  • Garshi: ‘There’s a Reason TV Won’t Use YouTubers’ — 5ch Users Split

Garshi, a former upper-house lawmaker now working as an influencer and rakugo performer, posted his personal take on X on October 3: “There’s definitely a reason TV won’t use YouTubers or influencers.” The post sparked a thread on 5ch’s Geisupo Sokuho+ board, where posters floated several theories: “YouTubers who can’t edit their own footage are hard to use on TV,” “the TV industry is a closed village that won’t accept outsiders,” and “they’re wary of ties to anti-social forces (organized crime).” Meanwhile, the claim that “even HIKAKIN couldn’t cut it on TV” drew pushback, with some arguing “there’s no way Japan’s No. 1 streamer, HIKAKIN, is boring” — leaving opinions split on how to judge a YouTuber’s actual talent.

Garshi shares his take: “There’s a reason TV won’t use YouTubers”

Garshi, an influencer and former upper-house lawmaker who also works as a rakugo performer, updated X on the 3rd, sharing his personal views on YouTubers and television.

In his morning post, Garshi began: “There’s definitely a reason TV won’t use YouTubers or influencers… Good morning!”

YouTubers are only entertaining to the people already subscribed to their channel — everyone else just goes 'who? huh?'

Because some of them are seriously tangled up with anti-social forces (organized crime).

TV is a closed village too — it's tough for outsiders to fit in. But YouTubers and influencers form their own cliques and build their own closed villages too, don't they?

Well, it's become obvious they're useless on TV. At the end of the day, the people who appear on TV are a bunch of weirdos who've been specifically polished for the medium.
YouTuber logic just doesn't apply there.
    25AnonymousOct 3, 2026 18:15
The TV industry really is a closed village. They act like they're some kind of privileged class. Even if outsiders get in, they just get discriminated against. Even athletes end up getting mocked by comedians and that's it.
    27AnonymousOct 3, 2026 18:16
Unless you're something really special, TV isn't going to edit the show around you — so an ordinary amateur just isn't interesting to begin with.
    28AnonymousOct 3, 2026 18:17
People who watch TV probably aren't interested in YouTubers anyway.
    29AnonymousOct 3, 2026 18:17

Lol, TV loyalists acting tough. Those guys are completely boring online.
    32AnonymousOct 3, 2026 18:18
It mostly comes down to editing style, right? On YouTube you can edit your own content, but with a TV show you can't. Whether it's a video or a TV program, how entertaining it is ultimately comes down heavily to the editing.

    Re: #32
According to Takemoto, the well-known wild-foraging YouTuber (known for eating foraged and unusual foods), TV stations are skilled at editing things into exactly the shape they want. Takemoto's work originally has goals like promoting the culling of invasive species by turning them into food, and preserving regional food cultures — but TV appearances often turn him into just 'the YouTuber who likes eating gross stuff.' He also takes the stance that 'anyone who doesn't want to eat insects doesn't have to,' but somehow on TV he ends up cast as an advocate who force-feeds insects to people who don't want them. So he said he's done with TV.

That's just something TV people believe — viewers don't really make that distinction. In fact, even celebrities and talents get ratings just as low as YouTubers do.

TV viewers are mostly elderly, so they care about this stuff a lot. They're also the ones who love second- and third-generation celebrities — they want to know exactly whose kid you are and where you come from.
    74AnonymousOct 3, 2026 18:50
I think it's really just that TV is a vested interest of the talent agencies. It's not about being more skilled or avoiding trouble — if anything, it's the agency talents who cause more problems.

