  • Ashio Copper Mine, Hokkaido University Floated as Next World Heritage Candidates — 5ch: ‘Hokudai Is Older Than Todai’

A thread on 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyo” (Live Sports/News) board asked which Japanese cultural properties and natural sites should be registered as World Heritage Sites next. The thread starter proposed candidates like the Ashio Copper Mine and Hokkaido University, and asked other posters to suggest one more. Some argued the Ashio Copper Mine — the site of Japan’s first major pollution disaster — should be registered as “negative heritage,” much like the Atomic Bomb Dome, while others pointed out that Hokkaido University is “Japan’s first modern institution of higher education, older than the University of Tokyo.” From there the discussion expanded to Ise Grand Shrine, Kamakura, Tokyo Station, Mt. Takao, and Mitsumine Shrine, with posters disagreeing over just what counts as “World Heritage-worthy.”

By the way, by prefecture, Iwate and Nara have the most (three World Heritage Sites each):
・Iwate: Hiraizumi, Hashino Iron Mining and Smelting Site, Gosho-no Site (Jomon)
    ・Nara: Horyu-ji, Ancient Nara, Asuka-Fujiwara

(Note: If Yahata and Miike get counted separately, Fukuoka would also have three — the other one being Munakata.)

    Kagoshima has three as well:
Yakushima (Natural Heritage) — registered 1993
Amami-Oshima, Tokunoshima, northern Okinawa Island, and Iriomote Island (Natural Heritage) — registered 2021
Sites of Japan's Meiji Industrial Revolution (Cultural Heritage) — registered 2015

・Ashio Copper Mine (Nikko City, Tochigi Prefecture; formerly Ashio Town, Kamitsuga District)

Because it was the site of Japan's first pollution disaster.
It should be registered as "negative heritage," like the Atomic Bomb Dome in Hiroshima.

・Lake Chuzenji (Nikko City, Tochigi Prefecture)

The Shrines and Temples of Nikko (Nikko Toshogu, Nikkosan Rinno-ji, etc.) are already registered as Cultural Heritage, so I'd like Lake Chuzenji registered as Natural Heritage too.
By the way, the lake originally had no fish at all, but it's now famous as a trout habitat.

Hokkaido University (formerly Sapporo Agricultural College)

Because it's Japan's first modern university.
It was actually founded before the University of Tokyo (Todai).

Its flagship faculties are Agriculture, Veterinary Medicine, and Fisheries Sciences (though Fisheries is based in Hakodate).
The Veterinary Medicine faculty in particular is said to be on par with Todai's Science II track, and harder to get into than some mediocre medical schools.

People sometimes say "Hokkaido University (Sapporo) is a branch campus of Tohoku University (Sendai)," but strictly speaking the school itself actually existed in Sapporo first — it just relocated its headquarters to Sendai.

By the way, Tohoku University is strong in the sciences (especially engineering), but not so strong in the humanities…
(In fact, Akita International University (AIU) is considered a higher level, so Tohoku University isn't even the top school in the Tohoku region.)

Also, the admission difficulty (hensachi) for the Faculty of Letters is actually higher at Hokkaido University — even though Hokudai has a reputation as the weakest of the old imperial universities.
(Though that's partly because Tohoku University requires math on its second-stage exam even for the Faculty of Letters, while Hokkaido University lets you compete using history/geography instead.)

    ・Nihombashi Mitsukoshi Main Store (MITSUKOSHI)

Because it was Asia's first full-fledged department store! Its contribution is huge.
The building itself is a work of art — a lion statue stands at the main entrance, and there's a massive sculpture in the central hall. It's not just a department store anymore, it's the "King of Department Stores."
By the way, the Mitsukoshi main store is also one of the few department stores designated an Important Cultural Property by the government! (The other is Nihombashi Takashimaya.)

To pass down to future generations the damage from the massive tsunami of the Great East Japan Earthquake (the 2011 Tohoku Earthquake), and the lesson of what happens when disaster response goes wrong.
It should be registered as negative heritage alongside Hiroshima's Atomic Bomb Dome.

It's the starting point for the Tokaido/Sanyo Shinkansen, Tohoku/Hokkaido Shinkansen, Joetsu Shinkansen, Hokuriku Shinkansen, Chuo Main Line, Sobu Rapid Line, Yokosuka Line, Keiyo Line, and more.

Well, it definitely draws way more tourists than Shirakami-Sanchi or Hiraizumi, and it's easy to reach too (thanks to the JR Chuo Rapid Line and the Keio Line).

