  • Are 2K Monitors Pointless? 5ch Erupts Over Resolution Debate

A thread titled “2K monitor users are idiots” appeared on the Hardware/Industry (“Geha”) board and grew into a broader debate over resolution and scaling methods. When it comes to PC monitors, “2K” isn’t an official standard — it’s a nickname that came to refer to 2560×1440 (QHD), sitting between Full HD (1920×1080) and 4K (3840×2160). In the thread, opinions clashed over whether integer-multiple scaling matters when displaying Full HD or 720p content on a 4K screen, and over how high a refresh rate humans can actually perceive. Some also argued for deliberately choosing FHD or smaller monitors for gaming, prioritizing response speed — splitting opinion between image quality and practicality.

Wait, does "2K" mean QHD or FHD?

    Re: #3
If you add the height's last few digits (the hundreds place and below) to the width number, you get a nice round number.

QHD comes out to 3000, so unofficially it's called "3K"

After 2K, go for 4K instead — the pixel counts work out to clean multiples
    10AnonymousSep 7, 2026 10:06
    Re: #7
On smartphones this has been the norm for about 15 years now, but with high pixel density, scaling gets applied regardless, so integer multiples don't really matter anymore.

It mattered up through 24-inch FHD monitors with a pixel pitch of about 0.25mm, but now the whole "dot-by-dot" obsession has lost most of its relevance
    12AnonymousSep 7, 2026 10:07
    Re: #10
That's exactly the point — when you scale it, the pixel count comes out to a clean multiple, that's why it's good

Let me ask you this instead — you don't know about Integer Scaling? lol
    21AnonymousSep 7, 2026 10:13
There are all kinds of scaling methods, you know
Intel was pushing hard on integer-multiple scaling a while back, though I haven't kept up lately
Even without a dedicated feature in the drivers, if the monitor itself supports it, you can get proper integer scaling regardless of pixel pitch using things like Db4D
The dual-mode panels around these days are pretty good too
    27AnonymousSep 7, 2026 10:16
    Re: #21
Messing with upscaling in retro hardware emulators really teaches you all sorts of algorithms
You probably end up knowing more than people who are heavy users of photo-retouching software
And preferences vary a lot too
    23AnonymousSep 7, 2026 10:14
Game shaders use advanced blending techniques (not anti-aliasing) to look as good as possible, and there's a scaling algorithm serving as the fallback for that — yet here are people worshipping "integer scaling is the ultimate truth" without ever actually looking at the real pixels. That's how dumb it is.
    28AnonymousSep 7, 2026 10:17
    Re: #23
Well, integer scaling is still better than non-integer scaling though
4K can display both FHD and 720p as clean integer multiples
Even with a mediocre scaler, that beats stretching FHD onto a QHD screen (assuming no GPU upscaling, obviously)
    30AnonymousSep 7, 2026 10:18
    Re: #23
    Not too bright, are you?

Consoles use 1440p as their source resolution because it scales well to 4K
    33AnonymousSep 7, 2026 10:20
Are there even any console titles that optimize their output specifically for WQHD? lol
    36AnonymousSep 7, 2026 10:23
    Re: #33
With consoles, even when it's rendering at QHD internally, it seems like it upscales to 4K first and then downscales back to QHD for HDMI output
So you don't get the benefit of native QHD rendering like you would on PC — kind of a waste

Was planning to enjoy my second playthrough with DLSS5 turned on,
but on the harder difficulty the fights get brutal right from the start, so I'm still running vanilla here

    Checked Frame Generation on/off too
Since this is a Capcom (written as "Capunko" — a jokey misspelling) RE Engine game, does a lower base fps actually tend to help with parry timing and stuff? lol

Background and Key Points of This Debate

The term “2K” originally comes from the film industry, where it refers to a resolution of roughly 2048×1080. Calling the common PC monitor resolution of 2560×1440 (WQHD/QHD) “2K” is really just a colloquialism. The thread’s central disagreement was over whether “integer-multiple scaling” — used when displaying Full HD or 720p content on a 4K screen — still matters for image quality today; some argued it’s an outdated concern given how fine the pixel pitch is on current displays, while others insisted it’s still important. On refresh rates, some cited NHK and Sony experiments as evidence that humans can perceive meaningful differences even beyond 240Hz, while others prioritized practical gaming performance, deliberately choosing FHD or smaller monitors for faster response times — a value system distinct from pure image-quality maximalism that’s easy to overlook in this debate.

