  • Delivery Driver’s Post Claiming “Cash-Paying Customers Cause More Trouble” Sparks Debate on 5ch

A poster believed to be a food delivery driver sparked debate on 5ch after claiming that “90% of customers who pay cash-on-delivery are idiots,” backing it up with specific reasons. The poster mocked the common customer excuse of “I pay cash because I don’t know how much I’ve spent,” prompting a wave of comments urging a shift to cashless payments. Others pushed back, arguing that card payments lead to overspending and that cash gives a more tangible sense of money for purchases over 10,000 yen (about $65) — highlighting a clash in values between cash loyalists and cashless advocates.

    Re: #71
Sure, at the kind of supermarket where the bottom-of-the-barrel crowd gathers

Background and Key Points of the Debate

Some delivery-proxy platforms let customers choose cash-on-delivery payment, which often means the delivery driver has to front the change themselves. The thread’s disagreement centered on whether cash payment itself is really the source of trouble — some argued the real issue isn’t the payment method but the lack of a system for confirming payment methods in advance, or poor communication with customers. Others pointed out that the feeling of “overspending with cards” may stem from the psychological restraint of physically handing over cash, suggesting that going cashless isn’t necessarily always the rational choice. It’s worth keeping in mind that the strong language in the thread reflects the frustration of delivery workers, and isn’t necessarily representative of cash-paying customers as a whole.

  • Morning Musume ’26’s Morioka Show: Even the Matinee Leaves the 3rd Floor Nearly Empty — Low Turnout Sparks Buzz

Seating information shared on 5ch revealed that at Morning Musume ’26’s Morioka concert, even the matinee show left empty seats all the way to the back of the 2nd floor, while the evening show hadn’t sold tickets close to the last rows of the 1st floor either. The thread also compared annual attendance figures, pointing out that while Juice=Juice is doing well, Morning Musume and ANGERME are struggling, sparking a wider discussion about the gap between Hello! Project’s internal pecking order and actual attendance numbers. It was also noted that the situation didn’t improve even on a tour that added new members.

Looking at the empty seats on the 2nd floor and above at today's ANGERME show, I really felt that Juice=Juice's "packed house" effect still hasn't spread to Hello! Project as a whole. This is Nagoya, the cursed venue where even °C-ute at their peak couldn't fill this same Forest Hall, and Mai Yajima cried tears of frustration during the MC. How to fill this venue is actually a pretty important question.

    @
ANGERME's autumn tour "Fūrinkazan" was way too good. The current lineup's ANGERME is strong and way too cool. Such a waste that seats from row 3-4 on the 2nd floor and further back were empty.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

As of 2026, Hello! Project runs several groups in parallel — Morning Musume ’26, Juice=Juice, ANGERME, Country Girls, and others — with each group’s tour venue size and number of shows decided by the agency. Note that figures raised in the thread, such as “Nogizaka46’s 2026 turnout of 500,000,” are unverified numbers posted on 5ch, not official published statistics. The discussion centered on the mismatch between the agency’s apparent obsession with maintaining a strict “pecking order” among groups — continuing to book large venues for groups with weak turnout — and the reality that even adding new members failed to boost attendance. Meanwhile, some see Juice=Juice’s strength as coming from steadily building popularity without relying on graduation-driven marketing.

  • Idol Fest ‘GIFT’ General Sale: Only Day 2 Tickets Left Unsold

General ticket sales for the idol festival “GIFT,” set to take place in Tokyo from November 27-29, 2026, have become a hot topic on 5ch. The venues are SGC Hall Ariake and Toyota Arena Tokyo. While Day 1 (DAY-1), featuring =LOVE and Fruits Zipper, sold out its allotted tickets almost immediately, it turned out that only Day 2 (DAY-2) — featuring Hinatazaka46, AKB48, Tokimeki Sendenbu, and others — still has unsold tickets. With Nogizaka46 and iLiFE! headlining the final day, commenters on the thread piled on with complaints that “Day 2’s lineup just doesn’t measure up,” sparking a debate over the lineup order and each group’s drawing power.

iLiFE! is popular with high schoolers, so their social media presence is absurdly strong — at a glance they look wildly popular, but in the bigger picture they're still not that huge, and the JK (high-school-girl) demographic gets bored fast, so who knows how long this wave lasts

Even though they're filling up K Arena (Yokohama)?

