  • Yuji Horii Confirms ‘Dragon Quest XII’ Is in the Works, Timed to New ‘Portopia’ Announcement

Game creator Yuji Horii commented on X on September 10 about the announcement of “Portopia Serial Murder Case II: Burial of Oblivion,” and in the same post revealed that “Dragon Quest XII: Reaching Beyond the Dream” is currently “in production to rave reviews” (絶賛制作中 — a phrase normally used to praise something already earning acclaim, oddly applied here to an unfinished game). The original 1983 “Portopia Serial Murder Case” is a legendary title that Horii single-handedly directed, wrote, programmed, and illustrated. On 5channel, though, the threads were dominated less by excitement for the new game than by nitpicking over that “rave reviews” phrasing, unease about the change in character designer, and general grumbling about the series’ recent direction.

On September 10, Yuji Horii commented on X about “Zoku Portopia Renzoku Satsujin Jiken: Bokyaku no Maiso” (Portopia Serial Murder Case II: Burial of Oblivion), which had just been announced during a Nintendo Direct, and then revealed that “Dragon Quest XII: Reaching Beyond the Dream” is currently in production, “to great acclaim.”

In 1983, Horii handled not just the director’s role but also the scenario, programming, and graphics for “Portopia Serial Murder Case” on the PC-6001/mkII computer of the era. “Portopia Serial Murder Case” has since been ported to a variety of platforms.

'In production to rave reviews' (絶賛制作中)

Strictly speaking, some point out it's odd to 'praise' something for merely 'being in the process of being made,' but nowadays the phrase has become a fixed expression used to convey momentum and anticipation — basically meaning 'we're giving it everything we've got' or 'work is progressing smoothly.'

The brilliance of Yuji Horii's scenario writing:
the detective you're controlling turns out to be the culprit,
you can see the final castle across the water from the very first town
    — I suspect that was partly just storage limitations, but
pulling stunts like that in the dawn of the industry
set the bar impossibly high for everyone who came after.

    Re: #111
If Horii's not involved, it's not really Dragon Quest anymore, is it. And here I am, a grown man now, who was still in elementary school when DQ1 came out.

Background and key points of this discussion

“Portopia Serial Murder Case” was released in 1983 for the PC-6001/mkII, a work Yuji Horii single-handedly directed, wrote, programmed, and illustrated, and it has since been ported to numerous platforms. The Famicom version, however, has never been ported to any other system, and several thread posts lamented that fact. Opinions in the thread split mainly along two lines: whether the phrase “in production to rave reviews” (絶賛制作中) was appropriate wording, and how credit for the series should be divided among its creators. On the first point, some argued it felt odd to use a word normally reserved for “praise” to describe something merely “in progress,” while others countered that it has simply become a fixed idiom by now. On the second, while Horii sits at the core of the series’ scenario writing, posters pointed to the division of labor with composer Koichi Sugiyama and character designer Akira Toriyama, as well as the major early contributions of Koichi Nakamura — a reminder that the series has never been the work of one person alone. It’s also worth noting that this announcement was limited to confirming the game “is in production”; it made no mention of a release date or concrete progress, so readers shouldn’t read more into it than that.

  • Switch 2’s TV Mode Gets VRR Output Support, Enabled via Dock Update

A system update for the Nintendo Switch 2 has added support for VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) output during TV Mode. The feature outputs video at a refresh rate matched to the game’s rendering when both the software and the TV support it, and turning it on also requires an update to the Switch 2 dock itself. On 5ch, some compared this to how the PS5 added similar support a while after its own launch, and opinions differed on just how many home TVs actually support it. An update item letting players use other controllers even during Handheld Mode Boost also drew attention.

VRR output during TV Mode is now supported.

When both the software and the TV support it, video is output at a refresh rate matched to the game’s processing.

Enabling this feature requires an update to the Nintendo Switch 2 dock.

