  • Cygames Takes Legal Action Over Copyright-Infringing ‘Strip’ Mods for Uma Musume — 5ch: ‘Can’t Help It, It’s Always Online’

News from Spanish-language outlets that Cygames issued a formal takedown request — citing copyright infringement — against the distributor of a mod that strips the clothes off characters in the PC version of “Uma Musume Pretty Derby” sparked discussion on 5ch’s hardware/industry (gaming) board. Since there’s long been a culture of quietly tolerating offline mods, thread opinions split over whether this move signals a crackdown on texture mods in general or draws the line specifically at nudity and sexual content. The discussion also turned to how much real teeth a Japanese publisher’s warning actually has against an overseas distributor — a broader question about how international copyright enforcement plays out in practice.

CYGAMES Goes After an Uma Musume Mod
Cygames has issued a formal copyright infringement request to take down a mod for the PC version of the game 'Uma Musume Pretty Derby' that strips the clothing off the main characters.

Mods only get a pass when they're offline.
Pull this in an always-online mobile game and
of course the company won't stay quiet.

Visual mods don't get reflected on the server, so that's irrelevant.
If a game sells cosmetic skins, think of it as interfering with their business — that's a no-go even offline.

To begin with, the whole idea of turning everything into a cute-girl personification

    104AnonymousSep 2, 2026 10:14
    Re: #98
What's actually transmitted online is just a few kilobytes of position and flag data — the rendering uses whatever's installed on that player's own PC.

Strip mods just swap out the rendering data, so it has nothing to do with what's happening on the other end of the connection.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

What Cygames actually took issue with this time was the “strip mod” that removes clothing from characters in the PC version of Uma Musume — not a blanket ban on all texture modifications. As pointed out in the thread, fan-made derivative works are an area Uma Musume’s operators have officially tolerated, but sexual content has clearly been off-limits from the start. The reality is closer to this being a response to a mod judged to have crossed that line. Uma Musume is also modeled on real racehorses, and turning them into characters is premised on getting permission from each horse’s owner. A modification like a strip mod risks undermining the very basis of that permission — which may be a bigger reason for the operator’s concern than copyright infringement alone. Another point that’s easy to misread is the claim that “a warning to overseas users beyond Japan’s legal reach is meaningless.” Under the Berne Convention, copyright is mutually protected among member countries, but this is a framework in which each country’s legal system recognizes the others’ copyrights — actually enforcing that right still requires filing suit in the courts of the country in question. Having international law in place doesn’t mean it carries force instantly, and opinions in the thread were split on this very point.

  • New Pokémon Movie Swaps Protagonists, Ash Nowhere to Be Found — 5ch: ‘This Is Basically a Pokémon Card Movie’

It’s been announced that a new Pokémon animated film, *Pokémon: Wild Card*, will open in 2027. It’s the franchise’s first theatrical film in seven years — since 2020’s *Pokémon the Movie: Coco* — and notably, the lead isn’t Ash, who has driven the series until now, but a Pokémon Card Game player aiming to become champion. The released key visual also features Mimikyu. On 5ch, a thread debated both the discomfort some felt with headlines framing this as a “protagonist swap” and speculation over what a movie built around the Pokémon Card Game could actually be about.

It has been decided that a new Pokémon animated film, *Pokémon: Wild Card*, will be produced, with a 2027 release date announced. It will be the franchise’s first new animated film in seven years since 2020’s *Pokémon the Movie: Coco*, and this time the story is built around the Pokémon Card Game. In addition, the protagonist is changing from Ash — the story’s lead will instead be a Pokémon Card Game player aiming to become champion, and the released key visual depicts the new protagonist alongside Mimikyu.

Pokémon used to live free and easy in the wild with their friends.
Then one day, humans showed up.
A startled Pokémon leaps out in front of a human, only to get beaten, drugged with paralysis, or put to sleep — already the doing of some enslaved Pokémon that's been brainwashed and tamed by humans — and then gets a device called a Poké Ball thrown at it and is sealed inside.
This terrifying Poké Ball is actually a powerful brainwashing device, and once sealed inside, you become the slave of whoever threw it.
A Pokémon trapped in a ball and turned into a slave is cruelly torn from its parents, siblings, family, friends, and lovers.
And then it's even forced to breed according to human preference, turning even its own children into slaves too…
And yet people keep calling it the humans' 'companion' or 'friend' — really it's just a brainwashed slave forced into life-or-death battles.

