The story

During the “PC Gaming Show Tokyo Direct 2026” broadcast in the early hours of September 21, 2026, it was announced that the 1993 RPG “Estpolis Denki” and its 1995 prequel “Estpolis Denki II” will be ported — with some renewal — to Switch/Switch 2/PS5/Steam. Reactions poured into 5ch’s hardware/industry (Geha) board immediately after the announcement: some praised it as “II is a landmark title in Super Famicom history” and “on the level of Chrono Trigger,” while others worried about the future of the retro game market, asking “why would today’s younger generation buy a Super Famicom game?” and “isn’t it just the same fans buying over and over?” — opinions split over both the game’s merit and who’s actually buying it.

The 1993 RPG “Estpolis Denki” and its 1995 prequel “Estpolis Denki II” are being ported with partial renewal!

The dramatic story that moved so many players to tears now returns!

"Partial renewal" is a scary phrase

Re: #4
It's Taito under Square Enix, so they'll probably price it at like ¥5,800

Thought this was some 'Bourbon House' fake-news gag, but it's actually real (Bourbon House = a satirical fake gaming-news site)

Heard it's coming to PS5 and the 'Switchie' too (mocking slang nickname for Switch)

Apparently it's Switch, Switch 2, PS5, and Steam

Didn't know they were doing something like this

First time I've seen it treated as a classic online — nobody around me even owned it

Re: #25
The first one is so-so.
The second is a landmark title in Super Famicom history — good enough to go toe-to-toe with Chrono Trigger.
The third came out too late and ended up a rare, hard-to-find game.

And then the DS version ruined that masterpiece.
Imagine if Chrono Trigger redesigned every character to look like someone else,
turned it into an action game where Chrono adventures alone,
and scrambled the story on top of that — that's basically what happened.

Re: #26
Jealous you're living in a timeline where 3 actually got released

Re: #26
The moment you throw in even one lie like that, the whole "DS version is trash" claim starts sounding fishy — you really shouldn't post half-baked stuff like that

The Ancient Cave is legendary endgame content
Hauling back gear with blue item-text names is such a dopamine rush

Man, that takes me back
It really was fun, wasn't it

This recent thread really makes it clear there just aren't young people in this genre, or at least this particular corner of it

Re: #57
Like Okunari and Hamster have both said, retro games like this look like they're selling,
but it's really the same handful of people buying over and over — kind of like the state of eroge for a while there. Pretty precarious.
Sounds like Hamster's struggling to train up successors too
69AnonymousSep 21, 2026 07:04
Re: #57
Well yeah, of course — this is an ancient retro game lol
If anything, a young person who actually knows about it would be the weird one
110AnonymousSep 21, 2026 08:58
Re: #57
Of course middle-aged and older folks make up most of the fans for games from the Famicom/Super Famicom/Mega Drive era

There's steady demand, so of course they'd release it — and the people making the release decisions are old enough now to be from that same generation anyway
61AnonymousSep 21, 2026 06:32
Without I, you can't fully appreciate what makes II great — nothing but bandwagon fans these days
79AnonymousSep 21, 2026 07:38
Re: #61
I'd say this relies on the earlier game way more than, say, playing Dragon Quest III without having played the older entries
68AnonymousSep 21, 2026 06:59
As a kid I picked it up used on a whim, and all I really remember is diving into some Mystery Dungeon-like place
73AnonymousSep 21, 2026 07:19
Reminds me of that time a band that didn't know about it ripped off II's battle theme and got called out for it
77AnonymousSep 21, 2026 07:30
Yuzuru Hanyu found out about the port and is losing it…

Re: #73 Super Robot Wars K ripped off the track and producer Terada apologized
75AnonymousSep 21, 2026 07:25
Why was Yuzuru Hanyu watching this live lol
82AnonymousSep 21, 2026 07:40
Re: #75
You wouldn't watch a PC Gaming Show unless you already knew about it beforehand
76AnonymousSep 21, 2026 07:25
#1 trending lmao
89AnonymousSep 21, 2026 08:14
Yeah yeah, fake news, sure…
Wait, seriously?! Even a plain port would be a blessing
96AnonymousSep 21, 2026 08:29
Re: #89
If it's gonna get remastered like the Torneko games, I'd rather just have a straight port
93AnonymousSep 21, 2026 08:25
'On the level of Chrono Trigger'? Seriously?
So that means it's better than SaGa or Seiken Densetsu?
95AnonymousSep 21, 2026 08:27
Re: #93
If we're just talking about II, yeah, it's better
Though honestly those other series only ride on the Square brand name to begin with — they're not that great on their own
103AnonymousSep 21, 2026 08:41
Re: #93
Chrono Trigger had been forgotten by the public until overseas media hyped it back up and everyone jumped on the bandwagon, whereas this one's been known as a hidden gem since release — you can't really compare the two
113AnonymousSep 21, 2026 09:01
Re: #93
Because it's a knockoff
106AnonymousSep 21, 2026 08:53
Wait, isn't this not even Square Enix to begin with?
107AnonymousSep 21, 2026 08:56
Re: #106
It's been Tai♩to since back then
So there was probably some "eh, might be a dud" wariness because of that
Brand loyalty was way stronger back then, so games from minor companies got dumped into the bargain bin fast

Background and Key Points of Discussion

Estpolis Denki is an RPG series released by Taito (now under Square Enix) for the Super Famicom in 1993 and 1995, with the second entry long regarded as a hidden classic passed down by word of mouth. This new port stands out for launching simultaneously across multiple platforms — Switch, Switch 2, PS5, and Steam. Alongside praise from longtime fans, the thread also aired concerns about the broader trend of retro RPG ports in recent years. Specifically, some pointed out that the same core of buyers may just keep purchasing these titles without the fanbase actually growing, and speculated that development and sales decisions are increasingly being made by people from that same generation. Meanwhile, the comparison to Chrono Trigger drew pushback too, with some arguing the two titles gained recognition through very different paths, making a simple ranking of one over the other questionable.