    113AnonymousSep 10, 2026 15:06
I heard VRR output wasn't possible due to spec limitations, but it actually works? Impressive

Background and key points of this topic

VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) is a technology that varies a display’s refresh rate to match a game’s rendering frame rate, reducing stutter and tearing, and it has been spreading mainly among HDMI 2.1-generation TVs. Because the Switch 2 outputs to a TV through its dock, VRR support specifically in TV Mode was seen as a technical hurdle worth watching, and it’s easy to overlook that the feature only kicks in once the software, the TV, and the dock all support it together. In the thread, comparisons came up with how the PS5 added VRR support some time after its own launch, but the exact timing and later fixes are based on posters’ memories, and 5ch commentary alone doesn’t guarantee the facts are accurate. Opinions were also split on how widespread VRR-capable TVs really are — some said “almost all of them do 4K120Hz these days,” others said “without a compatible display the benefit is minimal” — with views varying by price range and manufacturer, and no clear consensus emerged.

  • Hideo Kojima’s ‘PHYSINT’: Sony Bails, Xbox Steps In — 5ch Reacts: ‘Wait, What?!’

Hideo Kojima revealed on X that in mid-June this year, Sony (SIE) notified him it was “canceling the project” for PHYSINT, which was then in development. After spending three months searching for a new partner, he announced that development would continue with Xbox on board. Sony, for its part, issued a statement saying it had “made the decision to step back from the PHYSINT collaboration.” On the thread, opinions split over how well Death Stranding 2 actually sold, given its predecessor’s sales figures and production budget, with posters also linking the split to Sony’s recent shift away from its heavy focus on big-budget blockbuster titles.

As just announced in an official release from Kojima Productions, in mid-June this year we suddenly received notice from SIE that they were "canceling the PHYSINT project," which was then in development. PHYSINT is an important project both to me and to Kojima Productions, so over these past three months I've been searching relentlessly for a "new partner" to make sure it could continue no matter what. After consulting with people across many different fields and pushing negotiations forward, we've decided to team up again with XBOX as a partner who shares our "vision for the future." PHYSINT, our next-generation "espionage action" title, is still in development, so please don't worry.

    76AnonymousSep 10, 2026 12:42
    Re: #63
For a game that size, 2 million is a straight-up flop. Former PlayStation exec Yoshida even told overseas media, 'With labor costs and everything else up, making a game the same scale as a PS4 title today would cost twice as much. A first-party AAA title needs to sell 10 million copies just to break even.' Even if Death Stranding sits somewhere between AA and AAA, 4-5 million should be the bare minimum — especially with all that money blown on movie-star casting.
    85AnonymousSep 10, 2026 12:46
    Re: #63
If it were some super-niche title, 2 million would be god-tier. But for mainline 3D Mario, that'd be an instant 'dead franchise' verdict. And for GTA, it'd basically be the end of the world — even 20 million would get called a failure there. In the end, whether a sales number counts as a pass or fail depends entirely on the expectations riding on that specific game, so calling 2 million a 'pass' is really just underselling how far it fell short. If Sony really cut ties, that means even they don't see (Dis)Stranding — a mocking mangled nickname posters use for the game — as a success.

Business is genuinely doing well, no question. But that's thanks to in-game spending on live-service titles like Apex, Fortnite, Genshin, and Star Rail — it's just that where the revenue comes from has changed.

Games used to be made and sold for profit, but now PlayStation just has to be the platform, and the microtransaction money pours in on its own. In that world, there's no need to force through an expensive game.

Does it help if I put it this way: whether 2 million counts as a success depends on the specific game? Sony dropped (Dis)Stranding, so obviously they don't consider 2 million a success.

    Re: #63
Using a comparable scale to Kojima, Nagoshi's Like a Dragon (Yakuza) series is said to run about ¥15 billion in budget, so let's use that as a reference. Assuming a ¥8,000 retail price and factoring in distribution margins, royalties, and manufacturing costs, that leaves roughly ¥4,000 profit per copy.

At that rate, you'd need to sell 3.75 million copies just to avoid a loss. And merely avoiding a loss isn't success, so you'd want another million copies on top of that for actual profit.