(Though to be fair, you can also reach Hiraizumi by switching to the Tohoku Main Line from the Tohoku Shinkansen at Ichinoseki or Kitakami Station.)

    Background and Talking Points

A site only becomes a World Heritage Site after the government first places it on a “Tentative List” and it then clears UNESCO review — simply being named in a forum thread doesn’t make it an official candidate. The idea of preserving the Ashio Copper Mine, the origin point of Japan’s pollution problems, as “negative heritage” — and the push to keep ruins like Okawa Elementary School as a reminder of the lessons from the 2011 earthquake and tsunami — echo real, ongoing debates happening across Japan, with the Atomic Bomb Dome as a precedent. At the same time, while some posters championed the historical value of places like Hokkaido University and the Nihombashi Mitsukoshi main store, others were skeptical about Mitsumine Shrine, asking “what exactly about this is world-class heritage?” — and that gap in what counts as “World Heritage-worthy” is a big part of what fueled the discussion. The little-known fact that Hokkaido University predates the Imperial University of Tokyo also caught people’s attention as a surprising bit of history.

※This article is compiled and summarized from the 5ch (Nandemo Jikkyo) thread “[Top 4] Japanese Cultural Properties and Nature That Should Be the Next World Heritage Site: “Sanriku Coast,” “Ashio Copper Mine,” “Hokkaido University”.”

  • Daisuke Hori Claims Topping a Hensachi-45 High School Is Basically the Same as Ranking 200th at Elite Nada — Sparks Debate

A remark by Daisuke Hori — ‘being ranked 1st in a hensachi-45 high school class is about the same as ranking 200th in the grade at Nada High School’ — blew up on a 5ch thread. Nada has roughly 220 students per grade, and even those near the bottom sometimes get into Tokyo University or other elite schools, while at a hensachi-45-ish school even the #1 student can barely manage to get into any university at all — so posters split over whether the in-school rankings of the two schools can even be compared directly. Some posts backed up their points with actual screenshots of university placement results.

That type probably just doesn't share the whole 'study hard, get into a good company' value system in the first place

Background and Key Points of the Debate

Hensachi measures relative standing within the group that took the same mock exam, so the same score can represent very different absolute ability levels depending on how strong that group is overall. Because Nada Junior/Senior High School draws from Japan’s top academic tier right from the middle-school entrance exam, students who rank low within the school often still place well above average by other schools’ standards — and the thread split along that line, with some arguing ‘even Nada’s bottom ranks are Waseda/Keio level’ and others countering ‘there are still students at Nada who genuinely struggle with university entrance exams.’ By contrast, at a hensachi-45 school the exam-taking pool itself isn’t particularly strong, so even the #1 student in the grade sometimes ends up only reaching Nikko-Koma-tier universities — a point posters backed up with actual screenshots of admissions results. There’s no official data confirming Hori Daisuke’s original remark itself; this is all anecdote- and hearsay-based debate on 5ch, and it’s worth remembering that what’s said here about any individual school is only at the level of individual posters’ personal experience.

Japan's materials makers took over the semiconductor industry without ever raising their voice. They quietly push yields up to 90%. By the time you notice, you're already dependent on them. The High-NA EUV generation simply doesn't work without Japanese materials. Japan has an absolute grip on next-gen chip processes. Technological dominance isn't decided by papers — it's decided by optimizing equipment and materials.

In ultra-high-layer-count FC-BGA technology, Ibiden and Unimicron sit in the top tier — they're the only two companies that have reached 20-32 layers. Substrates for AI servers need a rising number of I/O connections to the IC, which means simultaneously pulling off large packages, more layers, finer wiring, and low warpage. Factor in package integration with Intel's EMIB-T, and Japan's Ibiden is sitting in a genuinely critical position.

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

Ibiden is a company based in Ogaki, Gifu Prefecture, that makes printed circuit boards and semiconductor packaging materials — the kind of manufacturer most ordinary consumers had never heard of. But with AI chip demand exploding, it’s grown into one of the few companies capable of producing ultra-high-layer FC-BGA substrates and advanced packaging materials, to the point where Nvidia arranged an advance payment just to secure supply. The thread split between two camps: one argued that “materials and parts makers are important but don’t make much money,” while the other countered that “even with low margins, they deserve credit for being a linchpin of the supply chain.” Voices criticizing the meager cut subcontractors receive clashed with those praising Japan’s technological edge. Comparisons with Taiwanese firms and the grip Japanese companies hold on EUV-generation photoresist technology also came up — useful points for understanding the structure of the semiconductor supply chain.