    Re: #74
Nah, there was a YouTuber boom for a while and a bunch of them showed up on TV, but overall they were underwhelming. They all just have bad comedic timing, somehow.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Garshi is a former upper-house lawmaker who was expelled from the Diet over remarks he made on YouTube, and he now works as an influencer and rakugo performer. Given that background, his latest post can be read as a wry jab at “the TV side.” In the thread, posters offered several competing explanations without reaching a consensus on which was the real reason: a technical one (YouTubers can’t edit their own TV segments, so they don’t fit the format), a structural one (the TV industry is a privileged “closed village” that shuts out outsiders), and a risk-management one (concerns over background and associations). The sharpest disagreement centered on the claim that “HIKAKIN didn’t work on TV,” which drew pushback questioning whether someone with one of the biggest track records as a streamer in Japan can really be dismissed as “boring.” A point readers may easily misread is that “doesn’t work on TV” here is about ratings and fit with TV’s style of production, not a blanket verdict on a YouTuber’s actual talent. Some pointed to counterexamples like Soshina, who has found success in both worlds, underscoring that the thread’s real tension is over how “success” is even defined across different media.

  • Japanese Sweet Shop Bankruptcies on Pace for Record High in 2026 — 5ch: ‘Some Shops Survive Without Customers’

According to a survey by Teikoku Databank, a credit research firm, bankruptcies of Japanese confectionery (wagashi) shops in Japan from January to September 2026 reached 22 cases (legal insolvency proceedings involving liabilities of 10 million yen or more), putting 2026 on pace to surpass 2025 — previously the worst year on record. The report points to a combination of factors: profit pressure from rising raw material costs, growing difficulty passing down craftsmanship as artisans age, the burden of capital investment in shops and factories, and the weight of repaying loans taken out during the COVID-19 pandemic. On 5ch, opinions clashed between posters arguing “there’s no demand for wagashi anymore, and the flavors haven’t evolved,” and others pointing out that “some shops stay in business through wholesale to department stores and supermarkets even when there’s no one in the store,” sparking a debate over the real state of the industry.

Released 7:03 AM, Saturday, Oct 3

    Teikoku Databank

From January to September 2026, 22 “wagashi (Japanese confectionery) shop” bankruptcies occurred (legal insolvency proceedings involving liabilities of 10 million yen or more). This already surpasses 2025, the previous record year, putting the pace on track to set a new all-time high. Rising raw material costs are squeezing profits, while the aging of artisans is making it harder to pass down traditional techniques. On top of that, the burden of capital investment for new shops and factories, plus the weight of repaying loans taken out during the COVID-19 pandemic, are compounding to make the business environment increasingly harsh.

Lol, a guy who judges sweets by price-per-gram

Background and key points of debate

Teikoku Databank’s tally is limited to legal insolvency proceedings involving liabilities of 10 million yen or more, so it’s worth noting this doesn’t capture smaller closures or shops that simply stopped operating quietly. The four factors the report cites — rising raw material costs, aging artisans, the burden of capital investment, and repayment of pandemic-era loans — point to a structural problem that can’t be explained away by a simple “falling out of love with wagashi” narrative. The thread’s disagreement centered on whether to blame the rise in bankruptcies on wagashi’s flavor and weak demand, or to treat it as a distribution-structure issue. Those on the latter side pointed to examples like Minamoto Kitchoan, where shops stay in business through wholesale to department stores and supermarkets even with few customers showing up in person, casting doubt on the simple equation “no customers = going under.” At the same time, some posters noted that Western-style confectioners are shutting down at a similar clip, so whether this is a problem unique to the wagashi industry or a trend across the confectionery business as a whole can’t be settled by the thread discussion alone.

  • Autumn Special of ‘Celebrity Rating Check’ Draws Just 10.8% — 5ch: ‘We Picked the Men’s Soccer Game Instead’

The September 26 broadcast of “Celebrity Rating Check: Autumn 3.5-Hour Special” drew a 10.8% rating, the lowest since the autumn special began in 2018. News reports claimed “GACKT’s absence isn’t the cause,” but on 5ch, users pointed to the men’s soccer international tournament airing opposite it, as well as the 3.5-hour runtime being a poor fit for the streaming era. Some also voiced distrust over GACKT’s long winning streak on the show, leaving the real cause of the ratings drop up for debate.

Autumn “Rating Check” ratings hit an all-time low — the “convincing reason” why it’s not about “GACKT’s absence”

Did a lot of people think a “Rating Check” without GACKT just wasn’t worth watching? The “Celebrity Rating Check: Autumn 3.5-Hour Special” (produced by TV Asahi/Asahi Broadcasting), aired on September 26, finished with a rating of 10.8% (Video Research, Kanto region, household ratings; same below).

