  • Famous Ramen Shop’s Prices Spark Outcry: ‘That’s Not a Tsukemen Price’

A price list from a famous ramen shop posted on 5ch’s Hello! Project board has gone viral. The tsukemen (dipping noodles) was priced at 4,250 yen, prompting shocked reactions like “That’s not a tsukemen price” and “For that much you could eat an unagi rice bowl or a steak.” Some in the thread pointed to soaring costs of wheat, vegetables, and meat as the reason behind the hikes, while others argued that for a shop with lines out the door, the price is fair given supply and demand. Still others noted that at the same price, other popular chains like Jiro or Tonyama start to look like a bargain by comparison — opinions were split on how to judge ramen pricing.

    @
That's not a tsukemen price, lol
    5AnonymousOct 3, 2026 14:53
It's not just ramen shops — everything keeps going up and up.
And it never comes back down.
    6AnonymousOct 3, 2026 14:54
If they've got lines out the door and can charge a premium, I guess that's fair in its own way.
But to someone who doesn't care, paying 2,000 yen after waiting in line looks almost masochistic.
    8AnonymousOct 3, 2026 14:55
    It's not just Tomita.
Other shops' prices are only going to keep climbing — it's a one-way street.
Wheat, vegetables, meat — every ingredient is getting more expensive, so of course prices go up.
    9AnonymousOct 3, 2026 14:57
It was way cheaper just a few years ago, go look it up.
Prices are only going to keep rising from here, so if you want to eat it, now's probably the time.
Five years from now it'll be even pricier, so looking back from then, today might still count as cheap.
    12AnonymousOct 3, 2026 14:59
Seeing this makes Jiro and Tonyama look almost too cheap — I feel bad for them.
    13AnonymousOct 3, 2026 15:00
If I'm paying 4,250 yen, I'd rather get an unagi rice bowl or a steak.
    14AnonymousOct 3, 2026 15:02
I spent big and partied hard back in the deflation years, so I'm satisfied now.
Overseas trips, sports cars, fashion, surfing, fine dining, chasing women — I did it all.
Now that we're in this brutal inflation era, I'll just coast through my remaining years.
    16AnonymousOct 3, 2026 15:03
If they're going to charge prices like that, drop the counter-only seating.
    Make it all table seats.
Then the ramen shop would probably whine about turnover dropping instead.
    17AnonymousOct 3, 2026 15:03
If they let part-timers run the place with continuous hours, they could keep it cheap.
But since the famous owner himself works the kitchen, hours are short, demand can't be met, and they need to use price to keep the chaos in check.
    19AnonymousOct 3, 2026 15:04
    Who cares.
You lot were never going to set foot in that ramen shop in your whole life anyway.
    20AnonymousOct 3, 2026 15:05
Business is free to run however it wants, so let them do as they please.
    21AnonymousOct 3, 2026 15:07
You think it's “expensive,” right? But in a few years there'll come a time when this price looks “cheap.”
Because Japan's inflation is going to keep running for the next 5, even 10 years — seriously, unfortunately.
    27AnonymousOct 3, 2026 15:13
They can get away with pricing this bold because there are still customers (fans) willing to pay.
    28AnonymousOct 3, 2026 15:15
This is what you'd call high-end ramen.
Unlike the everyday ramen you can casually grab anytime,
it's moved into the category of a “feast” — on par with a traditional ryotei restaurant or French dining.
    29AnonymousOct 3, 2026 15:15
We're the ones dropping 9,000 yen on a concert for our favorite idol, so we're pretty bad too (point taken).
    30AnonymousOct 3, 2026 15:16
There's also the letdown pattern where, despite the high-end price, it's not actually all that great once you eat it.
The bad shops like that are the first to go under.
The ones that genuinely win customers' hearts are the ones that last.
    31AnonymousOct 3, 2026 15:17
Apparently this shop was crowned number one at the Ramen Japan Championship.
If that's true, this price makes sense.
    32AnonymousOct 3, 2026 15:18
Hello! Project holding fans' hearts for 30 years straight — that's actually impressive.
    34AnonymousOct 3, 2026 15:20
Just because they serve the noodles and sauce separately, they think they can tack on an extra 1,000 yen.
    35AnonymousOct 3, 2026 15:20
It's a famous shop that shows up often on BS and CS ramen-shop feature programs.
    36AnonymousOct 3, 2026 15:21
If you ate ramen in New York, it'd run about that much anyway.
    37AnonymousOct 3, 2026 15:22
It's basically got a tie-up with 7-Eleven at this point.
    38AnonymousOct 3, 2026 15:22
I had the tsukemen at Tomita and it was just… tsukemen.
I don't get why people hype it up this much.
    39AnonymousOct 3, 2026 15:22
I want Hello! Project to become the kind of thing people line up around the block for.
    40AnonymousOct 3, 2026 15:24
I don't think you need to bother buying shumai or a seasoned soft-boiled egg at a place like this.
But if you skip them, people will probably think you're lame for not getting the works.
    41AnonymousOct 3, 2026 15:27
Tsukemen's pretty much the same everywhere.
I recently ducked into a popular tsukemen shop on a whim when I was hungry, and it was the same fish-based flavor as everywhere else.
    42AnonymousOct 3, 2026 15:29
This kind of style probably won't last long.
    60AnonymousOct 3, 2026 16:06
    Re: #42
It's already lasted a long time — that's exactly how it got here.
    43AnonymousOct 3, 2026 15:31
Online it's all doom and gloom about the economy, but out in the real world, business is booming — that's the reality.
    44AnonymousOct 3, 2026 15:31
They bring out hot water to dilute the dipping sauce, but I've never actually used it once — by the time I'm done eating, the broth's already gone.
    47AnonymousOct 3, 2026 15:34
    Fish-powder style tsukemen —
once or twice in your life is plenty.
It's not something you need to eat over and over.
    48AnonymousOct 3, 2026 15:34
At Hakataya in Fukuoka I ate something that barely qualified as ramen.
You just dump the ramen sauce sitting on the table all over it and it sort of becomes ramen.
    49AnonymousOct 3, 2026 15:38
Can't help it — it's the kind of shop where Riko Riko might show up (a nod to the Lycoris Recoil characters).
    58AnonymousOct 3, 2026 16:00
    Re: #49
Could you please stop looking at Riko Riko like that?
    51AnonymousOct 3, 2026 15:42
People still line up for it anyway, so it's a fair price.
    52AnonymousOct 3, 2026 15:45
The one in the basement at Tokyo Station was bad.
Is the main shop actually any good?

