  • Nintendo’s New Remake Priced at ¥8,980 Sparks Debate: “Did They Just Polish the Graphics?”

A thread went up on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board about Nintendo’s new remake title. Some users pushed back on the ¥8,980 price tag, arguing “all they did was polish the graphics, add full voice acting, and throw in a jump button, and that’s the price?” while others praised the solid approach of boosting quality-of-life without touching the original’s core structure. Later in the thread, a long back-and-forth broke out over a hidden “burn the terrain to proceed” trick that’s existed since the original game, with posters disagreeing over whether it counts as a bug exploit or a legitimate strategy.

Seems like the puzzles actually changed too — that spiderweb which used to only break if you dropped from a height now burns through instead
But people who never actually played it ("air-play" posers) wouldn't notice

Funny thing is, you could burn through it in the original too
Equip a burning Deku Stick, and while at critical health wheezing for breath, it catches and lets you push through

Speaking of behind-the-scenes stories from back then, apparently Camelot's Takahashi brothers cleared the Water Temple without ever finding the Zora Tunic

I'm saying jumping down from a height to break through is the intended method
The web itself can technically be burned, but swinging your stick normally doesn't connect downward, so you can't burn it that way under normal play

Background and Key Points of This Debate

The title generating discussion this time isn’t a brand-new Nintendo game, but a remake of an existing one. It reportedly features modernized graphics, full voice acting, a free-moving camera, and an added jump command, while deliberately keeping things like the original loading times to preserve the original’s atmosphere. It’s priced at ¥8,980, and the thread saw posts comparing that to GTA6’s price — though it’s worth noting that, as of this writing, GTA6 doesn’t actually have a confirmed retail price yet, so that comparison was based purely on one poster’s hearsay. The argument that heated up later in the thread — over whether the spiderweb can be burned through — turns out to be a hidden trick that existed in the original game as well, apparently because it was barely documented in strategy guides at the time. The fact that this remake is being judged not by “how much was changed” but by “how much comfort was added without breaking the original” reflects the differing expectations longtime fans bring to remakes.

  • Chiikawa Movie Box Office Hits ¥14 Billion — 5ch Gaming Board Buzzes Over ‘Beating Mario’

A tally posted on X reported that box office revenue for the movie “Chiikawa: The Secret of the Mermaid Island” had reached an estimated ¥14.053 billion as of its 47th day in theaters, and on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (“Geha”) board, the figure sparked discussion for apparently surpassing the first Mario movie. The thread buzzed with talk of Chiikawa’s broad audience appeal and whether other Nintendo-adjacent characters (like Kirby) could compete, while old posts showing that Chiikawa’s creator, Nagano, is a fan of Nintendo and Pokémon were also dug up, drawing reactions from an angle unrelated to the box office comparison itself. Opinions were also divided over the quality of the Mario movie itself.

    Background and Talking Points

“Chiikawa: The Secret of the Mermaid Island” is a theatrical anime based on the popular “Chiikawa” IP, with box office reported to have reached roughly ¥14 billion as of its 47th day in theaters. The “Mario” movie brought up for comparison in the thread is a Nintendo-based CG animated film that was a massive hit both in Japan and abroad, but the posts mix domestic and worldwide figures, as well as yen and dollar amounts, without laying them out in a directly comparable way — worth keeping in mind when reading. It also became a talking point that Chiikawa’s creator, Nagano, had previously posted a lot of Nintendo- and Pokémon-related fan art, but this is based solely on Nagano’s own public social media posts and doesn’t indicate any official relationship with those companies. On the Geha board, fans sparring over box office numbers for their favorite franchises is a familiar routine, but this time the discussion also took off from the angle of the creator’s personal interests.

*This article is compiled as an excerpt and summary of the 5ch (Hardware/Industry “Geha”) thread “Breaking! Chiikawa goes and surpasses the first Mario movie!!!.”