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

GIFT is a three-day idol festival held across SGC Hall Ariake and Toyota Arena Tokyo in Tokyo. The concentration of high-drawing-power lineups — =LOVE and Fruits Zipper on Day 1, Nogizaka46 and iLiFE! on the final day — appears to be behind Day 2’s relatively poor sales. Commenters on the thread pointed out that the date often overlaps with Nippon TV’s annual music special ‘Best Artist,’ broadcast on the last Saturday of November, and that major groups with strong drawing power tend to prioritize appearing on that show instead. On the other hand, some argued that popularity on social media doesn’t necessarily translate into actual ticket-selling power, and opinions were divided on how to read the festival’s overall drawing structure. Some also raised concerns that the two venues are more than 700 meters apart.

  • Photo of School Lunch in Tonami, Toyama Goes Viral — 5ch Users Say ‘Fancier Than My Lunch’

A photo of a school lunch posted on the official X account of Tonami City, Toyama Prefecture, went viral and triggered a surge of traffic that overwhelmed the city’s website. Sparked by news coverage pointing to the impact of soaring food costs, 5ch lit up with a mix of reactions — some shocked by the sparse number of dishes (“poor kids”), others shrugging it off (“my school lunches were just like this,” “honestly fancier than my own lunch”). Some commenters warned of the danger of judging from a single photo without accounting for how portions vary by grade level and school term, and the thread grew into a broader debate over the quality of school lunches and how lunch fees should be handled.

Portion sizes vary a lot by grade and term.

    https://storage.googleapis.com/tossland/1h861HHwaAow/img.png

Background and Key Points of the Debate

School lunch content and budget allocation vary by municipality depending on whether meals are cooked in-house at each school or at a central kitchen, and in recent years rising food costs have been pressuring lunch programs nationwide to scale back. More municipalities are moving toward free school lunches, but whether portion size and quality can be maintained on a limited budget remains an open question. As pointed out in the thread, the published photo represents just one particular day and grade level, and since appropriate portion sizes vary considerably by grade and school term, it would be premature to judge an entire municipality’s lunch standards from a single photo. Whether lunch fees should go back to being charged directly, or how to secure funding to improve quality while keeping lunches free, is a question this thread leaves unresolved.

  • When Did the Console Wars Start? 5ch Digs Up the Board’s Very First Thread — It Ended With Just ‘No Chance.’

A thread on 5ch’s “Hardware/Industry” (Geha) board asked when the hardware rivalries between users actually began. Replies pointed out that similar rivalries existed even before 2ch, going back to the PC-communication service “Minazuki” and Sega’s official BBS, and that the Geha board itself started in April 2000 from a thread debating the Dreamcast’s future. It was also noted that the term “next-gen console war” was reportedly coined by Masashi Saeki, SCE’s PR manager at the time, raising the idea that at least part of the rivalry originated from corporate marketing rather than growing organically among fans.

Is it really that expensive though?

    Background and Key Points

The Geha board was born in 2000 when threads with a strongly confrontational tone were split off from the “Home Console” board, and its oldest surviving thread is said to be a Dreamcast-related thread from that April. Hardware rivalries existed even before the internet became widespread, in places like PC-communication networks and official corporate BBSes, suggesting this is less an internet-born phenomenon than one that has simply carried over across different media over time. The thread also noted that the term “next-generation console war” was reportedly coined by SCE’s PR manager at the time, suggesting part of the rivalry may have originated from corporate marketing strategy. That said, the claim that hardware rivalries in the US date back to the Mega Drive/Genesis era wasn’t backed by any source, so it’s worth keeping in mind how widely held that view actually is.

※This article is compiled and summarized from the 5ch (Hardware/Industry [Geha]) thread “[Question] When did the console war between users actually start?“

  • Hopes Rise for GTA6’s First-Ever Perfect Metascore — 5ch: ‘If It Flops, the Industry Tanks’

With GTA6’s release about a month away, a post appeared on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry board — nicknamed “Geha” [ゲハ, short for ゲーム・ハード, a board known for heated console-war-style debates] — claiming that IGN, GameSpot, and Eurogamer were all about to award it a perfect Metascore of 100. The thread took off from there. The previous game, GTA5, holds the record for the fastest-selling entertainment product of all time across any medium, and posters voiced both hope and anxiety that “depending on how GTA6 turns out, the entire Western games industry could slide into a slump.” At the same time, plenty of posters took a more cautious view on sales, arguing that “it’ll be hard to beat the 200 million units the last game sold” and asking “how much will the now-older original fanbase really still play it?” — so opinion was split on both the review scores and the sales numbers.