    Poor Pokémon.

Don't come all the way here just to brag, Kitani lol (a jab implying the poster is Bushiroad founder Takaaki Kitani)

    Background and Talking Points

The Pokémon TV anime already went through a major generational handover back in 2019, so a theatrical film not centered on Ash isn’t unprecedented in itself. What’s new this time is that the film is the franchise’s first theatrical work built around the Pokémon Card Game — and the split in opinion on the thread wasn’t really about ‘Ash being replaced’ so much as differing reactions to the idea that the protagonist might be a Pokémon Card Game player in the first place. How the film will reconcile a setting where Pokémon themselves already exist with a card-game premise is impossible to judge without more details, and comments imagining Yu-Gi-Oh!-style effects remain pure speculation for now. Pokémon cards have also become a red-hot category in recent years, popular enough to fuel high-priced resale both in Japan and abroad, so how the film ties into that popularity will likely be a point of interest heading into release.

  • SIE Publishes Basic Policy on Customer Harassment — 5ch Reacts: ‘Of Course Sony Was Going to Do This Too’

SIE (Sony Interactive Entertainment) has published a basic policy on customer harassment on its official website. Under the policy, if employees are found to be subjected to personal attacks or excessive demands, the company may limit or suspend its response to the customer and consider legal action in cooperation with police and lawyers. The move appears to be linked to the revised Act on Comprehensive Promotion of Labor Measures, which takes effect on October 1, 2026, and will require all companies to implement countermeasures against customer harassment. Square Enix and Capcom had already rolled out similar policies, and on 5ch’s console gaming board, the announcement sparked a heated back-and-forth between the PlayStation and Switch camps.

    1AnonymousSep 1, 2026 15:23
    Basic Approach
We strive to respond to customers sincerely so they can use our products and services with peace of mind, and we value customer feedback as a way to improve our services.
At the same time, our employees' dignity and safety must never be threatened by customer harassment — conduct or demands from customers that go beyond what is socially acceptable.
    3AnonymousSep 1, 2026 15:24
    Our Response

If conduct constituting customer harassment is confirmed, we may limit or discontinue our response to the customer in order to protect our employees' safety.
In addition, when we deem it necessary, we will consider measures including legal action and criminal proceedings in cooperation with the police, lawyers, and other relevant parties.

    A Request to Our Customers

To ensure all customers can use our services with peace of mind, and to protect a healthy working environment for our employees, we ask for your understanding of this basic policy.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

By way of background, the revised Act on Comprehensive Promotion of Labor Measures takes effect on October 1, 2026, making customer-harassment countermeasures mandatory for all companies. SIE’s publication of its basic policy looks less like an independent decision and more like a response to this legal change. Commenters in the thread also pointed out that Square Enix and Capcom had already rolled out similar measures. That said, SIE’s announcement does not spell out exactly which acts cross the line into customer harassment that ‘exceeds what is socially acceptable,’ leaving it unclear how far this extends to critical posts on social media or requests like ‘stop going diskless.’ This ambiguity seems to be part of why the thread spun into speculation over the scope of ‘limiting or discontinuing service.’ That said, most of the thread was spent on the back-and-forth between the PlayStation and Switch camps rather than debating the policy itself, with only a handful of posts actually explaining the legal background.

  • New Fire Emblem’s ‘Evil God Revives, Heroes Time-Leap’ Plot Splits Fans — 5ch: ‘It’s a Game, Let It Get Fantastical’

Nintendo’s newly revealed Fire Emblem title, Bansen Senkō (‘a riot of colors’), has a story where an evil god is resurrected and the hero time-leaps into the past to save comrades who’ve already died. The thread’s original poster called the device ’embarrassingly cringe by now,’ but reactions were split. Some defended it, arguing the game world is allowed a bit of over-the-top flair, while more cautious posters pointed to how Three Houses and Engage’s stories were received, arguing it all comes down to the quality of the writing and presentation. The talk also spilled into the long-running debate over the sales gap between Three Houses and Engage, and which direction — story depth or SRPG polish — the series should lean toward.

