  • Nadal Slams Hikari Ota’s Old-School References: “That’s Harassment!”

Before a recording of “JUNK Bakusho Mondai’s Car Boy,” Hikari Ota was chatting excitedly with staff about ABC Radio’s “Dokkiri! Hakkiri! It’s Koji Miyozawa” when Nadal of Coro Coro Chiki Chiki Peppers, who happened to be there, pushed back: “That kind of thing counts as harassment, you know.” Later in the show, when Ota brought up “Jujutsu Kaisen” to Nadal, he got the reply, “I get the anime, but the manga’s hard to follow” — leading to a moment where the two just couldn’t connect. On 5ch, posts piled up debating the generational knowledge gap, ranging from criticism of “Showa-era uncles” who use Dragon Ball as their go-to reference, to surprise that younger people don’t even know “Dokaben.”

Hikari Ota and Yuji Tanaka, the comedy duo Bakusho Mondai, appeared on the late-night broadcast of “JUNK Bakusho Mondai’s Car Boy” (TBS Radio) on the 22nd. When they ran into Nadal of Coro Coro Chiki Chiki Peppers backstage, an argument reportedly broke out over bringing up old shows and manga to someone from a different generation.

Ota ran into Nadal in the green room before the recording. Ota and the show’s makeup artist got onto the topic of Koji Miyozawa, familiar from ABC Radio’s “Dokkiri! Hakkiri! It’s Koji Miyozawa,” and got excited asking things like, “Do you know Koji Miyozawa?”

Nadal then suddenly cut in: “Ota-san, that kind of thing counts as harassment, you know. You should be more careful.”

On the radio they actually did get into Jujutsu Kaisen properly —

Ota: "So Jujutsu Kaisen is fine, then?"
Nadal: "Jujutsu Kaisen is hard, man!"
Ota: "What do you mean, hard?"
Nadal: "I get it as an anime, but I can't follow the manga!"
Ota: "What does that even mean?"
Nadal: "I'm just saying the manga is hard!"

Are Japanese people just getting more immature overall? When I was a kid, if I saw some old guy comparing everything to Dragon Ball I'd have just found it cringe.

    Background and Points of Debate

“Dokaben” is a baseball manga by Shinji Mizushima (with a judo arc within the story) that ran until 2018. The debate split into two camps: whether it’s harassment to measure young people against old manga references, and whether it’s simply laziness on the part of those who won’t make an effort to learn. What doesn’t come across from the main text alone is that Nadal himself admitted about “Jujutsu Kaisen,” “I get the anime but the manga is hard,” so he isn’t one-sidedly criticizing only young people. Note that some posts reacting against Ota being called out for harassment veered into political jabs and personal insults; those have been excluded from this article.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Geinou/Sports News+) thread “Nadal warns Hikari Ota: “Bringing up old manga to young people, like ‘Do you not know Dragon Ball,’ that’s harassment” / “What the heck is Dokaben! Nobody knows that!”“

  • Comedian Yasuko Reveals She Moved to Chiba and Adopted 9 Rescue Cats — 5ch Reacts: ‘Turned Out to Be No Big Deal’

On the 26th, comedian Yasuko revealed on X that she had “actually moved to Chiba and taken in nine rescue cats.” The day before, Fuji TV’s “Sakagami’s Animal Kingdom SP” had aired a segment about her plan to buy a defunct kindergarten in Chiba Prefecture and turn it into a facility called “Animal Happy Land,” where animals could live out their remaining years. On 5ch, some worried whether she could really care for nine cats on her own and questioned how strict the screening process for rescue-cat adoption is supposed to be — but as details of the broadcast got shared, it became clear this wasn’t a personal whim but part of the facility project, and the discussion settled down.

    September 26, 2026, 11:43 AM

On the 26th, Yasuko (28) revealed on X, “Actually, I moved to Chiba and have been keeping nine rescue cats! So, with that said—” confirming she had moved to Chiba in order to take care of rescue cats.

She then introduced the cats: “Cat intros!! Cat #1: Happy. Named Happy because watching him makes you happy. Age unknown. Male (…) his previous owner could no longer keep him, so he ended up at a rescue-cat facility.” She tagged the post “#RescueCats #YasukoAndTheNine.”

Re: #85 Ah, so right now she's just keeping multiple cats at home. Well, if she gets a not-yet-famous comedian buddy to pet-sit for pay, that's manageable enough — she's got the money for it.

