  • FF7 Remake ‘Complete Edition’ Priced at ¥77,777 — 5ch Reacts: “That’s Too Damn Expensive lol”

Square Enix has announced that the “Complete Edition” of the Final Fantasy VII Remake series will go on sale on April 8, 2027, for ¥77,777. On 5ch’s hardware/industry board, the price sparked a wave of shocked reactions like “That’s too damn expensive lol” and “That’s got an extra digit on it.” Discussion centered on the price gap with the separately announced digital trilogy set (¥11,330), speculation that the bundled limited-edition card could resell for tens of thousands of yen on the secondary market, and inconsistencies with the company’s previous stance on DLC — all fueling debate over whether the price and sales approach are justified.

    Too damn expensive lol
Cracking me up. It's not worth that much.
    5AnonymousSep 3, 2026 23:49
Are the cards really going to be worth that much… are they?
    96AnonymousSep 4, 2026 00:22
    Re: #5
    Could be scary high, honestly.
The FF-collab MTG cards are pretty popular — setting aside outliers like the Chocobo cards with only a handful in existence worldwide, Cloud and Sephiroth cards easily go for around ¥50,000.
This time it's new artwork, the art quality looks really good, and they probably won't print many.
I'd guess it easily clears ¥100,000.
Could even hit ¥1,000,000 if things get out of hand (´・ω・`)
    8AnonymousSep 3, 2026 23:50
Even the diehard fans won't buy this. How full of themselves can they be?
They genuinely seem to think they're a top-tier player in the industry.
    9AnonymousSep 3, 2026 23:51
The least they could do is include the full soundtrack…
    10AnonymousSep 3, 2026 23:51
You guys kept saying "there'll surely be a cheap 3-game set," so I waited for it — and THIS is what we get!?
That's got an extra digit on it.
    11AnonymousSep 3, 2026 23:51
If that's really all that's included, this price is probably about right, no?
Though who knows how well it'll actually sell.
    12AnonymousSep 3, 2026 23:52
Oh, so it's a bundle with a PS5 console and the trilogy?

    …wait, it's not!?
    16AnonymousSep 3, 2026 23:52
Well, it's marginally better than that bicycle from Wilds, I guess (a jab at Monster Hunter Wilds' criticized paid bicycle-mount DLC).
    18AnonymousSep 3, 2026 23:53
    LOL
This company has genuinely turned into a joke.
    20AnonymousSep 3, 2026 23:53
Everyone expected them to release a 3-game set, but these days in the gaming industry you also have to brace for them pulling something like re-releasing an upgraded edition of the still-unreleased third Remake game too.
    25AnonymousSep 3, 2026 23:55
Now that I think about it, there were quite a few people who said they'd buy it if a 3-game set came out.

I… I don't recall saying that… (the classic evasive "I have no memory of that" line)

I want to give myself credit for thinking, "Even for a set of the older games, ¥7,777 seems too cheap."
    53AnonymousSep 4, 2026 00:01
    Re: #44
Same, I misread it too. I thought, "Wait, a 3-game set for under ¥8,000? Is Square Enix okay?" Turns out I was wrong — these guys are NOT okay.
    49AnonymousSep 4, 2026 00:01
Do the MTG cards only come with the expensive set?
    56AnonymousSep 4, 2026 00:03
    Re: #49
Nope, they come with the standard edition too.

Which is also ¥10,000, by the way.