  • “Games These Days Are Boring” — 5ch Users Line Up With Their Own Theories Why

A thread titled “Why are games these days boring?” popped up on 5ch’s Livegalileo (general live-commentary) board. Rather than turning into a simple gripe session, it produced a lineup of competing theories: one camp argued that the pursuit of player-friendliness — helpful navigation that always points you to your next objective, freely selectable difficulty settings — has stripped games of the unreasonable difficulty and stress that once made beating them feel satisfying; another camp blamed the players themselves, now grown into adults who can no longer shut out spoilers and information. Opinions split over whether Dragon Quest’s difficulty-selection feature is a good thing or a bad thing, with some pushing back that it was players themselves who demanded these convenience features in the first place — turning the discussion into something more nuanced than a simple “the game industry has gone downhill” narrative.

Even Relink, which I brought up as a fun example, is a hack-and-slash where the path to getting stronger is completely fixed. 70AnonymousSep 7, 2026 10:41
    Because it's too comfortable.

Humans actually get more pleasure when there's a "moderate" amount of stress involved. In today's RPGs, for instance, you don't get the hassle (stress) of not knowing what to do next and having to go around talking to townspeople for clues — the game just hands you a hint telling you where to go and what to do. That comfort is exactly what's killing the fun and the sense of pleasure. Unreasonable difficulty and stress are actually a key ingredient of enjoyment.

Games these days have a decent amount of content, so clearing one takes several days — which means with a brand-new release, information inevitably leaks in whether you want it to or not. You have to be prepared to actively cut yourself off from outside information.

    Re: #95
Making a brand-new original game is basically a gamble in itself these days.

Background and Key Points of the Debate

The theories raised in the thread broadly split into two camps. The first is the “comfort is to blame” theory — the argument that player-friendly design, such as systems that always tell you what to do next and freely selectable difficulty settings, has robbed games of the old sense of accomplishment that came bundled with stress and unreasonable difficulty (>>70). The second is the “the players have changed” theory, which points to the fact that players have grown into adults who can no longer block out information, and that it’s harder to recapture the fresh sense of wonder they felt as kids (>>13). As with Dragon Quest’s difficulty-selection feature, opinions were also split on whether convenience features themselves are a good thing at all (>>93, >>96), and some pointed to the industry’s current state, where talent drain among developers and the fact that greenlighting a brand-new title has become a “gamble” (>>107). At the same time, others noted that it was users themselves who relentlessly criticized inconvenient features until they got removed (>>41) — worth keeping in mind, since this isn’t a debate that a simple “things were better in the old days” generational narrative can settle.

  • State of Play View Count Controversy: From 100K Right After Airing to Nearly 800K in Two Days

On 5ch’s Hardware/Industry board (Geha), a thread blew up over the view count for PlayStation’s “State of Play (Japanese)” broadcast: it sat at around 100,000 views by 10pm on the day it aired, but climbed to nearly 800,000 in under two days. Posters pointed out that YouTube changed how it counts views around August 24, 2026, making it easier for even brief watches to register — but others noted a similar spike happened around the same time on the “PLAY!PLAY!PLAY!” show slot, splitting opinion on whether this is a site-wide YouTube change or padding by a specific channel.

Why does a broadcast that started at 10pm — prime time for Japanese viewers — cap out at only 100,000 views,

then explode to several times that in just two days…

    They’re 100% buying views…

It counts autoplays from 'Recommended' too now (the paid-placement kind where you pay YouTube to get featured).
YouTube's apparently been declining lately, so some say this is just padding numbers to impress advertisers.

