  • Honogurashi no Niwa Passes 200,000 Units Sold in Japan — 5ch: ‘It’s Been Sitting Near the Top of the eShop Charts’

Nippon Ichi Software’s farming-meets-horror simulation game “Honogurashi no Niwa” has surpassed 200,000 cumulative units sold in Japan roughly a month after launch, according to an announcement on the game’s official X (Twitter) account. Thread posters were divided over whether that figure leans more toward physical or digital sales, and whether PS5 or Switch/Switch2 is driving the numbers. With Famitsu’s weekly retail tracker showing a mere 1,186 physical units sold, some argued physical sales must be sluggish, while others pointed to the game’s strong reviews on the eShop and Steam as proof it’s still selling briskly.

“Honogurashi no Niwa” Tops 200,000 Units Sold in Japan

About a month after launch, thanks to everyone who picked up the game, we’ve surpassed 200,000 cumulative units sold in Japan.

The whole staff is truly grateful to everyone enjoying their days in Kanogatsu Village.

The PS5's digital download rate is 95%, so that basically means it's not selling at all on Switch.

    Re: #4
PS5 physical copies are just under 10,000,
and Switch+Switch2 physical copies are 44,000,
so that would put Switch+Switch2 digital sales at negative 40,000. (Yeah, that math doesn't work.)

Physical copies are sold out, so I guess digital alone stacked up 50,000 units on its own?
    That's impressive
It has been sitting near the top of the eShop charts the whole time after all.

Since this is order/reservation numbers rather than shipment numbers, the Switch2 version — which is still seeing an ongoing physical stock shortage — is probably favored here.
Naturally, if physical stock is short, the digital download rate would also be higher for Switch2.
I'd guess that added 50,000 units is almost entirely the Switch2 version.

Only a Japan-only version has been released, yet 70% of its Steam reviews are from overseas players.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

“Honogurashi no Niwa” is a farming-meets-horror simulation released by Nippon Ichi Software, and thread posters note that its development team includes people known for the “Yomawari” series. The “200,000 units” figure comes from an official social media announcement, and it’s not clear whether it combines physical and digital sales or how it breaks down by platform. Where the thread split was over how to interpret the gap between Famitsu’s low weekly retail figure (1,186 units) and the impression that the game is “still selling,” given its steady position near the top of the eShop charts and its strong Steam reviews. Some argued the low physical number reflects a shift to digital due to stock shortages, while others see it as simply sluggish physical retail sales — both remain speculation. It’s also worth noting, since it’s easy to overlook, that despite being a Japan-only release, 70% of its Steam reviews come from overseas users, showing its reputation is spreading abroad.

  • Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascension — New ‘Boost Action’ System Revealed in Video

A newly released trailer shows the Great Sword using “Boost Action,” a new system tied to “Ascension,” the expansion believed to be coming to Capcom’s hit action title Monster Hunter Wilds. On 5ch’s hardware/industry (Geha) board, reactions were mixed: some users were excited for the stylish new moves, while others said the animation still feels dragged down by Wilds’ original sluggish combat, raised concerns over the director being replaced by someone from the Exoprimal team, and worried about monsters being recycled. The game’s sales also became a talking point, having reached 11.4 million units sold one year after launch.

    Re: #83
Ah I see — since it's coming to Switch 2 as well, that's why they're throwing in more Generations/Rise-style elements

Background and Key Points of Discussion

The Monster Hunter series has a history of adding new action mechanics with each expansion or major update, and this new “Boost Action” system fits that pattern. Opinions in the thread split over how the Great Sword moves in the video — some felt it looked less than snappy for a supposedly new feature and still weighed down by Wilds’ base-game feel, while others argued this was just a partial preview and shouldn’t be judged too harshly. The thread also touched on a possible change in the development team, though the specifics of roles and circumstances couldn’t be confirmed within the thread and remain speculative. As for the sales figures, comparing the strong initial launch pace to the more recent numbers can make growth look like it’s stalling, but it’s also fairly typical for major titles to see sales growth slow down several months after release.