So I'd guess 4.75 million was the bare minimum Sony was hoping for.

Background and Key Points of Discussion

PHYSINT is an espionage-action project from Kojima Productions and Sony (SIE) announced in 2021, though development is said to have been underway even before that. As posters in the thread point out, this contract termination is being tied to Sony’s recent overall stance — dissolving Japan Studio, shutting down Bluepoint Games, and generally pulling back from one-off blockbuster productions in favor of shifting its focus toward microtransaction revenue from live-service titles like Apex Legends and Genshin Impact. The main flashpoint was how to judge Death Stranding 2’s performance: opinions in the thread split over whether its announced 2-million-unit sales figure should be read as “reasonable” or as a “flop.” Part of the backdrop here is an industry-wide shift in which the break-even sales threshold has climbed sharply due to soaring production costs for big-budget games, making it hard to judge profitability from raw sales numbers alone. Note that the estimate claiming “5 million copies were needed” and the posts suggesting Kojima misused other projects’ budgets during his Konami days are both unsubstantiated speculation and should not be taken as fact.

  • Sony Showcase Backlash: Tokon Panned, Discs Axed, Kojima Exits — 5ch Says It’s ‘More Shocking Than a Nintendo Direct’

A thread went up on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (“Geha”) board about Sony’s showcase. According to the thread, a string of unfavorable topics all broke on the same day: a sharp drop in ratings for Tokon, a scaled-back rollout for physical disc versions, the departure of the ‘Persona’ series producer, and Hideo Kojima’s exit from his project. Posters argued the news was more ‘shocking’ than any Nintendo Direct announcement, with some predicting the backlash overseas would be even worse — the thread filled up with sarcastic back-and-forth.

    Re: #113
That was just a troll post.
It was a joke, and then this massive genuine disaster actually happened.

    Background and key points

On the Hardware/Industry (“Geha”) board, posts that pit Sony and Nintendo’s announcements against each other to stir up rivalry are a regular occurrence, and this time too, Tokon’s reception, the handling of disc versions, and the movements of well-known staff are all being framed as ‘the announcement that was supposed to crush the Nintendo Direct.’ At the same time, some posts in the thread point out that the earlier rumor of a ‘major announcement’ was itself just a joke meant to bait PlayStation fans, making it hard to tell from the thread alone how much is fact and how much is just needling. The source of attached images like the stock chart also can’t be verified from the text, so it’s safest to treat the numbers and rumors here as unverified reference material rather than primary sources.

  • Torneko’s Great Adventure Remaster Draws Complaints Over Clunky Controls — Some Steam Players Demand Refunds

A remaster of “Torneko’s Great Adventure: Mysterious Dungeon” was released on Steam and other platforms, and this thread kicked off with a post from someone who requested a refund over the poor controls. Specific complaints piled up one after another: the diagonal-movement settings, stretches where the player is locked out of input during animations, and a bug where pressing a button too early while descending stairs makes the character swing an attack the instant the next floor starts. Posters argued this wasn’t a case of “it’s just an old game” but rather problems newly introduced by this particular port, speculated that original developer Chunsoft wasn’t involved this time, weighed in on the 3,500 yen price tag, and debated Square Enix’s hit-or-miss track record with remakes.

Torneko’s controls are so bad I sent my first-ever Steam refund request.

    Just one example:
The diagonal-movement setting is garbage — you can switch between 3 options, but all three are trash
You keep getting locked out of input during sound effects and animations
If you're holding a button during the stairs-descending animation, it registers as a buffered input and you end up swinging an attack the instant the next floor starts
    stuff like that
These clearly aren't inconveniences from it being an old game — they're new issues added by this port

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

“Torneko’s Great Adventure: Mysterious Dungeon” is the title that launched Chunsoft’s (now Spike Chunsoft) Mysterious Dungeon series, and this remaster is believed to have been developed in-house by Square Enix, with posters pointing out that Spike Chunsoft’s involvement appears minimal. What stands out is that the complaints aren’t just nostalgic grumbling — commenters cited concrete technical flaws, including the diagonal-movement implementation, stretches where the player can’t act during animations, and a bug where a buffered input during the stairs-descending animation triggers an attack the instant the next floor begins, and stated plainly that these are new issues added by this port rather than “inconveniences because it’s an old game.” At the same time, opinions in the thread were split on Square Enix’s remake and remaster track record — while titles like Trials of Mana and Romancing SaGa 2 are held in high regard, posters also noted an industry-wide sense that most of the company’s other efforts tend to get panned.