  • Asian Games Puyo Puyo Gold: Japan’s Esports Federation Plans No Prize Money for 11-Year-Old Champion Yuki Kurihara

In the esports Puyo Puyo event at the Asian Games, 11-year-old Yuki Kurihara of Tokyo Verdy won gold, becoming the youngest medalist in the history of the Games. At the Olympics, gold medalists receive a flat 5 million yen from the Japanese Olympic Committee, but the Asian Games have no unified prize-money system — it’s left up to each sport’s governing body. The track and field federation has announced it will pay gold medalists 1 million yen, but it’s expected that the esports federation will pay Kurihara nothing. On 5ch, alongside questions about the gap between federations, discussion also spilled into his age and the old “are games even a sport” debate, splitting opinion.

Yuki Kurihara (11, Tokyo Verdy), the youngest member of Japan’s delegation, won gold by beating Kang Dong-shin of South Korea 10–2 in the final of the puzzle battle game “Puyo Puyo.”

The previous record for youngest medalist at the Games belonged to Nimas of Indonesia, who was 12 when she won bronze in women’s street skateboarding at the 2018 Jakarta Games — Kurihara has now smashed that record.

At the Olympics, the Japanese Olympic Committee (JOC) pays a flat 5 million yen to gold medalists, but the Asian Games have no set prize-money system, leaving it up to each sport’s governing body. As one example, the Japan Association of Athletics Federations has announced it will award gold medalists 1 million yen (500,000 yen per runner for relays).

    The medalists
If this were Puyo Puyo, they'd all have been chain-cleared already

Background and Key Points of This Story

Unlike the Olympic model, where the Japanese Olympic Committee pays a flat 5 million yen for gold, Asian Games prize money has no unified system and is left to each sport’s governing body. The track and field federation has announced it will pay gold medalists 1 million yen, while the esports federation is reportedly planning to pay Kurihara nothing — and this “gap between federations” is the real core of the story. The thread tends to drift into his age or the tired “are games even a sport” debate, but what’s easy to miss is that the real issue isn’t age discrimination — it’s a matter of budget and policy design on the part of the body governing esports. Worth noting too: the previous youngest-medalist record belonged to skateboarder Nimas, who was 12 at the 2018 Jakarta Games — a record Kurihara has now broken.

Well, playing the support role has basically become the mandatory qualification for being a Precure boyfriend candidate these days.
Precure was originally an anime about girls and otherworldly beings teaming up to save the world,
but even so, the series' unwritten policy is: if a guy falls for a girl, he's not allowed to just stay powerless — if the girl he likes is a Precure, he'd better show some strength of his own.

    Background and Talking Points

The “Miracle Light” is a glow-stick-style item handed out to audiences at Precure cheering screenings and live events, and it’s been a staple of these events up to now. This time, word got out that there won’t be any giveaway, and the thread split over whether it’s simply a cost-cutting measure or a countermeasure against disruptive behavior. There’s also discussion of character popularity based on toy discounting, but readers should note this isn’t official data — it’s just speculation drawn from store inventory and social media post counts. The series’ tradition that a male support character must “prove his worth” to become a Precure’s boyfriend is a recurring point that’s been raised throughout past installments, and this thread’s discussion is an extension of that same debate.

  • Linear Shinkansen’s Shizuoka Section: 9 Years to Groundbreaking, Governor Change Finally Breaks the Deadlock

On September 25, 2026, it was reported that Shizuoka Governor Yasutomo Suzuki has approved the start of construction on the Shizuoka section of the Linear Chuo Shinkansen. The project, planned by JR Central at a total cost of roughly ¥11 trillion, had been stalled for about nine years over environmental concerns regarding its impact on the Oi River’s water supply. Former governor Heita Kawakatsu had continued to oppose the project until his resignation in 2024, and it was only under his successor that construction finally got the green light. On 5channel, threads buzzed with exasperation over the long delay, worries about ground subsidence from the tunneling work, and skepticism about whether the project is worth the cost.

    9/25/2026

Shizuoka Governor Yasutomo Suzuki has approved the start of construction on the Shizuoka section of the Linear Chuo Shinkansen.

The massive ¥11 trillion project has finally emerged from a nearly nine-year deadlock that began with environmental concerns.

    20AnonymousSep 25, 2026 22:07
It's not like you can dig underground just anywhere — water comes gushing out and it affects the surface, which is exactly why this got stuck.
There's no such thing as tunnel construction that doesn't affect groundwater.
    21AnonymousSep 25, 2026 22:49
Residents living above the tunnel in Kasugai and Shinagawa better brace themselves for their property values dropping.
A tunnel's being dug right under their houses.

