymousSep 7, 2026 15:04
Because the models were low-poly, manga-flavored character designs and dialogue felt natural (same goes for the pixel-art FFs).
But do that in photorealistic graphics and it suddenly reeks of otaku stuff.
The dev team never seemed to notice how off that feels.
    110AnonymousSep 7, 2026 15:21
    Re: #95
16 had that 'realistic-looking but anime-flavored' vibe going on.

Rebirth, on the other hand, goes so hard into jaw-droppingly goofy, over-the-top scenes that it's easier to overlook.
    103AnonymousSep 7, 2026 15:09
    Re: #98
    No, that's exactly what I meant —
16, which Nomura had nothing to do with, is the one nobody remembers.
    106AnonymousSep 7, 2026 15:14
    Re: #103
FF9, which Nomura had zero involvement in, still has plenty of strong, popular characters, so it's not really about Nomura one way or the other.

16 just had an incompetent team behind it, plain and simple.

    Background and Points of Debate

The FF7 remake trilogy began with “Remake” in 2020 and “Rebirth” in 2024, and now concludes with “Revelation.” The decision to split it up stems partly from the fact that combining a large-scale, fully-voiced, high-fidelity remake into a single game would balloon both development time and cost — a point some in the thread acknowledged. At the same time, many voiced concerns about how high a barrier this creates for newcomers unfamiliar with the original who’d have to play through an entire trilogy, and questioned whether enough consideration was given to PS4 owners being pushed to repurchase on new platforms. Official sales figures have been released for each installment, but the numbers vary, so it’s worth noting that characterizations like “flopped” in the thread are speculation rather than confirmed fact. The discussion also expanded into debates over character design and comparisons with “FF16,” suggesting opinions are split not just over sales but over the series’ entire approach to development.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

‘Fable’ is a highly open-ended action RPG series originally created by the UK’s Lionhead Studios, which became popular after its 2004 debut but had gone without a new entry for a long time. This new installment is being handled by Playground Games, the Xbox Game Studios subsidiary known for the racing series ‘Forza Horizon,’ making this notable as the studio’s first RPG. Thread reactions were split: some praised the feel of the combat and the graphical detail, while others pointed out the frame rate and repetitive combat system. It’s also a period when release-date jockeying among publishers is a hot topic due to ‘GTA6’s delay, so speculation about Fable’s launch window was rampant as well. The game is said to support Japanese subtitles, though it’s worth noting — a point easy to misunderstand — that content may vary by region due to ratings considerations.

  • “Is There Any Point to Zelda’s 40th Anniversary?” — 5ch Debate Erupts Comparing It to Mario’s 40th

A thread titled “Zelda’s 40th Anniversary — Is There Any Point to This?” went up on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry board (aka “Geha,” short for ゲームハード/game hardware), sparking a debate over Nintendo’s apparent plans for a Legend of Zelda 40th-anniversary push. The spark was a comparison to “Mario’s 40th,” which last year rolled out on a huge scale — a movie, a Nintendo Museum exhibit, a pro-baseball crossover, and more. Against the view that “anniversary campaigns for unpopular IPs are pointless,” other posters brought up counterexamples: the commemorative PS5 for PlayStation’s 30th anniversary (2024) and the Zelda-themed Game & Watch for Zelda’s 35th, both of which reportedly still have unsold new stock sitting around. As the thread went on, it drifted away from whether anniversary events matter at all and settled into a circular argument over one specific question: does an anniversary’s value depend entirely on how popular the IP is?

    1AnonymousSep 7, 2026 11:54
I mean, 'Nishi-kun' [note: Geha board slang/mocking nickname for Nintendo fanboys] didn't participate in ANY of the Mario 40th stuff at all, did he?

Two years ago they put out the PS5 for the 'PlayStation 30th Anniversary Collection,' and after that came anniversary merch like 'the Bible,' 'the sacred idol,' 'the God's shoes' [sarcastic nicknames for PS-branded 30th-anniversary goods] — was there any point to that? It's all still sitting unsold, too.

There's no such thing as 'newbie' or 'old-timer' about it.
It's fine if 'Breath of the Wild was fun' is as far as it goes for you.
It's also fine if Breath of the Wild gets you curious about the older games.

They can totally put out another Zelda Game & Watch [Nintendo's classic handheld toy line, periodically revived for anniversaries], I wouldn't complain.

Zelda 40th Anniversary Direct (my prediction):
    Intro — 3 min
    Movie — 8 min
    Universal Studios — 2 min
    Twilight Princess — 4 min
Ocarina of Time — 10 min
Limited edition console — 1 min
    New 2D title — 3 min
    Releases 2027

In human terms, it's like asking 'is there any point to birthdays?' or 'is there any point to weddings or funerals?'
Every civilization throughout human history has had similar rituals.
Not being able to intuitively grasp why that's necessary seems like a serious lack of social sense.
Though I get it if you're just asking rhetorically, to put the reasoning into words.

