  • Over 3,000 Food Items to Get Pricier Starting in October — Beer Tax Cut, ‘¥1.06 Million Wall’ Abolished

Starting in October, prices on more than 3,000 food and beverage items will rise, while beer gets a tax cut and heated tobacco products get a tax hike as part of revisions to the liquor tax law. That same month, the social insurance “¥1.06 million wall” will also be abolished — a bundle of household-affecting changes all landing at once. On 5ch, opinions split between blaming the government’s economic policy for the price hikes and pointing to structural factors like wages and interest rates, with some suspecting opportunistic price gouging and others defending the increases as justified by soaring raw material costs.

    Kyodo News

Prices and systems closely tied to daily life will change starting in October. The wave of price hikes on food and beverages continues, with more than 3,000 items expected to rise in price, while heated tobacco products will be hit by a tax increase. As inflation keeps climbing, the burden on household budgets looks set to grow heavier. Meanwhile, beer will get a tax cut under the revised liquor tax law, and the expansion of social insurance coverage will abolish the “¥1.06 million wall.”

    Re: #1
If wages just went up, rising prices wouldn't be a problem at all.

The reason real wages aren't rising at companies serving Japan's domestic market is that more and more people now depend on social security (taxes) for their livelihood.

When you hand money to people like pensioners or welfare recipients who rely on social security and don't grow their income through economic activity, they try to stretch that money by buying the cheapest goods available.

Trading companies then chase that demand by importing cheaper substitutes from third countries, and the Japanese market fills up with cheaper goods.

Domestic-facing manufacturers respond to that demand by holding down employee wages instead of passing on the rising cost of imported raw materials.

For Japan to raise real wages, the only way is to cut pensions and welfare payments for people under 80 and get those who are healthy enough to work, but aren't, actually working.

On the timing and mechanism of liquor tax:

Domestic alcohol: taxed when it leaves the manufacturing site — a factory or brewery (at the point of shipment).
Imported alcohol: taxed when it's cleared out of a customs bonded area.

Who actually pays: the maker (manufacturer) or the importer — retailers and consumers don't pay the government directly.

    It's a tax on businesses.
    Wait a second…
Isn't that basically the same as the consumption tax, which is really just a sales tax wearing a fake name???

Coffee and chocolate are up at a level that's no joke.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

The beer tax cut marks the final stage of a three-phase revision to the liquor tax law that began in 2020 (unifying tax rates across beer-type beverages) — it isn’t a one-off favor from the current government. Since liquor tax is levied on manufacturers and importers rather than retailers or consumers, how much of that cut or hike actually gets passed on to shelf prices depends on each company’s own pricing strategy, as commenters in the thread pointed out. The abolition of the “¥1.06 million wall” is likewise based on pension system reforms passed in 2025 — a separate institutional change that simply happens to land in the same October as this wave of price hikes. Opinion in the thread split between those pinning the price hikes mainly on government and LDP policy and those pointing to structural factors like wages and interest rates, with voices suspecting opportunistic gouging coexisting alongside those defending the hikes as justified by soaring raw material and energy costs. The number of items and the tax mechanism follow the original source article as reported; it’s worth noting that the validity of any individual price increase hasn’t been rigorously verified here.

Suzuran Ise, leader of the Hello! Project group Angerme, updated her blog in tears on the night she wrapped up a concert in Ise City — a place that happens to share her surname. On 5ch’s Hello! Talk of a possible return to Ise next spring, teased during the show’s MC segment, also became a hot topic.

Background and Key Points of This Story

Suzuran Ise is the member serving as leader of the Hello! Project group Angerme. The episode that caught fans’ attention on the thread — the mayor of Ise personally buying merchandise with his own money — appears to have become a highlight of the regional show thanks to the coincidental link between the city’s name and her surname. At the same time, some posters pointed to an earlier blog post in which she wrote something to the effect of “it’s fine even if you don’t watch us,” questioning how that squares with her latest declaration that she’ll “cherish you forever.” It’s also worth noting that the talk of a return to Ise next spring, raised during the MC, isn’t a confirmed plan — she later explained she’d simply said it in the heat of the moment. Fan reactions are split between warm support and harsher criticism, showing that opinions on her conduct as leader are far from unanimous.