  • PS Downloads Are “Usage Rights,” Not “Ownership” — 5ch: “Because It Wouldn’t Sell If They Called It Rental”

With Sony signaling plans to end PlayStation disc manufacturing in January 2028, a class-action lawsuit is underway arguing that what buyers of download games actually receive is not ownership but merely a “license to use.” According to reports, Sony’s lawyers are arguing that no “reasonable consumer” would be misled into believing they own a digital copy. On 5ch (Japan’s largest anonymous message board), the thread covering this story splits between those who say “they keep it vague because calling it a rental would kill sales” and those who counter that “other companies don’t disclose it either, so it’s unfair to single out Sony” — with the discussion eventually spilling into Japanese copyright law concepts like the distribution right and exhaustion.

As Sony signals plans to end physical PlayStation disc manufacturing in January 2028, some are calling for clearer disclosure that what buyers of digital (download) games actually hold is “merely a license to use the software, not ownership.”

Unlike a disc, digital copies can’t be lent out or resold secondhand — and if a service shuts down or something goes wrong with your account, you could lose the ability to redownload or play the game altogether. Advocates say that risk needs to be made clear to buyers.

Amid all this, reports say Sony’s lawyers argued in a class-action lawsuit over PlayStation digital game purchases that no “reasonable consumer” would mistakenly believe they “own” a digital game. Put more bluntly: if you’ve got a functioning brain, you should already know you don’t actually own it.

This whole debate only exists because, after killing off physical media, Sony went to court arguing it's a license, not ownership.
If that's your argument, people are telling you to change the label from the start — but going 'what about Nintendo, what about Microsoft' isn't actually responding to that.
If you want to say Nintendo and MS should fix it too since they do the same thing, fine — but fix your own house first.

    Re: #63
Case law has limited the scope of the 'distribution right' (hanpu-ken) to tangible objects.
I think that ruling exists precisely to stop courts from over-broadening the definition of 'reproduction.'
Given the era it was decided in, that's a pretty reasonable call, don't you think?

By the same token, it's only because of case law that the distribution right applies to games at all —
despite games not being films, which is what the right was originally written for.

(“Fūrinkazan” — a famous four-character motto, “wind, forest, fire, mountain,” associated with the warlord Takeda Shingen — is this poster’s chosen handle.)

    66AnonymousSep 2, 2026 11:17
It's really simple: with download versions of games, movies, manga, etc., what you're buying is access rights.
If they labeled it 'rental,' that would create an obligation to return it.
    68AnonymousSep 2, 2026 11:19

    Background and key issues

Behind this debate lie two concepts from Japanese copyright law: the “distribution right” (hanpu-ken) and “exhaustion” (shōjin). In a past ruling on used-game sales, Japan’s Supreme Court held that, for packaged software, the distribution right is exhausted at the moment of first sale — which is what makes reselling secondhand discs legal. The legal sticking point in the thread is that this doctrine assumes a tangible object (a disc), and arguably doesn’t extend to data delivered as a download. Sony’s plan to end PlayStation disc production in January 2028 is the backdrop against which this lawsuit is playing out. Where the thread split was over one specific question — whether there’s an obligation to disclose the license-not-ownership distinction. One side credited Steam for spelling out the licensing terms in its terms of service; the other argued that since Microsoft and Nintendo don’t clearly disclose it either, singling out Sony is unfair. What’s easy for readers to miss is that this isn’t a Sony-specific issue — it’s a structural problem across all digitally distributed games: what you think you bought isn’t actually something you own.