  • Why Is Chiikawa So Popular? 5ch: “A Life Closer to Death Than in Monster Hunter”

A thread titled “Chiikawa — what’s even good about it?” popped up on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry board (Geha) and pulled in over 40 replies. The discussion ranged widely — from claims that the creator is a woman, to similarities with Sanrio’s Kitty and Kanahei’s characters, to debate over adults enjoying character merch. What stood out most was the observation that “the art style is cute, but underneath it’s a brutal, FromSoftware-style world,” with reply after reply arguing that this gap between cuteness and brutality is exactly Chiikawa’s appeal.

I guess technically it's manga-based, so it's kind of like Goma-chan from Shonen Ashibe, but who'd have guessed the characters and merch would blow up this big. Nintendo's fine since it's global scale and games are the main business, but the ones probably sweating are Sanrio (outside of Kitty) and San-X.

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

Chiikawa began as a character illustrator Nagano posted on social media, and went on to become a nationwide hit through an anime adaptation and merchandise. In the thread, opinions were split over whether it runs in a Kodansha or Shogakukan publication — a mix-up likely rooted in the fact that it started as SNS content before being collected into print volumes. The creator’s gender has also never been officially confirmed; the only basis offered in the thread was speculation drawn from an old photo of the creator giving a talk, not hard fact. The most frequently cited reason for the series’ popularity was “the gap between the cute art style and its brutal setting,” with many commenters comparing it to FromSoftware games or Monster Hunter. Meanwhile, the thread also branched off into a separate debate over whether it’s appropriate for adults to enjoy character merchandise.

  • Nippon Ichi Software President: ‘Sony Won’t Tell Us Their Long-Term Plans for Killing Off Discs’

In an interview with overseas media, Nippon Ichi Software president Kenzo Saruhashi revealed that regarding Sony’s plan to phase out disc versions of PS5 games, “they won’t tell us the long-term intent or plan.” Sony has stated that new titles releasing from January 2028 onward will drop disc versions entirely, while production of discs for existing titles will continue. On 5ch’s Gehan (hardware/industry) board, discussion centered on Sony’s thin information-sharing with third parties, opinions on Nintendo Switch 2’s Game-Key Cards, and the fallout from the disappearance of the packaged-game market.

Changing the subject, I’d like to ask about Nintendo Switch 2.

One of the new physical-game initiatives Nintendo introduced with Switch 2 is the Game-Key Card.

    4AnonymousSep 8, 2026 15:10
Sony's own first-party titles keep bombing back-to-back and they're basically living off third parties, yet they're still pulling their 'keep it in the family' act even on third-party devs? That's exactly why studios are dropping PlayStation, and why even the loyalists mockingly nicknamed "Discard-Station" fans (a slang jab meaning even PS diehards) can't get info out of them either 😊
    7AnonymousSep 8, 2026 15:17

Even Square Enix had to make adjustments just to fit FF7 Rebirth on disc — it ended up as a single disc (with mandatory extra downloaded data).
    Rockstar's GTA6 is going code-in-box.

So it's not like Sony's playing favorites with the big publishers either.
    12AnonymousSep 8, 2026 15:21
Look at Square Enix — they scrambled to lock in a release date for FF7 Remake Part 3, and the DLC won't even come out until 2028 or later.

    Re: #12
Sounds like their sales plans got thrown into chaos. They were probably planning an all-in-one collector's edition down the line, but without a disc it'll just be a flimsy paper edition — that could hurt sales.
    15AnonymousSep 8, 2026 15:23
Small-to-mid publishers make more profit from pushing physical copies into stores than they lose from used-game sales. That's exactly why they've been kowtowing to Sony all this time.

Big retailers don't obsess over pre-order bonuses, but small retailers lobby publishers hard to make sure their own store-exclusive bonus is a good one.

That's literally how store-exclusive bonuses exist in the first place.

    Re: #1
One interesting point: sales don't seem to change even with Game-Key Cards — that matches the impression you get from the weekly sales data too. To begin with, sales aren't really different between the Switch and Switch 2 versions on cross-gen releases. For some titles the Switch 2 version even sells better, and that's especially true for third-party titles lately.

