  • Ministop Store-Closure Wave: Chain Bracing for a ¥6 Billion Net Loss

Convenience store chain Ministop, part of the Aeon Group, revealed in a January 8 disclosure that it expects a net loss of roughly ¥6 billion for the fiscal year ending February 2026. As store closures keep piling up, a thread on 5ch’s Gaming Hardware (“Geha”) board asked why customers aren’t showing up despite the chain’s signature in-store cooking and soft-serve ice cream. Posters complained about there being no stores nearby, rising soft-serve prices, bento quality, and poor customer service — though others chimed in with childhood memories and genuine affection for the soft-serve, so opinions were split.

Ministop Hit by a Wave of Closures… The “Fatal Flaw” Hidden Behind Its In-Store Cooking and Soft-Serve

Ministop, the convenience store chain under the Aeon Group, disclosed on January 8 that it expects to post a net loss of roughly ¥6 billion for the fiscal year ending February 2026.

Hmm, about the only impression I have of the place is not-great memories of the staff.

The Ministop near me shut down and turned into a Maibasuke ("My Basket," Aeon's mini-supermarket chain).

That one's actually more convenient anyway, so no complaints here.
    4AnonymousSep 9, 2026 14:39
There's not even one near me to begin with.
That said, I actually really like their bentos.

I used to go to Ministop now and then just for the soft-serve, but I haven't been in a while.

They should just sell that one year-round — everything else on the menu tastes bad anyway.
    10AnonymousSep 9, 2026 14:45
Wouldn't it be simpler to just put a soft-serve machine in Maiba (My Basket) instead?
    11AnonymousSep 9, 2026 14:45
Ministop? Can't say I've ever heard of it.
    12AnonymousSep 9, 2026 14:47
It's because they overlap with Maibasuke (My Basket).
Also, for Uber Eats it's basically a landmark — you can order soft-serve in the middle of the night.
You should use it. Since it's Aeon-affiliated and gets haggled over by housewives all day, prices are generally cheap.
If I had to name a downside though, the bathrooms aren't great — and that's actually a big factor in getting people to stop by.
    14AnonymousSep 9, 2026 14:48
    Was it Ministop?
Back in the day they had a gumbo soup sandwich and a corn soup sandwich that were so good I ate them all the time.
    15AnonymousSep 9, 2026 14:48
The soft-serve got way too expensive.

Yeah, it's pricey — McDonald's still sells theirs for under 200 yen.
    20AnonymousSep 9, 2026 14:52
The ice cream branding is so loud it drowns out the fact that it's even a convenience store.
It just doesn't cross my mind as an option when I think about stopping by one.
    21AnonymousSep 9, 2026 14:54
Just turn it into a dedicated soft-serve shop already.

Their whole "dominant strategy" (blanketing an area with stores) clearly isn't working.
There's only one location anywhere near me.
The other big chains actually have multiple stores within walking or biking distance.
    26AnonymousSep 9, 2026 15:01
    I'm not paying 400 yen for soft-serve.
At least 300 — 280 yen would be about fair.

I used to love their X Potato (a Ministop hot snack) and bought it all the time, but I haven't been lately.

If you don't go often, you just don't know how to order.
You end up wondering "will they even make one for me at this hour?" and asking feels like a hassle, and if they say no there's nothing else you wanted anyway — so you just think, forget it, not going.
    56AnonymousSep 9, 2026 16:46
You can't get soft-serve anywhere except Ministop.

I always figured the workload on staff at Ministop looks brutal, so no wonder they can't find part-timers.

    Re: #92
Yeah, I go there sometimes and the staff really do look swamped — they've got soft-serve duty piled on top of everything else.

