  • Sato Teruaki’s Back-to-Back 100-RBI Seasons Spark Debate: Who Was Each Team’s Last Player to Do It?

On the Nanjyo (なんJ) baseball board, Hanshin Tigers slugger Sato Teruaki’s second consecutive 100-RBI season sparked a thread investigating which player was the last to notch back-to-back 100-RBI seasons for each of Japan’s 12 pro teams. Posters threw out names like Kurihara Kenta (Hiroshima), Luis Lopez, Nakata Sho, and Fujimura Fumio for various teams, though mixed-up names and years led to repeated corrections. The thread eventually drifted into a story about Hara Tatsunori, who was blasted as “unfit to be Yomiuri’s cleanup hitter” in a season where he hit .300 with 30 home runs and 100 RBIs — sparking debate over whether Giants fans of that era were being too harsh in comparing him to legends Nagashima and Oh, and whether that harsh judgment was actually fair.

    Re: #82
Well, I never personally witnessed the bashing against Hara in real time, so I can't say for sure, but I definitely felt that older generation's mindset of "Nagashima and Oh are gods, everyone else is a letdown."

    Background and Key Points

The RBI totals and years posted in this thread are just posters’ recollections offered up from memory — not checked against official records, as shown by how the numbers for Kurihara Kenta and Lopez had to be corrected multiple times. Readers should treat this as “unverified info crowdsourced by volunteers,” not confirmed data. The heated debate late in the thread over Hara Tatsunori being blasted as “unfit for cleanup” stems from the unique position he was in: taking over the Giants’ cleanup spot right after two of the biggest stars in NPB history, Nagashima Shigeo and Oh Sadaharu. Opinions in the thread split between those who actually witnessed that criticism firsthand back then and those who, looking only at the stat line, doubted that getting bashed after a .300/30-homer/100-RBI season could be anything but an exaggeration — highlighting a generational gap with those who never experienced the mood of that era directly.

  • Hikaru and Kosuke Minowa to File Class-Action Suit Against Kobunsha — 5ch Fires Back at Donation Drive: ‘Pay for It Yourselves’

On September 26, YouTuber Hikaru (4.98 million subscribers) announced he’s teaming up with Gentosha editor Kosuke Minowa (190,000 subscribers) — who is already suing Kobunsha in a separate matter — to back a class-action lawsuit on behalf of anyone harmed by coverage from the photo tabloid FLASH. The trigger was an article SmartFLASH published on September 22 claiming Hikaru had lost his enthusiasm for his rice business, “Genki da Kome.” The announcement also called for donations to cover legal costs, sparking a mixed reaction on 5ch — some asked “Why use other people’s money when you’re rich?” while others wondered “Why sue FLASH and not Bunshun?”

On September 26, Hikaru (4.98 million subscribers) posted a video titled “I’m teaming up with Minowa-san to file a class-action suit against Kobunsha. Please lend us your support!” He announced he was joining forces with Gentosha editor Kosuke Minowa (190,000 subscribers), who already has a lawsuit underway against Kobunsha, to gather people harmed by FLASH’s coverage and push the joint lawsuit forward.

A clash with Kobunsha over rice-business coverage

The conflict between Hikaru and Kobunsha stems from an article published on September 22 by SmartFLASH, FLASH’s web edition, claiming that Hikaru had lost his passion for his rice-business venture, “Genki da Kome.”

It's basically built on lazy 'kotatsu articles' (pieces written without leaving the couch, just rehashing social media) — a worked match over whose fanbase bleeds more money.

Background and Key Points of This Story

Kosuke Minowa was already suing Kobunsha over a separate matter, so teaming up with Hikaru builds on that existing fight. What split opinion on the thread was this: both men appear to command audiences in the millions and income to match, so why do they need to solicit donations from the general public? The fact that no return was offered to supporters also fueled questions like “what’s in it for donors?” At the same time, there’s long-standing resentment toward Kobunsha-affiliated outlets (SmartFLASH, Josei Jishin, etc.) for churning out lazy “kotatsu articles,” so criticism of Hikaru and Minowa’s fundraising approach and criticism of Kobunsha’s reporting practices both flared up at once. Some also pointed out that the lawsuit targets FLASH rather than Bunshun. As of this writing, it isn’t clear how much money has actually been raised, how many people have come forward as affected parties, or how the lawsuit is progressing.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Geisports Sokuhou+) thread “Hikaru and Kosuke Minowa Head Into All-Out War With Kobunsha, Recruiting FLASH’s Alleged Victims — Also Calling for Donations: ‘This Is Crowdfunding Fueled by Rage’.”