    68AnonymousSep 4, 2026 00:06
Come on, for the one that's almost ¥80,000 they could at least make it a full game card instead of a key card (a download-code-only card rather than one with the actual game data).
    107AnonymousSep 4, 2026 00:27
    Re: #68
If they used an actual 128GB game card, that alone would cost around ¥15,000.
    71AnonymousSep 4, 2026 00:07
They said the third game would ship complete with no DLC, and yet everything about this is garbage.
That Zack figure is completely unnecessary too.
    80AnonymousSep 4, 2026 00:11
    Re: #71
Actually, more recently they've been talking about DLC for it too.
    74AnonymousSep 4, 2026 00:08
I just saw a headline saying "Complete Edition release confirmed" — was that referring to this price? Is there possibly no regular-priced Complete Edition at all?
    87AnonymousSep 4, 2026 00:16
    Re: #74
A plain digital 3-game set has been announced separately.
    It's ¥11,330.
Since Revelations (the third game) alone is ¥9,900, this set effectively lets you get Remake and Rebirth for ¥1,430 combined.
    77AnonymousSep 4, 2026 00:10
    It's over! 77777!
    82AnonymousSep 4, 2026 00:12
    Re: #77
Even the thread number is 77!
    85AnonymousSep 4, 2026 00:13
The turnaround from Rebirth to Revelations feels awfully fast.
Fast enough that I'm starting to suspect they deliberately scaled back the content from what was originally planned because sales weren't good.
    90AnonymousSep 4, 2026 00:17
    Re: #85
They learned the hard way with Rebirth that the longer the gap between installments in a split-release model, the more sales drop off.
Even the higher-ups probably rushed to get this one finished.
    88AnonymousSep 4, 2026 00:16
For a limited edition this expensive, you'd think they'd include the full soundtrack instead of a mini one.
    91AnonymousSep 4, 2026 00:18
    Re: #88
They'll probably sell the full soundtrack separately anyway… probably slapping some tagline on it like "Relive that emotion once again ────" lol
    89AnonymousSep 4, 2026 00:17
The fans who've stuck with and supported this series the longest are going to be the most let down by this lineup and pricing.

If it had been something like a standard-edition triple pack for ¥15,000 — like the twin pack they did when Rebirth launched, aimed at getting as many people as possible to play — that would've been understandable.

But this is just too ugly. This is probably going to sell like 10,000 copies in its first week.
    110AnonymousSep 4, 2026 00:30
    Re: #89
If you mean the digital twin pack they did for Rebirth, they're doing a digital triple pack for this one too.
    98AnonymousSep 4, 2026 00:23
Probably because if they packed in all the DLC, it wouldn't be ready in time for next year, and the disc version wouldn't sell.
    101AnonymousSep 4, 2026 00:25
    Re: #98
Ah, so it's release the disc first and add DLC later. Still, going back on what they previously said about "no DLC" is something else… well, I wasn't planning to buy it anyway so whatever lol

Hope it ends up stalled out like FF15 did ^^ (referencing FF15's famously scrapped post-launch story DLC)

Background and Key Points of Debate

This announcement comes as the Final Fantasy VII Remake series — following “Remake” in 2020 and “Rebirth” in 2024 — moves toward its concluding chapter. The “Complete Edition” in question is a premium limited version; a standard digital trilogy set (¥11,330) has also been announced separately, and the ¥77,777 price tag put the spotlight on how much the limited edition’s added extras are actually worth. Opinion on the thread was split mainly over how to value the included bonus card: some pointed to past FF-collaboration cards reselling for tens of thousands of yen on the secondary market and predicted this one could top ¥100,000, while many others simply dismissed the price as far too high. The discussion was also colored by lingering distrust of the split-release sales model and doubts about whether this squares with the company’s previously stated DLC policy.

※This article is compiled and summarized from the 5ch (Hardware/Industry (Geha)) thread “FF7 Remake Series Complete Edition Confirmed for ¥77,777!.”

  • FF7’s Third Installment Has Noticeably Worse Graphics Than Rebirth — Dumbed Down for Weaker Hardware?

Footage of “FINAL FANTASY VII REVELATION” (releasing April 8, 2027) was shown during a State of Play, and 5ch users quickly pointed out that the graphics look inferior to its predecessor, Rebirth. Some speculate this is due to development being built around a multiplatform release alongside the Switch 2, while others suggest it reflects a design shift made in light of how troubled Rebirth’s Switch 2 port turned out to be. Beyond the graphics debate, the thread’s discussion expanded into Japan’s dependence on the domestic market and Nintendo, as well as the shifting relationship between Sony and the Final Fantasy series.

    It's been downgraded
just so it can run on that garbage hardware.
    6AnonymousSep 3, 2026 23:00
It's because of the Switch 2's crappy performance.
    7AnonymousSep 3, 2026 23:01
I thought the trilogy was already finished.
    Guess it wasn't.
    8AnonymousSep 3, 2026 23:01
Rebirth and Remake were both trash though?

    21AnonymousSep 3, 2026 23:04
The Switch 2 port of Rebirth was hell, after all.
It probably drove costs way up, and despite that the downgrade was still brutal.