Background and Key Points of This Debate

The price list behind this uproar is said to belong to the ramen shop Tomita, and commenters in the thread pointed out that “it’s not just Tomita” — other famous shops are also raising prices due to soaring ingredient costs. Ramen has long been an affordable, everyday meal for ordinary people, but shops where a celebrity owner does the cooking face limits on operating hours and output, creating a structure where demand easily outstrips supply and pushes prices up. Opinions in the thread split between those who see this as a “fair price” set by market forces as long as the lines keep forming, and those who weigh it against the everyday instinct that the same money could buy an entirely different meal. It’s worth noting that the claim floated in the thread about the shop having won the “Ramen Japan Championship” is just one poster’s comment, not a confirmed fact.

  • If Hanshin Clinches the Pennant, Giants’ 2nd Place Is Locked In — A First-Ever Combo in Central League History

On October 3, 2026, Hanshin headed into Hiroshima with a championship “magic number” of 1, while the Giants faced a game that would lock in their 2nd-place finish. In Central League history, there has never been a year when Hanshin won the pennant and the Giants finished 2nd (in 1962, ’64, ’85, 2003, ’05, ’23, and ’25 the Giants finished anywhere from 3rd to 5th) — attention is now on whether that will finally happen this year. On the 5ch “Giants Acting Manager” thread, alongside interest in this unprecedented combination, posters also traded unconfirmed rumors about Hayato Sakamoto’s retirement, discussed the Chunichi Dragons’ final game of the season, shared news about Hiroshima pitcher Hayato Tsunehiro’s surgery, and exchanged some light banter between Hanshin fans and Hiroshima/Chunichi fans.

    Background and Key Points

The Giants’ finishes in years Hanshin won the pennant, as laid out in the thread (1962, ’64, ’85, 2003, ’05, ’23, ’25), were all 3rd to 5th place — the combination of Hanshin finishing 1st and the Giants finishing 2nd has never happened in Central League history. This reflects a recurring pattern where a strong Hanshin season has tended to coincide with a struggling Giants season, and attention is now on whether that pattern is finally breaking this year. The comments about Hayato Sakamoto’s retirement remain secondhand — reportedly heard from a team insider — with no confirmation from Sakamoto himself or an official team announcement, so they should be treated with caution. Opinions in the thread diverged over how to read Hanshin’s dominant run: some posters living in the Kansai area voiced weariness over the flood of special TV programming, while others pointed out that the number of Giants fans in Kansai is itself shrinking. True to form for this thread, broad pennant-race talk ran alongside standalone items like the update on Hiroshima pitcher Tsunehiro’s surgery.

