The story
Microsoft has officially launched “Discs to Digital” today, a program that lets owners trade in their physical discs for digital copies, and Sega titles — previously excluded — have now been added to the lineup. The program works even on already-supported Xbox One consoles, meaning the only major third parties still not on board are Square Enix and Bandai Namco. On 5ch’s hardware/industry threads, discussion centered on why so many third parties agreed to license their games for this, and why Sony isn’t doing something similar.
Just insert your physical disc and get a digital copy in return (works on Xbox One consoles too)
Sega games, previously unsupported, are now included
That leaves only Square Enix and Bandai Namco among major publishers still not participating

What people said
It's mainly about Xbox One titles, which did have physical distribution
One was only "better" by comparison — feels like physical releases petered out somewhere around Halo 5, into Halo 6
"Normal," huh, "normal"…
In Japan it fell apart once Happinet pulled out of distribution
They can't double-dip and resell it twice anymore
The "crap box's" share is so low and everyone knows it's going away next gen, so they probably figure nothing they do matters at this point
If it were a market where double-dip resales actually worked, sure, they'd do that — but since it's not selling anyway, even one yen from MS beats nothing
Probably because they can feel Sony's influence slipping — the "goodwill money" well is running dry and there's less cash to hand out
PS4 and PS5 discs don't have individual identifiers recorded on them, so there's actually no way for Sony to copy this 🙄
That's literally all I want
Cra-cra-CRAZY TAXI THREEEEEEE!!!
Halo effectively ended at 3, didn't it
Well yeah, nobody actually owns physical Xbox discs
It's a weekday morning though
If they did that, it'd be god-tier
There's talk that MS might do this for older titles too
Well, actually, it seems they're going to support it after all
Pretty impressive, right
They're doing something completely different from Sony here
Sony is ending updates/patches for PS3 software in July 2027
They say they'll keep some support going for a while after, but since they're shutting down the servers, it's effectively unsupported
is finally going to see the light of day…
I'll admit I did press the eject button every now and then just to check it still worked lol
Sometimes I get the urge to play old games and boot up a 360 shooter or two
The prediction is that Xbox will have the edge next generation
Even overseas fanboys apparently took a hit from Sony dropping discs
Must be tough being a hype-man in the "trash box" (derogatory Xbox nickname) crowd
Nobody actually said this would lead to it catching on though?
This is exactly the kind of thing Sony — who's out here killing physical discs — should be leading on
Guess it's just that they can't double-dip and squeeze customers twice if they do?
Well, they don't have a PC or cloud ecosystem like Microsoft does
There's no benefit for Sony in pushing this
Sonyyyy doesn't put serials on its discs
That's why, when this MS program first came out, they said some nonsense about how once you get the license you could resell it endlessly
Nah, this is obviously a move toward going disc-less, however you look at it
Unlike Xbox One and later, those discs don't have unique IDs, so there's nothing to be done about it right now
Just rebuy them during a sale, problem solved
This is just a byproduct of laying the groundwork for that
No idea what this guy's even saying
Hm? Show me a source that says MS is paying for this.
Re: #94
MS is terrifying (sarcasm)
Oh, so it's outsold Forza now?
Background and Key Points of Debate
Discs to Digital works by reading a unique identifier burned into the disc to verify ownership and then granting the matching digital copy — a mechanism that, as posters in the thread pointed out, makes it technically difficult to bring original Xbox and Xbox 360 titles on board, since those use a different (or nonexistent) identifier scheme. Meanwhile, PlayStation discs don’t carry the same kind of identifier, which is part of why Sony reportedly can’t easily roll out a similar program. As for why so many third parties agreed to license their titles, one view in the thread held that “if you can’t make money on the secondhand market anyway, it’s better for the revenue to go to the developer instead.” Opinions were split on whether the program is really a push toward a disc-less future or, conversely, a way to add value to physical discs and prolong their life — no clear consensus emerged.