Pricing is set at 5,478 yen for the physical package, 4,378 yen for the digital download, and 2,970 yen for the Steam-only version. The announcement sparked a debate on 5ch over the very definition of a “kusoge” (crap game). Opinions on *Ikki* split right down the middle between its arcade original and its Famicom port, while many defended *The Mystery of Atlantis* and *Star Luster* as merely difficult, not broken.

The standard physical edition is priced at 5,478 yen, and the standard digital edition at 4,378 yen. The Steam version alone runs 2,970 yen.

I think even with today's online options and virtual console releases, playing together with friends at home back then made it feel different, so that's probably part of it lol

    Background and Talking Points

The term “kusoge” (crap game) took hold in the late Famicom era, originally describing titles that were clearly broken — games that glitched out or were unreasonably unfair. But in this thread, that very definition is what’s up for debate. Opinions on *Ikki* split between its arcade version and its Famicom port, while *The Mystery of Atlantis* and *Star Luster* drew a wave of pushback along the lines of “just difficult, not broken.” This reflects how, over the years, the label “crap game” broadened to lump together genuinely high-difficulty or unfair design with actual technical flaws like bugs and slowdown — and the thread’s arguments read as pushback against that conflation. There’s also a recurring point that “people who can’t clear a game just brand it a bad game,” highlighting how a player’s own lack of skill sometimes gets reframed as the game’s fault. One thing readers might miss: this release is a promotional product where Sunsoft itself is leaning into the “crap game” label for its own titles — the opinions on each game’s quality in this piece are strictly 5ch users’ personal takes, not an official admission that these are “crap games.”

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Geinou/Sports News+) thread “[Games] The original “crap game” returns! “Retro Game Selection 2,” featuring 4 titles including *Ikki* and *The Mystery of Atlantis*, announced for release.”

  • SIE Pulls Out of Kojima’s New Title ‘PHYSINT’ — Director Set to Sign With Xbox

PlayStation Studios announced it is withdrawing from its collaboration with KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS on the upcoming title PHYSINT. In response, Hideo Kojima took to X to explain the situation, revealing that SIE abruptly notified him of the project’s cancellation in mid-June this year, and that after three months of searching for a new partner, he has decided to team up with Xbox once again. On 5ch, the news sparked surprise that the split was SIE’s decision, along with speculation about the underlying causes — including sluggish sales of Death Stranding 2 and Kojima’s reported opposition to Sony’s plan to discontinue physical discs.

Update from PlayStation Studios: After careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to step back from our collaboration with KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS on the PHYSINT project.
We continue to hold tremendous respect for Hideo Kojima's vision for the game.

As just announced in KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS' official release, in mid-June this year we suddenly received notice from SIE that the "PHYSINT" project currently in development would be cancelled. PHYSINT is a project that matters deeply to both myself and KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS, and for the past three months we have been searching relentlessly for a "new partner" so we could carry on with it no matter what. After consulting with people from many different fields and advancing negotiations, we have decided to team up once again with XBOX, a partner who shares our "vision for the future." Please don't worry — development of PHYSINT, the next-generation "espionage action" title, is continuing.

Why though? 'Hideo Kojima x spy game' is about as sure a bet as it gets — a project that reeks of money and was more anticipated than Death Stranding.
From what I recall, Kojima himself wasn't even that motivated at first, and only got moving after fans worldwide kept demanding a spy game from him — this was a project born out of demand.
It's strange that they'd throw away the chance to release it as an exclusive or timed exclusive.