    Background and Talking Points

Ministop is an Aeon Group convenience store chain that has leaned on in-store cooked fast food and soft-serve ice cream to set itself apart. Neither the original article nor the thread spells this out directly, but its locations and customer base overlap heavily with Maibasuke (“My Basket”), another Aeon-affiliated grocery chain — a structural issue that’s likely behind the complaints about how few Ministop stores there are. The thread leans heavily on gripes about pricing, service, and store density, but plenty of posters also voiced real affection for the soft-serve and fried snacks, so the verdict isn’t a simple “it’s bad” or “it’s inconvenient.” It’s also worth noting the projected ¥6 billion net loss comes straight from the company’s own disclosure — separate from the thread’s gut-level complaints, factors like store-opening strategy and labor costs are almost certainly part of the real story.

  • Next Nintendo Direct’s ‘Win Conditions’ Spark Heated Debate on 5ch: ‘Ocarina of Time Alone Already Wins It’

Ahead of Nintendo’s next Nintendo Direct, a thread on 5ch’s hardware and industry (Gehan) board tried to pin down exactly what Nintendo would need to announce to “win.” Some posters felt the last Direct paled next to Sony’s recent State of Play, and many argued the “win line” should be the appearance of a major third-party title like GTA6, Genshin Impact, or a new Monster Hunter. Others countered that Nintendo had “already won” simply because the Ocarina of Time remake had been announced previously. The thread also veered into listing what would count as a “loss” instead.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

This kind of “Nintendo Direct vs. State of Play” rivalry framing is a recurring topic on the hardware and industry (Gehan) board, and it’s less about actual release schedules or official announcements than about which event “generated more hype.” The GTA6, new Monster Hunter, and Genshin Impact rumors raised in the thread are all unconfirmed speculation at best, and some posts cite unverifiable “a friend told me” sources, making them hard to substantiate. The Ocarina of Time remake, meanwhile, was announced on a separate prior occasion and should arguably be judged independently from this particular Direct — yet posters were quick to declare the outcome “already decided,” which shows how much these debates are shaped by pre-existing hype levels.

※This article is compiled and summarized from the 5ch (Hardware/Industry board) thread “Let’s pin down exactly what Nintendo would need to announce in this Direct to count as a win.”

  • Zelda Direct vs. State of Play: A Stark Gap in YouTube Approval Ratings

Nintendo’s “Nintendo Direct” episode revealing new Zelda information aired around the same time as Sony’s “State of Play” stream (nicknamed “Sutepure” in Japan), and the gap between the two in YouTube like/dislike ratios and peak concurrent viewers became a hot topic on 5ch’s hardware/industry (“Geha”) board. Posters noted that State of Play had moments where dislikes actually outnumbered likes, and while Zelda’s peak concurrent viewership hit 670,000 in Japan and 730,000 in the US, State of Play’s numbers came in at 107,000 in Japan and 260,000 overseas. Screenshots comparing view counts were also posted, and reactions on the board were split over just how big the gap really was.

Well, it basically just announced that the Zelda concert would be held in countries outside Japan too
But for overseas fans, that alone made it a guaranteed-win Direct

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

It’s worth keeping in mind that YouTube’s dislike counts have been hidden from everyone but the uploader since a policy change in November 2021, so most of the “more dislikes than likes” claims in the thread come from browser extensions or third-party estimation tools rather than officially confirmed figures. Peak concurrent viewers are also just a snapshot from one moment during a stream, and don’t directly translate into a game’s critical reception or sales performance. While some posters argued that “concurrent viewer counts don’t mean anything,” pointing to past cases where high concurrent viewership didn’t translate into success, the gap between Zelda Direct and State of Play was large in both concurrent viewers and total views, and it was repeatedly noted that the scale of the difference was hard to write off as simple manipulation. Some also pointed out that State of Play’s own concurrent viewership had grown significantly compared to the previous year, making the coexistence of heavy dislikes and high attention one of the more interesting angles of the discussion.

  • New Zelda Game’s Loading Screens Were ‘Deliberately Kept,’ Says Aonuma — 5ch: ‘Because it’s deliberate!!’