The thin turnout at a release event held by Hello! Project’s new group Rosy Chronicle at Kobe Harborland has become a hot topic on 5ch’s Hello! Project board. The thread’s comparison point, Juice=Juice, is a group that — as one post put it — “took 13 years to finally get here,” having formed more than a decade ago, so the gap in drawing power partly reflects the gap in how long each group has been active. That said, turnout is also heavily shaped by whether a venue is indoor or outdoor, the weather, and how close the location is to Osaka or Tokyo — posts in the thread pointed to geographic factors like “it’s far from here” and “Harborland itself is a ghost town” as reasons to be cautious about treating turnout as a simple measure of popularity. The remark that “220 shows on the road gets you the Budokan” refers to the long regional tour Juice=Juice ground through before reaching their Budokan performance, and reads as a call for the new group to walk that same path.

  • Killing Time on a 2-Hour Train Ride: 5ch Thread Reveals ‘Five Personalities, Not Counting the Main One’

The thread kicked off with a post reading “I’m bored, let’s talk,” and rolled along through stories like a 2.5-hour commute to college, the question of whether you’re supposed to take a girl’s “lol” on LINE at face value, and the trivial debate over whether to open a window while vacuuming. Partway through, one of the posters who’d been chatting revealed they were “up to five personalities, not counting the main one,” and the conversation shifted into claims of multiple personalities. As is typical for an anonymous board where nothing can be verified, reactions split between people asking earnest follow-up questions and people just poking fun.

    Background and Talking Points

Since 5ch’s Newsspeed VIP board is fully anonymous, there is no way to verify posters’ personal backstories or claims like “multiple personalities” — whether any of it is true is anyone’s guess. Posts claiming Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) periodically go viral on social media too, but aside from the question of medical diagnosis, there’s also a role-play-style culture of performing distinct personas for fun, which is likely why the thread’s reactions split between people asking earnest follow-up questions and people just joking around. Meanwhile, everyday trivia like commute times or housework habits are a staple topic on anonymous boards — a way to peek into “some stranger’s daily life.” Note that portions of the exchange that devolved into personal insults have been left out of this article.

  • AKB48 and Comedy Duo Evers Team Up for New Show on NTV Next Spring — 5ch Asks: ‘Are There Even Any Fans Left?’

At their concert at K Arena Yokohama on the 26th, AKB48 announced a new co-hosted show with comedy duo Evers, set to begin airing on Nippon TV next spring. The two are already running a YouTube series called “AKB48 no Zenryoku Entame Gakuen” (AKB48’s All-Out Entertainment School), and the terrestrial TV show is essentially an extension of that project. Reactions on 5ch were mixed: some welcomed the “promotion” of a YouTube-born project to broadcast TV, while others questioned whether AKB48 still has the name recognition or demand to justify it, and opinions were split on how good Evers actually are as hosts.

On the 26th, AKB48 held “AKB48 THREE CONCEPTS LIVE in K-Arena Yokohama” at K Arena Yokohama.

Near the end of the show, it was announced that a new program co-starring comedy duo Evers would begin airing on the Nippon TV network next spring.

The group currently runs a YouTube channel called “AKB no Su wo Dasu Channel” (The Channel Where AKB Shows Its True Colors), where they broadcast “AKB48 no Zenryoku Entame Gakuen” together with Evers. The chemistry between hosts Evers and the AKB48 members has gone over well with fans on both sides. Now the powerhouse pair is stepping up to a new challenge together.

The funny-man (boke) of the duo just isn't built for unscripted talk segments.

