  • ‘Whale Graveyard’ Discovered 7,000m Deep — 5ch: ‘Maybe It’s Like a Royal Tomb’

In the deep sea roughly 7,000 meters down off the west coast of Australia, researchers have discovered a vast graveyard-like site where the bones of nearly 500 whales have gathered. Reported by National Geographic and picked up via Yahoo! News, the find became a hot topic — most of the bones belong to beaked whales, a group whose ecology remains largely mysterious, with some possibly representing new species, and the oldest bones dating back around 5.3 million years. On 5ch’s Science News+ board, an anthropomorphizing theory that the whales deliberately chose this area as a place to die clashed with a more level-headed theory that the carcasses simply accumulated there due to ocean currents and terrain, and opinions were also split on whether 500 whales over 5 million years counts as “a lot.”

The Oldest Dates Back About 5.3 Million Years; Most Are Bones of the Mysterious Beaked Whale, With Possible New Species Too

A research team surveying the deep sea off the west coast of Australia by submersible has discovered a vast mass grave made up of the remains of nearly 500 whales.

Apparently when a whale dies, gas builds up inside its body at first and it floats. The fact that they all end up piled in one spot feels like it's due to ocean currents.

…shouldn't that be the reaction here?
    14AnonymousSep 26, 2026 09:28
So does that mean they have a funeral culture?
If so, they must have some concept of death, and maybe even religion

    17AnonymousSep 26, 2026 09:56
I don't think whales dive much past 3,000m.
So I doubt it's a case of them heading toward some kind of landmark on the seafloor.
It's probably more about the effect of slopes and terrain, plus weak deep-sea currents that make things gather there.
    19AnonymousSep 26, 2026 10:48
If it were just accumulation from currents,
you'd expect things other than whales to pile up too.
    Since they're specifically saying whales,
that means the whales headed there themselves as a place to die.

    Also, even though they're mammals,
    unlike humans,
their bodies are built to handle the deep sea, and it's been confirmed they can dive to around 3,000m.
They may be capable of going even deeper than that.

Only the unsupported lung cavity would collapse, and for species that exhale before diving, there's no compression at all.

    Acute oxygen deprivation.

Background and Key Points of Debate

Most of the bones found this time belong to beaked whales, a group whose ecology is still poorly understood. The research team surveyed the seafloor roughly 7,000 meters deep off the west coast of Australia using a submersible, and the oldest bones date back as far as about 5.3 million years. On the thread, the debate centered on an anthropomorphizing theory that whales deliberately choose this spot as a place to die versus a theory that the bones simply happened to accumulate there due to ocean currents and terrain. Opinions were also split on whether 500 whales over 5 million years should be considered “a lot” or “not a big deal.” There was also a comment claiming the whales “died of decompression sickness,” but this is a misunderstanding — whales dive by collapsing only their lungs, a mechanism entirely different from human-style decompression sickness. The point that bones survive better in the deep sea than in shallower waters, thanks to the low temperature and low oxygen slowing decomposition, is a factor also cited in actual oceanography alongside the current-accumulation theory, so some of the thread’s speculation isn’t far off the mark.

  • Oda Sakura: ’18th-Gen Members Didn’t Know SMAP, and It Shocked Me’ — 5ch: ‘We Can’t Even Be Shocked Anymore’

Morning Musume’s Oda Sakura revealed that the newly joined 18th-generation members, who are still in junior high, didn’t know who SMAP was — and Akashiya Sanma responded, “It’s been 10 years since they broke up, so that kind of thing is only going to keep happening.” This sparked a broader debate on 5ch about how idols and Johnny’s talent get remembered by later generations. Many argued that TV variety shows fade quickly with the times, and that only work preserved as songs or films manages to survive across generations, while others countered that it’s a mystery why SMAP or Morning Musume ever got so popular in the first place — opinions were split.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

SMAP disbanded in 2016, meaning exactly 10 years have passed as of 2026. Morning Musume, meanwhile, has kept going for over 30 years since its formation, cycling through generation after generation of members. The 18th generation at the center of this story includes current junior-high schoolers who joined in 2026, and the backdrop here is that this is the first time in the group’s history that incoming members are younger than the group itself has existed. What split opinion on the thread was the question of what actually survives for later generations: the majority view was that music and films get remembered across generations, while TV variety shows and dramas fade quickly once they stop airing. That said, some pointed out that it’s a mystery why SMAP was ever so popular in the first place, and others noted exceptions like ‘Sekai ni Hitotsu Dake no Hana,’ which survives as a song — so no simple consensus emerged. It’s also worth noting, since the comments alone don’t spell this out, that Johnny’s agency’s historical reluctance to let its footage and information spread online (a point raised in comparison with BTS) is cited as one reason its legacy is less likely to carry over to younger generations.