It’s far from a low number, but it’s reportedly the lowest ever for the “Autumn Special” since it began in 2018. Is GACKT really to blame?

It's not about whether GACKT's there or not, it's about whether it's New Year's.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The “Autumn 3.5-Hour Special” is a signature installment of Rating Check that’s been running since 2018, where celebrities guess whether wines, foods, and other items are genuine or fake. This time’s 10.8% rating is the lowest ever for this particular slot, but it still clears double digits for a primetime variety show, so it’s hardly a dramatic collapse. What split opinion on the thread was the theory that “the numbers dropped because GACKT wasn’t on” — many pointed instead to the men’s soccer international tournament airing opposite it, and to the 3.5-hour runtime itself becoming harder to sit through these days. At the same time, plenty of users remain skeptical about GACKT’s long winning streak, so opinions on the cast and format are still split. The thread’s reactions also highlight how hard it is for news coverage to pin a ratings swing on any single cause.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Entertainment/Sports News+) thread “[Entertainment] Autumn “Rating Check” rating 10.8% — an all-time low, but a convincing reason why it’s not about GACKT’s absence.”

  • Suzu Hirose Says ‘Friendship Between Men and Women Exists’ — 5ch Fires Back: ‘Not If It’s You, Suzu’

At a pre-release event for the film “Nee, Hoshi no Gotoku” (You, Like the Stars), it was reported that Suzu Hirose responded to a high school girl’s love-life question by saying, “I believe friendship between men and women does exist.” The film, co-starring Ryusei Yokohama, opens on the 9th. The remark set off a head-on clash on 5ch between the general view that “friendship is possible as long as neither side feels any lust for the other” and the dissenting opinion that “there’s no way it’s free of ulterior motives if the other person is Suzu Hirose” — a view based purely on her looks. The debate spread without either side ever really meeting in the middle.

Suzu Hirose gives a heartfelt answer to a high schooler’s love troubles

“Putting it into words is hard, but it really matters”

Actor Suzu Hirose took the stage on the 3rd at a pre-release event for the film “Nee, Hoshi no Gotoku” (You, Like the Stars, opening on the 9th, directed by Michihito Fujii), in which she co-stars with Ryusei Yokohama. She answered questions from attendees, sharing her views on life and love.

    19AnonymousOct 3, 2026 18:14
If she thinks he's just a friend, confessing to him will settle that pretty quick.
    20AnonymousOct 3, 2026 18:14
    Well, people have different types.
There are men and women who feel zero sexual pull even toward people everyone agrees are good-looking.
If two people like that happen to click, friendship between the sexes can absolutely work.
    21AnonymousOct 3, 2026 18:14
I won't deny friendship could accidentally spring up between a high school girl and an older guy.
But a guy who deliberately goes out of his way to get close to a high schooler has ulterior motives like 100% of the time.
    37AnonymousOct 3, 2026 18:17
    Re: #21
My point exactly — unless he's a lolicon (attracted to young girls), a guy has no reason to actively seek out a high schooler in the first place.
    22AnonymousOct 3, 2026 18:14
    Fine for you, maybe,
but the real question is whether your partner would be okay with it.

If neither one feels any lust for the other, then sure, friendship exists.
    26AnonymousOct 3, 2026 18:15
    No way it exists.

I'll say it flat out: 100%.

    35AnonymousOct 3, 2026 18:17
Only people who'd be totally fine with their own partner spending the night alone with someone of the opposite sex get to claim 'friendship between men and women exists.'
    36AnonymousOct 3, 2026 18:17
I think it exists, but it's way more fragile than a same-sex friendship. Not that I'd know, though.
    39AnonymousOct 3, 2026 18:17
Mutual feelings leading straight into dating is rare.
Most relationships start from one-sided feelings, so just confess already.
    40AnonymousOct 3, 2026 18:18
A guy's real bottom line is whether it'll eventually lead to sex.
So if the woman he's hooking up with has a body that turns him on, he'll go for it no matter how bad her personality is.
    That's just what men are.
But if he's genuinely drawn to her personality and wants to be with her all the time, that's already love.
    41AnonymousOct 3, 2026 18:18

    54AnonymousOct 3, 2026 18:20

If she's cute, it doesn't exist; if she's unattractive, it does.