Background and key points of this story

This wasn’t some spur-of-the-moment confession — it’s tied to Fuji TV’s “Sakagami’s Animal Kingdom SP,” which aired on the 25th. Yasuko has been moving forward with a plan to buy a defunct kindergarten in Chiba Prefecture and turn it into “Animal Happy Land,” a facility where animals can live out their remaining years, and the broadcast showed a briefing session held for local residents. The thread’s opinions split before and after this context came through. Early on, the discussion centered on doubts like “Can she really care for nine cats while living alone?” and “Isn’t rescue-cat screening supposed to be strict?” But once posts explaining the broadcast’s content appeared, it became clear the facility isn’t operating yet — she’s currently keeping the nine cats at the home she moved into, with fellow comedians helping out with care while she’s at work. Rescue-cat adoption screenings are said to weigh financial means, living environment, and whether there’s enough help available to care for the animals, and her status as a celebrity appears to have worked in her favor there. Read on its own, the headline might make it look like she impulsively started keeping nine cats on a whim — but in fact there’s a backstory tied to the facility plan, which is the part that’s easy to misunderstand.

    Background and Talking Points

Alongside his acting career, Tsurutarō Kataoka has long been devoted to painting and calligraphy, and is known for selling his own works — including racehorse paintings — on his website. What made this story newsworthy is that the man who painted him, Knights’ Nobuyuki Tsuchiya, has himself been an art university student since this past April. The “Nihon University College of Art isn’t a real art school” jab that circulated in the thread traces back to a well-known bit in the comedy world: Bakushou Mondai’s Hikari Ota has long refused to count his alma mater, Nihon University’s College of Art, as a proper art school, drawing a line between it and dedicated fine-arts universities like Tokyo University of the Arts or Musashino Art University. The original article never actually specifies which category the university Tsuchiya attends falls into, which is an easy point for readers to get confused on. As for the painting’s technique itself, commenters weren’t universally glowing — some pointed out issues with compositional balance and a lack of fine detail.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Geisports Sokuho+) thread “Current Art Student Knights’ Tsuchiya’s Oil Portrait of Tsurutarō Kataoka Draws a Storm of Praise — ‘The Intensity Is Incredible!’, ‘It Radiates Power’.”

  • NVIDIA CEO Says ‘Kids Don’t Need Math’ — 5ch Fires Back: ‘You Can’t Even Prompt AI Without Knowing the Concepts’

A post spreading on X (formerly Twitter) claims that NVIDIA’s CEO said children won’t need to study math in the AI era, since scholarly work and research will be handled by AI instead — and it became a hot topic on a thread in 5ch’s “Nanademo Jikkyo G” (a live-commentary discussion board). The thread saw a head-on clash between posters arguing “you still need to grasp math concepts to give AI instructions” and those countering that “thinking of AI as just a tool is the outdated view.” The discussion eventually broadened into questions about what academic credentials are even worth, and which jobs will survive once AI is everywhere.

NVIDIA’s CEO has flatly declared: “In the AI era, children don’t need to learn ‘math.’”

Background and key points of this topic

This remark spread as a summarized quote from an X account, so the full original statement and the context in which it was made can’t be confirmed as of this thread. NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang has made similar remarks before, such as saying children don’t need to learn programming, and this looks like an extension of his recurring argument that AI will take over routine learning and skills. Meanwhile, the thread’s counterargument — that giving AI precise instructions still requires basic knowledge — echoes a point often raised in discussions of generative-AI education: that even the people writing prompts need domain expertise. The fact that the discussion expanded into questions about academic credentials and “which jobs will survive” likely reflects underlying anxiety about how AI’s spread is reshaping views on education and work.

On September 24, Google announced it will launch its first test satellite next week as part of a plan to eventually run AI data centers in space. The goal is to confirm whether its in-house AI chips function normally in space, where orbit is said to allow solar power generation up to 8 times that possible on the ground. On 5ch’s science news board, users debated physical challenges like chip degradation from cosmic rays and the impossibility of heat dissipation and maintenance, versus arguments that it makes sense given power shortages and land constraints on Earth — and the discussion eventually broadened into criticism of how Japan approaches technological development.

Google unveils plan for a data center in space, to launch first test satellite — capable of 8x the solar power generation possible on the ground

There's been talk since about this time last year that the ground-side local distributed data centers for this space data center setup would become not Starlink ground stations but ground-level edge data centers.

It's not just companies — apartment buildings would become part of it too,
with a solar-power-style arrangement where unused capacity gets bought up.