    So this is the reason

Background and key points of this story

PHYSINT is a new spy-action title that KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS announced in partnership with SIE, and it had been anticipated as the studio’s first original blockbuster since going independent. What stands out this time is that the announcement came from PlayStation Studios’ side, prompting questions on the thread like “if they were going to cut ties, why partner up in the first place?” According to Kojima’s own posts, the cancellation notice arrived in June this year, meaning the search for a new partner was already underway during the three months before the news went public. Multiple factors are being speculated on — sluggish sales, production costs, and differing stances on discontinuing physical discs among them — but neither SIE nor KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS has stated the specific reason behind the split. Some have pointed out parallels to Kojima’s earlier split from Konami, and the episode is being read by some as a sign of shifting dynamics between major publishers and creators.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Hardware/Industry (Geha)) thread “PlayStation: “After careful consideration, we’ve decided to step back from our collaboration with KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS on the PHYSINT project”“.

  • PS5 Price Cut to ¥55,000 Fails to Spark Sales — 5ch Debates Why

Even though the PS5 (Digital Edition) has been discounted to ¥55,000, some say it still isn’t selling as well as expected — sparking a lively debate on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (“Geha”) board about why. Posters pointed to the console’s large size, the fact that it isn’t portable, comparisons with the Nintendo Switch 2, and the lingering impression from the 2020–2021 scalping frenzy that “you can’t buy a PS5 anyway” due to shortages. Many argued that the real obstacle isn’t the price itself, but low public awareness and the lack of places to actually try it out.

Honestly, it's bizarre that anyone still thinks the PS5 is cutting-edge, high-performance hardware.
It's basically a fossil at this point.
Why would a 6-year-old console still count as the latest and greatest? The hardware hasn't advanced at all.

If someone said a 6-year-old smartphone was the newest, top-performing model, you'd think they were crazy, right?

Would anyone claim a 6-year-old iPhone 12 is on par with or better than the iPhone 18 announced yesterday?
    That would be 100% insane.
    Same logic here.
What's the point of buying old, low-performance hardware?

That Wolverine character is drawn as a middle-aged woman in the comics anyway — the movie version was just unrealistically gorgeous

Background and key points of this discussion

Since its 2020 launch, the PS5’s price in Japan has been revised several times due to the chip shortage and a weak yen, and ¥55,000 counts as one of the lower price points in the console’s history. Meanwhile, the Nintendo Switch 2, released in 2025, has been rapidly gaining market share thanks to its hybrid handheld/console design and major hit titles, and it repeatedly came up as a point of comparison in the thread. Posters also noted that the severe shortages and scalping problems of 2020–2021 left a lasting impression that “you just can’t buy a PS5,” and that this memory still seems to be affecting purchasing behavior even after the price cut. That said, it’s worth keeping in mind that the thread reflects anonymous-forum impressions and opinions, not actual sales data.

※This article is compiled and summarized from the 5ch (Hardware/Industry, aka “Geha”) thread “Japan-only PS5 Digital Edition at ¥55,000 — here’s why it’s not selling.”

  • Games Writer Kawamura Narihiro: “Nintendo Direct Leaves Fans Hanging Again by Withholding Its Biggest Blockbusters”

Yahoo! News gaming contributor Kawamura Narihiro has published a piece on Nintendo’s latest Direct presentation. While praising the strong lineup of announcements — including Portopia Serial Murder Case and Metroid — he called the absence of any brand-new entries in massive franchises like Mario or Super Smash Bros. a letdown. On 5ch’s hardware/industry board, this take drew attention because users pointed out Kawamura hadn’t published a similar reaction piece for Sony’s concurrent State of Play, prompting accusations that he only shows enthusiasm for Nintendo. Others pushed back on the “letdown” framing, noting that the newly revealed Kirby title trended worldwide.

    Expert commentary

Titles like Portopia Serial Murder Case and Metroid genuinely surprised even me, and the lineup was varied enough to reach both core and casual players. With X’s trending topics flooded with “Nintendo Direct” and related keywords (titles), it seems plenty of people came away satisfied.