Given that, there's not much reason right now for third parties to shy away from releasing on Game-Key Cards (and going by the data, actual cartridge packaging doesn't really boost sales either, so it's not much of a loss). If a game's file size is huge there could be some impact, but for a normal-sized game it's a non-issue. That said, long-term, rising storage prices could become a factor — that would force extra spending onto users, which inevitably eats into their game-buying budget. So it's still better for a game not to eat up too much storage.

City Connection raised the price and went with physical Switch 2 Game Cards — I'd honestly like to know if that's actually paying off (i.e., boosting sales).

This is one of the downsides people on the Gehan board have pointed out. Once the packaged-game market disappears, limited editions and pre-order-bonus tie-ins obviously go with it. The ones who'll really suffer from that are exactly small-to-mid third parties like Nippon Ichi.

It makes sense that third parties rate Game-Key Cards highly. From a third party's perspective, the cheaper cartridge cost is basically pure upside with almost no downside. Sure, it trades that for downsides on the user's end — extra storage burden and requiring an internet connection — but if it doesn't hurt sales, third parties can just shrug that off.

How long will disc drive production even continue? Will PS6 support a disc drive, and if not, is there some alternative media? Are they planning — or even able — to keep the packaged market alive with code-in-box releases?

Honestly, it's nothing but open questions.
    81AnonymousSep 8, 2026 16:17
Code-in-box will probably disappear too. Making a plastic box the same size as now just to hold a code is a waste of money. The boxed version of something like GTA6 is likely just a stopgap for this transitional period. After January 2028, what gets sold at retail will probably be download cards, like what Nintendo's doing now. There are only a handful of collectors who enjoy lining up game boxes on a shelf anyway, so it should be fine to cut that group loose.
    84AnonymousSep 8, 2026 16:19

Code-in-box and download cards are handled completely differently as products, so it's not that simple. And besides, that's a method PlayStation already discontinued once before — doing it again would mean deliberately reviving it.

Once physical copies disappear, word-of-mouth spread beyond advertising goes away too, and it becomes a really closed-off world. Even a game that becomes a huge hit on Steam, most people barely register it, right?

To become a social phenomenon like Dragon Quest, people actually need to be talking about it. What disappears is the place where an average person might think 'hey, let me give this a try.'

What this tells us is that Sony's own announcement still leaves room for a walk-back. The fact that they haven't officially notified third parties basically confirms it. Re: #96
Can't, they already switched to a different disc factory.

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

Sony has already announced that, starting in January 2028, it will stop releasing physical disc versions of new PS5 titles while continuing to produce discs for existing titles, and on the thread there was pushback along the lines of “saying they haven’t communicated anything seems off.” At the same time, some argued that what publishers actually want to know goes deeper than the consumer-facing announcement — things like how long disc drive production itself will continue and what Sony’s approach will be for PS6 — and that gap is what President Saruhashi’s remarks reflect. Data was cited showing Nintendo’s Game-Key Cards haven’t had much impact on sales for smaller-capacity titles, but there was also concern that if the packaged-game market shrinks, small and mid-size third parties will lose revenue streams they’ve relied on, like limited editions and used-game sales. Cases of major titles such as GTA6 and the Final Fantasy VII remake sticking with discs were also raised as points of comparison.

  • Ocarina of Time Remake Price Allegedly Spotted on Australian eShop — 5ch: ‘Probably a Lazy Remake’

Social media users reportedly spotted a listing on an Australian eShop showing the upcoming remake of “The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time” priced at AU$94.95 (roughly $60 USD). On the thread, the low price fueled speculation that this might be more of a remaster than a full remake, while others pointed to the graphical style as a sign that FromSoftware or Monolith Soft could be involved. A release date of November 13 was also floated, prompting some concern about competing with a major title launching the following week.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

“The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time” originally released for the Nintendo 64 in 1998, and the series marks its 40th anniversary this year. It’s worth noting that the price information causing all the buzz was simply a number displayed on one overseas eShop listing — it is not an official announcement from Nintendo. The thread’s opinions split mainly on two points: first, whether the roughly $60 price tag signals a “budget, simplified remake” or is simply a reasonable price; and second, speculation over which studio is actually handling development. Some pointed to the graphical style as reason to suspect involvement from FromSoftware or Monolith Soft, but this remains pure speculation. The November 13 release date is also unconfirmed, and while some raised concerns about it clashing with a major title launching the following week, that too is still just a rumor, and its real-world impact on sales is unknown at this time.