On that note, Nvidia announced a partnership last year too, for an in-home wall-mounted data center system that includes the GPU.
There was a startup selling wall-embedded units for homes — I think it was founded as part of a smart home business.

I didn't research any of this while writing it, so look up the facts yourself.

The US just keeps experimenting away.

Cost is still an issue though.
    27AnonymousSep 26, 2026 13:53
This was already being discussed back in April, half a year ago already
and it comes with a concrete explanation of who did what and how that logic follows.

In Japan, it's just generic info with no logic about who said what and when — the media just tosses around this-and-that information.
    28AnonymousSep 26, 2026 13:57
The way Japan puts out information is:
"the government/a company can do this amazing thing"
    "wow, impressive"

Since it's about their own turf, all they do is brag.
There's no logically improving things as a society,
    no logically refuting things either.

It just turns into a good/bad evaluation.
Since it's an evaluation, it's always a conclusion,
and then outsiders get worked up arguing whether it's usable or not.
    29AnonymousSep 26, 2026 13:59
There's no shared understanding of the underlying issue behind the goal — just one-time evaluations.

Whoever puts out the information has no continuity.
It's just like political elections —
a snap good/bad judgment in the moment,
    then everyone forgets about it.

    32AnonymousSep 26, 2026 14:36
A lot of people keep going on about maintenance, but do you even need it?
You just disconnect any broken TPU from the system, and since the satellites are
designed to run as a big cluster anyway, a few failures just mean
a bit less compute — no real problem.

On top of that, apparently a lot of ground server failures happen because
humans are wandering around nearby (accidentally snagging a cable, that sort of thing),
so a fully unmanned satellite might actually break down less than you'd expect.

    39AnonymousSep 26, 2026 16:06
    Jormungand… (the world-serpent from Norse myth — also a manga/anime title)

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Behind this plan lies the fact that ground-based data centers are running up against the limits of power and cooling capacity. In space, solar power can be generated stably around the clock, but as a flip side, the vacuum prevents heat dissipation through convection, and cosmic rays combined with extreme temperature swings make chips prone to degradation. This is exactly where opinions in the thread split: some argued that if maintenance isn’t possible, a disposable approach — just disconnecting broken blocks — is fine, while others pointed out that if it can generate 8 times the solar power of the ground, it should also degrade 8 times as fast. Looking only at the headline’s “8x the solar power of the ground” makes it easy to see this as a simple advantage, but it’s worth keeping in mind that the article itself doesn’t mention the flip-side costs of faster degradation and heat dissipation. There was also a mention that SpaceX is likewise investing in satellite data centers, so this should be read not as Google’s idea alone, but as a trend multiple companies are pursuing in parallel.

On September 26, kabuki actor Ichikawa Danjuro (48) announced on the official website that he would skip his appearances at the release-event stage greetings for his starring film “Shumei” (Succession) at Namba Parks Cinema in Osaka and Midland Square Cinema in Nagoya, citing poor health. Both events went ahead as scheduled, with his eldest son Ichikawa Shinnosuke (13) stepping in, and no ticket refunds are being issued. On 5ch, users questioned the sudden turn given that father and son had looked perfectly fine together on the talk show “Hirobide” just the day before, sparking theories ranging from exhaustion from hopping between TV appearances to the observation that many past Danjuros have died young — all part of a wider debate over what’s really behind his illness.

On the 26th, the official site for Ichikawa Danjuro’s (48) starring film “Shumei” (Succession, directed by Takashi Miike) announced that Danjuro would not be taking the stage at that day’s release-commemoration greetings scheduled at Namba Parks Cinema in Osaka and Midland Square Cinema in Nagoya, due to poor health. The statement read: “To everyone who was looking forward to Ichikawa Danjuro’s appearance, we sincerely apologize for this last-minute notice, and for any worry or inconvenience it may cause.”

It went on: “The stage greetings themselves will proceed as scheduled, with Ichikawa Shinnosuke taking the stage,” confirming that his eldest son Shinnosuke (13) would appear in his place. It added: “Please note that we will not be offering ticket refunds due to this change in appearing cast. We ask for your understanding, and hope that everyone looking forward to attending will continue to enjoy the film ‘Shumei’ (Succession). Thank you very much for your understanding.”

Every time a Danjuro article like this comes out and that assailant's name gets brought up here again, he's probably more annoyed by the people posting here than by Danjuro himself — and jealous of him too, I bet.