Re: #83 It's not that deep, honestly — it's just marketing convenience.
    'Half-anniversaries' are a good example.
At this point 'anniversary' is basically just a clearance-sale banner.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The Legend of Zelda first released in 1986, putting it right around its 40th anniversary in 2026. The thread’s point of comparison, “Mario’s 40th anniversary,” was a large-scale 2025 celebration with a movie, museum exhibits, and merchandise; “PlayStation’s 30th anniversary” refers to the real commemorative-design PS5 that shipped in 2024. The actual argument here isn’t really about whether anniversary events are worth doing in general — it boils down to one specific question: does the value of an anniversary campaign depend on whether the IP is popular? Skeptics point to leftover stock from the old Game & Watch and the anniversary PS5 as proof that “if the merch doesn’t sell out, it wasn’t worth it,” while defenders fire back with “show us the receipts” on actual sales, and the exchange never really resolves either way. Note: “Nishi-kun,” used throughout, is stock slang on the Geha board for Nintendo’s fanbase — board-specific ribbing, not an attack on any real individual. Separately, one string of replies that singled out and mocked a specific regular poster by name has been left out of this excerpt, since it has no bearing on the actual topic.

  • Switch 2 Sales Crash to 6,000 Units a Week in North America After Price Hike

Nintendo Switch 2 got a price hike in North America on September 1, 2026, and a post claiming its weekly sales immediately fell to roughly “6,000 units in a week” (based on overseas retailer bestseller rankings) became a hot topic on 5ch’s hardware/industry (“Geha”) board. The thread was split on whether this was just the comedown from pre-hike rush buying or the price hike itself biting into sales, and the discussion expanded into comparisons with PS5’s sales figures, the ranking of Nintendo/PlayStation/Xbox gift card sales, and predictions for Switch 2’s eventual lifetime sales (ranging from 80 million to over 100 million units).

Wait, Japan raised prices same-day. Why did overseas markets drag out such a long "grace period" before finally caving to the inevitable?
    26AnonymousSep 7, 2026 12:49
    Re: #21
Probably because, even before the price hike, they'd already been selling the Japanese-market version cheaper in Japan only.
    23AnonymousSep 7, 2026 12:49
What's everyone's final prediction for Switch 2's lifetime sales? I think it's touch-and-go whether it even reaches 80 million.
    31AnonymousSep 7, 2026 12:52
    Re: #23
Well, overseas it's still the cheapest console out there, so I think it clears 100 million. A $50 hike in North America probably won't affect final sales much.
    49AnonymousSep 7, 2026 12:58
    Re: #23
I think it hits 100 million. Whatever it loses in adoption speed, it makes up for with a longer sales run — it'll end up being a long-lived console and get there anyway.

More like "8 to 1 thanks to the rush buying right before the price hike," not really "before the price hike" in general.
    44AnonymousSep 7, 2026 12:55
Amazon has always skewed Switch and Walmart has skewed PlayStation, but if even Amazon's gap has narrowed this much, September's NPD numbers will probably flip outright. And it was already losing on revenue as of July.

    73AnonymousSep 7, 2026 13:20
Right now weekly sales in Japan are around 20,000, but figuring 30,000/week plus a holiday bump of +200,000, that's 1.64 million a year — over 9 years, plus what's already sold, domestic sales top 20 million. Since Switch 2's worldwide total is currently about 4x its Japan number, if it keeps that pace overseas, that's 80-90 million over 10 years.

    Re: #104
Wasn't July down 51% year-over-year? August probably looked a bit better from last-minute rush buying, but from September on… yikes.

Background and key points of this discussion

Switch 2 got a price change (increase) in North America on September 1, 2026, and this thread was sparked by a post claiming that weekly sales immediately after fell to roughly “6,000 units a week,” a figure back-calculated from some retailers’ bestseller rankings. As the body text notes, this is an estimate derived from partial retailer rankings, not an official tally like NPD’s. The thread was split between those who saw it as “the comedown after a temporary spike from pre-hike rush buying” and those who blamed the price hike itself for the slowdown. In comparisons with PS5, commenters pointed out that PS5 is already in its 6th-7th year (late in its console life cycle) while Switch 2 has only just entered its 2nd year — a difference in release timing worth keeping in mind, since a simple weekly-unit comparison alone can be misleading. The lifetime sales predictions floated in the thread (from 80 million to over 100 million units) are speculation from the discussion itself, not official figures from Nintendo.