A post on X (formerly Twitter) claiming that “GTA6’s PC version could be delayed due to console shortages” got picked up on 5ch’s hardware/industry (Geha) board. But posters quickly pointed out that the original post never actually said “delay” — it only said “move” — and that the article it cited actually described Rockstar moving the PC release earlier, not later. The consensus became that a simple machine-translation slip likely produced the “delay” headline, and the thread also noted once again that no official release date has ever actually been announced.

Delayed because of a console shortage?

    Hmm… really?

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

GTA5’s PC version famously launched about a year and a half after the console versions, and this thread again pointed out how hard it is for Rockstar to optimize multiple platforms at once. The “delay” report traces back to a post on X (formerly Twitter) whose original text only said the PC release date “may move,” and posters pointed out that machine translation rendered that as “delay.” In fact, some noted that the article cited as the source actually described Rockstar moving the PC version up due to console shortages, not pushing it back — meaning the underlying report was ambiguous from the start and took on a life of its own. Neither GTA6’s PC nor console release date has been officially confirmed, so for now, both “delay” and “moved up” remain nothing more than differing interpretations of a single post.

※This article was compiled and summarized from the 5ch (Hardware/Industry (Geha)) thread “Bad news: GTA6’s PC version delayed.”

  • Post About Playing Switch 2 in Tabletop Mode at Home ‘It’s Super Comfortable’ Sparks Mixed Reactions

A post appeared on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board saying the poster plays their Switch 2 in tabletop mode at home while keeping it plugged into an AC adapter. Some replies questioned why anyone would use tabletop mode when they already have a TV or monitor, while others pointed out that, given the console’s short battery life as a handheld, staying plugged into an AC adapter has essentially become a prerequisite. The thread then drifted through topics like screen quality, how clean people keep their console, and family situations, before settling into the usual console-war bickering.

That's exactly what the Switch 2 is for then 🫩

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The Switch 2 is a hybrid console that doubles as both a handheld and a home console, and its short battery life when used as a handheld has been a point of criticism for some time. The ‘keep it plugged in and use tabletop mode’ setup described in this thread can be understood as a practical workaround — giving up on true portability in favor of relying on the AC adapter. Meanwhile, the latter half of the thread drifted through topics like screen quality, how clean people keep their console, and family situations, before turning into the usual back-and-forth between diehard fans of rival consoles. This kind of exchange is a common pattern on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry board, and individual comments shouldn’t be mistaken for an evaluation of the product itself. This article focuses mainly on excerpting the discussion around the original tabletop-mode setup.

  • Leaker Nate: “Ocarina of Time Is Getting a Full Remake”

Nintendo is gearing up for a livestream tied to the 40th anniversary of “The Legend of Zelda,” and with less than 24 hours to go before it airs, prominent leaker Nate posted his predictions. According to him, the Ocarina of Time remake won’t just be a graphical overhaul or HD touch-up — it will be a far more ambitious project, adding a modernized combat system and free jumping action. On 5ch’s hardware/industry (Geha) board, the prediction sparked a mix of reactions: some agreed that “a graphics-only remake would be pointless,” others pointed out the technical difficulty of achieving seamless dungeon layouts and map design, and still others voiced skepticism about the leaker’s prediction itself.

With less than 24 hours left before the “Zelda”-related stream (Zelda Direct), Nate shared his own predictions.

    • The Ocarina of Time remake won’t be a simple one-to-one recreation — it’ll be something more ambitious

    • A modernized combat system and free jumping action will be added

If the map between the castle town and the castle gets a completely different layout, which category is that?