A thread has appeared on 5ch’s Hardware & Industry (Geha) board about Eiji Aonuma, director of the Legend of Zelda series, reportedly saying that the loading screens in the new game were “deliberately kept.” Since Nintendo already achieved seamless transitions into dungeons in Tears of the Kingdom, attention has focused on why loading screens would be deliberately inserted this time around. The thread saw a clash between posters defending it as an intentional choice for pacing and presentation, and others suspicious it’s just an excuse for hardware limitations, with the back-and-forth never quite converging.

    Background and Points of Debate

Whether or not a console has loading times has, in recent years, become a straightforward yardstick for measuring hardware performance, and since the PS5 generation, “loadless” gameplay enabled by high-speed SSDs has become a selling point. Aonuma’s remark, in that context, comes across as a deliberately contrarian choice, and the thread split over whether this was simply a technical limitation dressed up as a creative decision, or a genuinely intentional artistic choice. One point that’s easy to miss is that using loading screens as a deliberate stylistic device isn’t unique to this case — other companies’ games have done the same (such as the door-opening animations in Resident Evil) — so it isn’t necessarily just an excuse for lacking technical power. On the other hand, details of the original interview this remark is sourced from, the specific title of the new game, and actual measured loading times are all things the thread itself doesn’t clarify, leaving it up to readers to judge how much of this to take at face value.

*This article is compiled as an excerpt and summary from the 5ch (Hardware & Industry (Geha)) thread “Zelda’s Aonuma: “We Deliberately Kept the Loading Screens”.”

  • Zelda Direct Merch: “You’re Buying It All, Right?” — 5ch Claps Back: “Ever Heard of the ‘Whoever Suggests It Does It First’ Rule?”

On the morning of September 9, 2026, Nintendo aired a Zelda Direct showcasing the remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and more, revealing a limited-edition Switch 2 console, Pro Controller, carrying case, and amiibo. On 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (“Geha”) board, a thread popped up grilling Nintendo fans praising the broadcast (commonly nicknamed “Nishi-kun” on the board) with: “If you’re praising it, you’re buying every single item shown, right?” This sparked comebacks like “Then did you buy everything shown at PlayStation’s State of Play too?”, turning into a back-and-forth where both fanbases mocked each other’s fandoms.

Background and key points of this debate

This “you praised the show, so you’d better buy everything in it” gambit is one of the recurring template threads that fires up on the Hardware/Industry board after every Nintendo Direct or Sony State of Play, and it never rises above baseless flame-bait — no real purchase data is ever actually involved. The “whoever brings it up first” comeback used in the thread is likewise a stock retort meaning “you do it yourself before demanding it of anyone else.” Because this thread included several replies using a slur for people with disabilities to describe the other side, those exchanges have been left out of this article. “Nishi-kun” is an established nickname on the board for Nintendo fans in general, not a reference to any specific individual.

  • Switch 2 ‘Ocarina of Time’ Priced at ¥8,980, Sparks Fierce Price Debate on 5ch

Nintendo has announced that the Switch 2 remake of “The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time” will be available as a digital download for 8,980 yen (tax included), releasing on November 5, 2026. On 5ch’s hardware/industry board, opinions split over whether that price is fair for a remake with roots going back through the N64 and 3DS versions, with posters repeatedly comparing it to Sony-camp title “FF7 Liberation” at 9,980 yen (roughly 30,000 yen for the full trilogy) and to Nintendo’s own new “Yoshi” title at 8,000 yen. The debate split between critics who felt only the graphics had been overhauled while the content stayed the same, and those who praised the smoother controls and rearranged soundtrack — with disagreement even over whether a full playthrough takes about 20 hours or more like 30-40.

It's a remake, so of course it costs this much.
And it doesn't leave the story unfinished either — that's just normal.

Charging 9,000 yen for a mere remake?
    That's just pathetic.

    Re: #3
FF7 Liberation is ¥9,980, you know? And for PS players who bought it around launch, it's a trilogy, so that's about ¥30,000 total lol.
What do you make of that? On top of that, you can't even play Rebirth without a PS5… What a wild era we live in, huh?
    6AnonymousSep 9, 2026 00:04
Why does something that's basically just a graphics upgrade cost about 9,000 yen?
The fields are still just as cramped, and you still get load screens entering towns and villages — that doesn't even clear the bare minimum bar.