On top of that, it'll need a 60fps version on PS6 and 'Helix' [the rumored codename for next-gen Xbox] to help drive those platforms too.

This is actually the first time ever that both PlayStation and Xbox are down from their previous generation.
Those two platforms' unit counts feed directly into the AAA market's install base.
GTA6 is expected to grow that base.

With a code-in-a-box edition you're not limited by disc supply, so having zero restock in sight a month before launch is strange.

Hang on, people on Geha were going on forever about 'codes come with an expiration date' — did everyone just forget that?

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Metascore is Metacritic’s aggregated score of outlet reviews, and even the biggest blockbusters essentially never land a perfect score. As one poster in the thread put it, “even Elden Ring only got a 96” — a 100 would be effectively unprecedented. Worth flagging: the thread starter’s claim that IGN, GameSpot, and Eurogamer were all giving GTA6 a “100” came with no link to any outside source, and several commenters in the thread openly questioned or pushed back on whether the claim was even true. The other major thread of debate was sales forecasting. GTA5 is a genuine outlier, holding the Guinness World Record for fastest entertainment product in any medium to pass $1 billion in sales (3 days), but many posters were doubtful GTA6 could top its predecessor’s 200-million-unit lifetime total, pointing to the 13 years since the last release and to changing life circumstances — whether the now-older original player base would keep playing the same way. The claim that “the day-one quota is 50 million units” likewise appeared with no cited source, and some posters asked for evidence. And against the backdrop of current PS5 and Xbox sales both trailing their predecessor generation, the sheer amount of hope being pinned on one single game to revive hardware momentum is itself a telling snapshot of the gap between the industry’s expectations and its actual demand.

  • Hello! Project’s 3 Groups Get Just 15 Minutes at TV Asahi’s Summer Fes — 5ch: ‘They Pulled the Ladder Out From Under Them’

It’s come to light that the Hello! Project acts (Juice=Juice, Angerme, and BEYOOOOONDS) were given a combined total of just 15 minutes of airtime on TV Asahi’s CS music special “Summer Fes,” sparking discussion on 5ch. Posts listing other groups’ slots showed some running over 60 minutes or even as long as 175 minutes, making Hello! Project’s share look strikingly thin by comparison. Opinions on the thread split over the reason — from speculation that “their agency just didn’t pay TV Asahi its due” to the harsher take that “it simply reflects their falling popularity.”

Re: #77 Has to be that — this garbage agency hasn't changed one bit since the days they crammed Berryz Koubou into a Morning Musume slot and made everyone recoil.

    Background and Points of Debate

“TV Asahi Summer Fes” is a CS broadcast special that presents music performances from multiple idol groups and artists, and the length of each act’s slot varies widely. Compared to the figures cited in post #53 — HKT at 50 minutes, MORESTAR at 175 minutes, SKE at 60 minutes — the 15 minutes given to the Hello! Project acts (Juice=Juice, Angerme, and BEYOOOOONDS combined) is indeed short. That said, explanations floated in the thread, such as “they didn’t pay TV Asahi,” are purely individual speculation, not an official statement from the broadcaster or the agency. Airtime allocation is often shaped less by ratings or popularity than by behind-the-scenes factors — negotiations over broadcast slots, sponsor arrangements, or whether footage is being held back for a CD bonus feature — so reading this 15-minute figure alone as proof of the group’s standing in popularity would be premature. It’s also worth noting that the thread never settled whether Angerme and BEYOOOOONDS were tacked onto a slot originally meant for Juice=Juice alone, or whether the three groups were bundled as one slot from the very start — that detail remains speculation.

In the thread, many commenters compared the numbers to the past achievements of Juice=Juice — a senior group within the same Hello! Others urged caution about drawing simple comparisons, noting that the buzz is partly driven by underground idols spreading choreography videos, and that TikTok’s counting criteria may have changed since the earlier period. Re: #59
One of those songs has garbage numbers compared to the others.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Within the Hello! Project fan community, the number of times a song gets used on TikTok has become an established benchmark for whether a track is “taking off,” and the thread discussed the numbers largely by comparing them to Juice=Juice’s past track record. However, as one commenter (post #17) pointed out, TikTok’s own counting criteria have changed over time — an easy detail to overlook when making simple numerical comparisons, meaning the figures aren’t always measured on the same footing. There’s also the fact that underground idols and personal accounts using a song doesn’t necessarily translate into greater name recognition for the group itself; whether the trend actually spreads to the broader “oshi-katsu” (fan-support activity) crowd and general audiences is the next thing to watch. Where the thread split was over how to judge Tsubaki Factory’s underlying strength: some argued the song is good but the group’s numerical foundation is weak, while others countered that the current growth is impressive precisely because of that weak foundation.