For what it's worth, a higher view count doesn't change what YouTube actually pays the channel.

    >That said, this has no effect on revenue. Ad revenue calculations and eligibility for the YouTube Partner Program (YPP) still rely on 'engaged views' and engaged watch time — a metric counting views that lasted beyond the first few seconds, which is essentially how view counts used to be measured. This can be checked in YouTube Analytics' detailed mode.

Having practically identical average view counts across the board is basically a confession that something's being done.
If you're gonna do it, at least do it so it's not this obvious.
This is the kind of move that says you don't even care if you get caught.

Before, if you hit play, thought 'this sucks,' and hit back within a few seconds, it wouldn't count.
Now all of that just gets counted evenly as a view — that's all this is.

Under the current spec it's less a 'view count' and more just a page-view count.

    Background and Key Points

YouTube treats view counts as two separate metrics: “engaged views” (views watched for more than a few seconds), which is used to determine ad revenue and eligibility requirements, and the plain “view count” that’s simply displayed on screen. The spec change around August 24 that sparked this thread only made the latter, on-screen number easier to inflate — YouTube itself has stated that the standards for calculating revenue haven’t changed. In other words, even a sudden surge in views doesn’t mean more ad revenue for the creator; it only changes how things look to advertisers. What still stirred controversy was the observation that only videos tied to titles with poor domestic sales showed an unnaturally uniform pattern of view growth — a pattern the spec change alone doesn’t fully explain, keeping suspicion alive. Sony has history here too: its stealth-marketing tactics were called out in the past over the “David Manning affair,” in which it used quotes from a fabricated film critic in its ads, so this incident drew suspicion once again, even with the truth still unconfirmed.

  • Nintendo vs. PlayStation Stream Viewer Gap Reignites Market Share Debate — 5ch: ‘Concurrent Viewers Were the Answer All Along’

Nintendo’s new-releases showcase “Nintendo Direct” pulled in roughly 1 million concurrent viewers, while Sony’s “State of Play” topped out at just 50,000–100,000 — sparking a debate over game market share on 5ch’s hardware/industry board. Posters pushed back on the idea that concurrent viewer counts alone can settle the market-share question, citing other data instead: first-week sales comparisons for Elden Ring, a Tokyo Game Show attendee survey, and an age-bracket survey from marketing firm Cross Marketing. Opinions split over whether Nintendo really is the overwhelming majority, or whether the results just shift depending on how you measure them.

Well, for hardcore Nintendo-brand fans it's Nintendo first, Pokémon second, nothing in third or fourth place, and third parties a distant fifth — and even those third-party hits tend to be stuff like Power Pros or Momotaro Dentetsu.

Background and Key Points of This Debate

“Concurrent viewer count” simply measures how many people tuned in to a broadcast — it doesn’t directly translate into unit sales or the number of hardware owners. Domestic game sales are usually gauged by Famitsu’s weekly rankings, but digital-download tallying methods vary by outlet, and since both Nintendo and Sony sell digital versions, straightforward comparisons are tricky. The Tokyo Game Show attendee survey is also prone to skew, since the people who actually show up tend to be core gamers, which may not reflect the real market makeup. And as the Cross Marketing survey cited in the thread shows, results can shift dramatically depending on which age group you look at — a detail that’s easy to overlook. What this thread’s back-and-forth ultimately shows is that which platform is “winning” can look completely different depending on whether you measure by concurrent viewers, sales figures, or survey data.