    Background and Key Points

This “quiz thread” is a long-running buzzer-quiz event on 5ch’s VIP board, with question formats and participation rules laid out on a dedicated wiki. This time, two question-setters took turns running a two-part event, “Mid-Autumn Open” and “Sprinters S,” with the latter featuring an elaborate scoring system in which points are calculated as 12 divided by finishing rank. The questions themselves ranged widely — from movie theme songs and NHK dramas to the history of the Japan Football Association and population shifts among local municipalities — turning the thread into more of a trivia showcase than mere time-killing. Worth noting: the claim that Koriyama City overtook Iwaki City in population is based on estimated figures as of August 2025, not a finalized census result. There was little disagreement over answers within the thread itself; the only real “discussion” was a comment about question difficulty (>>165).

  • Miss Seventeen 2026 Winners Announced: Four Chosen, Including a ‘Today’s Crush’ Alum

“Rakuten GirlsAward 2026 AUTUMN/WINTER” was held on September 26 at Makuhari Messe in Chiba, where the four winners of the “Miss Seventeen 2026” model audition were announced. Miss Seventeen is a long-running audition that has launched the careers of stars like Keiko Kitagawa, Suzu Hirose, and Ayami Nakajo, and this year’s four winners include an alum of the dating reality show “Today’s Crush” (Kyou Suki ni Narimashita). On 5ch forum threads, discussion focused less on the winners’ talent or looks and more on comments like “they all have the same hairstyle, I can’t tell them apart” and “guess I’m just getting old,” alongside chatter about how changes to Seventeen magazine’s publishing schedule affect the audition’s standing.

They pick new winners every year
so it's not that rare of an award
It's more of a stepping stone for rookies at major agencies.

    Background and Talking Points

Miss Seventeen is an audition launched by the long-running fashion magazine Seventeen, with a track record of producing actresses and models signed to major agencies, including Keiko Kitagawa and Suzu Hirose. This time the winners were announced at the large-scale event GirlsAward, and the fact that an alum of a dating reality show made the cut suggests the audition’s role is shifting — from a pipeline for print magazine models into more of a launching pad for talent who thrive on social media and video content, beyond the confines of the magazine itself. Where opinions on the thread diverged was over how to read the winners being “hard to tell apart”: some saw the matching hairstyles and similar facial types as a lack of individuality, while others chalked it up simply to their own generational distance from young pop culture. There were also comments arguing that the drop in Seventeen magazine’s publishing frequency has diminished the audition’s prestige, but it’s worth noting that how the winners’ careers actually play out depends on their future work, and there isn’t yet enough evidence at this point to judge them one way or the other.

  • Nishiyama Tomoka Takes Game 4 of the Hakuryō Title Match for Her 3rd Win — One Victory From Becoming Japan’s First Female “Kishi”

Game 4 of the 6th Hakuryō title match’s best-of-seven series was held in Kyoto on September 26th, with Hakuryō title holder Nishiyama Tomoka defeating challenger Fukuma Kana (holder of four women’s titles) in 125 moves, putting her ahead 3-1 in the series and just one win away from successfully defending her title. If Nishiyama defends, it will be her 5th Hakuryō championship overall, making her the first woman to qualify for “kishi” (full professional) status. Game 5 is scheduled for October 10th in Kanazawa. On the forum thread, opinions were divided over whether it’s fair to grant professional qualification based solely on women’s title results, and whether there’s any real “guarantee of playing strength” behind it.

    Sat, Sep 26, 7:07 PM

Game 4 of the best-of-seven 6th Hakuryō title match, a women’s shogi title series, was held on the 26th in Kyoto, where Hakuryō title holder Nishiyama Tomoka (31) defeated challenger Fukuma Kana (34), holder of four women’s titles, in 125 moves, taking a 3-1 series lead and moving one win away from defending her title.