  • Real Estate Stocks Plunge, Condo Prices Start to Slide Too — 5ch Talks ‘Residual-Loan Tower Condos’

A thread titled “The Real Estate Industry Is Starting to Fall Apart,” posted on 5ch’s Nandemo Jikkyo G (livegalileo) board, reported falling prices for new and used condos in Tokyo alongside a crash in real estate stocks. Some posters noted that share prices are down 40-50% from their spring peak, and the term “residual-loan tower condo” (zankure tawaman — borrowing the slang for an auto loan’s remaining balance to describe buyers financing high-rise condos with multi-decade loans) got thrown around a lot. Posters were split on whether this decline reflects a structural trend driven by Japan’s falling birth rate or is just a temporary correction, with plenty of lingering skepticism rooted in past “it’s totally going to collapse” predictions that never came true.

It was speculative demand plus the real estate industry's own agenda
Once the government started prioritizing genuine housing needs and rolled out consumer protection policies, it all collapsed at once

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

“Zankure” is slang originally referring to the unpaid balance on a car loan; the term caught on in the thread after being applied to people buying tower condos with multi-decade loans. As for what drove real estate prices up, the thread raised two competing theories without settling on a main cause — a wave of buying by Chinese capital, versus speculation and industry maneuvering disconnected from real housing demand. It’s also easy to overlook that real estate stocks and J-REITs don’t always move in lockstep, so a drop in share prices doesn’t necessarily mean the whole housing market is falling. On the declining birth rate, there’s a persistent view that as long as population keeps concentrating in cities, it won’t simply translate into oversupply, leaving forecasts divided. On interest rates too, opinions split between those saying a hike is unnecessary with CPI around 1.9%, and those calling for a hike to counter the weak yen — with mortgage rate trends watched closely as a factor that will shape where prices head next.

  • No Need to Take “That’s Just Your Opinion, Isn’t It?” Seriously… The Sorry End of “Evidence Sickness”

An article in which Iwate Prefectural University associate professor Kazuya Sugitani criticized, in PRESIDENT Online, the trend of casually tossing around the phrase “That’s just your opinion, isn’t it?” while demanding numerical or data-backed proof for everything — dubbing it “evidence sickness” — became a hot topic on 5ch’s Entertainment & Sports News+ board. The thread saw a clash between those arguing “of course data and evidence get demanded once you’re out in the working world” and skeptics countering that “numbers can be spun to manipulate impressions” and “demanding evidence for things that can’t be quantified is just sophistry,” with the debate continuing around examples like COVID statistics and cabinet approval rating polls.

This post is a genuinely incisive critique of today's "evidence supremacism" (evidence sickness).
The observation that you don't need to take "that's just your opinion, isn't it?" at face value, tied together with the shogi concept of the "edge pawn" (hashifu) and the strategic philosophy of 9-dan Yoshiharu Habu, forms a strong counterargument to a modern society obsessed with efficiency and data.
If we break this structure down a bit, some deeper meaning starts to emerge, like the following:

Then it turns into a flow of emotionally denying that data

Background and Key Points of This Topic

“That’s just your opinion, isn’t it?” is a phrase commonly used in online gotcha-style debates, and Kazuya Sugitani (associate professor at Iwate Prefectural University) criticized the trend of overusing it in PRESIDENT Online, dubbing it “evidence sickness.” The key issue is that the drive to quantify everything ends up using demands for data to shut down value judgments that were never meant to be quantifiable in the first place. The thread split between the practical view that “data is essential once you’re in the working world” and the skeptical view that “data, too, can be selectively processed and presented.” Using examples like COVID infection statistics and cabinet approval rating polls, commenters also pointed out that numbers themselves aren’t necessarily neutral. One thing readers can easily misread is that the article isn’t arguing “data is unnecessary” — Sugitani’s point is skepticism toward the casual demand for evidence even on matters that can’t be quantified, and the thread never quite spells out that data and opinion/experience aren’t opposites but complementary.