The concrete plan to secure the Oi River's water flow — Shizuoka's biggest concern — wasn't finalized until 2023.
That's when Kawakatsu's job was basically done, and he resigned in 2024.

Shizuoka residents were never going to allow construction without a real plan for the Oi River.
It wasn't really about Kawakatsu personally — any governor would've faced the same situation.
    36AnonymousSep 26, 2026 08:35
Shaving off a few dozen minutes doesn't seem worth spending that much money.
If the fare stayed the same it'd be one thing, but if it ends up jacking up prices on the existing trains and shinkansen too, forget it.
    37AnonymousSep 26, 2026 10:35
If you think about it calmly, it's obvious there's zero cost-benefit here. Japan's population is shrinking to begin with.
Eventually it'll become unsustainable and just get shut down.

9 years just to break ground, sure, but
when you add it all up, it's really been 50 years now.
    After 50 years of investment,
is the Tokyo–Nagoya route actually going to turn a profit?

Background and Key Points of This Topic

The Linear Chuo Shinkansen is a national project that has been in the works since the 1970s, with JR Central funding and building it at its own expense. The Shizuoka section runs along a route that cuts through the Southern Alps, and Shizuoka Prefecture had long withheld approval for construction over concerns that tunneling would reduce the water flow of the Oi River. A concrete plan for water resource countermeasures was finalized in 2023, after which former governor Heita Kawakatsu, who had opposed the project, resigned in 2024; it was under his successor, Governor Yasutomo Suzuki, that this approval was finally reached. Opinions in the thread were split between skepticism over whether the line will ever actually open and concern for residents living directly above the tunnel route in Shinagawa and Kanagawa Prefecture. The original target opening date was 2027, but with the major delays in the Shizuoka section, a postponement now looks unavoidable — and it’s easy to misread this approval as settling a new opening date, which it does not.

  • Juice=Juice YouTube View-Count Ranking: 4 of the Top 10 Thumbnails Are Karin-chan

On 5ch’s Hello!Project board, a thread popped up about which Juice=Juice YouTube videos have racked up the most views. Thanks to the buzz around their recent hit “Moreme” (盛れミ), songs from five or even ten years ago have been getting bumped down the rankings one after another — and since 4 of the top 10 videos have Kirari Miyamoto (“Karin-chan”) as the thumbnail, some commenters declared “Karin-chan’s on top.” Meanwhile, tracks by Sayuki Takagi and Ruru Danbara also keep pulling in solid support, and some praised how members from every era are landing a balanced spread across the rankings.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Within Hello! Project, Juice=Juice members are grouped and referred to by “era” based on when they joined — the Kanazawa era, Miyazaki era, Uemura era, Danbara era, and so on. Karin Miyamoto, whose name came up in the thread, graduated from the group in 2020 and now works as a solo artist — she is not a current member. The skew pointed out in the thread — “4 of the top 10 have Karin-chan thumbnails” — reflects a phenomenon where a viral new song drives viewers back to catch up on older releases on YouTube, and doesn’t necessarily reflect the popularity of the songs themselves. The fact that new and longtime fans gravitate toward different members is also a sign of the group’s ongoing generational turnover.

  • Carp Reportedly Mulling Trades for Kozono and Yano — 5ch: ‘No Way Another Team Takes On Such Toxic Assets’

Following a drug-transfer scandal involving Hiroshima Toyo Carp players, reports have surfaced that the team may exclude Kaito Kozono and Masaya Yano from next season’s plans and ship them out via trade. Ryutaro Hazuki has already been released over the incident. Some observers believe other teams would want Kozono, last year’s batting champion and a former Samurai Japan national-team member, but many argue no team would take on Yano, who has been referred to prosecutors. On 5ch, opinion split between blaming the players individually and questioning the team’s oversight, with comments like ‘Why would anyone think another team would take on that risk?’ and ‘Don’t lump Yano and Kozono together.’

In July, “SmartFLASH” (the web edition of the weekly magazine “FLASH”) published a photo showing Kaito Kozono, Masaya Yano, and Shunsuke Tamura alongside a company executive who was arrested and indicted for allegedly transferring drugs to Hazuki. With fan trust eroding, the team may now exclude core players like Yano and Kozono from next season’s plans, setting up a turbulent offseason.