Well, Breath of the Wild itself was pretty unusual for a Zelda game.
Up until then, Zelda was all about dungeons as the main focus, with traversal as just an extra.

“Ocarina of Time” is a landmark entry in the Zelda series, originally released on the NINTENDO64 in 1998, and was remade for 3DS in 2011 as “Ocarina of Time 3D.” This new Switch 2 version appears to be built on that 3DS release with an updated graphics overhaul, and opinions on the thread split between those who felt it was “just the 3DS version looking even nicer” and those who argued that “the improved combat feel and rearranged soundtrack don’t come across unless you actually play it yourself.” The FF7 Remake brought up in price comparisons is structured as a trilogy continuing from the PS4 version, with the final installment not yet released — the three games together will run close to 30,000 yen. Without knowing this, it’s easy to misread the simple “FF7 is more/less expensive” comparisons; in reality, this is about the total cost of a split-release strategy, not a straightforward one-to-one price comparison. On playtime too, the estimates from walkthrough sites (roughly 20-30 hours) clashed with the felt playtime depending on how thoroughly one plays (30-40 hours), so the “time versus price” debate kept going with different posters working from different assumptions.

  • Ocarina of Time Remake Character Models Draw ‘Creepy’ Backlash — 5ch: ‘Needlessly Realistic and Gross’

Images of character models believed to be from a remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time were posted to 5ch’s hardware/industry board (Geha), sparking a wave of “creepy” and “gross” reactions. Many commenters pointed out that Link and Sheik’s proportions and textures lean toward a realistic, live-action style, comparing them unfavorably to the stylized, doll-like models from the Dragon Quest VII remake. Others praised the “high quality” of the work, and opinions split sharply over whether a stylized or realistic look is more desirable.

Background and Key Points of Debate

The thread doesn’t make clear where the images originated or whether an official remake announcement has even been made, and based on the material here alone it’s impossible to tell whether these are official assets or unofficial cuts. The central point of contention was the differing degree of stylization across series entries: some commenters championed a toon-style approach like Breath of the Wild, while others felt this model’s more realistic texturing fell into “uncanny valley” territory. Many comparisons were drawn to the visuals of the Dragon Quest VII remake and Final Fantasy, and it’s easy to miss on a quick read that even within Nintendo and Square Enix titles, the thread showed no consistent standard for judging graphical style.

※This article is compiled and summarized from the 5ch (Hardware/Industry (Geha)) thread “[Sad News] Ocarina of Time Remake Modeling Is Just Plain Creepy“.

  • Why Doesn’t Ocarina of Time Go Open World? 5ch: “Not Even Close, It’s a Trash Game”

A thread on 5ch’s hardware/industry (Geha) board heated up over whether an Ocarina of Time remake should go open world. It started with criticism that the original’s field areas are flat and empty, splitting posters into a cautious camp who argued that going open world would mean “it’s no longer Ocarina of Time,” and a reform camp who countered that bold remakes—like Resident Evil RE2 or the FF7 Remake—are what remakes are for. Concrete points also came up, like the two-part structure of switching between child and adult eras, loading between areas, and the sparse enemy placement in the field.

It's exactly because it's a remake that it should change from the original — if it's the same as the original, you might as well just play the original.

Don't let them wing it on vibes like they did with FF7.
    46AnonymousSep 9, 2026 01:41
The Resident Evil remake thing is basically just turning painted backdrops into 3D, right?
Ocarina of Time already did that too.
Using that as an example to demand an open-world overhaul that changes the whole gameplay is off base — that's a completely different level of change.
    48AnonymousSep 9, 2026 01:42
    Re: #46
The Resident Evil remake has no fixed camera or tank controls ("radio-control" style movement) — the gameplay itself changed completely.
    50AnonymousSep 9, 2026 01:44

    60AnonymousSep 9, 2026 01:51
To begin with, Breath of the Wild didn't go open world just because they wanted open world — open world just happened to be the best fit for what they wanted to express.
Demanding Ocarina of Time go open world is missing the point.