  • Yoichiro Kashitani Pulls Off Rare “Four-Network Sweep” as TV Commentator Across Japan’s Four Straight Matches, Sparks Buzz

Former Japan national team player Yoichiro Kashitani has drawn attention after serving as TV commentator across multiple networks during Japan’s recent matches — Fuji TV for the September 24 Uruguay match, Nippon TV for the September 28 Venezuela match, and TBS for the October 1 Ecuador match — with headlines dubbing it a “four-network sweep.” On the 5channel Entertainment/Sports News+ board, reactions were split: some praised how easy his commentary was to follow, while others criticized it as bland and lacking tactical insight. Comments about his hairstyle and looks were also prominent.

Yoichiro Kashitani, a former Japan national team player now active as a TV commentator, achieved an unusual “four-network sweep” across Japan’s four matches in September and October.

Kashitani appeared as a commentator on Fuji TV for the September 24 match against Uruguay, and on Nippon TV for the September 28 match against Venezuela.

He then commentated on TBS’s broadcast of the October 1 match against Ecuador.

Background and Key Points of This Story

Commentary for Japan national team matches has traditionally followed a network-by-network pattern, with each broadcaster sticking to its own regular ex-players (Nippon TV with Shoji Jo and Tsuyoshi Kitazawa, TV Asahi with Yasutaro Matsuki, Fuji TV with Shinji Ono and Junichi Inamoto, and so on) — commenters in the thread note that appearing across multiple networks, as Kashitani did, is unusual. According to the original article, Kashitani handled commentary for Fuji TV’s September 24 Uruguay match, Nippon TV’s September 28 Venezuela match, and TBS’s October 1 Ecuador match; the headline’s “four-network sweep” appears to include a TV Asahi appearance as well, though the excerpted article doesn’t spell out the details. The split in opinion stems from two competing views: that Kashitani’s commentary is mostly just praising players with little tactical insight, versus that it’s clear and easy to follow. The thread also floated the theory that his rise coincided with former player-turned-commentator Tomoaki Makino stepping down to become a manager, opening up a commentary slot that Kashitani then filled.

  • Mortgage Rates Rising Reignites the ‘Buy vs. Rent’ Debate — 5ch: ‘Renting Is ¥27.7 Million Cheaper’

With mortgage interest rates on the rise, a cost-benefit showdown between “buying” and “renting” a home became a hot topic on 5ch’s News VIP board (“Nupe VIP”). Using a scenario where the property costs ¥50 million, financed with a full 35-year loan, and the interest rate climbs to 5% from the 16th year onward, one poster calculated the total lifetime cost: about ¥93.2 million for buying versus about ¥65.5 million for renting — a difference of roughly ¥27.7 million in renting’s favor. The thread then spiraled into questions about whether the assumed ¥150,000/month rent was realistic for a home of that size, debates over paying cash upfront or using a corporation to save on taxes, and worries about rising crime as vacant homes multiply — with no side landing a decisive win.

    1AnonymousOct 3, 2026 13:40
Turns out you wouldn't even break even if you sold it lmaooooooooooo
    3AnonymousOct 3, 2026 13:40
    [Calculation assumptions]
・Property price: ¥50 million (35-year full loan, equal principal-and-interest repayment)
・Maintenance/property tax etc.: ¥15 million over 35 years
    ・Renting: ¥150,000/month rent (renewal fee of 1 month's rent every 2 years)
・Interest rate path: rises every 5 years, plateauing at 5.0% from year 16 onward

    [Total cost comparison]
Total cost of buying: approx. ¥93.2 million (approx. ¥78.2 million total loan + ¥15 million maintenance)
Total cost of renting: approx. ¥65.5 million

In the scenario where the interest rate rises to 5%, "renting" comes out decisively ahead by about ¥27.7 million.

For a homeowner, the break-even point is whether the land and building retain at least ¥27.7 million in value when the loan is paid off after 35 years — but realistically, a 35-year-old property keeping over half its original value is hard to imagine.

That's clearly off — a ¥150,000/month rental is basically a 1-2LDK (living-dining-kitchen layout) with maybe 3 rooms. A house you own has more like 6.
    8AnonymousOct 3, 2026 13:42
Once half of the rent counts as a deductible expense, buying never had a chance against renting.
    60AnonymousOct 3, 2026 14:01
    Re: #8
    It's not half.
    30% at most.
That's the home-office expense apportionment ("kaji anbun") ratio.