If Nishiyama successfully defends, it will be her 5th Hakuryō championship overall, earning her the right to become the first woman to attain professional “kishi” status. Fukuma, the challenger, now has no more losses to spare. Game 5 will be held on October 10th in Kanazawa.

    Yeah, there is.
She just needs to get used to managing her clock in the ranking tournament and she'll be fine.

Like in today's game, Nishiyama plays in seconds once she sees a winning line, but in longer games she should probably use a bit more time.

    14AnonymousSep 26, 2026 19:32
Fukuma, who went winless in the pro qualification exam, is a no-go, but Nishiyama, who went 2-3, is fine. That's apparently the consensus among the pros.
    25AnonymousSep 26, 2026 19:44
    Re: #14
Going 14 wins and finishing as runner-up in the 3-dan league already showed she had more than enough playing strength.
    15AnonymousSep 26, 2026 19:33
Isn't it unfair if she doesn't have to give up her women's titles once she becomes a "kishi"?
But apparently she can keep holding women's titles even after turning pro.
    21AnonymousSep 26, 2026 19:38
I wonder how the guys in the 3-dan league (the pro qualification circuit) feel about this. The top pros probably don't mind, though.
    28AnonymousSep 26, 2026 19:46
    Re: #21
If she wins, the path opens up for her too — I bet the reasoning is there's no point worrying about it.
Even when people talk about "fairness," everyone knows the Association already does plenty of unfair things anyway.
    32AnonymousSep 26, 2026 19:49
Honestly, 5 Hakuryō titles is the kind of feat that, once Nishiyama gets it, probably won't happen again for another 20 years.
She's going to reign for a while too.
    52AnonymousSep 26, 2026 20:25
    Re: #32
    Exactly.
5 Hakuryō titles isn't something achieved easily.
Just count how few pros have managed 5 Meijin titles — looks easy until you actually check.
    34AnonymousSep 26, 2026 19:52
Once she becomes a "kishi," doesn't she lose her women's title eligibility?
Or… is holding both actually allowed?
    35AnonymousSep 26, 2026 19:52
    Re: #34
    It is allowed.
    60AnonymousSep 26, 2026 21:25
    Re: #34
If anything, the women's-event sponsors wouldn't allow her to be barred from holding both.
    37AnonymousSep 26, 2026 19:55
But it seems like Nishiyama is clearly a cut above in results against male pros, so why is it that in head-to-head women's matches she's just about even with Fukuma?
Is it simply a personal style matchup thing?
    46AnonymousSep 26, 2026 20:07
    Re: #37
They've played each other more than 100 times now, so they know each other's tactics inside out, which produces board positions you don't see anywhere else.

Fujii Sōta (allegedly): "But there's no real guarantee of strength, y'know~ ugh, what a headache~"
    41AnonymousSep 26, 2026 20:01
    Re: #1
"Guarantee of playing strength" ← that's a quote taken out of context.

    [What actually happened]
Fujii sat in his pre-assigned seat, second row from the front.
He was speaking based on the Shogi Association's stated mission of "spreading and developing shogi, and improving technical skill."
He was asking for confirmation about what could happen if this system were run long-term.
He said positive things, bringing up sponsors and the increase in the Hakuryō match's prize money.

    [What the article did]
Made it sound like Fujii chose to sit in the front row on his own initiative.
Made it sound like he's denying women pros' playing strength and opposing the system favoring women.
Made it sound like he's at odds with Habu, the chairman, and Association executives.
Made it sound like he doesn't understand sponsors or money and isn't thinking about the growth of the shogi world.