    1AnonymousSep 1, 2026 10:25
It's disappointing — does Intelligent Systems really not get what made Three Houses click?
Everything up to the end of the Direct was great, but that final time-leap reveal suddenly reeks of Engage.
I'll eat my words if it turns out good, but…
    8AnonymousSep 1, 2026 10:38
Stuff like this is fine even if it's a bit cringe, a bit over-the-top, or a bit childish.
A flat story with zero momentum isn't fun either, is it?
Let's enjoy some fantastical vibes, at least in the game lol

Did they really need to make you give up the rings — the game's whole selling point — partway through?
    27AnonymousSep 1, 2026 11:16
    Re: #13
If it comes with actual gameplay, like retreat battles or figuring out how to beat a ring whose powers you already know, having it stolen from you isn't a bad situation. Engage just ended up looking goofy because of the writing and how those scenes played out.
    30AnonymousSep 1, 2026 11:19
    Re: #13
As a story it's good — it shows the contrast between the Divine Dragon and the Fell Dragon, and above all, having Lucina and Lyn turn up here is great. The small details, like the ring getting stolen, are garbage, though. Whether a long absence makes sense in a leveling-up game is a separate issue.
    21AnonymousSep 1, 2026 11:03
Just the fact that people are talking about it like this already gives it more buzz than something like Saros or Marvel Tokon — if it were really this cringe, nobody would be talking about it the way they talk about those games.
    22AnonymousSep 1, 2026 11:06
    Re: #21
Deadpool alone got people talking, lol. As a game, though, it's pretty much trash.
    38AnonymousSep 1, 2026 11:39
Some people are mistaking the five-years-later world for Part 2, but that world is actually the starting point. From there, the main story — basically the whole game, really — is about traveling five years into the past to save the four characters who, in the present, have already become fallen heroes, living through each of their stories along the way.
    40AnonymousSep 1, 2026 11:49
    Re: #38
Going just off what's been revealed, starting five years later doesn't really make sense. If Balor's army is attacking, come help then — showing up only after everyone's already dead makes for a pretty useless Valkyrie. They probably just wanted to match Three Houses, but that game's 'I was asleep for five whole years' setup was a garbage scenario too.

    42AnonymousSep 1, 2026 11:51
'You can challenge the final boss whenever you want' sounds like a recipe for a thin story. Even Breath of the Wild's story suffered from that structure — FE really shouldn't try it.

Your level is already 40 at the start of the game, and the trailer shows it going up to 60, so Part 2 isn't just a single fight with the final boss and done.
    49AnonymousSep 1, 2026 12:15
Does FE really need such an elaborate story? Even a well-worn, cliché scenario should be fine as long as the characters are distinct and it's presented well, I'd think.
    61AnonymousSep 1, 2026 12:37
    Re: #49
Three Houses broke from that mold and became the best-selling entry. Engage went back to classic FE and sales got cut in half. At this point it's pretty obvious where the actual demand is — sales don't lie.
    57AnonymousSep 1, 2026 12:29
The 'pretty cool, right?' vibe — dead serious, full-confidence chuunibyo edginess — is rough to sit through. You need to write in some goofy, lighthearted moments too, or it won't balance out.
    73AnonymousSep 1, 2026 13:31

Sounds like you don't realize Three Houses' more laid-back support conversations were great too. This new game's Dietrich's crew already looks primed for comic relief as well.
    64AnonymousSep 1, 2026 12:40
Among people who've played FE for a long time, Engage gets rated highly. Three Houses has a bunch of unnecessary stuff bolted on, kind of like it's trying to be Persona.
    65AnonymousSep 1, 2026 12:43
    Re: #64
That's really just an in-crowd echo chamber inflating the score — proof that hardcore-fan ratings can't be trusted at all. And honestly, dragging in old-game callbacks and maps that Awakening and Fates used to sell as $2 DLC only makes the diehards happy. Most players, in Japan and abroad alike, have no clue about the older games.