    Re: #8
Can't believe people this clueless exist lmaooo
If you own, just register it as company housing or sublease it to your own corporation. I do the latter — the company's profit gets wiped out as a deductible rent expense, huge tax savings.
And the rental income I personally receive nets out to zero once you factor in depreciation as a deductible expense, so that's tax-saving too.
    11AnonymousOct 3, 2026 13:44
By the time you're old, vacancies will be everywhere, so it'll be easy to find a place and rents will drop too.
Well, taking out a loan is a loss from the start anyway.
If you've got money to buy a house, you're better off putting it into other investments.

    Exactly.
Put that money into investments instead and it'll keep growing.
Also, owning a home leaves you exposed to disaster risk.
    23AnonymousOct 3, 2026 13:50
Money aside, with vacant homes rising and neighborhoods getting rougher, are you really going to keep living in some rundown apartment that never gets renovated because the landlord can't save up for repairs?

If people can't afford to buy, more of them end up renting — landlords aren't gonna lower rent on purpose when demand's rising lol.
    53AnonymousOct 3, 2026 13:57
    Re: #42
Per the supply-demand curve, house prices keep falling, which then pushes demand back up a bit.
So the rental share won't rise all that much, and since the population-decline trend structurally doesn't change, prices end up falling anyway.
    46AnonymousOct 3, 2026 13:56

Background and Key Points of This Debate

The buy-vs-rent cost comparison is a perennial topic that resurfaces whenever mortgage rates climb, since rising rates inflate the total amount homeowners end up paying. The core of the thread’s debate was how sensitive the outcome is to the assumptions used — especially the rent and interest-rate scenarios — and many pointed out that the assumed ¥150,000/month rent looked too cheap for a home of the size being compared to. The assumption that the property’s value falls to near zero after 35 years also doesn’t necessarily hold, depending on location. In the end, which option wins out depends on the property’s location, the individual’s financial situation, and how often they expect to move, so readers should keep in mind that this isn’t a case where either side can be declared the outright “winner.”

  • Why So Little Media Exposure for Irie Risa? 5ch: “She’s the Group’s Top Seller, Yet Its Biggest Mystery”

On 5ch, Irie Risa’s name came up as the one member of Hello! Project’s Juice=Juice whose lack of media exposure stands out. Threads speculated that after returning from a long hiatus, her workload may be deliberately being kept light. The group is now considered one of Hello! Project’s best-selling units, yet posters noted, “She’s in her sixth year and we still barely know anything about her” and “Compared to Ebata and Arisawa, she just doesn’t leave much of an impression.” The consensus was that while her talents — taiko drumming, calligraphy, and the Soran Bushi dance — are well known, surprisingly little is known about her personality or personal tastes.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Irie Risa is a member of Juice=Juice, and the thread discussed her past long-term hiatus — though it’s worth noting the specific reason for that hiatus has never been officially explained by Irie herself or her agency, and remains information passed around among fans. Juice=Juice, having gone through member graduations, is now considered one of Hello! Project’s central groups; while Ebata Hisaki and Arisawa Real are each known for clear, easy-to-grasp personas, posters agreed that Irie, despite being highly regarded for skills like taiko drumming and the Soran Bushi dance, comes across as hard to get a read on as a person. Some called for more gravure work, though that’s likely tied to the fact that Hello! Project itself has scaled back that kind of content in recent years.

  • Gaming’s ‘Death of Physical Copies’ Debate Splits 5ch Down the Middle

A thread on 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyo G” board heated up over whether physical game copies are destined to disappear. Posters cited a figure showing that roughly 95% of Capcom’s game sales are now digital downloads, discussed reports that Xbox is considering a new anti-piracy system that assigns serial numbers to discs, and pointed out that the Nintendo Switch’s “Game-Key Card” doesn’t actually contain any game data. Voices welcoming the shift to digital clashed with others worried that once a console generation ends, older titles could become impossible to obtain.

Background and Key Points of This Debate

The debate over how games are distributed is rooted in the maturing of digital delivery infrastructure along with rising storage capacity and falling storage prices. While package-free sales models like Steam have become standard on PC, home consoles still rely on compromise solutions like the “Game-Key Card,” and the thread showed plenty of confusion about how it actually works. A Game-Key Card contains no game data at all — it functions more like a license certificate that requires a download on first launch, letting manufacturers hold down production costs while keeping the appearance of a physical product. The worry that older disc-based titles could become hard to find after a hardware generation change is a concern shared by digital downloads too, since those depend on how long distribution servers stay online — so it’s not accurate to call either format definitively “safer.” As for the claim linking Hideo Kojima and Sony, that’s speculation raised within the thread itself, with no supporting evidence presented.