That said, if you were hoping for brand-new entries in the franchises that represent Nintendo’s public face — like Mario or Smash Bros. — this may well have felt like a letdown. Stock markets and business media, which favor short-term results and predictable strategy, could judge this harshly. That’s arguably the price of carrying such massive franchises: expectations are always sky-high.

    State of Play:
"Bet there won't be any decent games anyway"
    => Yep, called it.

    Nintendo Direct:
    "C'mon, gimme Mario or Smash…"
    => "Wait, nothing?! So disappointing."

    Isn't that basically the difference?
Nobody expects anything from State of Play to begin with.

Well sure — unlike Smash Bros., which died after Nintendo fanboys hyped it into the ground, Kirby's getting back-to-back releases with Air Riders too.

    Background and points of contention

Kawamura Narihiro is a contributor to Yahoo! News’s “Expert” program, a writer who regularly covers gaming industry topics. Expert articles are published as the individual writer’s personal opinion, and operational details — like whether comments are enabled — are largely invisible to readers; in this thread too, whether it was his own decision remained pure speculation. The real point of contention wasn’t the Direct’s content itself, but the comparison to the fact that Kawamura hadn’t published a similar piece about Sony’s “State of Play,” with opinions split between reading this as “using Nintendo as his only target for criticism” versus “there simply wasn’t anything to write about.” Some posts also cited the previous day’s stock price change, but that’s purely one poster’s own interpretation — the article itself doesn’t actually analyze the stock market’s reaction, a distinction readers could easily conflate.

  • Persona 4R and Persona 6 Announced for Switch 2 — Fans Say ‘Guess I Don’t Need a PS5 Now’

Following the announcement of Nintendo Switch 2 versions of “Persona 4 Reload” and the latest entry “Persona 6,” X (formerly Twitter) was flooded with comments like “Now I don’t have to buy a PS5.” A thread on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry board picked up on the reaction, with posters debating whether they could think of any PS5-exclusive games worth owning, and whether the Switch 2 version — arriving later — might actually outsell the PS5 version. Some brought up how the delayed Switch 2 port of “Persona 3 Reload” underperformed, fueling a lively discussion.

Even Persona 4 and 6, which people said would 'never come,' are coming now — PlayStation's role just keeps shrinking.
Sure there's stuff like frame rate differences, but how much of that gorgeous fidelity PlayStation keeps chasing do players even want?
Strong first-party IP, good sales, so third parties want Switch releases too — Nintendo really is strong.
No real exclusive IP left, consumers don't care, and whatever used to be good about it is gone — PlayStation's role ends with the PS5. Thanks for your service ✨.

    Exactly this (´・ω・`)
They're not console-war fanboys (ゲハ信者), so it's not that they hate PlayStation
they just don't have games they want to play
I said the same thing to Xbox (箱) over and over: 【Western games basically don't sell in Japan at all — the only way forward is more Japanese games】【Normal people don't care about resolution or fps — what matters is whether it's actually fun to play】

Up until now, Nintendo hardware wasn't powerful enough to run the latest third-party titles, so PlayStation sold itself on that difference — but this is the first generation where the latest titles are going multiplatform, and at this rate PlayStation's really going to get eaten alive by the Switch 2
    36AnonymousSep 10, 2026 05:31

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

The Persona series has long had close ties to PlayStation, but the Switch 2 version of the much-discussed “Persona 3 Reload” arrived as a delayed port released well after launch, and reportedly struggled commercially. In the thread, this precedent fueled comments arguing that “delayed ports don’t sell,” countered by others pointing out that “this time multiplatform release was planned from the start, so the situation is different” — opinions were split. It was also noted that, at current domestic prices, the Switch 2 is in some cases more expensive than the PS5, a reversal of the earlier price gap between the PS4 and the original Switch. Some also pointed out that the series lineup was overhauled starting with Persona 3, creating a divide between the fanbases of 3 and of 4/5. Note that some posts in the thread contained remarks mocking individual posters, so those replies have been excluded from this article.
