Wolverine Gets 28% Off on Amazon Just Two Weeks After Launch — 5ch: “That Was Fast!”

From our other sites

The story

The PS5 game Marvel’s Wolverine, released on September 15, 2026, saw a 28% price cut on Amazon barely two weeks after launch. Rakuten Books soon followed suit with the same discount. On a 5ch thread in the hardware/industry (“Geha”) board, posters reacted with shock at how fast the price drop came — “That was way too fast a call!” — while others predicted it would soon end up in bargain-bin sales or New Year’s grab bags, and voiced concern over whether it could still hit its first-year sales target. Discussion of what’s driving the discount touched on inventory levels and the used-game market, turning the thread into more than just a price-drop report.

Probably gonna get even cheaper — only sold 20,000 copies and the sell-through rate's stuck in the green zone (a low tier on sales-tracking charts).
4AnonymousSep 29, 2026 15:50
Feels like in a few years this'll get lumped in with The Bouncer — "why did anyone treat this like a triple-A masterpiece?"
5AnonymousSep 29, 2026 15:51
That was way too fast a call! ( ・`д´)
8AnonymousSep 29, 2026 15:52
Who's dumb enough to buy this at full price now?
28AnonymousSep 29, 2026 16:08
Re: #8
It's exactly because there was no shortage of suckers buying it right away that we ended up here!
11AnonymousSep 29, 2026 15:53
It's a shit game that'll eventually be a ¥500 bargain-bin coin anyway,
but Amazon sure moved fast on that discount! 👺

Re: #11
Even ¥500 is too much, lol
They'll just be handing out codes for free.
12AnonymousSep 29, 2026 15:53
Still too pricey.
By year's end it'll hit the bargain cart, or come New Year it'll get stuffed into one of those depre— I mean, "lucky bag" grab bags.

Re: #1
Garbage that cost ¥50 billion to make.

They could've funded PHYSINT with that 🤭
16AnonymousSep 29, 2026 15:55
In six months they'll be handing out flimsy paper download-code slips for free.
If you're fine with that,

go ahead and buy it now.
17AnonymousSep 29, 2026 15:57
Not budging on the sales charts at all, lol
18AnonymousSep 29, 2026 15:57
Given the stock situation it'll drop even further, so don't panic-buy yet.
21AnonymousSep 29, 2026 16:02
Even if it drops more, I still don't want it though.
23AnonymousSep 29, 2026 16:03
And then there were none who bought it at full price on launch day ever again…
25AnonymousSep 29, 2026 16:06
Well, guess that's just how it goes in Japan.
Wonder how it's actually selling in the US and elsewhere.
26AnonymousSep 29, 2026 16:07
It'll probably keep dropping every week.
The game of chicken begins.
29AnonymousSep 29, 2026 16:08
The real fun starts once it's cheaper than a fried-chicken bento box.
31AnonymousSep 29, 2026 16:09
Thought this was a TEMU listing for a second —
turns out it wasn't.
39AnonymousSep 29, 2026 16:17
Re: #31
The quality's TEMU-tier though
34AnonymousSep 29, 2026 16:12
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!
35AnonymousSep 29, 2026 16:13
They'll probably just give it away eventually.
Though I wouldn't want it even for free.
50AnonymousSep 29, 2026 16:26
Re: #35
If the rumored first-year target of 6 million units is real, Sony will hand this thing out by any means necessary.
Selling it the normal way clearly isn't going to move the numbers anymore.
36AnonymousSep 29, 2026 16:14
Wolverine's starting to look like an abandoned cat.
37AnonymousSep 29, 2026 16:14
Beekane (nickname for another disappointing game) ended up 70% off.
Wait this one out until it gets down there too.
38AnonymousSep 29, 2026 16:15
Already being dumped at fire-sale prices?
Wait, when did this even launch again?
45AnonymousSep 29, 2026 16:22
Why buy it when you can play free games on PC instead?
46AnonymousSep 29, 2026 16:24
GEO (a used-game retailer) has already dropped its buyback price for Wolverine by ¥2,000 just two weeks after launch,
which points to serious oversupply of new copies, plus copies that did sell getting flipped straight back in as trade-ins —
overall, turning into dead stock looks unavoidable at this point.
47AnonymousSep 29, 2026 16:24
Honestly the game itself is such low quality I wouldn't want it even for ¥500.
49AnonymousSep 29, 2026 16:26
Stuff like this makes me kind of get why they'd want to ditch physical discs.

If just those 20,000 physical copies keep cycling through the used market, it'll only hurt sales further.

Then again, if there'd been no physical version from the start, people probably wouldn't have bought it at all — so revenue ends up about the same either way.
53AnonymousSep 29, 2026 16:27
Re: #49
Get rid of discs and it's way easier to control pricing even on a shit game.
62AnonymousSep 29, 2026 16:33
Rakuten Books is following Amazon's lead too —
now selling shit-game Wolverine at 28% off!
That was fast! 👺

64AnonymousSep 29, 2026 16:34
Re: #62
Rakuten Books and Amazon are definitely watching each other, right?
72AnonymousSep 29, 2026 16:39
Shitny (mocking nickname for Sony): "Please! If we don't sell 6 million units Marvel's gonna drop us — everybody buyyyyy, pleeeease!!!!! 😭"

Isn't that just pathetic?
76AnonymousSep 29, 2026 16:42
Re: #72
It's probably around 1 million units by now.
At this rate they'd seriously need to print codes, fake the "downloads," and just burn the discs to hit quota.
This is literally the Reiwa-era E.T. (the infamous Atari cartridge landfill disaster) all over again.
80AnonymousSep 29, 2026 16:43
Sony's honestly got to be past the point where they should pull out of the games business.
The massive losses piling up since Concord look pretty dire.
83AnonymousSep 29, 2026 16:46
Re: #80
Even a super rough estimate — ¥5,000 a unit times 5 million units — comes to a ¥25 billion extraordinary loss.
93AnonymousSep 29, 2026 17:12
PlayStation games are known for crashing in price fast, but isn't this way too fast even so?
95AnonymousSep 29, 2026 17:16
Re: #93
There's a legend for this: New Gundam Breaker, whose demo was so awful it set off a wave of pre-order cancellations — a panicked Amazon slapped a 46%-off discount on it on launch day itself…

Background and Talking Points

This price cut made waves precisely because of how quickly it followed launch. The thread cited rumors of a 6-million-unit first-year sales target and a ¥50 billion development budget, but both figures are unconfirmed hearsay, not verified official numbers. On the speed of the price drop, some posters suspected physical copies were flowing straight back into the used market, while others noted it could simply be a routine post-launch sale like any other year. Opinions in the thread were split on whether the discount reflects oversupply or is just standard promotion, and some linked it to worries about Sony’s game division performance — though that connection is speculation from thread participants, not something backed by financial results.