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

This new show follows a pattern common in recent Japanese variety programming: grow a concept on YouTube first, then bring it to terrestrial TV once it’s proven itself. The AKB48-Evers pairing looks like a broadcast expansion built on the strong audience response to their existing YouTube series, “AKB48 no Zenryoku Entame Gakuen.” The main point of disagreement in the thread centered on AKB48’s current drawing power — posters who remember the group’s original heyday voiced skepticism, while fans who discovered the show via YouTube reacted more favorably. On Evers, commenters drew a distinction between their skill as a manzai duo and their ability as TV hosts: separate from their popularity as a comedy act, the debate was really about whether they’re seasoned enough to host a terrestrial broadcast. Worth noting that specific details about the show’s content and cast lineup weren’t disclosed as of the original article, so much of the thread’s discussion remains speculative.

  • Why Won’t NEETs Work? 5ch Erupts Into Debate: ‘It’s Their Own Life’

A thread titled “Why do these so-called NEETs never work?” appeared on 5ch’s “Nanademo Jikkyo G” board, sparking a back-and-forth over employment and personal freedom. The thread’s original poster held firm to the position that “if you can’t explain your reason for not working, don’t butt in,” repeatedly pushing back against other posters. In response, commenters offered a range of conflicting views: “If their parents allow it, it’s their own life,” “There’s no real reason, they’re just lazy,” and “As long as they’re not bothering anyone else, that’s their right.” The discussion branched into finer points too, like the quality of one’s hobbies and whether not working should come with a sense of shame, but in the end the two sides never found common ground and the argument just kept going.

As a NEET, Mondays don't scare me at all — it feels like Friday just shows up in the blink of an eye lol

    Background and Talking Points

Administratively, “NEET” originally referred to a specific slice of the 15-34 non-working population who aren’t in school or doing housework, but on forums the term is usually used more loosely to mean anyone who isn’t working, and this thread proceeds without ever pinning down a strict definition either. Threads like this tend to follow a familiar pattern: the position that “not working is your own responsibility” talks past the position that “how you live is your own business as long as you’re not bothering anyone else,” and neither side ever really meets in the middle — exactly what played out again here. On top of that, these kinds of threads are often kicked off by a deliberately provocative post, and the discussion has a tendency to slide into personal attacks partway through. This thread was no exception, with some exchanges devolving into insults that treated the other person as if they had a disability, so those portions have been left out of this write-up.

  • “Why Would You Mark Up Someone’s House Without Permission?” — Electrician Writes Room Names on Breakers in Permanent Marker, Sparks Debate

A post claiming that an electrician wrote room names like “living room” directly onto the breakers of a home’s distribution panel in permanent marker sparked a split reaction on 5channel’s News Speed+ board. The contractor apparently meant no harm — the labels were likely meant to make it easy to tell which breaker controlled which room in an emergency — but from the homeowner’s point of view, it left the panel looking messy and carried an uncomfortable sense of “this was done without my permission.” The thread quickly moved beyond simple etiquette, with posters raising practical questions like who actually owns the breaker panel in the first place, and whether writing on masking tape instead would have solved the whole problem.

    Re: #6
The breakers for each room belong to the homeowner.

Mapping out and listing every circuit in your own home yourself is honestly something you should do within your first week of moving in.
With just one voltage-tester screwdriver, you can check them one by one, flipping breakers as you go.

Built-in outlets aren't always neatly divided by room per breaker,
so if you don't know the layout you'll be stuck when adding equipment and need to know amp capacity, or when restoring power after something goes wrong.

    Re: #193
At the very least, it's not the electrician's.

Background and Key Points of the Debate

A home’s distribution panel is separate from the service-drop and amp breakers managed by the power company, and is generally treated as the homeowner’s own property to manage. The thread split over one central question: was this “a practical courtesy from a contractor trying to make the site easier to work with,” or “unauthorized alteration of the client’s property”? Plenty of middle-ground suggestions came up, like using a removable method such as masking tape, but counterarguments noting that tape itself draws complaints meant no side landed a decisive blow. A misconception many readers fall into is assuming “breaker = power company property” — in reality, the main (earth-leakage/safety) breaker is usually owned by the household, and this mismatch in assumptions is a big part of why the debate talked past itself.

