  • Hiroshima Manager Arai Apologizes to Fans Over Scandal: ‘We Will Be Reborn Next Season’

On October 3, the Hiroshima Carp came back to beat the Hanshin Tigers 6-4 in their final home game of the season at Mazda Stadium. In the post-game ceremony, manager Takahiro Arai (49) apologized to fans over an in-team scandal, saying, “We the Carp will be reborn next season.” On the 5ch thread (Geisoku Sokuho+), discussion centered less on the apology itself than on claims that nothing will really change unless the team’s upper management — owner Motoo Matsuda and executive director Seimei Suzuki — changes too, with debate also continuing over how the team should handle the player said to be at the center of the scandal.

Well, but it's precisely because he's someone with a track record of sketchy behavior that he ended up photographed getting chummy with anti-social types like drug dealers — and conversely, there's no going after people who don't have photos like that floating around.

And someone who had ties to anti-social forces but still held a press conference with that kind of attitude is, by any measure, a rotten orange (a bad apple that spoils the whole bunch). Now that they've managed to push a player like that out, I think the atmosphere will improve at least a little.

If the team had just taken the lead right away — investigated, made it public, and sent him down to the minors — I don't think this would've blown up this big.
Old-school companies especially love to cover things up, which just drags the news cycle out and ends up handing the tabloids more material, so the team winds up taking the maximum amount of damage in the end.

If they'd dropped the announcement and the punishment themselves right at the start, the initial hit would've been strong, but the news value would've faded fast after that, so the overall damage would've been smaller.

Background and Key Points of This Story

Manager Takahiro Arai’s apology came in response to an “in-team scandal,” but the original article itself never actually spells out what that scandal involved, and the thread’s discussion centered mainly on frustration with the player’s own conduct and with how the front office handled things. Where opinion split was over the question of who should actually be held responsible: many argued that a manager bowing his head alone won’t prevent a repeat unless management itself changes too, pointing to the owning family said to have transferred its shares to the city of Hiroshima, and to Seimei Suzuki, who has held the executive director post for years. On the other hand, almost no one spoke up for the player said to be at the center of it, with some even arguing that the manager’s leniency helped make him worse. The article doesn’t spell out how far “we will be reborn” actually extends into concrete organizational change, so whether next season’s roster moves and front-office shake-up really follow through looks to be the thing worth watching.

  • Nintendo’s ‘Kiddie’ Remark Still Gets Dragged Up Even in the Reiwa Era — 5ch: ‘It’s Not Going to Just Disappear’

A thread titled “Nintendo fans are still dragging up the ‘kiddie’ remark even in the Reiwa era” popped up on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board. It focuses on how digs once thrown by rival camps — like “the DS is for kiddies” — are still being used as ammunition in console-war flame wars well into the Reiwa era. The thread runs through a string of predictions that were proven wrong one after another, like “Elden Ring will never come to Switch,” while also throwing in a comparison of Switch 2 vs. PS5 sales figures, spiraling into an endless back-and-forth over which console is really “for kids.”

'Resident Evil 9 will never come! Snubbed, snubbed, lol!' → It came out, and a port of the previous game got confirmed too
'Pragmata will never come! Snubbed, snubbed!' → It came out, and they're even releasing an amiibo
'FF7 Remake will never come! Snubbed, snubbed!' → It came out
'Kingdom Hearts 4 will never come! Snubbed, snubbed!' → It's coming, and even the older games are getting proper download/physical versions instead of just a cloud version
'Wilds will never come, snubbed!' → It's coming, with a Deluxe pack too, for a limited-time price of 3,742 yen
'Even if Wilds comes, Ascendance sure won't! Switch 2 only gets vanilla Wilds!!' → It's coming
'Nintendo is sooo jealous of Chameleon!!! They'll probably patent-crush Chameleon just like they did with Palworld lmaooo' → It's coming. And by the way, on consoles it's Switch 2 exclusive
'W-well Persona 4 Reload flopped, so there's no way [Persona] 3 Reload is coming!!' → It's coming, and so is Persona 6

So at this point, the only things left to use as sticks to beat Switch with are 'Rinkane' (a game nickname) and GTA6

    98AnonymousOct 3, 2026 20:56
    Re: #97
That's exactly why PlayStation occupies the 'middle schooler' position