※This article is compiled and summarized from the 5ch (Hello! Project) thread: “[Sad News] Oda Sakura: ‘I was shocked the 18th generation doesn’t know SMAP’ — Akashiya Sanma: ‘Yeah, that figures, it’s been 10 years since they disbanded, so this kind of thing is only going to become more common’.”

As the discussion grew, more posts compared other members’ singing styles to things like "yakiniku" and "carbonated water," and the thread got lively debating how best to describe the appeal of each voice.

Ishiyama Sakura’s remark reportedly came up during the radio segment “MIX=Juice,” and the thread tied it to an episode of “Hello! Opinions split over how to describe Mifu’s voice compared to other members’ singing styles — fans were divided on whether "heavy yakiniku" or "carbonated water" was the better comparison, with noticeable differences in how people rated it. Note that the original thread also contained posts disparaging certain members’ appearances and abuse directed at the thread starter; this article excludes those posts and focuses solely on the exchange about singing voices.

  • First-Ever Red Super Chat Gets Ignored — Sparks Debate Over Whether Paying for Attention Is ‘Shameless’

A user’s account of sending a Super Chat to their favorite streamer, only to be completely ignored, touched off a debate on 5ch’s Newsspeed VIP board over whether red Super Chats (the top-tier, priciest donation color on YouTube) are shameless. One post dismissed the act of throwing money for “recognition” as pathetic, prompting a counterattack: “If craving recognition is shameless, then posting on this board is no different.” From there the thread spiraled into jabs comparing it to a hostess club, and pointed remarks that “the streamer is the one actually profiting here.” Neither side budged, and the argument never really went anywhere.

    18AnonymousSep 27, 2026 01:04
The moment you want your favorite streamer to notice you via Super Chat, that's already shameless if you ask me.

I said throwing money at someone just to get noticed is shameless.

Throwing a Super Chat or watching one is on the individual — deciding it makes someone else miserable is just your own delusion.

Background and Key Points of This Debate

Super Chat donations get a cut taken by YouTube before the rest goes to the streamer, and whether a message actually gets read out loud is entirely up to the streamer’s discretion — there’s no guarantee it’ll be treated the way the sender hopes. The thread split along one core fault line: is donating money inherently shameless because it’s driven by a craving for recognition, or is posting on a message board just as much an expression of that same craving, only a matter of degree? Both sides kept needling each other without ever finding common ground. Note that the specifics of the original incident — why the Super Chat was ignored, how much was donated, or how the streamer responded — aren’t included in the quoted material and remain unknown. Partway through this back-and-forth, the thread veered off into unrelated chatter, and this piece extracts only the core of the argument, leaving those tangents aside.

    Background and Talking Points

Nose hair is generally understood to physically filter out dust, pollen, and bacteria inhaled through the nose, and the thread was full of practical concerns along those lines — comments like “without it, dust and germs get a free pass in” and “PM2.5 would go straight to your lungs.” Meanwhile, how much or how thick someone’s body hair grows is largely attributed to genetics and hormone balance, though folk claims like “thick eyebrows mean thick pubic hair” have no scientific backing and remain pure anecdote. Okada herself has said in the past that her body hair runs thick, so this confession — that nose hair specifically never grew in — was framed as just one quirk of her particular body. On 5ch, a single confession about a physical trait tends to snowball into a debate about what that trait is even for, plus general chat about body hair overall, and this thread followed that familiar pattern.