Feels like this time they avoided that by building the game from the ground up as a simultaneous multiplat with the Switch 2.
    22AnonymousSep 3, 2026 23:04
It's the fault of everyone who didn't buy the PS5 version of Rebirth.

This is the dilemma Japanese publishers face.
If you're focused purely on the overseas market, you can ignore Nintendo entirely, but once you factor in the domestic market, that's not an option.
    37AnonymousSep 3, 2026 23:13
    Re: #34
Because of Nintendo, Japan's game industry risks getting left behind by the rest of the world.

Compared to Western, Chinese, and Korean developers who've dropped Nintendo hardware entirely to focus on PS5, the development environment here is at a huge disadvantage.
    85AnonymousSep 3, 2026 23:55
    Re: #34Re: #37
Overseas markets are shifting to Steam too, you know, and PlayStation's overseas sales are dropping right along with it.
Also, FF became "washed up" in Japan first, and that dragged Western sales down with it.

That doesn't mean it's fine to neglect the domestic market — and honestly, why should Japanese gamers even have to care about a game company's business circumstances in the first place?
What Japanese gamers want is games made for Japan.

Photorealistic visuals with that anime-style acting is the worst possible combo.

Also, judging by how half-assed Sony's presentation of this FF was, it looks like Sony money has been cut way back too.
Did Sony finally realize that PlayStation declined because they kept marketing games like this as flagship titles?
Japan's a country that loves anime, so at this point the only way for PS to make a comeback is to push something like Persona 6 as the flagship title.

Square Enix itself is ending service for FF7 Ever Crisis next month without even waiting for the finale to release, so they don't seem to have much intention of actually selling this.

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

FINAL FANTASY VII Remake launched for PS4/PS5 in 2020, and its sequel, Rebirth, followed in 2024, later receiving a Switch 2 port as well. The newly announced conclusion to the trilogy appears to have been developed from the outset with a Switch 2 multiplatform release in mind, and the central theory in the thread was that the graphics look inferior as a result of being tailored to lower-performance hardware. At the same time, some pointed to increased costs from going open-world, or to design changes made in response to lessons learned from Rebirth’s troubled Switch 2 port, so no single cause has been settled on. It’s worth noting that what was shown here is only announcement-stage footage — the final in-game performance and visuals haven’t been confirmed, and the release itself is still a ways off, in April 2027. Some also pointed to the short amount of time the game got during State of Play as a sign that FF’s standing within the PlayStation camp may be shifting, though that too remains speculation.

※This article is compiled from excerpts and a summary of the 5ch (Hardware/Industry (Geha)) thread “[Sad News] FF7’s Third Installment Has Noticeably Worse Graphics Than Rebirth — Did They Dumb It Down for Weaker Hardware?“.

  • Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Update Upends Time Attack Records, Opinions Split

A +0.1 change to coin-boost acceleration in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe’s latest update has pulled the rug out from under years of Time Attack (TA) records. On 5ch’s hardware/industry board (“Geha”), the change split posters between TA enthusiasts furious that their records were rendered meaningless without explanation, and cooler-headed users who shrugged it off with “just set new records under the new rules” or “TA players are a tiny minority, this is overblown.” Some pointed out that records from the old ruleset aren’t actually deleted, just archived separately by patch — leaving a noticeable gap in how seriously people took the controversy.

    69AnonymousSep 3, 2026 20:06
You get to discover new routes and everyone starts from zero — that's a good thing

If updates had kept coming steadily since launch, you'd figure more were on the way, but this really came out of nowhere — like, why now?

    Re: #85
So it's a timing issue, huh
Though if they patch Time Attack separately, wouldn't that make it harder to practice?

Background and Key Points of the Debate

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe’s Time Attack (TA) system is designed so records are sorted and managed by patch (ruleset), and even after this update, records set under the old ruleset are preserved rather than erased. Several posters in the thread made this same point (>>8, >>12), suggesting the thread title’s claim of “wiping out the past entirely” is something of an exaggeration. The debate split along two lines: (1) whether even a small tweak like a +0.1 coin-boost change — which alters racing lines and undercuts the foundation of existing TA strategies — should be seen as an “unreasonable blow,” or whether players should simply take it as a chance to “chase the top spot again under the new ruleset”; and (2) whether the whole controversy deserves to be taken seriously at all, given how small the TA-playing population is. Some posters also speculated that the change was made to align with, or nudge players toward, the Switch 2 version, though this can’t be confirmed from the thread itself.