Wasn't 'Hakuen' tacked onto the end of his name?
    80AnonymousSep 26, 2026 16:16
He's probably sulking because his son's getting all the attention.

Background and key points of this topic

Ichikawa Danjuro is a kabuki actor who took on the 13th-generation Danjuro name in 2022, and “Shinnosuke” is the name traditionally used by this family’s heir before inheriting the Danjuro title. Notably, the eldest son who filled in this time appeared under that very same name — meaning this wasn’t just a simple stand-in, but part of the succession of the family’s stage name. The official announcement did not disclose the specific nature of his illness, so it’s worth noting that both the COVID theory and the “too busy” theory floating around the thread are pure speculation. Separately, the “Kanto Rengo” comment in the thread refers to a past incident from 2010, when Danjuro was injured in a dispute with an acquaintance and was later criticized after skipping a related press conference citing poor health, only for it to emerge that he had actually been at a bar — a different, older episode from this one. The claim that many past Danjuros died young is indeed a documented historical fact, but whether it has any bearing on his current illness is purely speculative. The main driver of the speculation seems to be the jarring timeline: he appeared looking perfectly healthy on a talk show one day, then an absence was announced the very next.

  • Nishimura Itsuki & Doi Fuuka Team Up Again on Livestream — 5ch: “They’re Fun to Watch Because They Can Both Actually Sing”

Tsubaki Factory’s Nishimura Itsuki (nicknamed “King”) announced on X that she’ll hold another singing livestream with Doi Fuuka, this time doing a different song than before. The two have streamed a singing collab before, and fans have taken to calling the pairing “Fuukin.” On the 5ch thread, comments welcomed the duo’s chemistry, while others called for members like Lesser and Murata to get similar spots, and some pointed out how unevenly singing opportunities get handed out at concerts — sparking a broader debate about allocation within the group.

    Background and Talking Points

Nicknames like “King,” “Doikin,” and “Fuukin” are informal terms Hello! Project fans use for fun to describe a member’s standing or particular pairings within the group — they aren’t official designations. The “ranking” talk and the “Kasai vs. Doi/Nishimura” framing that came up in the thread are likewise just fans’ imaginative readings of the situation, not any indication of the group’s actual management policy — an easy point to misunderstand. Meanwhile, the criticism of “bundling them as a set” and the calls to feature other members like Lesser and Murata reflect a concern specific to group idols: how singing parts get divided up among a limited number of livestreams and concert slots. It’s less about excluding any particular member and more a “we want to see more of them too” kind of support.

  • Juice=Juice Forms a Baseball Team — 5ch Weighs In: ‘Closer Matsunaga Ria’

On 5ch’s “Morning Musume.” board (the Hello! Project board), a post went up imagining members of the idol group Juice=Juice as baseball players and assembling a batting order for them. The original proposal opened with Kawashima Mifuu batting leadoff at first base, Arisawa Ichika second at catcher, and Inoue Reon third as pitcher — and the thread quickly filled with debate over whether those fielding assignments made sense, plus comparisons to real NPB players like Yoshio Itoi and Kotaro Kiyomiya. Eventually multiple users started pitching their own lineup versions, and the thread turned into a running game of guessing positions from the members’ builds and personalities, on the assumption that nobody involved knew much about baseball to begin with.

    Background and Talking Points

This kind of “cast idols as baseball players” thread is a running gag on the Hello! Project board — pure speculation about fielding positions and hitting styles based on members’ physiques and personalities, nothing more. In this thread, the original poster appeared to have limited knowledge of actual baseball positioning, and most of the pushback centered on the choice to bat a first baseman leadoff — a spot usually reserved for fast, smaller players. The comparisons to real NPB players like Yoshio Itoi and Kotaro Kiyomiya are also a standard feature of these threads and may read as random references to anyone unfamiliar with Japanese pro baseball. The lineup gets reworked repeatedly throughout the thread simply because there’s no single “correct” answer being sought — it’s a free-for-all where each poster remixes the order to their own taste, not a debate with a winner or an official conclusion, something that isn’t obvious from the posts alone.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Hello! Project board) thread “We tried building a baseball team out of Juice=Juice members (with batting order).”

  • Sony Semiconductor Orders 8,000 Employees Back to the Office — 5ch: “Jealous of the Private Rooms”

It has emerged that Sony Semiconductor Solutions, the semiconductor subsidiary of Sony Group, will switch roughly 8,000 employees to in-office work in principle starting in October. The company judged that face-to-face collaboration between employees across multiple departments is more effective for creating new businesses, and new perks are being prepared for returning employees, including “private one-person rooms” and lunch subsidies. On 5ch, opinions were split: some envied the private rooms and meal subsidies, while others coolly dismissed the reasoning behind the return-to-office push as “vibes-based,” and some suggested it was really about catching people slacking off while working from home.

