“Out of Remake Ammo”: Square Enix’s Strategy Sparks Debate on 5ch

The story

In recent years, Square Enix has repeatedly turned to remaking its back catalog — the Final Fantasy VII Remake series, the Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake, Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven, and more. On a thread that popped up in 5ch’s “Nanmo Jikkyo G” board, frustration over the lack of new titles amid this ongoing trend led one poster to declare that the company is “already running out of remake ammo.” The thread saw opinions split over several points: how Square Enix’s approach compares to Capcom, another company leaning heavily on remakes; whether the HD-2D style is a worthy technique or not; and wishlist picks for the next classic to get remade, with titles like Astro Noka and Valkyrie Profile coming up.

What people said

They're supposedly the remake experts, and they're already out of ideas
4AnonymousSep 19, 2026 20:46
If they did 4, 5, and 6 in that "Reimagined" style, I'd buy it

Just don't cut any of the story though
8AnonymousSep 19, 2026 20:49
Re: #4
What are you talking about? It's already set to be an HD-2D remake with extra story added
6AnonymousSep 19, 2026 20:48
There's also Astro Noka and Valkyrie Profile
111AnonymousSep 19, 2026 21:26
Re: #6
I genuinely want a real remake of Astro Noka
10AnonymousSep 19, 2026 20:49
If they've already remade everything once, why not remake the remakes?
92AnonymousSep 19, 2026 21:19
Re: #10
They're already doing that, so they're clearly not out of ammo
18AnonymousSep 19, 2026 20:53
Mystic Ark
Rudra no Hihou (Treasure of the Rudras)

Still waiting
24AnonymousSep 19, 2026 20:54
Re: #18
I'd love to see Mystic Ark rendered with today's visuals
44AnonymousSep 19, 2026 20:59
The only thing worth looking forward to from Square Enix is Paranormasight
Hurry up and make a sequel already, it can't be that expensive
127AnonymousSep 19, 2026 21:36
Re: #44
A new Lretrochika (another Square Enix mystery game series) would be nice too
52AnonymousSep 19, 2026 21:02
Capcom's gonna run out of ammo first, if anything
74AnonymousSep 19, 2026 21:09
Re: #52
Capcom isn't just doing remakes, they're landing hits with new titles too — Square Enix leans entirely on remakes, so it's a pretty different situation
96AnonymousSep 19, 2026 21:20
Re: #74
They're not "landing hits," that's just brand-name marketing muscle — the reviews are bad, aren't they
55AnonymousSep 19, 2026 21:04
Give it five more years and they'll be announcing FF7RR
77AnonymousSep 19, 2026 21:10
Re: #55
So it'll be Remake Remake, Rebirth Rebirth, Revelation Revelation?
65AnonymousSep 19, 2026 21:07
Romancing SaGa 2 [Revenge of the Seven] is pretty cheap right now — worth picking up?
Never played the series before, by the way
72AnonymousSep 19, 2026 21:09
Re: #65
It's the most beginner-friendly entry the SaGa series has ever had, so you won't regret buying it
79AnonymousSep 19, 2026 21:11
Front Mission: Gun Hazard doesn't need a remake — just let us play it on current hardware
Not sure if outsourced developer Omiya Soft is even still around, but
Valken, made by the same staff, got ported already
80AnonymousSep 19, 2026 21:11
Re: #79
Seems likely to happen eventually — they already put out remaster-leaning remakes of 1 through 3
83AnonymousSep 19, 2026 21:13
Re: #72
Thanks
The reviews are unusually high too, and it's cheap
I'll just go ahead and buy it
88AnonymousSep 19, 2026 21:17
Re: #83
Wait, you're buying the remaster? Not the recent remake?
89AnonymousSep 19, 2026 21:17
How was Square cranking out so many legendary games back around the '90s?
Unthinkable nowadays
97AnonymousSep 19, 2026 21:20
Re: #89
Because talented people were drawn in by Hironobu Sakaguchi's sheer charisma
93AnonymousSep 19, 2026 21:19
Is there actually a remake project that's ever been fully completed?
106AnonymousSep 19, 2026 21:22
Re: #93
FF7R is basically the only one split into multiple installments — the rest are all standalone releases, right?
100AnonymousSep 19, 2026 21:21
Still, Square Enix's recent remakes really do have good taste going into them
105AnonymousSep 19, 2026 21:22
Re: #100
Go on, elaborate
107AnonymousSep 19, 2026 21:23
I want DQ1 through 6 to get the Pixel Remaster treatment
116AnonymousSep 19, 2026 21:28
I want them to make a game where FFX's Yuna is the protagonist
137AnonymousSep 19, 2026 21:40
Re: #116
That's X-2
122AnonymousSep 19, 2026 21:33
I think a "Reimagined"-style DQ6 would be really interesting
And DQ4 done by the Revenge of the Seven team
126AnonymousSep 19, 2026 21:36
Re: #122
Either works, but they're grouped together as the Zenithian trilogy, so if they're going to do it, I want the tone to be unified
132AnonymousSep 19, 2026 21:39
FF7 and Dragon Quest III were hyped up as their "ultimate weapons," and the remakes turned out to be nothing special
So remaking Chrono Trigger at this point wouldn't even be worth talking about
138AnonymousSep 19, 2026 21:40
Re: #132
If they were going to remake Dragon Quest, I wanted them to go all-in with real 3D
HD-2D just reads as corner-cutting to me
133AnonymousSep 19, 2026 21:39
There's also Slapstick and Nekketsu Tairiku Burning Heroes
136AnonymousSep 19, 2026 21:39
Re: #133
Tom Sawyer too

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Since kicking things off with the FF7 Remake in 2020, Square Enix has kept up a steady stream of reworked older titles — FF7 Rebirth, Live A Live, the Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake, Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven, and others — leaving users quick to note how comparatively few new IPs have been announced. The thread split into two camps when comparing Square Enix to Capcom, another company leaning heavily on remakes: some argued Square Enix comes up short because Capcom is landing hits with brand-new titles at the same time, while others pushed back, skeptical of that praise for Capcom in the first place. There was also a gap in temperature around the HD-2D approach, with some seeing it as an efficient, cost-conscious technique and others viewing it as corner-cutting compared to a full 3D remake. It’s worth noting — though it wasn’t raised in the thread itself — that this remake-driven strategy has also been described in the company’s recent earnings reports as a pillar of revenue built on leveraging existing IP, meaning this isn’t purely a matter of fan sentiment but a deliberate business choice as well.