    83AnonymousSep 1, 2026 14:17
Looked at as a Sunday-morning kids' show or tokusatsu-style thing, Engage isn't really anything unusual. They were probably going for new, younger fans (elementary through high schoolers) — adults sneering at it is the lame part.
    90AnonymousSep 1, 2026 14:47
    Re: #83
Well, chuunibyo types like dark, gloomy, complicated worldbuilding, but that lane alone is saturated and only gets thinner from here. Western RPGs go all in on exactly that, and it just doesn't land with Japanese players at all. The core of Fire Emblem is being an SRPG anyway, so leaning into an Engage-style tone to widen the audience is a legitimate move.
    92AnonymousSep 1, 2026 15:06
    Re: #83
Do you have a source showing kids actually responded better to it than to Three Houses?
    101AnonymousSep 1, 2026 15:59
    Re: #83
Engage is rated CERO B, so elementary schoolers technically aren't even supposed to play it. If they built it for kids outside the rated age range, that's just dumb — and if the platform holder is ignoring its own CERO rating, that's a problem in itself.
    87AnonymousSep 1, 2026 14:24
Asked whether Three Houses' strategy portion is really that bad — no, not really. Three Houses has excellent writing, and the strategy side is at least passable too.
    102AnonymousSep 1, 2026 16:09
    Re: #87
With Three Houses, the exploration segments were a hassle and the balance was way too sloppy. Cavalry having negative speed growth, or the huge gender gap between classes leaving male mages universally underpowered — it was riddled with problems.
    88AnonymousSep 1, 2026 14:28
So whatever happened to Engage, the one that's supposedly good on the gameplay side?
    89AnonymousSep 1, 2026 14:30
    Re: #88
It just didn't spike the way Three Houses did — looking at the series as a whole, it actually sold pretty well. Fates had its sales split across multiple versions, and Engage still hit a decent bar on its own.
    91AnonymousSep 1, 2026 15:04
    Re: #86
A 'core base that champions SRPGs for their own sake' is a tiny minority. A game aimed at that kind of niche is exactly the sort of thing Nintendo shouldn't bother releasing at full price — an indie title would do just fine.
    96AnonymousSep 1, 2026 15:31
    Re: #91
If it sells around 1.5 to 2 million every time, that's plenty.

Background and key points of this debate

The Fire Emblem series has long been split between entries like Awakening, Fates, and Engage, which lean into ‘SRPG number-crunching’ gameplay, and Three Houses, which leans into a ‘weighty, story-driven’ style. As pointed out within the thread, Three Houses recorded the series’ best-ever sales, while Engage, which returned to the franchise’s roots, saw sales cut in half — and that sales gap sits behind the ongoing argument over how much chuunibyo-style flair should be tolerated. There were also replies clarifying the new title’s ‘starts five years later’ structure: early on, the story loops back five years to save fallen comrades, a point that was easy to misread from the announcement alone. It’s also worth noting, on both the defense and criticism side, that Engage carries a CERO B rating, meaning it was never intended as a game for elementary schoolers in the first place.

CD Projekt Red co-CEO Michał Nowakowski’s comment that he is “very satisfied” with sales of the Nintendo Switch 2 version of “Cyberpunk 2077” became a hot topic on 5ch’s console-war (“gehan”) board. Following his remark that, right after launch, the game outsold most first-party Nintendo titles besides Mario Kart, the thread saw a mix of posts pointing to weak sales for Nintendo’s own titles and posts analyzing why third-party software is doing well on Switch 2. At the same time, some posters cited recent earnings data suggesting the third-party market is actually shrinking, leading to disagreement over whether the strong showing will last.

CD Projekt Red co-CEO Michał Nowakowski commented on how the Nintendo Switch 2 version of “Cyberpunk 2077” has been selling.

“For a while after launch, I think it was the best-selling third-party game on the Nintendo Switch 2.

In fact, aside from Mario Kart, it outsold most of Nintendo’s own games.”

There are actually plenty of cases of third-party titles on the original Switch getting a second wind,

    *① FY27/Q1: total software revenue (¥132.7 billion ÷ 61.5% = ¥215.8 billion) × third-party share of 17.4% = ¥37.5 billion

    Background and Key Points

“Cyberpunk 2077” launched in 2020 to a wave of bugs and harsh criticism, and has since rebuilt its reputation through ongoing updates. It’s worth noting that CD Projekt Red’s “very satisfied” comment here refers to the game’s relative sales ranking among Switch 2 software overall, not a guarantee about the growth rate or profitability of the Switch 2 market as a whole. In the thread, posts pointing to weak sales for Nintendo’s own titles ran alongside posts analyzing why third-party software is doing well on Switch 2, but posts citing earnings materials also showed data indicating that even as Switch 2’s cumulative hardware sales grow, third-party market revenue itself has shrunk compared to the same period last year — leaving open just how broadly the “third-party games sell on this platform” narrative actually holds across the market.