  • Daughter Who Was Supposed to Leave Early Never Comes Home — Turns Out She Overslept on the Bus and Spent 2 Hours Locked in the Garage; 5ch: ‘My Jaded Heart Just Melted a Little’

Shortly after noon on October 1, a high school girl fell asleep on a Fujikyu Mobility route bus running within Shizuoka Prefecture and went unnoticed when the bus reached its terminus at Gotemba Station — she ended up locked inside for about two hours after the bus returned to the garage. The driver reportedly went back to the garage without checking the bus’s interior at the terminus. The student has not reported any injury or illness. On the 5ch thread, many posters offered concrete suggestions for preventing this kind of oversight or shared similar experiences of their own, while others questioned why an incident with no injuries made national news at all — reactions were split.

Delivered 10/2 (Fri) 16:03 — Shizuoka Broadcasting System (SBS)

Shortly after noon on October 1, a high school girl who had fallen asleep on a route bus operated by Fujikyu Mobility went unnoticed and was left inside the bus for two hours after it returned to the garage. The company says the student has not reported feeling unwell.

According to Fujikyu Mobility, the student boarded the bus — which left Mishima Station at 10:50 a.m. on October 1 bound for Gotemba Station — at the “Nichidai-mae” stop partway along the route. She was asleep when the bus reached the Gotemba Station terminus, but the driver returned to the garage without checking inside, leaving the student stranded on board.

Forklifts are built so the lever won't work unless there's weight on the seat — buses should have something similar, a warning light near the driver's seat that comes on if there's still weight on a passenger seat, with the feature locked so only the manufacturer can disable it.

If it's just checking whether any passengers are left, they tend to cut corners with a quick glance or a shout-out,
but if it's checking for lost-and-found items or cleaning, you'd think they'd normally walk all the way to the back row.

    Background and talking points

The report includes the line “the student has not reported feeling unwell,” but this refers specifically to not having reported any ill effects from being stuck in the garage for two hours — it has nothing to do with her reason for leaving school early. On the thread, some posters conflated this line with her early-leave excuse and speculated she might have been “skipping class,” but reading the article’s wording carefully shows this has no bearing on whether her early departure itself was legitimate. There’s also a structural reason oversights like this happen at terminal stops: many bus operators lack any mechanical detection method, such as seat sensors, and rely entirely on drivers’ visual checks. Several posters on the thread described similar experiences of their own, suggesting this wasn’t an especially rare case. Looked at purely as “nobody got hurt and she made it home safely,” it’s a minor incident — but the fact that it was framed around a parent’s anxiety over “my daughter, who was supposed to come home early, hasn’t come home” is likely one reason it ended up as national news.

  • Government Puts Its Red Feather Charity PR on Hold — 5ch: ‘They’re All Cut From the Same Cloth’

Following news that a social welfare corporation in Hokkaido can’t account for donations it collected, the government has decided to hold off this year on having cabinet ministers pin red feathers to their chests for publicity as part of the Community Chest charity drive, which kicked off as usual on October 1. The call for public donations itself continues as it does every year. On 5ch, the scandal stirred up distrust toward the donation system as a whole, with many venting about the de facto forced collections run through neighborhood associations, alongside trivia-style chatter about the origins of the red feather and the meaning of its color — so the thread grew from one organization’s scandal into broader doubts about donation culture itself.

    Oct 1 (Thu), 18:45 JST

    Asahi Shimbun

As the Red Feather Community Chest charity drive kicks off on the 1st as it does every year, the government will refrain from having cabinet ministers across various ministries pin red feathers to their chests to promote it. The decision comes in light of the issue of a large sum of donations going unaccounted for at a social welfare corporation in Hokkaido. The call for public donations continues.

Background and Key Points of This Story

The Red Feather Community Chest is a nationwide charity drive that kicks off every October 1, with donations channeled through social welfare councils and similar bodies into local welfare programs. What’s actually being scaled back here is cabinet ministers’ practice of pinning on feathers for publicity — not the donation drive itself, a distinction that’s easy to miss. The thread split over whether to treat the unaccounted-for funds at the one Hokkaido organization as proof of fraud across the whole system, or as an isolated scandal at a single organization; those leaning toward the former also had plenty to say about the de facto forced collections run through neighborhood associations. At the same time, there was no shortage of trivia-style back-and-forth about the feather’s origins and the meaning of its color, so the thread wasn’t uniformly critical.