  • Famitsu’s Onimusha Article Omits Switch 2 from Platform List — 5ch Users Cry ‘Deliberate’

A post claiming that the platform-icon lineup in Famitsu’s September 10 issue feature on “Onimusha” doesn’t include a Switch 2 icon became a hot topic on the game hardware (ゲハ) board. While some in the thread suspected “they must be deliberately leaving Switch 2 out,” others countered that “since the Switch 2 version was announced later, they probably just forgot to add the icon — the text listing is still there,” splitting opinion between intentional exclusion and a simple mistake. The thread also notes that a Switch 2 version product page can in fact be found on the Nintendo eShop.

    Re: #87
Whether they like it or not, there's nothing they can do about PlayStation software just not selling

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

What sparked this thread was a claim that gaming magazine Famitsu, in an article introducing “Onimusha,” left the Switch 2 icon out of its list of compatible-platform icons. On the hardware/industry (ゲハ) board, there’s a long-running undercurrent of frustration with how Famitsu handles Nintendo hardware coverage, and this incident quickly fed into the view that “this has to be deliberate.” That said, some posters in the thread pointed out that because the Switch 2 version was announced later than the other platforms, the icon list simply hadn’t been updated yet — even though the text listing itself was present — leaving open the possibility that it was a simple oversight. It’s also worth noting that a Switch 2 version product page can indeed be found on the Nintendo eShop, so this is easy to misread as the release itself being in doubt, which it isn’t. On the whole, this is a familiar type of thread for the board — a mix of distrust toward how media outlets treat different platforms and the usual rivalry between console fanbases.

*This article is compiled as an excerpt and summary of the 5ch (Hardware/Industry (ゲハ)) thread “[Sad News] Famitsu, for some reason, doesn’t include Switch 2 in Onimusha’s platform list.”

  • PS enthusiast: “It’s a lie that PlayStation isn’t popular in Japan! Combined hardware and software sales favor PS”

A post appeared on 5ch’s hardware/industry (“Geha”) board claiming that it’s a lie PlayStation isn’t popular in Japan — that when you combine hardware and software sales overall, PS actually sells better. In response, data on recent software sales rankings was presented showing the Switch in first place with 4.86 million units (48.2%) and the Switch 2 in second with 3.98 million units (41.1%), while the PS5 trailed far behind at just 1.01 million units (10.5%). Hardware unit sales showed an equally wide gap, with the Switch 2 at 2.43 million units against the PS5’s 390,000 — and no data ever emerged to back up the original poster’s claim.

Laid out this way it almost looks like a close race… "how mysterious" (a pun on Fushigidane, Bulbasaur's Japanese name)

Background and Key Points of This Debate

Arguments over sales data crop up regularly on 5ch’s gaming hardware board, but this time the discussion talked past itself thanks to the vague standard of “hardware and software combined.” Japan’s home console market has long been discussed in terms of weekly unit-sales charts, where Nintendo hardware has consistently dominated the top spots. At the same time, the thread introduced data showing the PS5 taking the top spot in UK packaged-software revenue for 2025 — a reminder that rankings can flip depending on the country and the metric used (units vs. revenue, packaged vs. digital), a distinction that’s easy to overlook. Domestic unit-sales figures were presented repeatedly throughout the thread, but no one ever agreed on what “overall” was actually supposed to mean — units, revenue, domestic, or worldwide — so the argument ended in a stalemate.

  • Palworld Card Bid Tops $10,000 — 5ch Users Smell a Fake

A post by an overseas collector claiming a PSA10-graded gold “Kattiva” card from the Palworld TCG (Trading Card Game) had received a $10,350 bid went viral. The post declared that “a card only 34 days old just beat out Charizard, which carries 10 years of history,” but reactions on 5ch were largely skeptical. Users pointed out that the same card’s Japanese version was still sitting unsold on Mercari at 130,000 yen, and that the auction hadn’t actually closed at the time. Comments questioning the story followed, like “Nobody’s actually bought it” and “Isn’t that just a typo for $1,000?” Meanwhile, data suggesting Palworld’s own popularity is fading also drew attention, feeding a broader debate over the card’s price tag versus the game’s momentum.