The fact that hardware nearly six years old can deliver this level of visual quality drew surprise on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (“Geha”) board, and the discussion soon expanded to whether a 60fps performance mode exists, how it compares to the PC version, and the PS5-vs-Xbox pre-order ratio — turning the thread into a wide-ranging mix of technical talk and sales speculation.

I've been on PC since GTA3, but yeah, PlayStation is genuinely where GTA Online thrives.
I'm not into roleplay servers or creepy anime-character avatars, so I couldn't enjoy that side of the PC version.
    And honestly, it's the cheaters.
The number of cheaters is night and day between the two.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

GTA6 is Rockstar Games’ latest title, slated for release on PS5, Xbox, and PC. Digital Foundry is an overseas outlet well known for its visual analysis, regularly publishing articles that measure actual hardware performance in terms of frame rate and resolution — and this report’s claim of “native 1440p/30fps without upscaling” is based on that kind of hands-on analysis. The finding applies to the base PS5 model, which is distinct from how the higher-end PS5 Pro performs, though some posts in the thread conflated the two. It’s also worth noting that the cited figure — “PS5 version pre-orders up 606%” — comes from a specific retailer’s pre-order data mentioned in a separate thread, not official sales figures or final shipment numbers. Whether a 60fps performance mode exists remains unconfirmed at this time, and the heavy CPU demands typical of big open-world titles are thought to be a factor.

*This article is compiled from excerpts and a summary of the 5ch (Hardware/Industry, “Geha”) thread “GTA6, No Upscaling.”

  • Popular IP mobile games keep ‘shutting down’ — 5ch says it’s not tipa, it’s gacha fatigue

Mobile games built on popular IPs like “Bungo Stray Dogs,” “Love Live!,” “Final Fantasy,” and “Sword Art Online” have been shutting down one after another. IT journalist Hiroshi Mikami analyzed the trend, saying, “Young people today don’t play social games. TikTok is enough for them, and games feel like a hassle. What they want is ‘tipa’ (time performance — getting maximum value for minimal time spent).” The 5ch thread reacting to this article erupted with pushback against the “tipa” theory itself. Opinions split over why young people are abandoning social games, with comments like “It’s not about tipa, it’s a rejection of the exploitative gacha system” and “Casual players are being abandoned, which is why hardcore titles like FromSoftware and Resident Evil are thriving.”

No wonder they’re “shutting down”… The dark reasons behind the wave of mobile game “service terminations” as young people turn away

What on earth is happening in the mobile game industry?

“Lately, mobile games (hereafter ‘mobile games’) built around popular IPs (intellectual properties) like ‘Bungo Stray Dogs,’ ‘Love Live!,’ ‘Final Fantasy,’ and ‘Sword Art Online’ have been ending their service one after another,” says a gaming magazine writer.

Gacha has nothing to do with it either.
They watch short videos just because they're trending.
They watch just to keep up with conversations so they don't get left out.
They played social games before for the same reason — just going along with everyone else.
In the past people got their info from TV and magazines; now the trendy info source just happens to be short-form video.
    45AnonymousSep 1, 2026 21:48
The bar for entry into games itself is simply too high now — only the "cream" of today's kids can even engage with them.

Short-form video → the algorithm automatically picks something entertaining, and you know if it's fun within the first second.

Games → you have to choose what to play yourself, and it takes several minutes before you know if it's fun.

As a result, only the proactive, high-attention-span "cream" of young people can still play games at all.

What it really means is that game ads are losing to short-form video.
Square Enix and other social-game makers run their ads in between short videos,
but those aren't received as an intriguing game introduction — they're just perceived as annoying noise.

So the games themselves never get any interest, and without interest people don't buy them or spend money on them.
Within the first second, viewers go "yeah yeah, another boring, generic game ad" and just scroll past.

That's exactly why something like a Nintendo Direct is so valuable and important — a broadcast that a huge, wide cross-section of people actively choose to go watch and pay attention to.

