Kojima Hideo: “The Reason I Teamed Up With Xbox Is the Same Vision as Nintendo’s” — 5ch: “What Even Is That Vision?”

From our other sites

The story

Game director Hideo Kojima, in an interview prompted by his own post on X, explained why he’s once again teamed up with Xbox. According to him, it’s not simply about getting funding for game development — Xbox is a partner that shares his “vision for the future,” one that includes expanding into new IP through film and anime as well as games. On 5ch, reactions ranged from blunt confusion (“I have no idea what Xbox’s vision even is”) to speculation that the deal came about because Kojima himself talked Xbox executives into it rather than the other way around, along with comparisons of how Nintendo, Sony, and Xbox each handle film and anime expansion.

You posted on X that you're teaming up with Xbox again as a partner who shares a "vision for the future" — what did that vision actually look like?
The biggest thing is that they're not just thinking about funding games. They're thinking about movies and anime too. It's really more about IP — the idea of "let's build new IP." In other words, the scale of it is bigger. There aren't that many other publishers or developers out there with that kind of vision.

What even is Xbox's "vision"?

I genuinely don't get it

Re: #5
Microsoft's vision
7AnonymousSep 20, 2026 23:04
Movies, movies, and nothing but movies
47AnonymousSep 20, 2026 23:33
Honestly, I think Sony has the same vision
they're just too weak to actually pull it off

Re: #7
Ah, that's what he means
Re: #47
Sony's strong across movies, music, and anime content
Their old style was using content to lure people into buying hardware,
but the platform side isn't working out for them anymore
For games it's the opposite — content is weak, but the platform alone is doing fine
10AnonymousSep 20, 2026 23:06
Yeah, no wonder nobody wants to make games for a platform with fans like this

14AnonymousSep 20, 2026 23:09
Sorry, I don't want to be lumped in with creeps, but did MS actually do something wrong here?

The Minecraft and Fallout movies both did well

I gave him a hard time for staying silent on X after going to see the Mario movie, figuring he thought it was boring — turns out he was just jealous. What a letdown.
Not buying it even if it goes multiplatform

Re: #27
It's not coming to PS, so don't sweat it
33AnonymousSep 20, 2026 23:21
After reading the interview,
it wasn't MS who came asking —
Kojima talked Asha into letting him put it on Xbox himself

Is there really anyone dumb enough to think this is coming to PS5?

Re: #33
Whether the game even comes out at all is shaky, isn't it?
There's a real chance it gets cancelled
50AnonymousSep 20, 2026 23:35
No way Nintendo picks him up
a money pit like that
51AnonymousSep 20, 2026 23:38
Re: #50
Nintendo would hate a guy like Kojima more than anyone
he thinks of himself as some kind of artist
61AnonymousSep 20, 2026 23:47
Sony's supposedly the company best suited to media-mix expansion,
but they're not doing the kind of media mix people actually want — just hoarding their content instead. Watching from the outside, it's such a waste
103AnonymousSep 21, 2026 00:25
Re: #61
Sony's internal divisions don't get along, so it's probably just not happening for them
62AnonymousSep 20, 2026 23:47
Nintendo wouldn't suddenly make a movie out of a brand-new IP
They only make movies or theme parks as part of leveraging IP that's already popular

Completely different from Kojima, who seems to think making a movie-like game makes it easier to turn into an actual movie
71AnonymousSep 20, 2026 23:53
Re: #62
Kojima's approach is actually closer to Level-5's
72AnonymousSep 20, 2026 23:54
Because he insists "the IP is mine," the Death Stranding movie is being made by A24 with no Sony Pictures involvement
His idea of an ideal deal is "just hand over the money and let me do whatever I want across other platforms and movies," so no sane company is going to agree to that
78AnonymousSep 20, 2026 23:56
Re: #72
A24's Backrooms was directed by a 20-year-old and was a massive success
Director Kojima's probably feeling the heat
74AnonymousSep 20, 2026 23:54
So there were no concrete talks with Nintendo at all…
meaning it's all just Kojima's fantasy?
80AnonymousSep 20, 2026 23:57
Re: #74
If he went to Nintendo, 90% of his cutscenes would get cut lol
82AnonymousSep 20, 2026 23:58
Kojima's just a terrible fit for Nintendo
they don't pay much and they're strict about deadlines
stingy Kyoto merchants through and through
86AnonymousSep 21, 2026 00:02
Re: #82
They worked together back on Twin Snakes
Just call up Ryuhei Kitamura again
83AnonymousSep 21, 2026 00:00
This is basically him saying, without saying it, "Nintendo and MS are the kind of companies I like — unlike Sony" lol. Stop dragging Nintendo into this
97AnonymousSep 21, 2026 00:15
Re: #83
He's probably just eaten up with jealousy over Miyamoto — the Mario movie was a worldwide hit and expectations for the Zelda movie are sky-high too

Well, if a game creator's going to be involved with a movie, that kind of hands-off distance is probably the way to go
89AnonymousSep 21, 2026 00:05
Palworld isn't even a Microsoft thing
94AnonymousSep 21, 2026 00:10
Re: #89
Grandpa, did you forget the Minecraft movie was a smash hit last year?
Why are you even bringing up Palworld lol
92AnonymousSep 21, 2026 00:09
Sony did that Concord short drama thing too, didn't they?! (referring to Concord, Sony's short-lived hero shooter)
95AnonymousSep 21, 2026 00:12
Re: #92
Comparing it to the almighty Mario and Minecraft
that's one seriously bold IP
truly the future of PlayStation
110AnonymousSep 21, 2026 00:32
If MS drops him too, about the only move left is falling back to mobile and getting Apple as a sponsor
Nintendo definitely isn't picking him up
118AnonymousSep 21, 2026 00:40
Re: #110
Big-name auteur-type developers from third parties — companies probably learned their lesson with Kamiya
a lot of them are strong-willed and don't play well with others
well, Game Freak's kind of like that too, but they're a collective, so it's more just issuing revision notes on whatever gets submitted
112AnonymousSep 21, 2026 00:34
People used to tell him "lol just hurry up and make the movie already" —
was his actual plan to just keep making games and wait for a movie offer to come knocking eventually?
113AnonymousSep 21, 2026 00:36
Re: #112
He's actually turning down plenty of offers to direct movies as it is
117AnonymousSep 21, 2026 00:39
Couldn't he have just had his Hollywood star buddies invest instead…?

Background and key points of this topic

Kojima Productions, led by Hideo Kojima, has so far developed the Death Stranding series for PlayStation, but in 2022 it also announced a new-title partnership with Xbox Game Studios, part of a broader recent shift toward a stance not tied to any single platform. His latest remarks frame Xbox not simply as a source of funding, but as a partner for IP expansion that extends into film and anime — a shared “vision for the future.” The thread split over what exactly this “vision” refers to, and over how to read reports that the deal came about through Kojima approaching Microsoft rather than the other way around. Since Sony has its own media-mix strategy, there’s no real evidence beyond Kojima’s own comments explaining why he singled out Nintendo and Xbox for comparison — much of the thread’s reaction amounted to speculation.