    Re: #41
Well, the story isn't that tightly plotted to begin with, so making the dungeon order free wouldn't be impossible
(though you'd still need the child/adult split).

But if they give you all the key items up front to enable free dungeon order, yet can't provide
a huge Breath of the Wild-style map, it'd end up feeling like a shrunken-down BotW — kind of underwhelming.
    50AnonymousSep 8, 2026 08:53
Well, they're doing a dedicated Direct for it, so it's surely a real remake.

    Re: #50
Setting aside whether it's a full remake or not —
this isn't a dedicated Ocarina of Time Direct.
It's the Zelda 40th Anniversary Direct, and
Nintendo has officially said it'll cover things beyond just games too.

They'll probably spend a good chunk of time on the movie,
and if there's a concert or merch like there was for the 30th anniversary, they'll promote that too.
If there's ever a dedicated Ocarina of Time Direct, I'd expect that to happen separately.
    57AnonymousSep 8, 2026 09:10
    Re: #50
Also, they haven't shown any actual gameplay footage yet,
so it seems unlikely they'd jump straight to a dedicated-Direct level of detail, no?

    54AnonymousSep 8, 2026 09:07
Dungeons are the core of the fun, but the exact internal layout isn't essential to Ocarina of Time itself (see: the existence of the "Master Quest" remixed version),
so I'd bet they change at least that much.
    55AnonymousSep 8, 2026 09:09

I'm in the camp of: keep the "front" (standard) quest faithful to the original,

    Re: #54
Changing the dungeon layouts wouldn't hurt the story at all,
but designing brand-new dungeons with well-tuned difficulty from scratch is a seriously hard task,
and development difficulty would skyrocket — so who knows how it'll turn out.
    58AnonymousSep 8, 2026 09:11

Too many slow people out there assuming it's all about the game.
Going by the usual pattern, it'll mostly be movie stuff plus some weird anniversary merch,
with the game side limited to Ocarina of Time, maybe a Virtual Console-style title,
and if we're lucky, a teasing bit of new-game footage at the very end.
That's about the size of it.

    • Mario Tennis
    • Wonder (two-edition release)

Monolith's been running job postings for "Zelda development staff" for about 7 years now,
so if that's the case, the development period would be substantial too.

Miyazaki of Keio University was a shrewd one.

Getting to work on Ocarina of Time at the peak of his career must be the height of happiness.

Off to reconsider Ocarina of Time alongside Aonuma of Tokyo University of the Arts.

Background and Key Points of Discussion

Ocarina of Time was already ported to 3DS back in 2011, but that version was a “faithful port” that kept the dungeon layouts and story essentially unchanged. The HD versions of The Wind Waker and Twilight Princess likewise focused mainly on graphical upgrades, with only limited changes to the actual content. Nate’s prediction discussed here breaks from those precedents, suggesting a “full remake” that reworks combat and action as well — though it remains unconfirmed information ahead of the Zelda 40th Anniversary Direct. Reactions in the thread were split: some expressed hope, arguing “a graphics-only remake would be pointless”; others raised concerns about the technical difficulty of seamless map design and dungeon redesign; and still others were skeptical of the leaker’s accuracy itself. It’s worth noting that, including whether Monolith Soft is the developer, Nintendo has made no official announcement at this point — everything remains speculation.

  • ‘FH6’ PS5 Version Gets Year-End Release Mention in Official Update Blog — 5ch: ‘Total Unconditional Surrender to PlayStation, LOL’

Regarding “Forza Horizon 6,” which has so far been rolled out for Xbox and PC, the developer’s official update blog (Series 5) explicitly stated that “the PS5 version is planned for release later this year.” Up to now, the release timing for the PS5 version had never been clearly stated officially, and some had even whispered rumors of a cancellation — but this new wording effectively reconfirms that a release within the year is still the plan. On 5ch’s hardware/industry board, the announcement sparked debate over whether the cancellation rumors were ever true, whether the PS5 version will support Quick Resume, and the merits of Microsoft’s multiplatform strategy overall.