Background and Key Points of the Debate

“Nee, Hoshi no Gotoku” (You, Like the Stars) co-stars Hirose with Ryusei Yokohama, and the pre-release event included an audience Q&A segment. Hirose’s comment that “friendship between men and women exists” wasn’t aimed at anyone in particular — it was a general opinion offered while answering a high schooler’s question, though the headline alone makes it easy to misread as “Hirose’s personal view on dating her.” What split the thread was a head-on clash between two camps: (1) the general argument that “friendship without ulterior motives is possible,” and (2) the counterargument, based purely on looks, that “anyone good-looking enough will always provoke ulterior motives” — and it was the latter camp’s replies, naming Hirose directly and flatly declaring it “impossible,” that drew the most support. The men-and-women-friendship debate is a recurring theme on 5ch, but what made this round distinctive was that a well-known actress made the remark in a public setting, blending abstract argument with application to one specific real person and making the discussion especially hard to reconcile.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Geisports Breaking News+) thread “[Entertainment] Suzu Hirose: “I believe friendship between men and women exists” — gives heartfelt answer to high schooler’s love troubles.”

  • Trying to Speed Up Indoor Rakuten Mobile Reception — 5ch: ‘Gotta Respect That Dedication’

Rakuten Mobile is said to have weak indoor signal due to its relatively small number of base stations. A thread appeared on 5ch started by a resident who tried to fix this. The original poster used a 10-meter LAN cable and an adapter to tether a phone placed outside the front door to a PC indoors via a wired connection, but the speed didn’t improve as much as hoped. The thread then split into debate over whether phones and home routers differ in signal reception performance, and how much money is worth spending on a fix.

    So I bought a 10m LAN cable (1,000 yen)
    and a LAN-to-USB-C adapter (3,000 yen),
hung a bag on the front door's doorknob, put my phone inside it, ran the cable through the mail slot, and gave it a try.

    Result: no speed gain.

    Read the thread properly.
    The indoor signal is weak.
To fix it, you receive the signal outside,
and then run a wire to the PC far away.
For that, you need to use a crazy-expensive 'active repeater cable.'
    That's the key point.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Rakuten Mobile is still in the process of building out its own base stations even after the end of its KDDI roaming agreement, and there reportedly remain spots — even in urban areas — deep inside buildings or underground where signal has trouble reaching. What caught people’s attention in the thread was a report that a phone could pull over 400Mbps down indoors, yet wired tethering to a PC dropped the speed significantly — a phenomenon that happens because phones and home routers (fixed devices) differ in antenna setup and reception sensitivity, meaning results won’t necessarily be the same for every device or location. The thread also flagged a failed attempt using a cheap adapter as a cautionary example, pointing out that extending the distance in practice actually requires a power-amplifying ‘active repeater cable’ — a detail that’s easy to miss if you assume simply running a longer cable will do the trick.

  • Carp Stage Late Comeback to Beat Hanshin 6-4 as Nakamura Shosei’s Go-Ahead Hit Delays Tigers’ Pennant Party

The Hanshin–Carp game ended in a 6-4 comeback win for the Carp, extending their winning streak. Hanshin jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning, but the Carp struck back in the 2nd and 3rd to take the lead, with Nakamura Shosei starring on 3 hits and 2 RBIs, including the go-ahead timely hit. That means Hanshin’s pennant-clinching has been put off. The thread was split on everything from leaving the starter in too long and the pinch-hitting calls, to questionable umpiring and plans for next season’s roster.

If the Giants were merely even with Hanshin head-to-head, they'd have won the pennant easily anyway.
Though a Giants team that's been getting crushed by Hanshin doesn't deserve the title either.