Zelda is the one whose system is so complete it doesn't need a gameplay overhaul.

    Re: #64
Ocarina of Time does need an overhaul too — playing it now, it feels dated.

    84AnonymousSep 9, 2026 02:08
    Re: #64
Still, I think there's room to improve the puzzles and the controls.
I'd want the bow's stick-aim switched to gyro aim.
I'd also want jumping to be doable with a single button.
Though jumping would change the core gameplay, so if they want to keep changes to the content minimal,
that part might be a bit tricky.
    67AnonymousSep 9, 2026 01:57

    90AnonymousSep 9, 2026 02:14
    Re: #89
Not the whole game being open, but an open structure split into two parts, child and adult.

It doesn't have to be that way,
but if they did make it open world, that's what it would inevitably end up being.
    97AnonymousSep 9, 2026 03:06
Using fade-to-black transitions makes it easy to convey distance and time.
Open world has to express that through actual travel, which means you need to build huge connecting map areas.
They probably judged that would hurt the original's pacing.
    98AnonymousSep 9, 2026 03:09
    Re: #97
    More than that,
I think Nintendo just wanted to make the classic look pretty.
    Same with Star Fox —
they just want to do it with the best possible visuals right now.
There's probably no going further up from here anyway.
    105AnonymousSep 9, 2026 03:22
"We deliberately kept the loading screens, lol"
Why on earth would you do that
    109AnonymousSep 9, 2026 03:34
    Re: #105
Because in Ghost of Tsushima it loaded so fast you couldn't even read the tips.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The “Resident Evil RE2” remake was highly praised even after ditching the fixed camera and tank controls, while the “FF7” remake split opinion by shifting from turn-based to action combat — posters repeatedly cited these two as a yardstick for “how far bold changes should be allowed to go.” N64-era software tended to have simplified field areas due to hardware constraints, and the empty plains of Ocarina of Time, despite their size, were brought up as one example of this. On the other hand, going open world doesn’t just mean making things bigger — it means altering the original’s core structure itself, such as the fixed order of puzzle-solving or the child/adult switching mechanic. Where to draw the line between “improvement” and “turning it into a different game” is what split opinion, and that’s arguably the heart of this debate.

    Background and Talking Points

“Pomi” is one of the AA (ASCII art) characters that has long been a fixture of 5ch’s Newsspeed VIP board, and this thread followed the board’s traditional format in which a user posting under a specific kaomoji live-blogs their own activities. Based on comments in the thread, the gacha in question appears to be Fire Emblem Heroes (FEH); the thread recounts frustration with a system that only allows single pulls, along with the process of finally landing the target character on the 40th roll by using the “pity” system, where pulling a set number of times guarantees you the character you want. Opinions in the thread were split by resident, with some rooting for “Dietrich” and others for “Conan,” and notably the conversation never got into the rights and wrongs of gacha spending, staying instead a lighthearted chat about character preferences and pull luck. Note that a portion where the discussion veered off into a general tangent about in-game spending has been left out of this article.

Zelda Direct was a tight 30-minute broadcast built around a single new title, while State of Play ran two hours and covered dozens of titles — yet Zelda-related terms dominated the top of X (formerly Twitter) trends almost completely. Reports even surfaced claiming State of Play “didn’t even crack the top 30 trends.” In 5ch livestream threads, users expressed shock that broadcast scale and buzz didn’t line up at all. Some posts noted a similar pattern showed up in US trends too.

    It's too popular, man
    2AnonymousSep 8, 2026 23:35
Are you mocking State of Play for getting zero trending spots?
    23AnonymousSep 8, 2026 23:40
    Re: #2
Can't really blame people for mocking it

    Just the movie title card
Lego for like one second lol
    17AnonymousSep 8, 2026 23:38
Was there something like a ghost ship in it?