  • Yasuko’s Kids’ Cafeteria Hands Out 180 Free Meals a Month — 5ch: “They Should Charge at Least 100 Yen”

Comedian Yasuko has revealed on social media the monthly operating costs of “Yasu Mattari,” the children’s cafeteria she runs in Katsushika Ward, Tokyo, reporting that she provided 180 meals free of charge. Yasuko announced the cafeteria’s opening back in July, saying it fulfilled “a dream I’d been talking about for two years,” and this latest report is a follow-up on that effort. On 5ch, opinions clashed between those arguing that recipients won’t develop a sense of self-reliance unless they pay something, and those praising the steady, grassroots work — the discussion also grew into a debate over the breakdown of the roughly 260,000 yen it cost to provide those 180 meals.

Yasuko reports children’s cafeteria’s monthly costs: “We managed to provide 180 meals for free!!”

On the 26th, both comedian Yasuko’s (26) social media and the official account for “Yasu Mattari,” the children’s cafeteria she opened in Katsushika Ward, Tokyo, were updated with the cafeteria’s monthly costs.

Whatever it is, they really should charge something, even just 100 yen.
Especially at a kids' cafeteria — it could double as a chance to teach kids to say "itadakimasu" and "gochisousama" (the customary phrases said before/after a meal).
Kids need to learn that you pay for what you get.
Getting everything handed to you for free just breeds a dependent, loser mentality.
Not just Yasuko — every kids' cafeteria nationwide should be charging at least 100 yen.

If you managed to get in with a church, you'd have to help out with chores and look after the kids, but you'd get at least one meal out of it. I wonder if they're overwhelmed now?

Background and key points of this discussion

Children’s cafeterias are often run by private groups, NPOs, or individuals, and in practice operators have to cover rent, utilities, and food costs largely on their own since public subsidies don’t stretch to cover everything. The figure Yasuko disclosed this time — roughly 260,000 yen for 180 meals — is likely the cafeteria’s overall operating cost, including store rent and utilities, not just food expenses. The thread split between those arguing that giving meals away for free might undermine recipients’ sense of self-reliance, and those who felt the sustained effort itself deserves credit — a tension that comes up with welfare-oriented efforts generally, not just children’s cafeterias. One easy misread is dividing the 260,000 yen total by 180 and treating that as the “cost per meal”: since the figure includes tenant rent and utilities, it has to be considered separately from food costs alone. Details on how she plans to keep funding this long-term, or how it stacks up against a pay-for-meals model, aren’t clear from the original announcement this article is based on.

Isn't this show basically just the host watching VTR clips most of the time?

Background and Key Points of This Topic

“Another Sky” is a show where Koji Imada has remained the sole male host throughout, while the female co-host role has turned over roughly once a year — and as the list of past hosts posted in the thread shows, the switch from Mayu Hotta follows that established pattern rather than being some abrupt dismissal. The split reaction mainly came down to two things: opinions on Imada’s hosting ability itself, and sarcastic remarks about the apparent pattern of casting female co-hosts with a certain look, often former models — with a fair number of posters also voicing doubts about Saito’s own conversational skills. Without knowing the show’s usual rotation cycle, this casting change can look sudden, but it’s worth keeping in mind that it’s really just part of the annual lineup refresh.

  • Japanese Women Who Went to Korea for Unification Church ‘Mass Weddings’ to File Compensation Claims

The National Network of Lawyers Against Spiritual Sales, which handles relief for former Unification Church (Family Federation for World Peace and Unification) victims, held a meeting on the 26th and revealed that at least around 10 Japanese women who traveled to South Korea for the group’s mass wedding ceremonies in the 1980s and ’90s are preparing to file compensation claims with the church’s liquidator, citing psychological distress. The mass weddings peaked from roughly 1988 to 1995, and an estimated 7,000 Japanese women believers are said to have gone to Korea to take part. On the thread, commenters debated why the male believers rarely come up in these stories, whether someone can seek damages while still remaining a believer, and the late former PM Shinzo Abe’s past ties to the church.

The National Network of Lawyers Against Spiritual Sales (Zenkoku Benren), which handles relief for victims of the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification (the former Unification Church), held a meeting on the 26th, revealing that some Japanese women who went to South Korea through the church’s mass weddings are preparing to file compensation claims with the church’s liquidator over psychological suffering. At least around 10 such people are said to exist.