A card that’s only 34 days old just beat out Charizard, which carries 10 years of nostalgia.

Rarity doesn’t need history. It just needs everyone to agree “this is the one.”

Palworld’s Gold Kattiva card broke $10,000 just 34 days after the TCG’s release.

Nothing's changed, it's still the same — there's no way this actually sells, you idiot, lol

Background and Key Points of This Story

The original source is a post on X by overseas TCG collector Jared K. Tartre, claiming that a PSA10-graded gold “Kattiva” card from the Palworld TCG had received a $10,350 bid. However, posters in the thread noted that “the auction hadn’t ended or been settled at that point,” so it’s worth remembering that a bid isn’t the same as a final sale price. In fact, the same card’s Japanese version is listed on Mercari for 130,000 yen and remains unsold, and other eBay listings haven’t drawn much bidding action either. On 5ch, some floated the theory that it was a data-entry error (“maybe they meant $1,000 and added a zero”), while others pushed back, citing a bid history of 61 entries — leaving the truth of the matter unresolved as the discussion went on. In the background is data suggesting the Palworld TCG has slid out of Amazon’s sales rankings after debuting at #17 right after launch, alongside Steam and Google Trends figures showing interest has dropped back to pre-launch levels — meaning the debate has partly turned into a muddled argument that conflates one card’s price tag with the game’s overall momentum.

  • Japanese Version of ‘The Blood of Dawnwalker’ Gets Blood and Gore Cut for Censorship

It’s become a hot topic on 5ch’s hardware/industry (Geha) board that the Japanese version of the action RPG ‘The Blood of Dawnwalker’ has had its blood and gore effects cut. The game had been drawing attention ahead of release as a new title from staff behind the ‘Witcher’ series, but the thread turned heated after it emerged that not just the console version but even the PC (Steam) version is censored for Japan. Alongside criticism that even overseas digital purchases only offer the Japanese version if the account region is set to Japan, posters also shared a workaround — editing the launch options to display the uncensored version in Japanese — while others voiced jaded takes on the genre itself, saying they’re ‘sick of these games where you just swing a sword around in a dark screen.’

Account: Only usable with a PlayStation Network account whose country/region is set to 'Japan'

    Re: #87
    Oh really.
    No wonder it's boring.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Under Japan’s CERO rating system, sexual and violent content that exceeds a certain threshold results in a ‘Z (18 and up)’ rating, and major publishers often respond by trimming content from the overseas version to pass review. ‘The Blood of Dawnwalker,’ the title at the center of this discussion, is a vampire-themed action game from Rebel Wolves, a studio founded by former CD Projekt Red staff. The thread zeroed in on the fact that the blood effects — an element tied directly to the game’s own title — have been almost entirely removed in the Japanese version. One common misconception is that censorship only applies to the console version; in reality, even the overseas release only offers the Japanese version through digital-only storefronts if the account is set to Japan, and the same restrictions extend to the PC (Steam) version as well, regardless of platform. At the same time, posters discussed workarounds such as changing the language setting via launch options or personally importing the overseas package, which raised further questions about how effective the censorship really is. It’s also worth noting that titles like Elden Ring have managed to release with blood effects intact, showing that whether censorship happens can come down to the developer’s resources and how negotiations with CERO play out.

  • New Fire Emblem Sparks “Male Characters Are Getting Snubbed” Debate — 5ch Fires Back: “There Are Plenty of Hot Guys, Though?”

A post on X (formerly Twitter) claiming that “the new Fire Emblem favors its female characters, who are all cute, while the male characters get treated badly” went viral and sparked a debate on a thread in 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board. Posters tallied up the number of good-looking male candidates by name and repeatedly compared the new game to the earlier title Three Houses. At the same time, some pointed out that while the raw number of handsome characters has actually gone up, the proportion may look lower because the game also added more characters with strong personalities or older designs — complicating any simple “favored vs. snubbed” framing.