Background and Key Points of This Debate

The roots of the “kiddie” argument reportedly trace back to the mid-2000s standoff between the PSP, marketed toward adults, and the DS, marketed toward families — the thread itself quotes the era’s catchphrase, “PSP is for adults, DS is for kiddies.” Roughly 20 years on, this same label is still being recycled as a stock insult in online flame wars regardless of how much hardware specs or sales results have changed, as this thread demonstrates once again. Figures cited in the thread, such as PS5’s “roughly 96 million units sold,” are claims made on an anonymous message board, and readers should verify them against official figures themselves. It’s also worth noting a recurring feature of these kinds of threads: labels like “for kids” versus “for adults” tend to be used less to describe a game’s actual target age or genre, and more to justify whichever console someone happens to support.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Japan is competing at the Asian Games with a squad built mainly around its Olympic-generation players, treating it as part of its team-building effort for the Olympics — a squad that has already won this year’s U-21 Asian Cup. South Korea, meanwhile, tends to field a near-full-strength squad at the top of the age limit for this tournament, since a military-service exemption is on the line, so the two countries bring different motivations to the same event. The thread raised the point that ‘Korea has won every Japan-Korea final at this Asian Games so far,’ but that’s specific to this tournament and should be read separately from the two countries’ overall head-to-head record at the youth level. Comparisons of the coaches’ track records also came up, but it’s worth noting that results in age-restricted tournaments and results at the actual Olympics are judged on different scales.

  • Tigers’ Awkward “Pennant on Standby” Night: 5ch Live-Blogs the Giants Game — “If They’d Won, We Could’ve Been Drinking Ourselves Silly”

On October 3, 2026, the Yomiuri Giants faced the DeNA BayStars at Tokyo Dome. Earlier that day, the Hanshin Tigers had lost to the Hiroshima Carp, trimming their pennant-clinching magic number to 1 — leaving them in the unusual “championship on standby” position where a Giants loss or draw would hand them the title outright. On 5ch’s live-commentary thread, alongside speculation about the game’s outcome, talk also buzzed around tangential topics: the career of pitcher Karakawa, who is retiring at season’s end, and expectations for young prospect Kozono heading into next season. Opinions on Karakawa ranged from “he was an ace” to “younger fans probably don’t even know him,” with reactions splitting along generational lines.

Hound a Giants player for a two-shot Polaroid at Miyazaki Airport and you'll get arrested

Background and Key Points of This Topic

This particular Giants game drew attention because the Tigers found themselves in the unusual position of potentially clinching the pennant “if the Giants lose” — regardless of their own result that day — a rare setup even by NPB standards. Meanwhile, within the thread, the debate over whether Karakawa deserved a retirement ceremony threw up slightly inconsistent figures like “82 wins, 78 losses” and “80 career wins,” with posters’ memories not always lining up even as opinions were traded — a looseness typical of live-commentary threads. There were also posts harshly criticizing drafted players, but comments amounting to baseless mockery or personal insults aimed at specific players have been excluded from this article. Beyond the main game result, live-commentary threads tend to generate simultaneous chatter about front-office matters like retiring players and the fate of young prospects — a breadth of content that the thread title alone, “Giants Acting Manager Thread 163,” doesn’t really convey.

  • Ocarina of Time Remake vs. GTA6: Amazon Sales Rankings Split by Country

A comparison of country-by-country Amazon bestseller rankings for the “Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time” remake and “Grand Theft Auto VI” set off a lively debate on 5ch’s hardware/industry (geha) board. According to the posted figures, Ocarina of Time sits at No. 5 and GTA6 at No. 30 in the US, and Ocarina of Time leads at No. 2 in Japan — but in the UK and Germany, GTA6 comes out ahead, with results varying wildly by country. Some pointed out that differences in digital-download ratios and the timing of when sales get reflected in the rankings might explain the gap, and the thread split over which title could really be called the winner.

The only places GTA is competing with or beating Ocarina of Time on the Amazon ranking are the UK and developing countries — that's the usual pattern
Also, on an online-only retailer like Amazon, a code-in-a-box format isn't really at a disadvantage, since only customers who already have an internet connection shop there
At brick-and-mortar stores, a lot more customers have weak internet access, so the situation's different

    "Eventually," lol
    A once-in-13-years, $2 billion-budget blockbuster, and the best you've got is "it'll eventually outsell a mere remake"?

    lmaooo

Background and Key Points of the Debate

Amazon’s “bestseller ranking” is a snapshot of pre-order and purchase activity at a given moment — not a measure of actual units sold. As pointed out in the thread, Switch titles tend to have a high ratio of digital downloads, and the timing of when sales get reflected in the rankings differs by country, which is why a region like the UK can see its ranking diverge from what’s actually happening in stores. GTA6 is a blockbuster that, as of a July 2026 market survey, was forecast to sell on the order of 50 million units in its first week alone — which makes judging it purely by a momentary Amazon ranking a somewhat lopsided comparison to begin with. The thread’s disagreement came down to the fact that some countries, like the US and Japan, favored Ocarina of Time, while others, like the UK and Germany, favored GTA6 — so the conclusion changes entirely depending on whose numbers you take as the baseline. It’s not really a topic that can be settled with a simple “who won.”