    Don't remember that
I vaguely remember Koume (a Zelda character) though

Pretty sure that's the Temple of Darkness

    Probably the Temple of Darkness
I remember it 'cause I died to the boss a bunch of times and rode the ship a few times too

    This gap in enthusiasm…
Why'd it turn out like this

    State of Play

    Zelda

Sony should've just turned off comments for State of Play 😭

State of Play was fun in its own way
Just from you guys roasting it, though lol
    54AnonymousSep 8, 2026 23:45
Godzilla Minus Zero had rotten timing
It went head-to-head and basically got buried in the trends
    56AnonymousSep 8, 2026 23:46
    Re: #54
Obvious or not, they should've steered clear of Zelda's timeslot

As a Godzilla fan who's been thinking "what happened to Japan?" ever since Shin Godzilla, this much is fine by me

    ■Zelda Direct
    ・30 minutes
    ・1 title

    ■State of Play
    ・2 hours
    ・Dozens of titles

No way it lost with numbers like that…

[Bad News] Zelda Direct commentary threads couldn't even burn through 3 threads… meanwhile State of Play finished 5
    https://krsw.5ch.io/test/read.cgi/ghard/1788878363/

Zelda Direct: 30 min, 3 threads
State of Play: 120 min, 5 threads

Stuff like this always ends up being the sticking point
    80AnonymousSep 8, 2026 23:51
Wait, did State of Play seriously not even make the top 30 trends? (´・ω・`)
    83AnonymousSep 8, 2026 23:52
    Re: #80
    Seriously, zero…
    Didn't even come close…

    Re: #80
A few terms did squeak in, but it never hit #1, and it never dominated the trends even for a moment

    Re: #80
    No way that's real
    Wait, what?
    91AnonymousSep 8, 2026 23:55
I mean, almost the entire top 30 is Zelda
    That's insane

This is what a genuinely popular game looks like

There's like an "are there even that many Zelda-related words" amount of them

The US trends look about the same

Guess all that MonsterVerse groundwork paid off
    119AnonymousSep 9, 2026 00:05
Navi's voice trending is honestly hilarious

Navi's voice >>> an unbeatable wall >>> State of Play

    That's basically what happened
    122AnonymousSep 9, 2026 00:06
    Re: #119
All of State of Play's two hours losing to just Navi's voice… come on 😭

Hey! lol Listen! lol (Navi's famous catchphrase)

    Leave them alone lmao
    140AnonymousSep 9, 2026 00:11
Zelda somehow became popular with casual gamers too at some point, huh

Gotta be Breath of the Wild. That's what really grew the fan base
    144AnonymousSep 9, 2026 00:13
    Re: #140
With BOTW it fully broke free of being a niche series and became a mainstream game
Before that the Zelda series never sold all that well
    147AnonymousSep 9, 2026 00:15
    Re: #140
Breath of the Wild was just on another level
A legit all-time classic, and that's when the series shot up to being a genuinely popular franchise, in name and in reality
    149AnonymousSep 9, 2026 00:15
Since they've got voice actors now, it wouldn't have been weird to include a voice actor interview
    151AnonymousSep 9, 2026 00:17
    Re: #149
Doing stuff like that is probably why State of Play sucks
    153AnonymousSep 9, 2026 00:17
    Re: #149
Nintendo Direct has never once done a voice actor interview though…
    160AnonymousSep 9, 2026 00:18
    Re: #149
You're saying that on purpose, right lol

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

“State of Play” is a broadcast Sony holds on an irregular basis, and this installment ran two hours covering a large number of titles, while Zelda Direct was a focused 30-minute broadcast built around a single new title. Going by broadcast length and number of titles alone, State of Play should have had the edge — yet Zelda-related terms dominated the top of X’s trends, and the thread has been buzzing with surprise at this reversal. That said, it’s worth noting that trending lists shift based on a mix of factors — regional differences, the momentum of live commentary, bot activity, and more — so this alone isn’t a clean, apples-to-apples popularity comparison between the two. There’s also the view that the series broke through to casual audiences after “Breath of the Wild,” a claim that lines up with actual sales growth and isn’t purely fans talking up their favorite.