  • Sony’s New Showcase Falls Short of a Nintendo Direct? 5ch Split

Sony’s new product showcase “State of Play,” which aired on September 6, 2026, drew a wave of comments on 5ch’s gaming hardware board saying it “paled in comparison to a Nintendo Direct.” Alongside complaints about the shortage of new game reveals and the show’s pacing, posters noted that overseas reactions echoed the same criticism. Meanwhile, other posts pivoted to comparing the two companies’ revenue and sales figures, turning the discussion into something bigger than just a review of the broadcast itself.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

“State of Play” is Sony’s showcase for new titles, while “Nindai” is shorthand for Nintendo’s official equivalent — the two are frequently pitted against each other as venues for announcing new games. In recent years, buoyed partly by the strong performance of the Nintendo Switch 2, differences in presentation content and pacing between the two companies’ shows have become a recurring topic among gaming fans. The revenue, unit-sales, and monthly-active-user figures cited in the thread come from anonymous posts with no sources or methodology given, and should not be mistaken for official company disclosures. Likewise, the claim that Sony modeled its show format on Nintendo Direct is simply users’ impression, not a confirmed fact. Behind the split opinions on the broadcast lies more than just runtime or the number of titles announced — it also reflects a difference in approach, namely whether the focus is on updates to existing titles or on brand-new reveals.

  • Soaring Chip Prices Cast a Shadow Over Next-Gen Consoles — 5ch: ‘We Might Never Get Another One’

Sparked by an article covering a CEDEC2026 presentation, a discussion broke out on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (“Geha”) board over whether a next-generation game console is even feasible anymore. The catalyst was news that TSMC has been notifying customers of annual price hikes for its most advanced processes through 2029, with wafer costs for the 3nm generation projected to climb from around $27,000 in late 2025 to roughly $36,000 by 2028. Against this backdrop of persistently high chip costs, opinions split over whether a business model built on mature, cost-down technology like Nintendo’s could survive, whether Sony and Microsoft could compete on the same footing, and whether PCs might eventually take over the role of home consoles.

    19AnonymousSep 6, 2026 21:33
    Re: #10
The question is whether the tech will actually mature (get cheap) at all.
Even if the Switch 3 uses a 4nm process, 4nm might still be cutting-edge as late as 2035.
And while everyone throws around "5nm" and "3nm," the old scaling law only really held up to around 20nm — today's "3nm" is really more like an 8nm-equivalent.
The node names keep getting finer while real gains slow down.

    >If people can't afford a PC, they'll just lower their expectations and play mobile games instead (zero investment as a gaming device)

PC, PlayStation, and Xbox are basically bound together — it's that three-way alliance that builds the massive market AAA games depend on. There's no way PC alone could sustain AAA development, idiot.
If multiplatform consoles disappear, PC just goes back to being a niche machine for hardcore gamers like it used to be.
    31AnonymousSep 6, 2026 21:41
    Re: #20
It'll just split back into separate PC game makers and console game makers.
Or rather, PC game makers will just start making mobile games too.
Only companies like Nintendo, which can sustain a dedicated console with their own first-party titles, will be able to keep mid-tier console hardware alive.

Do you seriously think the PC gaming industry would just collapse if PlayStation disappeared?
    43AnonymousSep 6, 2026 21:57
    Re: #31
PC gaming and consoles originally evolved on separate tracks — PC only started working as a kind of "upgraded version" capable of running AAA titles from around the late PS3 era.
But getting that software supply as the "upgraded version" only works because there's a bigger, more widespread console market underneath it. Take that away, and PC just goes back to being mainly an indie/niche-game/online-game machine like it was before the PS3.

Well, longtime PC gamers probably wouldn't mind that, but for guys who only play PC to feel superior in console-war arguments, that would be fatal.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The backdrop here is that TSMC has been notifying customers of annual price increases for its leading-edge processes through 2029. Wafer prices for the 3nm-class node are projected to rise from roughly $27,000 in late 2025 to about $36,000 by 2028. What’s often overlooked is that in recent years, node names like “3nm” and “5nm” no longer track the old scaling law (where density and cost improve proportionally) — the naming no longer matches real-world performance gains. The thread split between those who believe “a next-gen console is viable if you just raise performance” and those who argue “without being able to pass costs on to consumers, home consoles themselves become unsustainable,” with the latter group further divided over whether PC could serve as a substitute. Worth keeping in mind: a console’s survival isn’t just about the hardware’s own profitability — it’s tied to the market size (the interdependence of PC, PlayStation, and Xbox) that underpins AAA development budgets. This isn’t simply a debate about a “performance race.”