The haul filled three reusable shopping bags and came to about ¥27,000 in total. On 5ch’s Geinou/Sports Breaking News+ board, reactions split over whether that amount is high or low for a family of five, with many posters comparing it to their own household’s food budget. The thread also buzzed with the shared experience that food costs balloon as kids get older, plus debate over whether bulk buying or frequent trips chasing sales saves more money.

    That's a bit over ¥100,000 for 4 weeks/a month

    Maybe about ¥20,000 above average

Good thing rice got cheaper recently

If you're good at cooking it's doable
Especially for growing kids in the Kanto area, this is actually doing pretty well

Even at my place in urban Kansai, with a family of 4 that has high-school and college-age boys, we easily spend ¥100,000 a month (not even counting the college kid eating out) — a bit over ¥20,000 a week is normal

She's got her feet on the ground

Even here there are a lot of posts praising her

Background and key points of this discussion

What Miki Fujimoto showed was “the receipt from a single bulk-buying trip,” and posters in the thread pointed out that it doesn’t include money spent on eating out or prepared/takeout meals (#51). Because of that, the simple math of “¥100,000 over 4 weeks” (#10) may not match her family’s actual monthly food spending. Several posts also noted that celebrities revealing their household budgets on TV may be a staged, image-conscious move on the production’s part (#71, #83), making it hard to judge the real situation from the yen amount alone. Where opinions in the thread split was on the single question of whether “¥27,000 a week for a family of five” is high or low — views differed sharply depending on the age of one’s kids and regional price differences (#39, #72). The thing readers might easily misread is treating this figure as the full picture of the Fujimoto household’s food spending.

  • Hiroyuki Ariyoshi’s Flagship Shows Are Getting Cancelled One After Another — 5ch: ‘The Man Who Inherited Shinsuke’s Position’

Several of Hiroyuki Ariyoshi’s regular TV programs have ended one after another since the start of this year, sparking talk on 5ch’s “Live Commentary” board (なんでも実況) that “an era is coming to an end.” Gendai reports that behind this lies both a drop in demand for his trademark “poison-tongued” persona — as online harassment on social media draws more scrutiny — and a tough “economic downturn” that’s squeezing ordinary people. On the thread, though, many questioned the recession narrative itself, asking “is the economy really that bad?” — pointing out that shareholders and big corporations are doing fine, and it’s really only the TV industry on the ground that’s sinking. There was also plenty of talk comparing him to comedian Shinsuke Shimada, with some speculating that his persona changed for the worse after he got married.

Hiroyuki Ariyoshi’s “Wave of Show Cancellations” Was Caused by “Japan’s Economic Downturn”… Where Does “Poison-Tongued Comedy” Go When It Clashes With an “Unstable Society”? (Gendai)

“With online slander and harassment becoming a serious issue, honestly, I really feel that poison-tongued humor just isn’t wanted anymore. Ordinary people’s lives are getting harder every day. In times like these, the sharp-tongued persona is the first to get weeded out. Nobody can beat the rough waves of the times.”

That’s the quiet sigh being breathed by programming executives across Japan’s commercial networks.

Ariyoshi's in the position he's in because he's valued for being the loyal dog who's first to jump in and defend legacy media whenever it comes under fire online.
I think it's less that he's genuinely popular with regular people and more that he's just good at getting in good with the TV networks.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Hiroyuki Ariyoshi built his career on a sharp-tongued “poison-tongue” persona, cutting into fellow celebrities, but in recent years he’s increasingly been compared to comedian Shinsuke Shimada. Gendai’s article pointed to two factors behind the show cancellations: that online harassment concerns have made poison-tongued humor harder to tolerate, and that the economic downturn is squeezing ordinary people’s lives. But on the thread, that second “recession” theory itself drew pushback. Commenters pointed out that real wages and stock prices haven’t necessarily worsened, and that the split between those doing well and those struggling gets obscured by a single phrase like “recession.” The thread also featured plenty of observations not covered in the article — like his performance hosting the Kohaku Uta Gassen (the New Year’s Eve song contest) and his skill at managing relationships with TV networks — pointing to changes in his own persona. So alongside the simple “changing times” narrative, there’s also a view that this reflects a real shift in his own comedic style.
