  • Komeda Coffee’s Coffee Tickets Only Work at the Store You Bought Them — 5ch Reacts: “Try That Elsewhere and You’ll Get a ‘Huh?’”

A thread titled “Let’s Talk About Komeda Coffee” popped up on 5ch’s cafe board, where regulars swapped stories about how the coffee tickets work, price hikes, and the shops’ atmosphere. The biggest surprise for many was learning that coffee tickets are basically only valid at the store where you bought them — a quirk attributed to the chain’s franchise model, which gives individual stores wide discretion over menus and pricing. Regulars were also surprised by bits of history they hadn’t known, like how the flagship first store was renovated to include an attached Okage-an sweets shop, and that the chain was under a South Korean investment fund from 2013 to 2017. Meanwhile, opinions were divided over the company’s longtime policy of allowing smoking at every seat.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Komeda Coffee is a chain with a high proportion of franchise locations, and each store has some freedom to set its own menu and prices. The thread’s hot topic — that coffee tickets are basically only usable at the store where they were purchased — stems from this same store-by-store discretion. It also came out that from 2013 to 2017 the chain was under the umbrella of the South Korean-backed investment fund MBK Partners, a bit of history that even longtime regulars were surprised to learn. Opinions were split over the chain’s long-standing policy of allowing smoking at every seat, with some calling it out of step with the times and others defending it as a matter of customer choice. Commenters also noted quirks unusual for a chain restaurant, such as portion sizes closer to a dedicated bakery and store-to-store differences — like how much cream or red bean paste gets piled on — stemming from its franchise structure.

  • Sprinters Stakes: Favorite Wins — 5ch: ‘Wanna See My Genius Betting Slip?’

Thread reacting to the September 27, 2026 JRA Grade 1 Sprinters Stakes. The thread title dismissed the race as ‘too easy,’ and sure enough, favorite Puro Magic took the win in a result with no major upsets. Afterward, posters flooded in bragging about cashing tickets — a ¥76,000 trio (sanrenpuku) here, a wide-box hit there — and the thread settled into a celebratory mood. Meanwhile, some chalked up World’s End’s strong run to ‘a track suited to milers,’ while opinions split on the payout itself, with some saying ‘¥460,000 for a favorite that popular is cheap’ and others countering ‘no, that’s actually generous.’

Honestly, I don't feel like I can lose, so I'm posting my ticket before the race. The track's chewed up, nobody's sure if inside or outside has the edge, and the whole power balance could flip depending on how one horse gets ridden. Given all that, might as well just pray for total chaos.
Wanted a little extra tension too, so I deliberately left out Puro Magic.

    Re: #95
You just won ¥190,000 and you're still complaining, lol.

Background and key points of this thread

The Sprinters Stakes is a Grade 1 sprint run over 1,200m on the Chukyo turf course, and in most years it’s known as a race that produces chaos. As post 19 in the thread points out, ‘the last two years both had huge payouts’ — and it’s this year’s comparatively clean result that led to the thread title calling it ‘too easy.’ While reports of winning tickets poured in throughout the thread, opinions on the payout itself split between ‘cheap’ and ‘actually generous.’ That’s because a horse’s win-odds popularity and the payout on combination bets like the trio (sanrenpuku) or trifecta (sanrentan) are two separate things — the same finish can feel very different depending on how you bet it. There was also debate over whether the track favored front-runners or closers, though no clear consensus emerged. Note: comments mocking individual jockeys’ skill were a separate topic from evaluating the race itself, and have been excluded from this article.

  • ANGERME Disbandment: “Nothing But Upside” — 5ch: “Tamenaga and Shimoinoya Would Just Transfer Elsewhere”

On the Hello! Project subforum, a thread listing out the “pros and cons” of ANGERME disbanding got lively. Against arguments for the upside — saving on personnel costs, less wasted hall space — came a steady stream of replies naming the downside: other members like Tamenaga and Shimoinoya transferring into different groups. The conversation eventually drifted into comparing 2026 attendance figures, lining up every group from Nogizaka46’s 500,000 down to ANGERME’s 90,000, sparking a side debate over which groups actually sell out their shows. An unconfirmed claim that the group is “apparently disbanding next year” was also dropped into the thread.

The attendance and “sold out” claims for each group in this thread are 5ch users’ own tallies, not official agency announcements. Likewise, the line claiming the group is “apparently disbanding next year” is just an anonymous post claiming insider knowledge — no official announcement has been confirmed. What makes this thread stand out from typical idol-disbandment coverage isn’t whether the disbandment itself is warranted, but a more personnel-reshuffle-minded question: if it happened, which group would each member move to, and would that transfer be a win or a loss for the group receiving them.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Hello! Project board) thread “ANGERME disbanding would apparently be nothing but upside.”