  • “6 Million Yen at 45 Is Winning” — 5ch Splits Over Income Debate

A salary thread on 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyo G” board sparked a divide over whether a 45-year-old earning 6 million yen a year counts as a winner or as clueless about the real world. It kicked off with a post claiming “there’s no way you hit 10 million unless you’re a company president,” which drew a wave of pushback from posters claiming to work at major corporations or Nikkei 225-listed firms, saying they’d cleared 10 million yen in their 30s. Meanwhile, the claim that “Tokyo’s average income is over 7 million yen” was met with counters arguing you should look at the median, not the average — turning the thread into a debate over how to even read the statistics. Differences between rural and urban areas, and between big corporations and small-to-midsize firms, only made things messier.

Background and Key Points of This Debate

According to the National Tax Agency’s Statistical Survey of Actual Status for Salary in the Private Sector, the average salary for all wage earners nationwide falls short of 5 million yen. A 6 million yen income at 45 isn’t low by the national average alone, but in the thread, the more posters narrowed things down to “Tokyo,” “big corporations,” or “Nikkei 225,” the higher the numbers jumped — and that gap became the spark for the conflict. There were broadly two points of contention. One was a disagreement over how to read statistics — whether to use the average or the median as the benchmark (replies 9, 12, 16). The other was how far it’s fair to generalize differences based on company size or region as “normal.” Several posters cited themselves as examples working at major corporations to push back on “you can’t hit 10 million unless you’re a president,” but out of concern for being identified, no proof was ever offered, so the truth of these claims can’t be confirmed. Income threads also come with the usual 5ch caveat that self-reported numbers tend to get exaggerated, so it’s best to take any of these figures with a grain of salt.

※This article is an excerpt and summary based on the 5ch (“Nandemo Jikkyo G”) thread “The public says “6 million at 45 is a winner,” “Calling that a loser is way too out of touch,” “There’s no way you hit 10 million unless you’re a president lol”.”

  • ‘Whale Graveyard’ Discovered 7,000m Deep — 5ch: ‘Maybe It’s Like a Royal Tomb’

In the deep sea roughly 7,000 meters down off the west coast of Australia, researchers have discovered a vast graveyard-like site where the bones of nearly 500 whales have gathered. Reported by National Geographic and picked up via Yahoo! News, the find became a hot topic — most of the bones belong to beaked whales, a group whose ecology remains largely mysterious, with some possibly representing new species, and the oldest bones dating back around 5.3 million years. On 5ch’s Science News+ board, an anthropomorphizing theory that the whales deliberately chose this area as a place to die clashed with a more level-headed theory that the carcasses simply accumulated there due to ocean currents and terrain, and opinions were also split on whether 500 whales over 5 million years counts as “a lot.”

    17AnonymousSep 26, 2026 09:56
I don't think whales dive much past 3,000m.
So I doubt it's a case of them heading toward some kind of landmark on the seafloor.
It's probably more about the effect of slopes and terrain, plus weak deep-sea currents that make things gather there.
    19AnonymousSep 26, 2026 10:48
If it were just accumulation from currents,
you'd expect things other than whales to pile up too.
    Since they're specifically saying whales,
that means the whales headed there themselves as a place to die.

    Also, even though they're mammals,
    unlike humans,
their bodies are built to handle the deep sea, and it's been confirmed they can dive to around 3,000m.
They may be capable of going even deeper than that.

    Acute oxygen deprivation.

Background and Key Points of Debate

Most of the bones found this time belong to beaked whales, a group whose ecology is still poorly understood. The research team surveyed the seafloor roughly 7,000 meters deep off the west coast of Australia using a submersible, and the oldest bones date back as far as about 5.3 million years. On the thread, the debate centered on an anthropomorphizing theory that whales deliberately choose this spot as a place to die versus a theory that the bones simply happened to accumulate there due to ocean currents and terrain. Opinions were also split on whether 500 whales over 5 million years should be considered “a lot” or “not a big deal.” There was also a comment claiming the whales “died of decompression sickness,” but this is a misunderstanding — whales dive by collapsing only their lungs, a mechanism entirely different from human-style decompression sickness. The point that bones survive better in the deep sea than in shallower waters, thanks to the low temperature and low oxygen slowing decomposition, is a factor also cited in actual oceanography alongside the current-accumulation theory, so some of the thread’s speculation isn’t far off the mark.