Some people treat social games like "quick, easy fun," but free-to-play social games actually take an incredibly long time before they become genuinely enjoyable.

Early on, they keep the difficulty low so you don't quit, so you're just stuck mashing buttons through dull, repetitive battles.

Partway through, tedious progression systems, grindy repeat-farming, and item-collecting side quests start piling on — with "do this or your character growth stalls" pressure.
Growth is slow, and you can't fill out your roster without gacha-pulling constantly.

Only after you understand the systems, assemble a decent roster on your own, get your characters built up, and push well into the content do you finally reach the point of an actual game — "think for yourself, build your team, and see if your strategy works."

Even with expensive, flashy production values, the cost-performance and time-performance are both terrible.
And the content itself is aimed at mass appeal, so there's nothing distinctive about it — just formulaic drama you've seen a hundred times before.
    109AnonymousSep 1, 2026 23:50
    Re: #107
But it's still convenient since you don't need a game console.

Background and key points of this topic

Free-to-play mobile games have long relied on gacha-based microtransactions as their main revenue source, but in recent years they’ve faced criticism that “gacha preys on gambling psychology,” along with competition for people’s free time from fully free short-form video platforms like TikTok. Where the thread split was over how to interpret young people’s exodus from social games: as a shift in consumer behavior toward “valuing tipa (time efficiency),” or as “a rejection of the gacha payment structure itself.” The former position aligns with Mikami’s analysis, while the latter counters that “tipa is just an excuse — the real issue is distrust of gacha.” Neither view goes beyond speculation. It’s also worth noting that Hiroshi Mikami is an IT journalist who appears on TV news programs, not a gaming-industry expert — a detail that isn’t obvious from the original article or headline alone, which is part of why some thread commenters said they’d “never heard of him.”

*This article is compiled from excerpts and a summary of the 5ch (Hardware/Industry [Geha]) thread “Mikami: ‘Young people today don’t play social games. TikTok is enough for them, games are a hassle. What they want is tipa’.”

  • Why Is the PS5 Losing Steam? 5ch Says It’s Become a ‘New-Releases-Only Market’

A thread titled “Doesn’t PlayStation feel seriously washed up? What’s causing this?” popped up on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board, drawing a flood of replies about PlayStation’s fading momentum. The thread cited global hardware sales figures for July 2026 — PS5 at 784,000 units, Switch 2 at 707,000, and Xbox Series X|S at 115,000 — sparking discussion over how close the race has become. Looking at Amazon’s bestseller rankings, posters noted that PS5 software slots are dominated entirely by new releases with no older titles in sight, prompting claims of a “closed market where nothing sells unless it’s brand new.” As for the cause, opinions were all over the map — the discontinuation of physical (package) versions, insufficient anti-scalping measures at launch, and a management strategy overly focused on Western markets were all floated — with no consensus reached.

You can tell just from how even a worldwide Hollywood smash hit like Spider-Man didn't really pop off big here — GTA was never that huge a deal in Japan to begin with. If anything, think about how many of those "parties" you're talking about happened on Nintendo hardware over the past 20 years. There were tons of social-phenomenon-level, million-selling titles, right? And you're the one who missed out on every single one of those parties. I know it hurts, but that's reality. ・Trails to Azure (Sora no Kiseki 2nd Chapter)
    ・Wolverine

    ・FF Resonance

Now, what do all of these have in common? That's right — every single one is an "upcoming new release." Not a single already-released game made the list, even ones that came out quite recently. This is about as clear a proof as you'll get that it's "a closed market where nothing sells except new releases, because no new customers are coming in."

Well, most of them are going toward military-diverted mining use, so barely any are actually selling as game consoles — that's why there's such an abnormal gap with software sales.

    Re: #95
By that logic, if GAFA (Google/Amazon/Facebook/Apple) put out even a single mini-game, it'd rocket straight to the top of the rankings.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The figure raised in the thread — that PS5 edged out Switch 2 by a slim margin in July’s worldwide sales — reflects the fact that competition with Nintendo’s new Switch 2 hardware is now in full swing. On the other hand, the claim of a “closed market where only new releases sell,” based on Amazon’s rankings, needs to be taken with a grain of salt: that ranking is a snapshot at a given moment based on Amazon’s own proprietary criteria, not a statistic representing actual units sold. Some posters in the thread raised this same doubt. As for the underlying cause, multiple explanations were floated side by side — pricing strategy, a management focus tilted toward Western markets, the scaling back of physical (package) releases, and insufficient anti-scalping measures at the PS5’s launch — but no single explanation won out, and opinions remained split. There were also observations that a gap exists between the official sales figures and the sense of things on the ground in stores and the market, suggesting that this discussion is ultimately rooted in a mismatch between published data and consumers’ everyday impressions.