  • Falcom President: “Multi-platform releases will be our standard going forward”

In an interview with ascii.jp, Nihon Falcom president Toshihiro Kondo revealed that the company is moving away from its previous PS5-focused release strategy and will now treat multi-platform releases as the default going forward. The shift comes after Switch and Steam versions proved effective at pulling in new players. On 5ch’s hardware/industry (Geha) board, some users welcomed the policy change, while others pointed out the contradiction of claiming to “go multi-platform” while still skipping an Xbox release — sparking debate over Xbox’s tiny market share in Japan, the limited resources of small-to-mid-size third-party developers, and Falcom’s past struggles breaking into Nintendo hardware.

    — The Switch and PS5 versions of this title come bundled with a download code for ‘Trails in the Sky FC’ as a first-print/pre-order bonus. Could you tell us the story behind including that?

Also, are there any plans for HD remasters of ‘Trails in the Sky SC’ or ‘The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky the 3rd’ (hereafter, ‘the 3rd’)?

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Third-party console gaming used to mean the PlayStation camp, but in recent years the standard workflow has shifted to developing for PC (Steam) first and porting to consoles afterward, which lowers the bar for multi-platform releases, especially for smaller developers. Xbox, meanwhile, has a small installed base in Japan, making it hard to justify porting and operating costs against expected sales — which is why many Japanese publishers leave it out. The download ratio for ‘Trails in the Sky the 1st’ cited in the thread (51% PS5, 27% Switch 2) was calculated by thread posters themselves from an official published breakdown, not pulled directly from a primary source — worth keeping in mind. It’s also worth noting that this “multi-platform” push doesn’t mean releasing on every single platform; it’s a business decision to selectively choose platforms expected to be profitable, a nuance that’s easy to lose sight of from the thread discussion alone.

  • Monster Hunter’s New Official Title Is So Long, 5ch Says It Beats Every Insulting Nickname They’ve Ever Coined

The Monster Hunter series has a long history of picking up insulting nicknames on 5ch’s gaming board for its various ports and spin-offs — “Busuzawa” (a jab at a past Vita port), “Buhicchi” (mocking the Switch port), and “Half-Rise” (implying Rise is a stripped-down cash-grab). This thread set out to debate whether anything could ever top those, but partway through someone brought up the new game’s actual, official product name: “Monster Hunter Wilds Premium Deluxe Edition.” Despite not being a made-up insult at all, its sheer length and pomposity had everyone laughing that it beat every nickname fans had ever invented. Nobody could've predicted they'd ship it without even a Gathering Hall (the series' classic multiplayer hub)

Background and Key Points of This Topic

The Monster Hunter series has been ported and re-released across handheld and home consoles many times over, and each time 5ch’s gaming board has coined a new insulting nickname — “Busuzawa” (the Vita port), “Buhicchi” (the Switch port), “Half-Rise” (a dismissive term treating Rise as a stripped-down version). The focus of this thread isn’t really those organically-coined insults, though — it’s the ironic twist that the manufacturer’s own official product name turns out to be funnier than any of them, which is exactly the kind of in-joke this “hardware/industry” (geha) board thrives on. That said, claims about which sells better, Rise or Wilds, or whether the Switch 2 version will take off, aren’t established facts — they’re just speculation and impressions from an anonymous message board, so take them with a grain of salt. Some posts in the original thread also contained remarks disparaging specific nationalities or individuals; those have been excluded from this article.