“Looking ahead to next year, Yano and Kozono might be needed in terms of raw talent, but their off-field conduct has damaged the team’s image so badly that I doubt fielding them on the top team would restore fan trust. I’d expect the team to focus on developing younger players while reinforcing the middle infield they used to cover, through the draft or trades,” said a sports-newspaper desk editor.

Given the coverage so far, it’s hard to picture a trade going through for Yano, who has been referred to prosecutors — but Kozono’s case is different. A former front-office chief at a Tokyo-based team noted, “If it came to a trade, I think some teams would take him on. He won the batting title last year and played for Samurai Japan in the WBC before this season started, so his ability is beyond question. That said, I do think he needs to hold a press conference to clear up any misunderstanding.”

Background and Key Points of This Topic

This report traces back to a case in which a company executive was arrested and indicted on suspicion of transferring drugs to player Ryutaro Hazuki; a weekly magazine published a photo in July showing Kozono, Yano, and Tamura in connection with that case. Yano has been referred to prosecutors, but Kozono himself is not suspected of the drug transfer itself — the main factor appears to be the image damage from simply appearing in the photo. As one thread comment put it, ‘Don’t lump Yano and Kozono together,’ reflecting how differently the two are actually implicated. It’s also easy to overlook that a ‘trade-out’ is still only at the team’s planning stage in these reports — a trade requires the other team’s agreement and isn’t something the Carp can decide unilaterally. Many commenters called for the team to be held accountable for its oversight, but as of this writing, no disciplinary action or preventive measures from the club have been announced.

  • No ‘Right Answer’ for Men’s Cologne: 5ch Says ‘Most Recommendations Just Stink’

On 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyo G” (Anything-Goes Live-Commentary) board, a thread asking what cologne men should actually wear kicked off. Even when posters named colognes considered mainstream classics, replies kept shooting them down with “most of those stink.” The discussion started from the basic question of whether men should even wear cologne at all. As it rolled on, it spread beyond scent preferences into body-odor countermeasures, clashes with fabric-softener smells, and nostalgic talk about brands that were huge back in the day — but in the end, nobody landed on a definitive “this is the answer.”

    89AnonymousSep 26, 2026 17:08
    Re: #86
    You mean eau de toilette

Background and key points of this discussion

The claim floated in the thread that “Japanese people have weak body odor” is partly true, but the number of sweat glands varies a lot between individuals, and in Japan’s humid climate, bacteria-driven odor can develop on pretty much anyone. Cheap perfumes tend to smell “cheap” because they lean more heavily on lower-cost synthetic fragrance compounds instead of natural essential oils, which makes the scent’s layering and longevity feel flat instead of multidimensional. Also, as one poster noted, “eau de cologne” and “eau de toilette” refer to the same type of product but with different fragrance concentrations — the higher the concentration, the longer the scent lasts, though too much makes it easy to tip into “overdoing it.” Go-to brands also vary sharply by generation. The reason no single “correct answer” for men’s cologne exists seems to come down to this tangle of concentration, ingredients, and individual body chemistry.

  • Ex-Amagami Inter’s Seiko: ‘I Want a Job That Feels Like an Adventure,’ She Posts on X

Seiko (37), formerly of the comedy duo Amagami Inter, updated her X (formerly Twitter) account on September 26, 2026, posting lines like “I want to work a lot” and “I want work that feels like an adventure” to pitch herself for jobs — and the post became a hot topic on 5ch’s “Entertainment/Sports News+” board. Since she never specified what kind of work she actually wants, reactions on the board split right down the middle: some cheered her on with comments like “Hope she does her best,” while others fired back with harsher takes like “She has no idea how tough work really is.”

    September 26, 2026, 11:15 AM

Seiko (37), formerly of the comedy duo Amagami Inter, updated her X account with an appeal along the lines of “I want work.”

Seiko opened with “I want to work a lot,” writing: “I want to work a lot — to make my dreams come true, to do the live shows I want to do. I want work that feels like an adventure…”

Background and Key Points of This Story

It’s become increasingly common in recent years for celebrities to appeal directly for work through their own social media rather than going through their talent agency, and posts that don’t spell out exactly what kind of work is wanted tend to spread widely while also leaving plenty of room for interpretation. In this case too, the post itself gives no clear sense of what “work like an adventure” actually means, and that ambiguity is exactly what splits the board between sympathetic and critical reactions. The sympathetic comments tend to draw on her personality and her image from her “underwear gag” days, while the harsher ones stem from the general industry view that “work isn’t handed to you — you have to go out and get it.” It’s worth noting that the current professional status of Seiko and her former partner, as well as the specific circumstances that led to the post, cannot be confirmed from the thread’s comments alone.