  • Mini Truck with Overhanging Cargo Backs Into Parked Car at Lot — 5ch: ‘Okay, This One’s Just Sad’

A photo posted to 5ch’s Nandemo Jikkyo G board sparked a wide-ranging debate over fault ratios in a parking-lot collision. A kei (mini) truck carrying cargo — what looked like wooden beams — that jutted out past the truck bed backed into the rear of a parked car, and the image clearly shows the truck plowing into the stationary vehicle. While posters agreed from the start that “the truck is obviously at fault,” opinions split on several finer points: whether the driver was legally required to mark the protruding cargo with a red flag, whether a parking lot even counts as a “road” under traffic law, and whether the crash could have been avoided if the driver had been watching the backup monitor.

Since it's a parking lot and the other car was completely stationary, the fault ratio is obviously going to lean hard against the one who was moving.

Seems like overhanging cargo is supposed to be made visible, but if the truck driver had properly checked by eye while backing up, this probably wouldn't have happened — so I'd call it something like 40 (other car) to 60 (truck).
    80AnonymousOct 3, 2026 19:10

It's not a public road and the vehicle wasn't even moving, so the red marker isn't necessary.
    82AnonymousOct 3, 2026 19:12
The allowed overhang is up to 10% of the vehicle's length, so sticking out by around 50cm would require the vehicle to be at least 5 meters long.
Is a kei truck even 5 meters long?
    86AnonymousOct 3, 2026 19:13

Even if a car has one, plenty of people don't use it.
Not many people set it to display by default, and hitting the switch button is a hassle.

Background and Key Points of the Debate

Fault ratios are determined case by case based on the parties’ circumstances and the judgment of insurers or courts — they can’t be settled definitively from a photo alone. The “cargo can overhang up to 10% of the vehicle’s length” standard that came up in the thread is based on vehicle safety regulations for road transport, and it’s premised on driving on public roads. Whether that standard carries over directly to private property like a parking lot is inherently a case-by-case question, and the claim that “it’s not a road, so there’s no obligation to use a red cloth” isn’t a settled legal conclusion either. Whether the cargo stuck out past the white line isn’t a factor that directly determines the fault ratio either — it’s just one piece of situational information. The fault-ratio figures posters got by showing the photo to an AI chatbot are likewise only a rough reference point, not a legal basis for determining actual insurance grading or damages.

  • Panda-less Ueno Zoo Sees Visitor Numbers Plunge 20% — New Star Attraction Is the ‘Bird That Doesn’t Move,’ the Shoebill

Visitor numbers at Tokyo’s Ueno Zoo have been sliding since giant pandas Xiao Xiao and Lei Lei were returned to China at the end of January. Attendance from February to August this year dropped roughly 19% year-on-year, and the zoo has announced plans to promote the shoebill — known as “the bird that doesn’t move” — as its new star attraction. On 5ch, a thread debated candidates to replace the pandas, floating ideas like red pandas or a dinosaur exhibit, while others pointed out that shoebills actually move quite a bit in captivity, fueling further discussion.

Visitor numbers at Ueno Zoo (Taito Ward, Tokyo) have been falling since giant pandas Xiao Xiao and Lei Lei were returned to China and the zoo lost its pandas at the end of January. Attendance from February through August this year fell by about 20% compared with the same period last year. The zoo continues to search for solutions, including promoting the popular shoebill — known as “the bird that doesn’t move” — as a new star attraction. (By Yuka Isogawa)

Xiao Xiao and Lei Lei, who were born at Ueno Zoo and became popular for playfully frolicking together as twins, were last available for viewing on January 25. According to the Tokyo metropolitan government, visitor numbers in January, the month the two pandas were returned, actually exceeded the previous year’s by nearly 30,000 — but attendance slumped afterward. The zoo’s visitor count from February to August was about 1.53 million, down 19% from the same period the previous year.