  • Oda Sakura: ’18th-Gen Members Didn’t Know SMAP, and It Shocked Me’ — 5ch: ‘We Can’t Even Be Shocked Anymore’

Morning Musume’s Oda Sakura revealed that the newly joined 18th-generation members, who are still in junior high, didn’t know who SMAP was — and Akashiya Sanma responded, “It’s been 10 years since they broke up, so that kind of thing is only going to keep happening.” This sparked a broader debate on 5ch about how idols and Johnny’s talent get remembered by later generations. Many argued that TV variety shows fade quickly with the times, and that only work preserved as songs or films manages to survive across generations, while others countered that it’s a mystery why SMAP or Morning Musume ever got so popular in the first place — opinions were split.

    · I'm now in Morning Musume with kids who were born after I joined.
Sanma: Ah, so that's the kind of thing that happens now.
Oda: Yes. Four new junior-high schoolers just joined, and three of them have been alive for less time than my own career in Morning Musume. We've got members who are 14 and under now. Apparently this is a first in our 30-year history — the first time ever for Morning Musume.

Johnny's thoroughly banned any online distribution of their footage, so it probably won't survive in people's memories.
Plus there's that whole dark history (the Johnny Kitagawa abuse scandal) that makes it awkward to handle.
Once TV loses its influence, they'll be the first thing erased from history too.

Everyone under 50 these days was born after Sanma debuted, so nobody can afford to be shocked by stuff like this anymore.

Pink Lady and Candies are still known even by people born after they broke up, but SMAP and Arashi probably won't be remembered by later generations.
Variety shows just don't last through the ages.
    Only songs really survive long-term.
Johnny's had plenty of popularity, but they never left behind songs that stuck around for posterity.
    7AnonymousSep 27, 2026 06:16
It's not really that shocking a story — normally kids wouldn't know Morning Musume either
    9AnonymousSep 27, 2026 06:18
Johnny's media restrictions were so strict that it's hard for people to even remember their faces
    10AnonymousSep 27, 2026 06:18
What survives for posterity is songs and films — Johnny's hasn't left behind lasting work in either. The variety shows and TV dramas they dominated just don't endure.

True. Yamaguchi Momoe's 'Red Series' dramas run to almost 40 episodes — I can't even bring myself to watch them.
I did watch the film 'Zesshou' (Love Song),
but the Izumi Masako version was better.

Around the same time BTS was subtitling and spreading their YouTube show 'RUN BTS' worldwide, Johnny's was blacking out its own talents' faces on magazine covers shared on social media.
Of course they're going to lose that battle.

It carries on to the next generation when the parents were fans themselves and show their kids the old footage.
In fact a lot of Hello! Project members say they became fans because their moms used to watch it.

With Johnny's, does that even happen? And even if it did, would it translate into boys wanting to become idols themselves?
Given that whole scandal, parents can hardly recommend it to their kids anyway lol

Still, it's kind of fascinating how a nationally beloved idol group like that can just fade away into something nobody even recognizes anymore

They were already superstar idols before SMAP×SMAP even started, doing shows like 'San Suma' and 24-hour radio personality gigs.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

SMAP disbanded in 2016, meaning exactly 10 years have passed as of 2026. Morning Musume, meanwhile, has kept going for over 30 years since its formation, cycling through generation after generation of members. The 18th generation at the center of this story includes current junior-high schoolers who joined in 2026, and the backdrop here is that this is the first time in the group’s history that incoming members are younger than the group itself has existed. What split opinion on the thread was the question of what actually survives for later generations: the majority view was that music and films get remembered across generations, while TV variety shows and dramas fade quickly once they stop airing. That said, some pointed out that it’s a mystery why SMAP was ever so popular in the first place, and others noted exceptions like ‘Sekai ni Hitotsu Dake no Hana,’ which survives as a song — so no simple consensus emerged. It’s also worth noting, since the comments alone don’t spell this out, that Johnny’s agency’s historical reluctance to let its footage and information spread online (a point raised in comparison with BTS) is cited as one reason its legacy is less likely to carry over to younger generations.

※This article is compiled and summarized from the 5ch (Hello! Project) thread: “[Sad News] Oda Sakura: ‘I was shocked the 18th generation doesn’t know SMAP’ — Akashiya Sanma: ‘Yeah, that figures, it’s been 10 years since they disbanded, so this kind of thing is only going to become more common’.”