With both the console and cloud pricing going up, they're clearly banking on not gaining new customers anyway, so there's no way they'd drop first-party multiplatform releases. If anything gets cut, it'll be the next-gen console itself, lol

Racing games are (in a sense) a niche/enthusiast genre, so regular people don't really feel the need for them.

Asha (5ch nickname for Xbox leadership) completely botched the brand's steering. They should've treated console as someone else's turf, supplied Sony and Nintendo with software from day one, and kept PC exclusive to their own store. Stop clinging to console. You're a Windows company — leaning hard into being a PC gaming outfit would've been way better.

    Re: #30
Exclusive to the MS Store, which is worse than Epic? No way. They need to release on Steam, GOG, and Epic like normal. Even Epic's store usability and launcher are terrible, and MS Store is worse than that.
    33AnonymousSep 8, 2026 05:19
    Re: #31
Once you get used to it, the MS Store's fine actually. Points pile up fast, and it's not flooded with mass-produced shovelware indies the way Steam is.

That's the kind of thinking you'd expect from a third party with no platform of their own.

    Re: #42
If they sell it, it's guaranteed to top 5 million copies, so canceling it now would be idiotic. At ¥2,000 a copy, that's ¥10 billion just from the base game — plus paid DLC stacked on top.
    47AnonymousSep 8, 2026 06:31
Gears ended up as a trash-box exclusive purely on Asha's mood that day, and the studio got saddled with massive losses because of it.

Forza, the face of Xbox, surrenders unconditionally to PlayStation, lol lol

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The Forza Horizon series has traditionally been an Xbox-and-PC affair, and the fate of a PS5 version had remained officially ambiguous. What sparked this discussion was a single line added to the developer’s official season-by-season update blog stating that “a PS5 version is planned for release later this year.” The timing is only specified as “later this year,” with no concrete release date given. While many in the thread took this as confirmation that the cancellation rumors were false, opinions were also divided on more practical points — such as how the porting costs would realistically be recouped, and whether skipping Quick Resume support was justified given past save-data-loss trouble in the game. Note that discussions like this tend to center on exchanges between supporters of particular platforms, and posts aimed at mocking individuals’ abilities or personal attributes have been excluded from this article.

  • Pokémon Company’s Revenue Surges 4.4x in 5 Years to ¥531.4 Billion

In The Pokémon Company’s financial results for the fiscal year ending February 2026, revenue reached approximately ¥531.428 billion — about 4.4 times what it was five years ago. Net profit has also grown roughly 13.6-fold over eight years, surpassing ¥120 billion, numbers that highlight just how lucrative the Pokémon brand has become. The news sparked discussion on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board, where posters compared the figures to “Palworld,” which had been a hot topic around the same time, debated Pokémon’s merits as a finished game, and argued over whether Pokémon should keep sticking to Nintendo platforms.

    Palworld

    • Full-release sales: 1.8 million copies
    • Trading cards flopped hard
    • Streamers hate it, nobody's playing it on stream

Honestly, tying a great IP like Pokémon down to a company like Nintendo is a huge loss for Japan

    Re: #102
There was a Pokémon stamp rally going on until recently, so they were probably fuming every time they went to the station

    Background and Talking Points

The article stems from The Pokémon Company’s financial results for the fiscal year ending February 2026: revenue of ¥531.428 billion, and net profit up roughly 13.6-fold over eight years to top ¥120 billion. That revenue figure isn’t just console game sales — it also includes trading cards, mobile games, and licensing income from theme parks and stamp rallies, so it can’t simply be reduced to unit-sales numbers. In the thread, many posts compared these figures to “Palworld,” which had been trending around the same time, but the two companies’ revenue structures are different enough that a direct comparison doesn’t really hold up. Some comments also confused Palworld’s full-release sales with its Early Access sales. There were calls for Pokémon to break away from Nintendo, but the discussion didn’t fully acknowledge that the IP has already expanded well beyond home consoles — into mobile games, trading cards, and real-world event tie-ins.