Deputy director Mikako Kaneko said, “The drop in visitors has shown up as a clear effect. Previously, many people came even on weekdays specifically to see the pandas.”

Ueno should take a lesson from Nanki-Shirahama and Adventure World
This is why Tokyo people are such a joke… all excuses, no actual countermeasures, total trash.

"Adventure World has changed too. Where posters and videos used to feature nothing but pandas, now other animals are front and center too — baby penguins, for example.
There are 120 species and 1,600 animals there. Plenty of appealing things to see. I think they've worked hard and held up well despite the panda shock."
    https://news.yahoo.co.jp/articles/e242a60a3bf4d85d1392efd764e00159f2923b96

It's been just over a year since all four of the giant pandas that were the star attraction at Adventure World, a leisure facility in Shirahama, Wakayama Prefecture, were returned at once.
Locals in Shirahama expected a major drop in tourists, but according to the prefecture's 'tourist trend survey' for last year, released in late August,
the total number of visitors to the town and tourist spots like Shirahama Onsen actually exceeded the figures from two years earlier, and has held at roughly the same level in the months since the pandas left.

    Re: #161
Come on, a sudden 20% drop right after the pandas left has to be because of the pandas

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Pandas disappeared from Ueno Zoo because Xiao Xiao and Lei Lei were returned to China at the end of January. Pandas on loan from China are part of “panda diplomacy,” and returning them once the loan term ends is standard practice. Adventure World in Wakayama Prefecture had a similar experience returning its pandas, but is said to have maintained tourist numbers by diversifying its animal exhibits — a contrast with Ueno’s response that became a talking point in the thread. Opinions were divided on whether the entire drop in visitors can be blamed on the pandas, with some commenters questioning the specific figure of “tens of billions of yen in losses.” There were also comments pointing out a gap between image and reality regarding the shoebill, known as “the bird that doesn’t move” — in practice, many individuals are quite active in captivity.

The protest really has turned into a fight between the poor, hasn't it.

Background and Key Points of This Story

Staff shortages and overcrowded classrooms have long been a recurring problem in French schools, and this round of protests reportedly began with frustration over class sizes of 40 students. What stands out is that a protest meant to demand better working conditions has escalated into arson targeting vehicles and shops, destruction of school facilities, and even assaults on the very teachers the protest was supposed to be supporting. On the thread, opinions clashed between those framing the violent turn as justified under a kind of revolutionary logic, and those arguing that arson and assault are never acceptable, in any country. It’s also been pointed out that the people getting hurt are ordinary local residents and teachers rather than the “privileged elite” — a detail easy to miss from the article alone, since it shows the protest isn’t simply a “citizens vs. power” standoff but one tangled up with friction inside the local community itself.

  • Arcade burns ¥10,000 an hour”—cost-per-hour hobby comparison sparks pushback

A thread on 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyo G” board compared the cost-efficiency of different hobbies: arcades supposedly burn through ¥10,000 in an hour, movies cost ¥1,000 for two hours, and fishing can fill a whole day for just ¥500.

Commenters immediately questioned the numbers themselves, picking apart the movie ticket price and whether anyone really spends ¥10,000 an hour at an arcade. The debate over fishing then split over whether to factor in the upfront cost of rods and reels, and the thread expanded to cover free alternatives like libraries and walks.

Background and Key Points of the Debate

The original format—”kills X hours for ¥Y”—is a classic nanG (Nandemo Jikkyo) template for jokingly comparing the hourly cost of different hobbies, and this time arcades, movies, and fishing were the subjects. The thread split mainly over two points. First was whether the original figures—¥10,000 and ¥500—made any sense, with posters like #13 and #59 picking apart the movie ticket price and arcade spending, while others like #14 and #16 pointed to specific ways to blow ¥10,000 an hour at an arcade (medal games, crane games). Second was the premise behind the fishing cost calculation: as the back-and-forth in posts #34, #56, #86, and #90 shows, the “one day for ¥500” claim wobbles depending on whether you count the upfront cost of rods and reels. Readers might easily assume fishing is a casual, low-budget hobby, but the thread shows gear alone can run into the tens of thousands of yen—making it a hobby that doesn’t fit neatly into a simple hourly-rate comparison.

*This article is compiled from excerpts and a summary of the 5ch (Nandemo Jikkyo G) thread “Arcade: ‘Kills 1 hour for ¥10,000’ / Movie: ‘Kills 2 hours for ¥1,000’ / Fishing: ‘Kills 1 day for ¥500’.”