    Background and Talking Points

Hanshin lost to Hiroshima in regulation, pushing back the pennant-clinching decision even though their magic number had already been lit. Despite grabbing a 4-0 lead in the first inning, they let it slip away, and the thread was heavy with criticism of the starting pitcher and bullpen usage and the pinch-hitting decisions, though some posters pushed back in defense of manager Fujikawa, leaving opinion split. Several exchanges also centered on close calls — worth noting for readers is that NPB has not fully rolled out automated ball-strike assistance (the so-called “robot umpire”), so judgment on borderline pitches still comes down entirely to the umpire’s eye. Some posts questioned why regulars like Kinami and Itohara keep getting everyday at-bats, with a recurring view that this year’s Hanshin leans heavily on the individual power of its top-of-the-order hitters. Other comments tied the situation to the Giants’ results, framing the “delay” in terms of how many games remain.

    Background and Points of Debate

It’s unclear from Rakushingo’s post alone exactly who he had in mind, but on 5ch, voices saying “phone calls are a hassle” and “I use text because I want to keep a record” stood out, with repeated observations that which method is more efficient depends on the other person and the nature of the matter. Text exchanges have the advantage of leaving a record, but can also take longer to convey what’s needed, so it’s not a topic that can be reduced to a simple either-or. The thread also floated a generational theory about a “phone-hating generation,” but there was pushback noting that it’s often the people who are bad at writing who end up relying on phone calls in the end — suggesting generational differences alone don’t fully explain it. The choice of communication method also seems shaped by one’s relationship with the other person and past experience, reflecting an underlying difference in values between prioritizing a record and prioritizing efficiency.

  • Pink Noise to Flush “Brain Trash”? MIT Runs Human Experiment — 5ch Reacts: “That Word Hits Way Too Hard, LOL”

A research team including scientists from MIT has published a paper in Science Translational Medicine testing, in humans, whether playing sound timed to brain-wave activity during sleep can strengthen the flow of cerebrospinal fluid that clears waste from the brain. The sound used was “pink noise” — similar to rain or a waterfall — played in sync with the peaks of slow brain waves. On the 5ch thread, discussion initially centered not on the research itself but on how the term “pink noise” sounded suspiciously like something risqué, before settling down once posters realized it actually refers to natural sounds like rain or a babbling stream. Meanwhile, some questioned whether the study’s method — delivering sound at pinpoint timing while simultaneously monitoring brain waves and fMRI — could really be replicated at home.

It's genuinely annoying how saying "pink noise" to a normal person gets treated like a dirty joke.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The brain’s waste-clearing mechanism during sleep is known as the “glymphatic system,” thought to work via cerebrospinal fluid circulating through brain tissue. This study tested whether a “closed-loop” auditory stimulus — sound timed to the peaks of slow waves (slow brain-wave oscillations) during sleep — could artificially boost this cerebrospinal fluid flow, verifying the effect with fMRI; it was published in Science Translational Medicine. What split opinion on the thread was whether this could be replicated at home: the study delivered sound at precisely targeted moments while monitoring brain waves and fMRI in real time, so it’s not necessarily the same as simply playing rain or waterfall sounds on a loop. Posters also repeatedly noted that the term “pink noise” sounds suggestive and invites misunderstanding, but it’s actually an acoustics term for a category of random noise whose intensity rises as frequency falls (a “1/f fluctuation” pattern) — just one type alongside white noise and brown noise. Some commercial sleep-aid devices and apps already use sounds like these, but it hasn’t been shown whether consumer products can replicate the brain-wave-synced stimulation used in this study.

  • Toyotaro’s Latest Art Draws Backlash — 5ch: ‘Toriyama Was a Billion Times Better’

A thread on 5ch’s “Live Anything Goes” board (なんでも実況G) sparked criticism over the artwork in the latest chapter of “Dragon Ball Super,” drawn by manga artist Toyotaro. Commenters compared it to Akira Toriyama’s style, piling on with comments like “it lacks punch” and “it looks phoned-in.” Some argued that criticism is fair game since this is an official successor work, not a fan comic, while others fired back that if you don’t like it, just don’t watch it. The discussion expanded to cover comparisons with Toriyama’s own late-career art, along with testimony that Toyotaro’s work was actually good back in his doujin (fan-comic) days, as posters debated what’s really behind the apparent drop in quality.