This is what became clear from information the pros themselves put out after the article came out.
    54AnonymousSep 26, 2026 20:33
    Re: #51
The way Re: #39 phrased it makes it sound like Fujii himself said this about Nishiyama's playing strength.
That's why I called it fake.
Also, like Re: #41 said, he didn't actually give an opinion.
Asking for confirmation and stating an opinion are two different things.
    42AnonymousSep 26, 2026 20:02

    Re: #42
    Re: #47
I was strongly against becoming a "kishi" based solely on women's results, but if she still has to clear the Free Class, that might just barely be acceptable.
    51AnonymousSep 26, 2026 20:21
    Re: #45
It's true he asked whether it could be guaranteed.
It's a world where playing strength and results equal the right to speak up, so Fujii is about the only one who can voice an opinion in front of Habu — someone had to be the one to say it.
Though calling it "Fujii's complaint" does seem like the tabloid's spin on it.
    61AnonymousSep 26, 2026 21:26
Um, so… what ever happened to that "guarantee of playing strength"?
    64AnonymousSep 26, 2026 21:29

    62AnonymousSep 26, 2026 21:28
Well, I guess this is an era where, since there's no mandatory retirement age, you get some really weak old-timers, and some weak guys where you wonder how they ever became pros in the first place, but still…
    66AnonymousSep 26, 2026 21:32
    Re: #62
Honestly, that's the part they should be cutting loose.

The old guys are just declining with age. What's the problem with that?
    74AnonymousSep 26, 2026 21:43

    78AnonymousSep 26, 2026 21:48
    Re: #74
Every single year some pro ends up with a "miserable result," though.
    79AnonymousSep 26, 2026 21:50
    Re: #74
Regardless of how Nishiyama performs as a pro, this system itself is bad.

Background and Key Points of Debate

One reason Nishiyama Tomoka has been running away with the series against Fukuma Kana is that the two have already played over 100 games in women’s title matches, resulting in a highly specialized style of play where each knows the other’s repertoire inside out. Because professional qualification here is granted based solely on results in women’s titles, doubts about a “guarantee of playing strength” remain persistent on the forum. That said, even after qualifying, a player still has to break out of the “Free Class” to compete in the official ranking tournament, which serves as a fresh test of ability. There’s also the matter of a tabloid report claiming Fujii Sōta voiced complaints about the system — some point out that this was actually a remark taken out of context from a Shogi Association meeting, where he simply asked for clarification on how the system would be run, creating a gap between the headline and what was actually said.

  • Hanshin’s Teruaki Sato on pace for Triple Crown with .315 average, 35 HR, 100 RBI — 5ch: ‘Clearly pathetic next to the greats’

A 5ch thread picked up on the fact that Hanshin Tigers slugger Teruaki Sato is on pace for the Central League Triple Crown with a .315 average, 35 home runs, and 100 RBIs. The thread’s original poster opened by arguing these numbers pale next to past Triple Crown winners, declaring Sato “looks set to become the worst Triple Crown winner in history” — touching off a mix of pushback and agreement. The debate centered on whether this season’s modest numbers stem from a league-wide pitching-dominant trend, or whether the league’s overall level has simply dropped as star hitters keep leaving for MLB, with comparisons stretching all the way to Nobuhiko Matsunaka, Hiromitsu Ochiai, Munetaka Murakami, and Kazuma Okamoto.

If other guys' numbers are low too, that means the whole league's in a pitching-dominant era right now.
Being the best of the bunch under those conditions still makes it a legit Triple Crown.

Assuming Sato keeps his current average, if he gets around 23 hits over the remaining 7 games, maybe…

Background and key points of the debate

A “Triple Crown” means leading the league in all three of batting average, home runs, and RBIs at once. The thread was sparked by the fact that Teruaki Sato’s numbers (.315 average, 35 home runs, 100 RBIs) look weak next to those of past Triple Crown winners, with names like Nobuhiko Matsunaka and Hiromitsu Ochiai brought up for comparison. The debate split into roughly two camps: one held that “the whole league is in a pitching-dominant season, so standing out under those conditions doesn’t diminish the achievement,” while the other argued that “the league’s level has simply dropped as star hitters keep leaving for MLB.” Posters also flagged the difficulty of comparing stats across eras, with some suggesting wRC+ as a fairer metric. Note that the home run/RBI comparisons with Munetaka Murakami and Kazuma Okamoto, along with the OPS and on-base percentage figures cited, are all snapshots tallied on the fly within the thread, reflecting mid-season numbers (as of September 26, 2026). The claim that an OBP under .400 would be unprecedented for a Triple Crown winner is likewise just thread speculation, not a confirmed record.