  • Asian Games Badminton: Backlash Erupts as Yuka Miyazaki’s Match Starts at 12:08 AM

The women’s badminton singles third-round match at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games between world No. 7 Yuka Miyazaki (20) and Rio Olympics silver medalist P.V. Sindhu (India) began at 12:08 AM on the 27th, well past midnight. Miyazaki lost in straight games, 0-2, in front of a near-empty arena. On 5channel’s “Geinou/Sports News+” board, posters criticized the organizers’ scheduling management, while others pointed out that late-night starts and delays aren’t uncommon in other sports like tennis — opinion was split.

<Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games: Badminton> ◇27th◇ Women’s Singles, Third Round ◇ Ichinomiya City General Gymnasium

The start time of world No. 7 Yuka Miyazaki’s (20, ACT SAIKYO) match has stirred controversy.

Her third-round match against P.V. Sindhu (India), the 2016 Rio Olympics singles silver medalist, kicked off at an astonishing 12:08 AM on the 27th. In an unusual turn of events that crossed over into the next calendar day, Miyazaki fell in straight games, 0-2 (9-21, 13-21). With the match happening at such a shocking hour, it played out to a near-empty venue.

According to AI, that match actually started around 2-3 PM on a Friday and wrapped up by evening
That day's first match started at 9 AM, and Suzuki vs. Federer was the third match, finishing in the evening — so the "5 AM start" seems to be a myth
The "5 AM" bit apparently comes from the line for same-day tickets already forming by 5 AM

Matches finish at different times depending on the court, so normally they'd announce a court change and just keep things moving to whichever court is free
I mean, there are multiple courts for a reason
Instead they left the open courts idle and just kept waiting on the match that was dragging on, over and over, until it got to this hour

    Re: #74
If it had started on schedule, fine,
but this kept getting pushed back again and again — that's what makes it so bad

Background and Key Points of This Story

This tournament had already drawn scrutiny over how athletes’ meals were handled (see comment 7), and this latest midnight start was seen as a further operational issue on top of that. Because badminton runs multiple courts at a single venue, later matches are prone to getting pushed back when an earlier one drags on. While some in the thread noted that “this kind of delay is chronic in tennis too,” the popular claim that the Suzuki-Federer match “started in the middle of the night” was corrected as false within the thread’s own discussion — a reminder that such anecdotes can spread widely without being fact-checked. Since late-night starts affect both audience turnout and athletes’ physical condition, an explanation from the tournament organizers about how this happened is likely to be the next point of focus.

  • Monster Strike Hits 13th Anniversary as Top Trend While Puzzle & Dragons’ 8-Year TV Show Quietly Ends

Over on 5ch’s Newsspeed VIP board, posters were chatting about the latest in mobile gaming. The main topic was the contrasting fortunes of Monster Strike and Puzzle & Dragons: with its 13th-anniversary flagship livestream coming up that same day, Monster Strike looked set to top the trending charts, while word came in that Puzzle & Dragons’ TV show and anime, running for 8 years, was quietly coming to an end. Theories on Monster Strike’s staying power included its “broad age range” and “generous free handouts that let you play without paying,” and posters also swapped notes on what they were playing, from Suikoden: Fantasy (NTE) to Dokkan Battle and Mahjong Soul.

    54AnonymousSep 27, 2026 14:20

For one, its age range is wide. It's not like Uma Musume or idol games that target "weak men" (jakusha dansei, internet slang for socially/economically marginalized men), or FGO for light otaku — the breadth of its playerbase is just different. It's closer to Pokémon.
Because it's such a huge, high-revenue title, they can hand out tons of free stuff, so you can play multiplayer without spending a dime — that's why the player count is absurdly high.

By the way, today's their 13th-anniversary flagship stream, so it'll probably top the trends. Meanwhile, Puzzle & Dragons' last TV variety show and anime, after 8 years, quietly wraps up today.

    (っ´ω`c) That's sad…

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Monster Strike is a title that Mixi (now MIXI) began distributing in 2013, making 2026 its 13th year. It’s a regular on domestic sales rankings, known for its wide reach down to so-called “casual” players thanks to free gacha giveaways and easy multiplayer access. Puzzle & Dragons, on the other hand, is a title GungHo launched in 2012 that has run a long-running anime and variety show on networks like TV Tokyo, but according to posts in the thread, that show is quietly coming to an end after 8 years. The two titles are often compared as pillars of the early days of Japan’s domestic mobile-game industry, but views from the thread like “they draw different audiences” or “it’s popular because you can play for free” are just individual users’ impressions, not backed by official sales data or user numbers — worth keeping in mind.