    74AnonymousOct 3, 2026 17:13
Part of it is that Toriyama was just too much of a genius, but sadly, it feels like Toyotaro has actually gotten worse with age.

    Re: #74
Probably because back in his doujin days he was drawing for fun.
    He's clearly declined since then.
    77AnonymousOct 3, 2026 17:15
    This one's rough too.
Toyotaro just doesn't have the talent for manga.

More than the panel layout, what really bugs me is calling the fight with Goku a "match" (試合), even though it's framed as training.
Something like "showdown" (勝負) would fit way better.

All you ever post are images you dug up from somewhere.

Toriyama's beam-clash scenes are genuinely artistic, so damn cool.

The point is: you took over Dragon Ball, so "I'm not motivated so I'll just phone it in, don't like it don't watch it" doesn't fly here.

    Re: #91
Did he actually say himself, "I'm not motivated so I'm phoning it in"?

Switching IDs over and over — pretty pathetic.

Background and Key Points of the Debate

Akira Toriyama passed away in March 2024, and since then the manga version of “Dragon Ball Super” has been continued by Toyotaro. The thread’s remark that “serialization stopped after Toriyama died and then resumed” reflects that timeline. The debate split into roughly two camps. The first was whether this can simply be waved off with “if you don’t like it, don’t watch it” — many pushed back hard, arguing that since this is an official successor work rather than a fan comic, criticism naturally comes with the territory. The second concerned the cause of the apparent drop in art quality: testimony that Toyotaro’s work was good back in his amateur days fueled suspicion that a heavy workload from serialization and anime-related work, or simply a lack of motivation, might be to blame — alongside a counterargument that he’s merely being compared to an exceptionally, uniquely gifted artist in Toriyama. It’s also worth noting that some say even Toriyama himself saw his own art decline in his later years, so readers should keep in mind that assessments can swing heavily depending on which point in an artist’s career is used as the benchmark.

  • Actress Mai Miyajima Announces Hiatus — Fans Baffled by “Deep Apology for Past Conduct”

Actress Mai Miyajima (40), who has appeared in eight NHK morning dramas including “Come Come Everybody” and “Carnation,” announced on October 3, 2026 that she would be taking a hiatus. The Sports Hochi article included the phrase “I deeply apologize for my past conduct,” but gave no specifics about what had actually happened. On the 5ch “Entertainment/Sports News+” board, confused reactions piled up, with posts like “this makes no sense” and “isn’t this a clickbait headline?” Many speculated the real cause was exhaustion from childcare, or the difficulty with interpersonal communication Miyajima herself has mentioned before.

An apology? Did she do something bad? I read the whole article and still have no clue.
    7AnonymousOct 3, 2026 16:20
    Huh.
Guess there's a follow-up story coming or something?

    Guess a scoop's coming later?

"Deeply apologize for past conduct" — from the thread title I figured she must've done something seriously awful,
but turns out she's probably just a bit depressed.
Don't know who she is, but no need to push yourself, take it easy and rest up.
    11AnonymousOct 3, 2026 16:21
Is this some kind of childcare-burnout story?
    20AnonymousOct 3, 2026 16:25
    Re: #11
Nah, I think it's just a throwaway opener and the article's just weirdly framing it this way for some reason…
    13AnonymousOct 3, 2026 16:21
    Makes no sense.
    Was she bullying someone?
    18AnonymousOct 3, 2026 16:25
    Re: #1
    She's 40, right?
She's not an idol, so you'd think it'd take something pretty serious for her to go on hiatus, no?
    19AnonymousOct 3, 2026 16:25
It's probably a mental health thing and they slap on a headline like this. Rough.
    21AnonymousOct 3, 2026 16:26
Didn't need to make the thread title sound like she screwed up when she didn't.