According to Zenkoku Benren, the mass weddings peaked around 1988–95. An estimated 7,000 Japanese women believers are said to have gone to Korea after taking part in the ceremonies.

Many were matched by founder Sun Myung Moon with South Korean men they had never met, then married them. Many of those who have consulted Zenkoku Benren are reportedly living under harsh economic and psychological conditions.

Isn't the doctrine basically: Japanese people are descendants of the devil and Koreans are descendants of angels, so it's fine to exploit Japanese people however much you want; the world will be unified with Korea at its center; and Sun Myung Moon is the messiah? Sounds like a Christian cult built on exactly that.

So the husbands randomly assigned at these mass weddings are steeped in that ideology too — I doubt the women got treated well.

    Re: #194
That's exactly how much devotion the church demands of you. In other words: rack up good numbers on donations and recruiting new members — and this is the prize you get for it.

Background and Key Points of Debate

The former Unification Church was ordered dissolved by the Tokyo District Court in 2023, and liquidation proceedings for the group have been underway since. The mass weddings, called “Blessings” bestowed by founder Sun Myung Moon, have continued since the 1960s, and as the article notes, participant numbers surged around 1988-95. Worth noting: while at least around 10 people are reported to have consulted Zenkoku Benren, the figure of roughly 7,000 Japanese women who went to Korea is only an estimate. On the thread, opinions split over why male believers rarely come up in the discussion, and over how someone who still holds the faith could seek damages. On that point, according to the legal team, those preparing to file claims are mostly former believers who have already broken free of the brainwashing — continuing to believe and seeking damages aren’t legally contradictory. It’s also worth flagging, as background the article text alone doesn’t fully convey, that many second-generation believers were effectively forced into these marriages from childhood by the church’s doctrine.

  • Slime Season 4 Under Fire for Plot That’s Basically Overlord

A thread on 5ch’s Nanademo Jikkyo board kicked off after a poster pointed out that the plot of the anime That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime Season 4 bears a striking resemblance to Overlord. Commenters zeroed in on the lopsided power distribution — Rimuru has four Primordial Demons serving him, while his ally Guy Crimson only has two — as well as the recurring pattern in the light novels where the Great Sage bails out Rimuru’s officers whenever they’re cornered. Opinions were split on the series’ escalating power creep. Some also noted the anime has already overtaken the manga adaptation’s story progress.

And going forward, does an enemy stronger than all three of them actually show up?
    84AnonymousSep 27, 2026 01:18
    By the Empire arc,
there's an enemy so strong that even the three demon girls fighting together can't beat a single one of its clones — and that enemy is roughly on par with Veldora.
And that same enemy can't even land a scratch on Rimuru, gets completely shut out.
The power gap is already that big.
And it just keeps widening from here.

Since the enemies attack in a scattered fashion, you do get scenes of the officers struggling against the weaker enemy officers,
but personally it feels pretty lame that even if every enemy officer except the final boss showed up at once, they still couldn't put a single scratch on Rimuru.
It's like watching the weak ones just mess around with each other.

From Guy's perspective (his VA is Ishida Akira, hence the fan nickname) it's almost sad — you look away for one second and suddenly Rimuru's got four previously-unaffiliated Primordials plus the Storm Dragon at his side and has turned his nation into a full-blown magical superpower. Enough to make your head spin.

The power creep's gotten so bad it's almost funny — you forget why Guy was even making such a fuss about Rimuru back then.
The gap between Guy and the other Primordials is now so wide that even all of them (minus Diablo) attacking him together probably couldn't even slow him down.
The later wave of stronger enemies power-crept so hard that at this point none of the Primordials except Guy and Diablo even matter anymore.

