MARVEL Tōkon Concurrent Players Crash to Around 100 — Fans Fear the Game May Be Getting Shut Down

The story

The fighting game “MARVEL Tōkon,” published by a Sony subsidiary, has seen its concurrent player count crash to around 100, sparking discussion on the Japanese hardware/gaming-industry forum board. Developed by Arc System Works, the game reportedly had about 25,000 concurrent players right after launch, meaning the vast majority of its playerbase has dropped off in under two months. Posters were split on the cause: some blamed the mandatory PSN account linking, while others argued the game’s content itself simply didn’t land. With a season pass featuring additional characters planned through December 2027, some worried whether the service can keep running that long, or whether it will meet the same fate as “Concord,” which was pulled from sale and refunded shortly after launch.

Yep
8AnonymousSep 28, 2026 18:35
There's no way you're getting a real match anymore, right? lol
Probably a 10-minute wait
15AnonymousSep 28, 2026 18:38
Re: #8
The people still left are just doing friend matches at this point, random matchmaking's been a ghost town for a while
14AnonymousSep 28, 2026 18:37
People were already saying matches were impossible back when it was around 500 concurrent.
100 must be brutal 😭
16AnonymousSep 28, 2026 18:38
Re: #14
It was already unplayable at 500 and now it's down to a fifth of that……
26AnonymousSep 28, 2026 18:41
The game itself isn't even bad, but people are seriously avoiding it because of the forced PSN linking
32AnonymousSep 28, 2026 18:43
Re: #26
I mean, it's not like PS5 is buzzing either, so that's probably not it
35AnonymousSep 28, 2026 18:44
Re: #26
Seriously, this
Half — no, 80% Sony's fault
88AnonymousSep 28, 2026 19:17
Re: #26
If that were really the reason, the PS5 version would've sold fine
But it's not selling on PS5 either, so it has to be a problem with the game itself
27AnonymousSep 28, 2026 18:41
Wolverine's in bad shape too — isn't Sony gonna catch heat from Marvel?
28AnonymousSep 28, 2026 18:42
Re: #27
That means they've tanked two Marvel titles in a row
29AnonymousSep 28, 2026 18:42
It's fine, only over 99% of the userbase vanished within 2 months of launch
33AnonymousSep 28, 2026 18:43
Re: #29
That's honestly impressive
No other game has dropped this hard from 25k concurrent in just 2 months
37AnonymousSep 28, 2026 18:45
It's not just that the concurrent count is low — day one was around 25k, and it's kept bleeding players this fast the whole time

It's not that nobody's playing it — plenty of people DID play it properly, and then just disappeared 🥺
38AnonymousSep 28, 2026 18:46
Re: #37
That makes it even more hopeless lol
39AnonymousSep 28, 2026 18:46
All I remember is Deadpool clips flooding my feed nonstop.
They were funny at first, but they gradually got annoying, and after 2-3 of them you're sick of it.
Still, it seemed like it was getting some buzz — guess it's dropped off this much now.
Well, it's almost been 2 months, so maybe this is just how it goes
41AnonymousSep 28, 2026 18:47
Re: #39
Reviews were saying the same thing — fine the first time, but watch it enough times and it's just irritating
47AnonymousSep 28, 2026 18:51
Why'd the playerbase drop this much? It's made by Arc System Works, so the quality should be solid, right?
50AnonymousSep 28, 2026 18:52
Re: #47
"Ark" (a mocking nickname implying the studio is 'washed up') doesn't care about other companies' IPs, so they half-assed the balancing and now it's dead
54AnonymousSep 28, 2026 18:54
For better or worse, they made it with Arc's usual style, and it seems like people just didn't vibe with that style

I mean, this is a game Marvel fans buy, not Arc fans (´・ω・`)
55AnonymousSep 28, 2026 18:55
Re: #54
lol
Fair point honestly
92AnonymousSep 28, 2026 19:20
Re: #54
Weird that even Arc's own fans aren't buying it
60AnonymousSep 28, 2026 18:57
Marathon, Saros, Tōkon, Wolverine… what a miracle lineup
63AnonymousSep 28, 2026 18:58
Re: #60
The Four Horsemen of Shovelware, maybe?
69AnonymousSep 28, 2026 19:00
If it's still beating Hunter x Hunter, it's probably still fine
71AnonymousSep 28, 2026 19:02
Re: #69
Hunter was made by some minor studio
It's a title aimed at a Japanese audience

Marvel got released pretty much worldwide
and they poured a ton of money into it too
73AnonymousSep 28, 2026 19:04
Sounds like they've got a contract with Marvel, but will they really keep going once it drops to double digits?
74AnonymousSep 28, 2026 19:04
Re: #73
If it gets that far, it really does feel like they should just pull the plug
Honestly feels like they should stop even now
81AnonymousSep 28, 2026 19:10
Re: #73
It's either keep it running or fully refund everyone like Concord
They're still selling DLC promising 4 more characters by December 31, 2027
93AnonymousSep 28, 2026 19:20
Fighting games don't even need dedicated servers
There's no real reason to shut down the service
95AnonymousSep 28, 2026 19:22
Re: #93
This game pays Marvel a massive licensing fee every single month 🤣🤣🤣
103AnonymousSep 28, 2026 19:27
Re: #95
Wouldn't they still owe that even after shutting the service down?
113AnonymousSep 28, 2026 19:33
Re: #95 For a second I misread that as 'this game is crap'
104AnonymousSep 28, 2026 19:28
They've got updates scheduled through the season pass all the way to December 2027… is that actually gonna happen…?
107AnonymousSep 28, 2026 19:30
Re: #104
Concord's grand finale, the sequel
121AnonymousSep 28, 2026 19:41
Re: #104
Which is the lesser evil — keep running it, or refund everyone?

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

MARVEL Tōkon is a PS5 fighting game published by a Sony subsidiary studio and developed by Arc System Works, a developer with a strong track record in the fighting genre. It reportedly had around 25,000 concurrent players right after launch, but by the time of this thread, that number had crashed to the low hundreds in under two months. This drop was the main point of debate among posters, with some pointing to the mandatory PSN account linking, and others arguing that since even the PS5 version’s sales were weak, the problem must lie with the game itself. Another Sony-published Marvel title, “Wolverine,” has also reportedly struggled, and several posts noted that this marks two Marvel titles in a row running into trouble. With a season pass featuring additional characters planned through December 2027, attention is now on whether the service can keep running that long, or whether it will meet an ending similar to “Concord,” which was pulled from sale and refunded shortly after launch.