Totally get that. Miyazaki (Hidetaka Miyazaki, the FromSoftware director) is a phenomenal creator.

    Background and Key Points

On 5ch’s VIP board, there’s a long-running tradition where a regular posting under a fixed handle (a “kotehan”) declares at some set time that they’ll “answer every single reply,” then works through whatever questions or jabs get thrown their way. This thread followed that same format, with questions covering remedies for migraines and hangovers, health topics like depression and bipolar disorder, favorite reading habits, Cthulhu Mythos recommendations, and AI’s impact on jobs. There was even a reunion moment with a regular who remembered past exchanges, and the whole thing stayed calm throughout, with no conflict or flame wars. Note: the thread also included an exchange where the poster claiming to be the real Kururi posted a face photo and got teased over their looks — since that can’t be verified and amounts to mocking someone’s appearance, it’s been left out of this article.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Nyuusoku VIP) thread “I go by Byosoin Kururi, and since it’s Sunday morning I’ll answer every reply.“

  • Who’s the “cancer” of the gaming industry? 5ch says: “Microsoft is the final boss”

A thread titled “Who would you call the cancer cells of the game industry?” appeared on 5ch’s Hardware & Industry (“Geha”) board, and it quickly filled up with complaints about the business decisions of major publishers like Microsoft, Sony, and Square Enix. The biggest targets were Microsoft’s ongoing spree of studio closures, subscription-based sales models like Xbox Game Pass, and the trend of Japanese RPGs becoming overly movie-like. Depending on who was posting, the definition of “cancer” shifted wildly — PC versus console, whether Vtuber-driven marketing actually works — and the debate sprawled on without ever converging on a single answer.

Take, for instance, a certain director who blows money on Hollywood star casting that has nothing to do with actual gameplay, just to make a crappy game. The cost of MS's layoffs is basically funding this guy.

A cancer cell is an abnormal cell whose genes get damaged and mutate, causing it to ignore the body's commands and multiply without limit.

In other words, to qualify you need to:
    1. Have once been normal, but mutated
    2. Act with total disregard for the game industry
    3. Multiply uncontrollably and eat away at the industry

It has to meet all three of these.

Correct, Microsoft is the final boss.
Or rather, it's Big Tech as a whole — Microsoft included — plus the military-industrial complex, and the nations and investors tied to them.
In gaming specifically, Microsoft and the Chinese conglomerates are the root of the chaos.

They're dragging games away from their essence as play, and they're increasingly becoming tools for politics and corporate power struggles.

    Re: #94
    No way that works.
Things like the Switch 2 have garbage specs and market size next to PC — there's no way you could fold it into the console camp.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

In recent years, the game industry has seen a steady stream of studio closures and layoffs driven by major publishers. Microsoft shut down several studios in 2024, including Tango Gameworks and Arkane Austin, while Sony dissolved its former Japan Studio back in 2021 — corporate restructuring at the top has gone hand in hand with a shrinking development scene. Developers themselves have pointed out that subscription-based sales models like Xbox Game Pass eat into individual game sales, and the thread’s observation that “games which take a long time to finish don’t mix well with a play-it-for-free model” follows that same logic. Meanwhile, the debate over whether Vtuber-driven promotion is worthwhile, or over whether PC or consoles are what really keeps the industry afloat, is a classic staple of 5ch’s notorious “geha” (hardware wars) arguments — not the kind of topic that ever gets settled objectively. The thread also contained plenty of insults and personal attacks against specific companies, and those posts have been left out of this article.

  • “The Noodles Are a Completely Different Thing,” “The Decline Is Incredible” — Fans Slam Suke-san Udon as the Chain Expands

Suke-san Udon, a popular udon chain that originated in Kitakyushu, is drawing complaints on social media that “the noodle quality has dropped” as it expands its store count. It started with an article from Weekly Woman PRIME in which the poster’s younger brother lamented that “Suke-san Udon has gotten incredibly bad.” On 5ch, the discussion thread broadened to cover acquisitions, price hikes, and flavor changes at major chains like Marugame Seimen and Tsurutontan, splitting opinion between those who believe “quality drops after an acquisition” and those who countered “just eat it without worrying about taste differences.”

After an acquisition, they have to prove the purchase wasn't a mistake.
The easiest way to do that is cutting costs — or more specifically, skimping on ingredients.