  • Best Nine by Defense Alone: 5ch Debates Whether Genda Could Cut It in MLB

A thread on 5ch heated up over a hypothetical: if you picked NPB’s all-time “Best Nine” based purely on defense, who makes the cut? It started with the observation that the Golden Glove Award tends to be swayed by batting stats, and while familiar names like Atsuya Furuta, Ryosuke Kikuchi, and Yoshio Yoshida were treated as locks, opinions split over whether active shortstop Sosuke Genda’s glove would actually hold up in MLB. Third base and center field also drew multiple candidates, and the thread never quite settled on a final lineup.

Right field: Haniuda — even when he drops a fly ball, his cannon arm gets it back in so fast everyone ends up blaming the catcher instead.

Background and Key Points of This Debate

The Golden Glove Award is chosen by votes from managers, coaches, and reporters, but in practice it tends to favor players with strong batting numbers — NPB has no official metric that directly measures range or throwing accuracy. So every name floated in the thread rests on individual memory or highlight-reel impressions rather than any statistical backing. As for the contested question of Sosuke Genda’s defense, MLB shortstops play deeper and need a stronger arm to cope with higher batted-ball speeds — a structural difference that’s easy to overlook if you take “his defense is great, so it would translate” at face value.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Halpro) thread “If NPB picked a Best Nine based on defense alone.”

  • 1 in 3 Women Have Faced ‘Unwanted Pregnancy’ Scares From Failed Contraception, Drugmaker Survey Finds

A survey by a pharmaceutical company has found that roughly one in three sexually experienced women have faced the possibility of an unwanted pregnancy due to contraceptive failure or not using contraception at all. The most common reason for failure was a condom breaking or slipping off, while the most common reasons for skipping contraception were assuming pregnancy was unlikely or a partner not wanting to use protection.

The survey was conducted by Alinamin Pharmaceutical, maker of the emergency contraceptive pill Resoel 72, which became available over the counter at pharmacies without a prescription this past February. On 5channel, the thread saw a clash between comments putting the onus of contraception on women and others pointing to the pill’s side effects and men’s lack of accountability, alongside more basic questions about just why condoms slip off in the first place.

A pharmaceutical company survey has found that roughly one in three women have experienced the possibility of an unwanted pregnancy due to failed or absent contraception.

The leading cause of failure was a condom breaking or slipping off, while the top reasons for skipping contraception were assuming pregnancy was unlikely and a partner not wanting to use protection.

Emergency contraceptive pills (morning-after pills) became available at pharmacies without a prescription starting in February 2026, with Resoel 72 being one of the two brands. The survey was conducted by Alinamin Pharmaceutical, which sells this drug, though the original article doesn’t specify the sample size or survey methodology in detail — worth keeping in mind while reading. The thread’s main point of disagreement was over who should bear responsibility for contraception: comments urging women to take the pill drew pushback for ignoring side effects and differences in how it suits different people. There was also a recurring misconception that the pill stops periods altogether, which several commenters corrected, noting it actually works by regulating the cycle. As for the specific cause of condoms breaking or slipping off — cited as the leading reason for contraceptive failure — the original article offers no explanation, and the thread never got past speculation either.