Is Kawakami's Slime (the anime) going to branch off into its own continuity, like how Sadamoto's Evangelion manga diverged from the original?
    107AnonymousSep 27, 2026 01:38
    Re: #105
It's not so much the manga — the light novel is the original source.
The web novel and light novel versions differ quite a bit.
The manga is ultimately just an adaptation of the light novel.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Slime originated as a web novel on “Shousetsuka ni Narou,” and the story was heavily rewritten when it was published as light novels — Season 4 of the anime is following that light-novel version. Overlord is likewise a web-novel-turned-isekai series, but its protagonist is overwhelmingly powerful from the very start, which sets it apart in premise from Slime, where Rimuru grows in strength alongside his subordinates. The thread’s disagreement centered on whether the recurring pattern of the Great Sage bailing out cornered officers reads as “well-paced” or “lacking tension” — a divide that tends to fall along the line between anime-only viewers and those who’ve read the source material. As for the claim that the anime has overtaken the manga adaptation, that comes down to a difference in pacing between the original light novels and the manga, and it raises the possibility that the anime and manga could diverge in future story developments.

    What is this?
If you drink this stuff you'll live longer or something?
Maybe he should just chug it himself?

    Re: #15
Drink this and you're cured! Great, problem solved

    Re: #15
    That's cheap.
Wonder how much Kawamoto actually gets per bottle sold.
    17AnonymousSep 27, 2026 00:15
It's clearly established that even small amounts of alcohol and tobacco are bad for you, so blame the government for not banning them.

You can chain-smoke like an idiot and still not die from it, but with alcohol you can buy a lethal dose at the convenience store.
    21AnonymousSep 27, 2026 00:16
His body's completely wrecked at this point
being a comedian must come with brutal stress.

"If you can get it, might as well take it."

Guess now he's "gotten" himself a disease too, huh.
    28AnonymousSep 27, 2026 00:17
    > This time it's apparently three stress-related symptoms or something. They told him, 'You'd better lay off the alcohol too.'

Isn't 'it's stress' a ridiculously lazy diagnosis? Anyone can blame stress, you don't need to be a doctor for that.

The fact that he's saying 'pancreas or kidneys' honestly makes me think he wasn't paying much attention when it was explained to him.
    36AnonymousSep 27, 2026 00:20
Never see his partner anymore, what's he even up to lol
    37AnonymousSep 27, 2026 00:21
    Probably diverticulitis again.
I've got diverticula too, and I always feel rough around this time in early autumn.
    39AnonymousSep 27, 2026 00:22
Went and saw it today, funniest one yet.
Miyasako showing up was a shock though.
    40AnonymousSep 27, 2026 00:22
Sanma's storytelling makes zero sense once you transcribe it into text.
    57AnonymousSep 27, 2026 00:28
He's always got something wrong with him somewhere, it's starting to actually worry me.
Meanwhile Kajiwara's doing the same kind of thing and raking it in.

In Japan, whoever apologizes loses. Same with the penny-auction scandal — Komori apologized and got erased, while Kumada survived.
    69AnonymousSep 27, 2026 00:33
    Re: #67
Well, Komori's apology was a half-assed, kind of pissed-off one.

    Re: #69
Actually the reason he disappeared wasn't the penny-auction thing but Yaguchi's affair scandal.
Either way, only the ones who didn't just ignore it ended up getting piled on.
    81AnonymousSep 27, 2026 00:38
Wasn't he just caught dating some young woman recently? Guess even a washed-up comedian's still got game.
    88AnonymousSep 27, 2026 00:41
    Re: #81
Maybe he just pushed himself too hard trying to keep up with her, lol.
Once you're past 40 you're stuck living with a mentality that's still needlessly young trapped in an old man's body.

I remember seeing him post his blood test results on his blog a while back, and the numbers were textbook diabetes.
Fasting blood sugar around 180 or something.
I mean, his pancreas is shot, so of course.
    91AnonymousSep 27, 2026 00:43
    Re: #86
He's probably getting treated for diabetes too, right?
    106AnonymousSep 27, 2026 00:48
Wonder if he can even get welfare himself?

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Jun’ichi Kawamoto’s mother was found to have fraudulently received welfare benefits in 2012, an incident that forced him to temporarily suspend his activities at the time — and many of the replies in this thread brought that history back up. That said, what Sanma shared this time was only a guess at the diagnosis, not an official statement from Kawamoto or his agency. The very phrasing “pancreas or kidneys” suggests Sanma himself may not have the full details, so it would be premature to treat it as confirmed information. Rather than focusing on his actual condition, the thread tended to center on judgments of Kawamoto as a person shaped by the past scandal, with sympathetic voices and more distant, skeptical ones coexisting side by side.