  • GTA6 Preorders Surge 606% for PS5, 127% for Xbox After New Footage Drops

Sensor Tower, a research firm tracking GTA6 preorders, has reported that following the new footage released on August 27, PS5 preorders jumped 606% on that day alone, while Xbox Series X|S preorders rose 127%. Before the footage dropped, cumulative preorders stood at 77% PS5 and 23% Xbox, and the surge comes after Rockstar had gone without releasing any gameplay footage since May 2025. On 5ch’s hardware board (Geha), opinions split over whether this gap simply reflects the difference in installed hardware base or signals real trouble for the Xbox camp.

GTA6 preorders opened on June 25, 2026, and research firm Sensor Tower has been tracking preorder numbers since the day before, June 24. Rockstar hadn’t released any gameplay footage since its second trailer in May 2025, and under those conditions, cumulative preorders built up right before the new footage dropped reached an estimated 4.6 million units according to Sensor Tower, broken down as 77% for the PlayStation 5 (PS5) version and 23% for the Xbox Series X|S version. Note that in Japan, the domestic package version doesn’t include a disc, and the PS5 version’s code is set to expire 170 days after release.

According to Sensor Tower, in the two days following the August 27 footage reveal, GTA6 preorders rose 572% compared to the prior 30-day average, and on the reveal day itself, the PlayStation 5 version reportedly recorded a 606% increase while the Xbox version saw a 127% increase.

Guess the Xbox version will outsell it in Japan then lol

    Background and Points of Debate

It’s worth noting that Sensor Tower’s figures are independent estimates compiled by the firm, not official sales data. GTA6 arrives over a decade after its predecessor, and since developer Rockstar had gone a long stretch without releasing gameplay footage, this reveal is thought to have driven the preorder surge. On the thread, opinions clashed over the gap between PS5 and Xbox preorder shares: some argue it simply reflects the current generation’s installed-base gap, where PS5 holds a commanding lead, while others see it as evidence that Xbox-camp users are waiting for the PC version or migrating to other platforms — no consensus was reached. Separately from overseas preorder trends, it’s also worth keeping in mind that Japan’s domestic PS5 package version doesn’t include a disc, and its download code is set to expire 170 days after release.

  • DF’s John Linneman: “Third Parties Furious Over Sony Killing Discs — Physical Sales Are Most of Their Profit”

Digital Foundry’s John Linneman has revealed that third-party publishers and developers harbor strong dissatisfaction with Sony’s push toward a “discless” future. According to Linneman, many of these companies earn substantial profits from physical disc sales, with some even generating the majority of their revenue from them. In the thread, users pushed back with claims that “90% of PS sales are digital,” while others shared information noting that sales reports for indie developers can be delayed by up to a month, sparking a divided debate over whether abandoning physical media is really the right direction for the industry.

Digital Foundry's John Linneman says publishers and developers are unhappy about Sony pushing toward a discless PlayStation future.
"Most of them were pretty furious. A lot of these companies are actually making significant revenue from physical sales—in some cases it's even the majority… The industry's reaction hasn't been positive."
A Washington Post journalist also said they were glad to see these concerns being confirmed by more people, adding:

    10AnonymousSep 1, 2026 12:03
    This is just plain false.

PS digital sales are at 90%.

No complaints from publishers or users—that's the reality.

    33AnonymousSep 1, 2026 12:16
    Re: #11
    That's exactly why it's "90% digital"—

The current numbers are massively inflated by demo downloads, reroll spam for gacha games, and free monthly PS Plus titles.
    12AnonymousSep 1, 2026 12:04
No matter how high the digital ratio is, physical still accounts for more day-one new release purchases.
Either way, Sony's cut of the profit doesn't change.
    14AnonymousSep 1, 2026 12:05
Are they unhappy with Steam too, I wonder?
If they want that, they should go try their luck on Xbox.