Then why'd you even come into this thread?

Background and key points of this topic

DLSS is an AI upscaling/frame-generation technology developed by NVIDIA, and DLSS5, the subject of this thread, is its latest generation. Some comments in the thread claim things like “PS5 and Switch2 support DLSS,” but these consoles use AMD chips, and since DLSS is fundamentally an NVIDIA-exclusive technology, getting it to run — as replies 6 and 71 point out — requires special workarounds (such as running in INT8), and even then comes with significant performance trade-offs. AMD has its own equivalent technology called FSR, and it’s easy for information conflating the two to spread on social media and in videos, which is a point readers can easily get confused about. It’s also worth noting that the footage shown in the thread comes from individual mods and demos, and isn’t directly comparable to the finished quality of GTA6 itself. The discussion mainly broke down into three points: whether the visual leap is genuine, how practical this is on AMD hardware, and how steep the required PC investment is.

On September 6, Shizuoka Prefectural Police’s mountain rescue team saved a man in his 20s who had become unable to move while descending Mt. Fuji near the 8th station. The man had climbed Fuji as part of an offline meetup with friends he’d met through a smartphone game, and forgetting the pants to his rain gear left him chilled to the point of apparent hypothermia. On 5ch, posters questioned why a smartphone game meetup turned into a Mt. Fuji climb and criticized the sloppy gear planning that skipped proper rain protection, while others with firsthand experience noted that cases serious enough to require an actual rescue transport are rare — most people simply recover at the 8th station rest hut — revealing a divide in how seriously posters take the risk of getting stranded on the mountain.

"Forgot it" → more like left it behind on purpose because it's a hassle. I'm a farmer, so I often work in just the rain jacket without the pants. Putting the pants on is a pain — they trap moisture and you end up soaked in sweat anyway. Whether you wear them or not, your pants end up wet either way, so it doesn't really make a difference.
    99AnonymousSep 6, 2026 18:25
    Re: #89
It's really common for beginners to underestimate how much they need rain pants on a mountain. Mountain rain splashes back up at you from below (and on Fuji especially, wind gusts blast straight up the slope), so you really can't handle it without them. Down at sea level it wouldn't matter, but up there it's a different story.

Climbing in obviously terrible weather with no rain gear, lol. Why didn't his friends stop him? lol

    Background and Key Points

Mt. Fuji stands 3,776 meters tall, and temperature is said to drop roughly 0.6°C per 100 meters of elevation, so even when it’s comfortable at the base, the area around the 8th station (over 3,000 meters) can dip into single-digit temperatures Celsius even in midsummer — and once clothing gets wet from rain, wind chill accelerates the drop in body temperature even further. Some posters in the thread claimed “even the summit should be around 20°C,” but that reflects a misunderstanding that underestimates high-altitude weather conditions. Also, most people who get into trouble on the mountain aren’t seriously ill enough to need a rescue transport — the majority simply recover at the 8th station mountain hut, and helicopter evacuation is reserved for only the more severe cases. It’s also worth keeping in mind that climbs organized among friends who met through a smartphone game — a different kind of motivation and relationship than traditional mountaineering enthusiasts — are becoming more common, and this trend is part of the backdrop that makes it easier for basic gear like rain protection to get overlooked.

In a launch year you're booking R&D costs for the Switch 2 hardware itself, and since the console hasn't spread widely yet there's a low ceiling on software sales — so both revenue and profit dip.
Year 4 onward is when it'll peak.
    17AnonymousSep 6, 2026 17:46
    Re: #14
Aren't they booking R&D costs every year anyway?
Or are they front-loading 8 years' worth at once? (lol)

Honestly it's kind of pitiful picturing people desperately grinding through trash games on a trash machine like the Switch.
    71AnonymousSep 6, 2026 18:18
    Re: #16
You're the one playing trash on your console, aren't you? Or do you not even play it, just bask in the feeling of owning one?
Most domestic PS users, aside from a small core, don't even buy new releases — yet you talk big. (lol)
Guess that's the fate of owners of hardware that's great on paper but doesn't sell?