  • Are Female Announcers Really “Unsuited” for Sports Commentary? TBS Anchor’s Flub Sparks 5ch Debate

During the women’s 100m hurdles final at the Asian Games, broadcast on TBS on September 27, announcer Ayako Uemura, who was calling the race, mispronounced an athlete’s name right after the finish, sparking a wave of criticism. The article covering the incident argues that the criticism itself—that “female announcers aren’t suited for sports commentary”—misses the point, and that the real issue lies in differences in how announcers are trained. In the resulting thread on 5ch’s “Entertainment/Sports Breaking News+” board, comments expressing discomfort with female commentary clashed with others arguing it’s simply a matter of experience and familiarity, with posters citing examples from horse racing, boat racing, soccer, and other sports to fuel the debate.

The other day I heard a broadcast where an inexperienced woman called the first half and a veteran man took over the second half — really drove home how much experience matters

Out in the regions you do get female staff announcers calling things like high school baseball
    15AnonymousOct 3, 2026 18:39
    Volleyball doesn't bother me though

The color commentary is awful too
"Nice, nice, that was good just now~"
    "Go for it—!"
    "Come on—!"
    "Yes!!"

Just some lady's personal reactions (orig. "mansan," a mocking internet term for women)

    Baseball in high school
Made us run from the 4th station to the summit and back, twice
And it was New Year's Day

Made me realize youth is better spent hanging out with friends and girls than doing club activities.
Back when nobody even had a cell phone

For soccer I think it's better to leave it to specialists like Kurashiki or Nishioka rather than staff announcers
    25AnonymousOct 3, 2026 18:42
Even male sports announcers don't just jump straight into calling the main event.
They build up experience and a track record on minor sports or farm-team games first, and only then move up to the big broadcasts.

If they're serious about developing female announcers, they need to let them do the same.
There's no way anyone can just pull that off cold.
    26AnonymousOct 3, 2026 18:42
There are male announcers out there saying baseball commentary isn't suited for women, but
if you watch MLB Weekly on BS NHK,
you'll notice MLB broadcasts actually do have female announcers calling games.

Who does the writer of this think they are
Some amateur who makes a living churning out lazy "kotatsu" armchair articles, acting all high and mighty
    39AnonymousOct 3, 2026 18:48
Starting them off on horse racing is the basic move, no?
    40AnonymousOct 3, 2026 18:49
People with high-pitched voices aren't suited for it.
I can't stand it when someone's shrieking in a shrill voice.
Even a woman is fine if her voice is low.
    42AnonymousOct 3, 2026 18:51
It all comes down to skill and voice
A shrill voice is just irritating
    52AnonymousOct 3, 2026 18:55
I think it's just a matter of getting used to it

Boat racing even has its own famous female commentator

What even is "sexy voice commentary" lol
    55AnonymousOct 3, 2026 18:56
Women's soccer sometimes has a female commentator but honestly she's just not good at it
She's trying to deliver her prepared lines and can't keep up with the pace of the match
    64AnonymousOct 3, 2026 19:00
    Re: #55
The moments where you can smugly deliver a prepared line are actually pretty limited, when you think about it — stuff like a gymnastics landing or a baseball home run
    73AnonymousOct 3, 2026 19:04
There have been women who were genuinely good as J-League pitch reporters though
The writer's perspective is just too narrow, so the "defense" in the article doesn't even work as a defense

Murabayashi, who did main commentary for Vegalta Sendai, was really solid and reassuring to listen to
Though Begatta (the mascot) went so over-the-top that I stopped watching as much
    76AnonymousOct 3, 2026 19:05
Green Channel's commentary — I just got used to it, so it's probably simply about familiarity (Green Channel = horse racing channel)

With horse racing there's less dead air to fill, so it probably just comes down to technical skill

Background and Key Points of This Debate

Evaluations of female announcers in sports commentary are an area where technical factors—like pitch of voice and years of experience—easily get tangled up with gendered perceptions. As the original article points out, major networks tend to hand international events to inexperienced announcers right away, while NHK and local stations take time to develop talent starting from regional competitions, and this difference easily creates the impression of being “suited” or “unsuited” for the job. Commenters in the thread also noted that in sports with established training pipelines—such as horse racing, boat racing, and volleyball—there’s less resistance to female commentary, a reminder that this topic easily gets reduced to a simplistic gender argument when the real issue lies elsewhere.