  • Farm-Raised Eel and Rice Farming Take Major Hit as Chiba, Kanagawa Death Toll Reaches 12

Heavy rain from Typhoon No. 25 breached a levee around Lake Inba in Chiba Prefecture, dealing severe damage to eel farms and rice paddies in the area. According to the Yomiuri Shimbun, a body believed to be that of a man in his 60s who had been reported missing was newly confirmed dead in Kamogawa City on the 25th, bringing the combined death toll for Chiba and Kanagawa prefectures to 12. On the thread, posters worked through misconceptions about how eel “farming” actually works, expressed sympathy for farmers being pushed out of the industry, and clashed with those calling for large-scale consolidation of agriculture.

Around Lake Inba in northern Chiba Prefecture, where heavy rain from Typhoon No. 25 breached a levee and caused widespread flooding, the aquaculture and rice-farming industries have taken a severe blow. Producers are confronting a grim situation with no clear path forward. On the 25th, one more person — a man believed to be in his 60s who had been unaccounted for in Kamogawa City, also in Chiba — was confirmed dead, bringing the death toll across Chiba and Kanagawa prefectures to 12. Why didn't they just convert the whole Lake Inba basin into an underground flood-control temple ages ago?
Sure the ecosystem changes and fishing there is finished, but that beats central Chiba going under.
Even if it costs something like 200 billion yen, on the scale of the Metropolitan Area Outer Underground Discharge Channel, the total disaster-prevention payoff would definitely be worth it.

    Re: #1
Japanese farms are small-scale and can only produce so little rice,
so the only way to stay in business is to pour in extra labor and cost to brand the produce and sell it at a premium.

Japanese agriculture ought to consolidate into large-scale operations, mass-produce with machines even if the output is a bit rough,
and stay afloat by selling cheap in bulk instead.

What agricultural policy should be doing is steering things toward consolidation so farm products get cheaper.
The farmland around Lake Inba should probably be redistributed among a smaller number of larger operators.

    Background and key debates

Lake Inba is a low-lying area that has undergone repeated land reclamation and flood-control work since the Edo period, and both rice farming and eel aquaculture are long-established local industries there. This time, heavy rain from Typhoon No. 25 breached a levee, submerging fish ponds and paddies across a wide area. The thread also surfaced confusion over what eel “farming” actually means — posters clarified that it isn’t fully closed-cycle breeding, but rather catching wild glass eels (juveniles) and raising them to market size. The main point of contention was between sympathy for farmers being forced out of the business and calls for consolidating and modernizing agriculture at scale, with pushback specifically around how paddies would need to be managed at that scale. Some posts mocking disaster victims and off-topic political flame wars also appeared in the thread but have been omitted here as unrelated to the core disaster reporting. The death toll across Chiba and Kanagawa prefectures has reached 12, with the damage now extending well beyond agriculture and fisheries into a serious human toll.

  • Even FF8 and MGS4 Make the List: 5ch Users Confess Their Favorite ‘Crap Games’ — ‘Air’s Adventure? Truly Just Hot Air’

A thread titled “Tell me your personal ‘crap games,’ yo” on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board drew a flood of responses. Posters named everything from famous titles like Saga Frontier 2, FF8, MGS4, and GTA5 to obscure ones like The Lion King and Air’s Adventure, each explaining why they gave up on the game. Some even named critically acclaimed titles like Elden Ring and Dark Souls III, highlighting just how much people’s standards for a “crap game” can differ.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The term “crap game” (kusoge) doesn’t always mean a genuinely poorly made game — it’s often used to describe a personal experience of “this just wasn’t for me,” shaped by a mismatch with expectations or how attached someone was to a title. In this thread, even highly acclaimed games like FF8, MGS4, Elden Ring, and Dark Souls III came up, showing just how much the line between “good” and “bad” depends on personal taste and memories. Comments about Killer7 and Vagrant Story repeatedly mentioned being “fooled by Famitsu,” highlighting the gap between the magazine reviews of the time and players’ actual impressions after playing. Some, like the poster who initially gave up on Donkey Kong 64 only to replay it later and change their mind, showed that a “crap game” verdict isn’t necessarily permanent.