■PS5 is bombing hard in North America. Even with GTA6 announced, it's only selling 1/6th as much as the Switch 2 😭

    Switch 2: 6,000 units in a week
(Price hike overseas on Sept 1, and even after slowing down, this is still the result)

    PS5: 1,000 units in a week (lol)

    It's the R&D spending.
Nintendo: ¥300 billion profit against ¥150 billion R&D.
Sony: ¥400 billion profit against ¥300 billion R&D.
    No wonder the margin's lower.

Sony can't sell buy-once-and-play games, so its real rival isn't Nintendo — it's smartphones.

Miyamoto: First of all, I was glad the Switch lasted 8 to 9 years. I don't think this is an era where customers are chasing specs above all else anymore. My ideal is that as long as you buy the software, you can play it on whatever machine you already have at home. Smartphones have already become something that's "everywhere," after all — I think that's one form of the ideal.

Since that's the "ideal" he's describing, doesn't that make it a rival? (lol)

Same as how the Famicom (NES) once got totally crushed by PlayStation and lost its dominance —
hardware that's inferior is simply doomed to fade away.
And on top of that, "Owatendo" (a mocking nickname meaning "Nintendo is finished") can't even undercut on price anymore, so they're completely cornered.

Nintendo could probably build buildings to their heart's content.

They could probably even dabble in real estate as a side business without breaking a sweat.

No one expected prices to shoot up like that.
Without the price hike they probably could've kept up the fastest-ever sales pace, so that's just bad luck.

Sony's fine since they can keep riding the PS5, but launching a brand-new console is rough.

Background and key points of the debate

Nintendo is in the launch year of its new Switch 2 hardware, a period typically marked by heavy upfront investment and R&D spending, yet its operating margin (18%) still comes out ahead of Sony’s (15%). On the other hand, Sony’s game segment revenue of ¥4.4 trillion is more than double Nintendo’s ¥2.05 trillion, and the thread split over whether to weigh “scale” or “margin” more heavily. It’s also easy to overlook that Sony doesn’t disclose net profit for its game segment alone, and there were pointed comments about how advertising expenses are categorized in the filings — meaning which figures you focus on can flip the impression of who “won.” Judging management performance on a simple revenue comparison alone would be premature.

  • Sony Registers ‘Legend of Zelda’ Domain, Sparks Buzz Over Movie Distribution Deal

Sony’s registration of domain names related to a live-action “Legend of Zelda” film has become a hot topic on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (“Geha”) board. It’s already known that Sony Pictures will distribute the movie, and the thread buzzed with questions like “why Sony?” and “aren’t these two rivals — so why are they cooperating on a movie?” Some posters brought up the infamous collapse of the 1991 joint PlayStation development plan, reviving discussion of Nintendo and Sony’s tangled 30-plus-year relationship. Much of the thread, though, leaned more toward playful “who’s really on top” needling between fanbases than toward pinning down hard facts.

Meanwhile Spider-Man's over here like "Xperia…? (fiddling with a Galaxy phone)"

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Sony and Nintendo compete directly in the games industry, yet they’ve maintained a long-running licensing relationship through their music and film divisions. For this live-action “Legend of Zelda” film, Sony Pictures was chosen partly because so few companies can handle worldwide theatrical distribution — so the two companies aren’t simply rivals here. The thread also revisited the story of the failed 1991 joint PlayStation development plan and the subsequent falling-out over the CD-ROM standard (sometimes nicknamed the “Yamaichi War,” after a notorious business feud), a reminder of just how long this history runs. That said, the domain registration itself is only an early sign of things to come — the actual terms of the distribution deal and how box-office revenue will be split haven’t been disclosed. Much of the thread’s chatter boiled down to “who’s really on top”-style needling, so it’s worth remembering that the only confirmed fact here is that preparations for the film’s release are moving forward.