    Re: #97
If people were actually allergic to handsome guys, Final Fantasy wouldn't sell at all

Background and Key Points of This Debate

The Fire Emblem series has traditionally mixed in rugged, older-looking characters and characters built around strong personalities alongside its more conventionally handsome ones, meaning the bar for what counts as “handsome” varies widely from title to title and viewer to viewer. In the thread, opinions split even on the exact same characters, with some calling them handsome and others disagreeing — showing this isn’t an issue that gets settled just by counting heads. Some also pointed out that while the absolute number of handsome characters has actually increased, the simultaneous rise in strong-personality and older-character designs may make it look, proportionally, like there’s a “hotty shortage.” Whether the original X post was based on an accurate read of the actual character lineup can’t be verified from the thread alone. Debates like this over “favoritism vs. neglect” tend to recur across other games too, and part of the underlying cause may simply be that character-design preferences split along generational and gender lines.

※This article was compiled as excerpts and a summary from the 5ch (Hardware/Industry (Geha)) thread “X: “The new FE favors its female characters, who are all cute, and it’s frustrating how badly the male characters get treated.”“.

  • PS5 Info Show Airs Tonight at 10PM — 5ch Asks: ‘How Badly Do You Want Shine Post?’

A thread went up on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (“Geha”) board after news broke that Sony’s PS5 info program “State of Play” airs tonight at 10PM. The thread’s original poster pointed to PS5’s aggressive momentum — citing things like “PlayStation locked down the FF7 Remake’s promotional rights” — and posters speculated together about what the broadcast might reveal. One focus was whether Shine Post, a music game believed to be under timed exclusivity for Switch 2, would get a PlayStation announcement, with some noting that a year has passed since its launch, right around when that exclusivity period would expire. Other topics discussed in parallel included a possible GTA6 PS5 console bundle, a new RPG from Konami, unannounced slots at Tokyo Game Show, and whether a Switch 2 version of the Persona series exists.

A leaker who went by "Midori" (now deleted/gone) said both 4 and 6 are coming to Switch 2, so even if it's not a simultaneous release, it'll happen eventually.

"Divine punishment": a multiplatform title with a Switch 2 version gets announced ahead of a Nintendo Direct…
    …that's pretty weak.

More importantly, isn't Switch 2 about to set a new low in the Famitsu weekly sales chart?

Just being on the Geha board makes your life sound rough, lol lol lol

A console in its 6th year genuinely about to lose out to one in its 2nd year.
What kind of user base gets you to that point?

Seriously, nobody cares about this, lol

    Background and Key Points

“State of Play” is a PlayStation info program Sony broadcasts irregularly, typically used as a venue for new title reveals and follow-up updates. Shine Post, the music game that came up in the thread, launched first on Switch 2, and titles like this often carry a “timed exclusivity” deal under which versions for other platforms unlock after a set period. Posters speculated about an announcement because the timing lines up with when that exclusivity would lift, but none of this is an official announcement — it’s purely 5ch speculation. The weekly sales comparison between Switch 2 and PS5 that came up toward the end of the thread is likewise just a claim made in a post, with no source cited. Some of the more combative language typical of the Geha board has been trimmed, but the content itself centers on speculation about next-gen console sales strategy and title rollouts — the truth won’t be known until the actual broadcast airs.

  • Sony Legal Filing: “No Reasonable Consumer Thinks Buying on PlayStation Store Means Owning the Game”

California’s AB 2426, which took effect in January 2025, requires clear warning labels before purchase whenever a digital sale uses the word “purchase” but what’s actually being sold is a revocable license to use. Citing this law, four PlayStation users sued Sony back in June. Sony’s response brief, filed in late August, points to the fact that two of the plaintiffs were each able to “purchase” the very same game 11 days apart, arguing that “no reasonable consumer in the digital age believes clicking a purchase button makes them the owner of a game.” On 5ch, alongside skepticism toward that logic, users pointed out that Steam had already rolled out warning labels and that Nintendo’s terms of service contain similar language — sparking debate over why Sony alone got sued.

On June 18th, four PlayStation users in California sued Sony. The whole dispute hinges on a single word. The PlayStation Store has a button labeled “Purchase,” followed by a “Confirm Purchase” prompt — but in reality, downloaded games are nothing more than a license to use that Sony can revoke at any time. And California’s AB 2426, in effect since January 2025, requires a clear warning whenever the word “purchase” actually just means a license.

In late August, Sony’s legal team filed a response brief, and its contents have stirred up controversy. Sony argues that in the digital age, no “reasonable consumer” believes that clicking the “Purchase” button makes them the owner of the game. And to prove it, the legal team pointed to two of the plaintiffs themselves as evidence.