For some reason she's the type who always fits the role of the heroine's friend in NHK Osaka ("BK")-produced morning dramas,
even though her actual part is totally different show to show.
    27AnonymousOct 3, 2026 16:28
    Re: #6
    No idea who she is.
Even with 8 shows under her belt, probably just extra-level roles.
    55AnonymousOct 3, 2026 16:53
    Re: #27
She's pretty well known among morning drama fans.
Plays those tragic, hard-luck roles alongside the lead and has real presence.
I'm a fan of hers too.
    28AnonymousOct 3, 2026 16:28
If she's from Gifu, why wasn't she in "Half Blue" (the morning drama set in Gifu)?
    29AnonymousOct 3, 2026 16:29
Maybe her face not quite clicking with any strong character is exactly why she's easy to cast?
    32AnonymousOct 3, 2026 16:30
Unless a power-harassment story drops later,
it's weird she'd bother putting out a comment like this.
    33AnonymousOct 3, 2026 16:30
Just blush about it whenever the flashback hits and don't worry about it the rest of the time.
    37AnonymousOct 3, 2026 16:33
A regular who nobody actually remembers
    — maybe that's a rare and valuable skill in itself as a performer.
    38AnonymousOct 3, 2026 16:34
    Wasn't she Mikio Osawa's ex-wife?
    Wait, hadn't she left showbiz?
    39AnonymousOct 3, 2026 16:34
"Deeply apologize for past conduct" — what's that even about?
    40AnonymousOct 3, 2026 16:35
So the reporter just oversold a clickbait title?
    42AnonymousOct 3, 2026 16:39
    What "past conduct" even?
Was she in juvenile detention as a teenager or something?
    60AnonymousOct 3, 2026 17:00
    Re: #42
Probably just what we're all casually doing in this very thread.
    43AnonymousOct 3, 2026 16:40
    Re: #1
With this thread title it reads like she caused some kind of trouble and is on hiatus because of it,
but that's not what the article says, right? Feels more like childcare exhaustion or something along those lines.
The original article's title is the same as this one, so I sense a bit of malicious framing in how it's being presented.
Well, that's about par for Sports Hochi I guess.
    44AnonymousOct 3, 2026 16:43
    Clickbait headline.
"I'm taking a hiatus" is clearly the actual point here.
    48AnonymousOct 3, 2026 16:46
Watching Showa-retro exploration videos is more fun than watching Peace-kun (the local celebrity swan/bird at Omiya Park) on YouTube anyway.
    49AnonymousOct 3, 2026 16:48
This girl worked part-time for ages at the Royal Host restaurant in Higashi-Tenma.
Ridiculously cute, wore a name tag that said "Miyajima."
Happened to watch a morning drama one day and was shocked to see her in it.
    85AnonymousOct 3, 2026 17:32
The hiatus announcement and the apology before it
    have zero connection, lol.
If you try to connect them, it sounds like she's saying she's taking a hiatus because she messed up some kind of relationship.
    87AnonymousOct 3, 2026 17:38
    Re: #85
"Sorry for all the trouble I've caused.
I'm going to take a break here."

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Mai Miyajima has appeared in eight NHK morning dramas, including “Come Come Everybody” and “Carnation,” but mostly in supporting roles, so there’s a fair number of viewers who recognize her face but can’t place her name. This announcement appears to be a comment originating from her talent agency, and because Sports Hochi used that wording verbatim as its headline, the abstract phrase “deeply apologize for my past conduct” ended up standing out on its own, stripped of context. The article body itself contains no description of any specific scandal or trouble, and the reason for the hiatus is never stated outright. Opinion in the thread split over whether to read that phrase as “a confession of some scandal” or as “just a boilerplate expression of consideration,” with the latter view — that the hiatus is more likely driven by childcare exhaustion or interpersonal stress — winning out. Since judging by the headline alone invites readers to imagine a serious incident that doesn’t match the substance of the piece, the lack of concrete facts in the body is exactly where readers are most likely to be misled.