Steam has been digital-first from the start—it's a different situation from PS, where new releases are still mainly sold physically.
    15AnonymousSep 1, 2026 12:06
They kept massaging the numbers claiming digital was selling like crazy, and now some out-of-touch exec who doesn't know games is using that to kill discs entirely. lol

If they don't like it, they could just cut ties with Sony.
    17AnonymousSep 1, 2026 12:07
Solo/single-player games still sell a lot as physical copies, you know.
Most digital downloads are from deep-discount sales.
Though I get not wanting to buy something like a competitive multiplayer game physically at this point.
    18AnonymousSep 1, 2026 12:07
They were just dumping physical copies onto retailers, so of course that revenue will shrink now.
Just make good games and compete on merit.
    25AnonymousSep 1, 2026 12:10
    Re: #18
Overseas, there's price protection where publishers cover retailers' losses or allow returns, so retailers aren't actually guaranteeing they'll buy the stock outright.

    DF: "It's actually the majority."
    What a traitor.
    26AnonymousSep 1, 2026 12:11
Publishers making profit off physical are just a noisy minority—like 5%—so they're getting cut loose.
    32AnonymousSep 1, 2026 12:16
It's just the disc drive going away, physical packaging still exists, so it shouldn't matter to publishers.
Though that raises the question of why third parties are still putting out code-in-box releases right now.
    44AnonymousSep 1, 2026 12:27
    Re: #32
Word spreads fast among gamers that "code-in-box" is basically just a piece of paper, and it gets a negative reaction.

I get that physical is easier to manage since you get paid the moment it ships.
But with digital, it's hard to say for sure since you never really know when the profit from a sold copy actually gets paid out to the publisher.

With PlayStation, you have to actually chase them down or you'll wait a whole month just for the sales report.

Whether or not it actually sells to consumers, physical copies become money the moment they're shipped to retailers.
Apparently it's still best if everything sells through since it affects the next title, but
in terms of being able to make quick decisions, I think that's a real benefit for publishers.
    80AnonymousSep 1, 2026 12:48

    89AnonymousSep 1, 2026 12:58
    Re: #80-81
Sure, returns exist, but basically the money comes in the moment it's shipped to the distributor.
Though I guess you'd have to set aside some funds in reserve for returns.
    105AnonymousSep 1, 2026 13:11
    Re: #89
That's not actually how the Western returns-based system works.

The initial deal is basically asking the store to give you shelf space—you don't get paid just for placing the product there.
When the store sells a unit, they keep their "cut," and
the remainder gets paid to the publisher each time, as it sells.

So a "return" just means "pulling the product off the shelf"—no money actually changes hands at that point.

It's closer to how download-card sales work in Japan.

There's no cost to stock the cards, and the publisher just gets paid, minus a fee, for whatever actually sells.
    93AnonymousSep 1, 2026 13:04
If there had been some kind of push to promote digital sales—like Nintendo's "Katachike" download vouchers, or the DS Station kiosks back in the DS era—and digital sales grew as a result, sure, that'd make sense.
But with none of that happening at all, the idea that PlayStation alone shifted this drastically toward digital? It's obviously not credible.
    98AnonymousSep 1, 2026 13:06
    Re: #93
If anything, PlayStation doesn't even allow codes to be sold through outside retailers—its digital distribution channels are actually pretty narrow.

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

For background, the PS5 has sold both digital-only and disc-drive models side by side since launch, and this topic is a reaction to the broader industry direction of “further movement toward a discless future.” Where the thread’s opinions split was over how to assess the actual digital sales ratio—against the claim that “90% of PS sales are digital,” some pushed back by pointing out that the figure is inflated by demos and free monthly titles. Another point of contention is the practical difference between physical copies, which get paid out the moment they’re shipped to distributors, versus digital sales, where reporting and payment reportedly lag by up to a month—a difference tied up with North America’s returns system and Europe’s shelf-space contract structures, making it something that can’t be captured by a simple sales comparison. Opinions on Digital Foundry’s neutrality were mixed, and since some of the thread’s posts include baseless speculation, they shouldn’t be taken at face value as fact. In compiling this article, posts containing unfounded bribery accusations against real companies or mockery targeting specific groups were excluded.