  • Xbox Series X Price Surges to ¥117,980 in Japan

It’s become a hot topic on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (“Geha”) board that the Japanese price of the Xbox Series X has climbed to ¥117,980, with the Series S now at ¥82,480. Some posters recalled being able to buy one for around ¥50,000 at launch, and a stream of comments expressed shock at just how much prices have jumped. The thread also saw comparisons to the PS5, which can still be bought for around ¥55,000, complaints about consoles barely appearing on store shelves due to shortages, and a split of opinion over whether the Japanese release of GTA6 will even be subject to CERO (the Computer Entertainment Rating Organization) review.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Xbox has a small market share in Japan and no domestic assembly or manufacturing base, so it functions essentially as an imported product. The weak yen and rising component costs are affecting game consoles across the board, but Xbox is in a position where price hikes tend to stand out the most. CERO (the Computer Entertainment Rating Organization), which came up repeatedly in the thread, is the body that reviews titles mainly when they’re sold as physical packages in domestic stores; download-only titles that skip physical packaging can sometimes be distributed without going through that review. The debate over whether the Japanese release of GTA6 will be uncensored stems from this difference in distribution formats, but as of this thread, Microsoft had made no official announcement, so it’s worth noting this remains purely speculation among posters.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Hardware/Industry, aka “Geha”) thread “Current Japan pricing: Xbox Series X at ¥117,980, Xbox Series S at ¥82,480 — the reality Geha keeps refusing to face”.

  • Switch2 “Out of Ammo” Debate: 5ch Erupts Over Nintendo vs. PS5 Sales Data

A thread appeared on 5ch’s “Hardware/Industry (Geha)” board pointing out how thin Switch2’s upcoming lineup looks. The thread starter posted “there’s no ammo left,” prompting a wave of replies citing cumulative sales figures for major Nintendo titles like Mario Kart World and Animal Crossing: New Horizons and countering with “they’re not even trying yet.” Meanwhile, PS5 fans fired back with single-month sales figures for titles like Call of Duty and Resident Evil Requiem, and both sides traded their own sets of numbers to argue for superiority. The thread also drifted into GTA6’s release timing and frame-rate specs, but with Nintendo and PlayStation fans talking past each other, the debate never converged.

    * Call of Duty: Black Ops: 3 million (July 2026, single month)

The real heavy-hitter first-party titles are still coming, so the future's bright

Not like PS, whose last fireworks show is a 30fps offline game

Background and Key Points of This Debate

“No ammo left” is a stock phrase on the Hardware/Industry board for a platform that’s run out of upcoming titles to point to, and here it sparked a back-and-forth with PS5 fans over how thin Switch2’s future lineup looks. The numbers cited mix cumulative sales figures for Nintendo’s major franchises with single-month sales figures for PS5-exclusive and ported titles, and since the source data covers different time frames and metrics (“single month” versus “lifetime total”), a straight comparison is misleading. It’s also worth noting that claims about GTA6’s delay and its resolution/frame-rate specs aren’t based on any official Nintendo or Sony announcement at this point — they’re just hearsay circulating in the thread. The split came down to whether posters believed Nintendo is “holding titles in reserve” or read the weak current sales as a sign of an upcoming slowdown, and neither side offered conclusive evidence either way.

  • Xbox controllers put Confirm on the Down button and Cancel on the Right — 5ch users torn over ‘I absolutely hate this’

Xbox-style controllers, like many other devices including the PS5, PC, Google, and Apple products, use a layout where the bottom button confirms and the right button cancels. A thread titled “I absolutely hate this” on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board sparked debate over this layout, along with a stream of trivia about controller button layouts — including how confusing PlayStation’s circle/X notation is, and the fact that the original Xbox’s button layout actually differed from current consoles.

Those came out after PlayStation expanded into America and X became the confirm button.
Sony agonized between the circle-confirm it had set and the X-confirm it had set, and what Sony landed on was… circle/X as confirm.
    Honestly, that's incredibly dumb.

Background and key points of this discussion

The Xbox-style button layout is shared across many platforms — the PS5, PC, Google, and Apple — with Nintendo standing alone as the one using its own layout, and that’s the starting point of the thread. Commenters brought up the popular claim that “the Xbox layout is rational because the buttons run in alphabetical order,” but this was debunked using an image of the original Xbox controller, showing that this wasn’t actually the design philosophy behind it. The thread also covered the history of PlayStation’s circle/X notation — how X became the confirm button once PlayStation expanded into North America, while Japan and Korea alone kept circle as confirm. Many commenters argued the layout debate comes down to “familiarity” rather than “rationality,” and opinions were clearly split between defenders of the Nintendo layout and supporters of the Xbox-style layout.