Tokyo is where people from all over Japan converge.
So they probably have to smooth out the regional flavor quirks to make something everyone in Japan will like.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Suke-san Udon is a chain founded in 1976 that originated in Kitakyushu, and in recent years it has been expanding outside its home prefecture, including into the Kanto region. In the udon industry, major players have seen a string of M&A deals and price revisions — from Marugame Seimen’s price hikes to Tsurutontan’s acquisition by Saint Marc Holdings — so the concern raised in the thread that “quality drops after an acquisition” reflects broader distrust toward the industry as a whole rather than an issue specific to Suke-san alone. At the same time, there were counterarguments like “just eat it without worrying about taste differences,” and it’s easy to overlook that perceptions of taste vary a lot from person to person, and that rising costs for raw materials like wheat are a challenge shared by every chain, not just this one.

  • ANGERME Fans Vow Boycott Until Agency Stops Overpushing Juice=Juice — 5ch: “I’m Not Showing Up to Shows”

On a 5ch thread (Japan’s largest anonymous message board, the successor to 2channel) where Hello! Project fans gather, a poster claiming to be an ANGERME fan declared a boycott of the group’s management agency, vowing not to attend any more “genba”* (fan slang for live shows/events) until the company stops its “gori-oshi”* — aggressively over-promoting — of labelmates Juice=Juice. The complaint stems from a perceived imbalance: Juice=Juice has reportedly been favored lately with TV appearances and larger Christmas-event venues, while ANGERME’s own tour has been playing to visibly empty seats. The thread quickly filled with pushback, with several posters pointing out that ANGERME itself went through its own heavily-promoted era in the past — turning the discussion into a broader argument over which Hello! Project group actually gets the star treatment.

Project runs several idol groups in parallel at any given time — currently including Morning Musume., ANGERME, Juice=Juice, Tsubaki Factory, BEYOOOOONDS, and OCHA NORMA — and disputes over which group gets TV slots, cross-group collaborations, or larger tour venues have flared up among fans periodically for years. As several posters in the thread note, ANGERME itself went through a period of being the group accused of receiving preferential “gori-oshi” treatment, leading some to frame this boycott as simply a reversal of roles. It’s worth flagging that claims in the thread about “empty halls” and the agency “running losses” are not official figures — they reflect individual posters’ impressions and secondhand claims on an anonymous board, not disclosed ticket sales or financial data from the talent agency. Likewise, the “boycott” is the stated position of a single anonymous poster; nothing in this thread confirms it reflects an organized fan movement.

  • Palworld pop-up store drops ticket requirement — 5ch: ‘More crowded at the Pokémon Center lol’

A pop-up store for the game Palworld became a hot topic on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board after it abruptly scrapped its planned entry-ticket system and switched to open admission for anyone. In the thread, the theory that “maybe not enough customers showed up” spread as users debated why tickets were no longer needed, and the discussion turned into a comparison between photos posted from the venue and how crowded Pokémon Centers tend to be. The exchange put a spotlight on how attendance is trending at merchandise events for popular IPs.

Wonder why that could be~ (said in a totally flat, deadpan tone)
    6AnonymousSep 27, 2026 13:43
It's a system glitch, so making it free entry is the only option

    Re: #6
If it's a popular IP store, you'd expect a ton of people to show up — are you sure it's fine without tickets?? 🥺

Running a limited-time event in Shibuya and not even needing tickets — that says a lot…

There's no way that could happen with super-popular Palworld 🥺

I mean, without scalpers around that's pretty normal, honestly
But I guess no scalpers swarming just means it's not popular

Um… there was also that SIE (Sony Interactive Entertainment) Astro Bot hands-on event in Shibuya that was completely empty, you know

Scalpers probably bet on the Palworld cards as a long shot, got burned, and gave up on it

Maybe this store is just a clearance sale for that leftover unsold merch

So basically: Management ("Uh oh, literally nobody's showing up, we're in the red! Gotta save budget wherever we can! I know — tickets aren't even needed, let's just cut that too!")

    Is that what happened?

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

Merchandise events typically hand out entry tickets to prevent chaos from attendance exceeding expectations, so when tickets suddenly become unnecessary, it’s often because turnout fell short of projections. The thread split between those who saw this change as “proof nobody showed up” and those who chalked it up to “just a system glitch that forced an abrupt change in operations.” The venue photos posted only capture a specific moment in time, and crowd levels can vary depending on conditions — right after opening versus just before closing, for instance — so judging total attendance from photos alone may be premature. The Pokémon Center photos used for comparison could also be from different stores or times of day, so a simple side-by-side comparison should be taken with a grain of salt.