    Are they stupid or something?

That kind of excuse doesn't fly, which is exactly why the law spells things out in such detail.
    4AnonymousSep 3, 2026 09:04
Did they seriously just cite themselves as "the source"? lmaooo

This looks like an easy loss for them.

However hard the lawyers argue, if it's spelled out in state law, they're guaranteed to lose.
Guess it's a case of "your state, your problem" lol (a pun on "おま国/your-region," the meme about region-locked content, twisted here into "your-state")

    Re: #8
    Steam already handled this.

Steam now spells out in the shopping cart that "users don't acquire the game itself, only a license to use it" — probably a response to California's new law.

They just made the wording clearer — it was already in the terms of service to begin with. Same goes for Sony, Nintendo, and Valve.

    Re: #59
They're only getting sued because there's no warning label, that's the whole point Re: #13. If you're gonna say "everyone else does it too!", you need to actually show the others also lack a warning label — otherwise the argument means nothing.
    10AnonymousSep 3, 2026 09:07
The first plaintiff bought Resident Evil Requiem for $69.99 on February 14th, and the second bought the exact same game at the same price 11 days later.
By Sony's logic, a true "owner" is someone who holds exclusive possession of something.
If the first buyer had truly become the owner of that game, it should have been impossible for the second buyer to purchase it 11 days later.
The fact that they both could buy it, Sony argues, proves both of them understood they were only buying a license — meaning the "Purchase" button deceived nobody. That's the conclusion Sony draws.

Is it even possible for a lawyer arguing a copyright/ownership case to not know what a "copy" is?
    11AnonymousSep 3, 2026 09:09
With digital downloads you're just buying a license.
Did people seriously not know that?
    14AnonymousSep 3, 2026 09:10
Under this "true owner" theory, what happens with those boxed copies that just contain a download code?
    19AnonymousSep 3, 2026 09:12
    Re: #14
You're just buying a piece of paper. It just happens to have a download code printed on it.
    18AnonymousSep 3, 2026 09:12
Should've just priced the digital version cheaper than the boxed copy lol🤣
    20AnonymousSep 3, 2026 09:12
If Sony pulls out of the business and shuts down the servers, are users supposed to just mail their PS consoles back to Sony then?

    Re: #16
Are you replying without even having read post #1?

    > requires clear warning labels
It's not about the terms of service — it's a state law requiring a clear warning to be shown before purchase.
    25AnonymousSep 3, 2026 09:15
    Re: #16
Everyone else kept it vague and avoided saying it outright — it was a gray area. But Sony was the only one who flat-out said "even if you buy it, it's not the user's property," which is why this keeps coming up as an issue.

You don't even need to look for it — it's spelled out right at the very start lol

    Nintendo Switch Terms of Use
    https://support.nintendo.com/jp/switch/eula/usage_policy.html

    Article 1: License Grant

    Re: #38
    Exactly my point lol
"This software" there probably means the master copy (not the actual retail product), and it's worded so it can be read that way — so they're covered if trouble ever comes up.
See, you still don't get it lol

    – Add a clear warning label
    – Change the wording from "purchase" (to "rental," "license agreement," etc.)

Is this really something worth fighting all the way to court over?

If they call it a "rental" or something, people will start thinking there's a time limit on how long they can play, or that it needs to be returned. They can't be bothered explaining that to every single person one by one.

    Re: #86
Nintendo does the exact same thing though — are you saying Nintendo's a loan shark too?

Background and Key Points of This Debate

AB 2426 is a California consumer-protection law that took effect in January 2025. It requires businesses to display a clear warning before purchase whenever a digital good is labeled a “purchase” but is actually just a license. Steam got ahead of this back in October 2024 by adding a warning to its cart screen, and how other companies have handled it became a point of contention in the thread over this lawsuit as well. Both Nintendo’s and Sony’s own terms of service have long contained language to the effect that “the software is licensed, not transferred” — but having that buried in the terms of service is a separate matter from being required to display it clearly on the purchase screen. AB 2426 mandates the latter, and the thread saw a back-and-forth between people arguing “isn’t Nintendo the same?” and others countering that “the issue is whether a warning is shown, not what’s buried in the terms.” Not conflating the mere existence of terms-of-service language with the purchase-time warning requirement is key to understanding this lawsuit.