  • GTA6 Retail Codes Are Dirt Cheap — 5ch: ‘PS Store Charges ¥9,800, This One’s ¥8,300’

The download code bundled with retail packaged copies of GTA6 is being sold for less than the PS Store purchase price, sparking discussion on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board. The thread also zeroed in on the code’s unusually short 170-day expiration period, with some suggesting a link to Japan’s reserve-deposit system under the Payment Services Act. Speculation flew about why such a short expiration was set and whether prices would keep falling after launch, alongside a broader debate over whether to buy the retail or store version.

If pre-loading is available that shouldn't matter though

Games like this tend to make a big pointless deal out of a worldwide simultaneous release, with Japan getting some oddly specific launch time lol
    63AnonymousSep 2, 2026 11:48
    Re: #58
You can buy the package a week early, so you can play at midnight launch with the packaged version too
    65AnonymousSep 2, 2026 11:49
So once the code expires, does it become a 50%-off clearance item?
    68AnonymousSep 2, 2026 11:53
    Re: #65
Once the code expires, wouldn't they just be selling an empty box?
    67AnonymousSep 2, 2026 11:52
Only good for 170 days — they're treating it like groceries lol
    74AnonymousSep 2, 2026 11:56
    Re: #67
With food you can at least cook it into something else, but you can't do that with a game package
That's some seriously bad inventory to be stuck with

No, that's not it — I'm talking about the code expiration thing
    83AnonymousSep 2, 2026 12:08
Is there even a point in buying a digital-download code in a physical package at a store?
    89AnonymousSep 2, 2026 12:12
    Re: #83
    Because it's cheaper
Right now it's ¥9,800 on the PS Store, versus ¥8,300 this way
Though obviously that advantage disappears the moment the PS Store runs a sale
Since most third-party titles these days go on sale within half a year, the real effective window is even shorter than that
    90AnonymousSep 2, 2026 12:12
They surely aren't selling at a loss, so the wholesale price for major retailers is probably around ¥6,500
    91AnonymousSep 2, 2026 12:15
    Re: #90
People are saying it's probably around 70% of retail, same as with discs
Even at a 15% discount, the math still works out to a profit
    92AnonymousSep 2, 2026 12:16
Honestly, choosing to buy the censored version on the PS Store in the first place is the real mistake

It's such an inconvenient truth nobody wants to touch it
    97AnonymousSep 2, 2026 12:20
    Re: #96
Is there any version besides Xbox? PlayStation (snort) users who want to enjoy the game's mature content
paying a whole ¥8,000 for the censored version with the adult scenes cut
and playing a version worse than the Xbox one — isn't that the real contradiction?

Oh, you're a 'real gamer' (lol), my apologies

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

Under Japan’s Payment Services Act, issuers of prepaid codes with no expiration date (a category known as ‘in-house prepaid payment instruments’) are required to deposit an amount equal to 50% of unused balances with the Legal Affairs Bureau as of each reference date, once those balances exceed a certain threshold. Setting an expiration of roughly six months or less is said to exempt a code from this rule, and the 170-day period discussed in the thread falls within that range. Some posters speculated that the short expiration meant ‘SIE’s finances must be in bad shape,’ but similarly short expiration windows are commonly used on other companies’ download codes as a way to sidestep the deposit requirement, and don’t necessarily signal financial trouble. The thread also included practical exchanges about purchasing methods — such as how the price gap between the store and retail versions could vanish once the Store version goes on sale, and whether buying the packaged version still allows play from midnight on launch day.

  • Capcom Reportedly Set to Bring Resident Evil Titles to Switch 2 One After Another, Sparking Buzz

Capcom is reportedly planning to bring a large number of Resident Evil series titles to the Nintendo Switch 2, a claim that lit up 5ch’s hardware/industry board. The trigger was first-week sales data for this year’s Resident Evil Requiem — 155,373 units on PS5 versus 38,793 on Switch 2. Combined with Sony’s announced move away from disc drives, posters speculated that users who prefer buying physical copies might migrate to Switch 2, and the thread also lit up with wishes for old-game remakes and predictions about future ports.

Apparently set to be announced at a Nintendo Direct

By the way, the Switch 2 version got absolutely crushed by the PS5 version in sales lol

They wouldn't bother releasing it if it didn't sell, so Resident Evil must be moving units.

Even in Japan, Switch 2 ended up outselling PS5 in the back half. Overseas it's probably even more lopsided.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword is coming out, so yeah, Okami probably really is headed to Switch 2 as well.

    Wonder if they'll do another triple-pack bundle for RE2, RE3, and RE4?
    37AnonymousSep 2, 2026 11:38

The 7/8/9 bundle was such a good deal, but it never got reprinted so I couldn't get it. Should've bought it when I had the chance.

Wasn't there that issue where the female characters look uglier on the PS5 version lol. Good news for the Switch 2 version then.
    38AnonymousSep 2, 2026 11:38
    Re: #33
For RE2 through 4, it probably won't be any different from the versions already out there. Though whether it runs at 30fps or 60fps is a fair concern.
    56AnonymousSep 2, 2026 11:41
Capcom finally got around to Code: Veronica, so RE0 and RE1 remakes will probably follow. Not much novelty left in 'RE-making' anything from 5 onward though.
    60AnonymousSep 2, 2026 11:42
    Re: #56
For 5, I'd want them to fix the inability to move while aiming. 6 needs a full ground-up rebuild honestly.
    58AnonymousSep 2, 2026 11:41

    80AnonymousSep 2, 2026 11:48
    Re: #65
Well, they've focused on PlayStation up to now, and PS does have more Resident Evil fans. But for multiplatform titles overall, Nintendo users actually buy more copies — outside of a handful of exceptions, PS users really don't buy as many games.
    91AnonymousSep 2, 2026 11:51
    Re: #80
Even though Like a Dragon and Pragmata both got crushed on Switch 2, the only games where Switch 2 has outsold PS5 are basically shovelware lol
    82AnonymousSep 2, 2026 11:49
Going forward, the crowd that saves money buying physical (and hedges against duds by reselling) isn't going to buy the PS5 version — which will be digital-only and unsellable once purchased — they'll buy the Switch 2 version instead.

Honestly, I figured I'd keep holding onto my PS5 as long as I could still save money buying physical. But now that option's gone. And it's happening mid-cycle for the PS5, no less.

A PS5 with no disc drive is nothing but a downgraded PC — it has no reason to exist anymore lol
    84AnonymousSep 2, 2026 11:50
    Re: #82
Paying for online on top of that feels wasteful too, so a lot of people will probably just sell off the whole console.

Capcom makes huge money off its back catalog, so anything that can be ported gets ported.
    114AnonymousSep 2, 2026 11:57
    Re: #88
Seems like it keeps selling steadily across a lot of countries over the long run. They're probably not judging things by first-week numbers alone, and if a port is doable, there's no real reason not to release it.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The premise behind this discussion is the actual sales gap in first-week figures for this year’s Resident Evil Requiem: 155,373 units on PS5 versus 38,793 units on Switch 2. Looking at those numbers alone, PS5 appears to be winning by a landslide, but posters’ interest was really directed at what comes next — specifically, with Sony signaling plans to drop the disc drive, which platform physical-media buyers would migrate to. Capcom’s long-running business model of profiting from ports and remakes of older titles was also a hot topic, alongside discussion of past franchises like Okami, Onimusha, and Ace Attorney. It’s also worth noting that claims along the lines of “Switch 2 is outselling PS5” appeared in the thread, but no concrete figures or sources were given to back them up — they should be read as posters’ personal impressions rather than verified data.