The trend of Japanese companies swinging back from remote work to office work is intensifying. Starting in October, Sony Group’s semiconductor subsidiary will bring employees back to the office in principle.

Don't temp and contract workers get a lunch subsidy or anything? We work harder than the precious full-time employees but get paid less and pay more for food — what's up with that?

    Re: #168
Take that up with your staffing agency. (Or just get hired directly by Sony's semiconductor subsidiary.)

Background and Key Points of This Topic

“In-office in principle” is easy to misread — it doesn’t ban remote work outright but mainly means restoring in-office work as the default, not scrapping remote work altogether. It was also pointed out in the thread that the 8,000 employees in question refer only to the semiconductor subsidiary Sony Semiconductor Solutions, not Sony Group as a whole (which has over 100,000 employees on a non-consolidated basis alone). Major Japanese and overseas IT and electronics companies, including Google and Microsoft, have reportedly been swinging back from remote work since 2023, and this move is positioned as part of that broader trend. Opinions in the thread split over whether to view the company’s stated reasoning — that face-to-face collaboration improves efficiency — as merely “vibes-based,” or to support the move on practical grounds like preventing slacking off and easing commute burdens.

Yeah, yeah, I see exactly what's going on here

Dunno if it's her real name or a stage name, but imagine having a name like that
    10AnonymousSep 26, 2026 14:57
Had no idea who she was, so I looked her up — turns out she's huge and working steadily in Taiwan

She was cute when she joined, huh

Well, as far as novelty acts go, that's basically the ideal life lol ("iromono" = a gimmick/oddball entertainer, not a mainstream idol)
    14AnonymousSep 26, 2026 14:58
If she takes her husband's surname, does that mean she's no longer 'Ave Maria'?

At 30, a shotgun marriage (getting married because she's already pregnant) is honestly about the best outcome
    17AnonymousSep 26, 2026 14:59
I know 'Abe Mario' (a pun mashing up former PM Shinzo Abe and Mario), but never heard of this person
    19AnonymousSep 26, 2026 15:00
First time hearing of her, even with such a memorable name for an AKB member
    20AnonymousSep 26, 2026 15:00
Sounds like a manga character's name
    Ave Maria
    22AnonymousSep 26, 2026 15:01
At this point she should just give birth in a manger
    That's what I'd do

And it'd be even funnier if she caught flak from every direction for it

What's with this 'her partner is an ordinary person' line

You're an ordinary person too, buddy

For what it's worth, she's from the AKB general-election boom era — she's an actual working talent
    32AnonymousSep 26, 2026 15:04
That name almost sounds blasphemous to Christianity
    36AnonymousSep 26, 2026 15:06

Don't tell me it's real?? lol lol

    Former AKB member
Apparently there've been like 1,400 of them total

    I was a fan for a while and even I couldn't name 100

Wasn't there an old-school actress with a similar name too?

Is 'Virgin Emperor' basically short for 'Emperor of Virgins'?
    45AnonymousSep 26, 2026 15:14
If you followed AKB during the boom years, you'd know her name — she was that kind of member
Not like today's obscure underground idols, she's in the same tier as Mayuyu (Mayu Watanabe) or Yuko Oshima
    50AnonymousSep 26, 2026 15:19
If she's got a big build, she doesn't tend to be popular with the otaku crowd
    52AnonymousSep 26, 2026 15:20
So both her and the guy are just ordinary people, right?
Feels like this didn't even need to be news

    'Ave Maria' —
sounds just like the Virgin Mary's name

Maria Abe, from that same era, was still young back when she was in the group

    85AnonymousSep 26, 2026 15:58
Is she gonna insist it's an immaculate conception?
    87AnonymousSep 26, 2026 16:04
Isn't 'Ave Maria' in the hymn just 'Hail Mary,' not like 'Maria Avenue'?

    Background and Talking Points

Maria Abe was a member of AKB48 during the height of the group’s general-election frenzy, and the thread showed a split between users who instantly recognized her name and those who had no idea who she was — a reflection of just how uneven the “peak AKB48” experience was depending on a fan’s generation and level of devotion. The main draw of the thread was the coincidence that her name, Maria Abe, echoes the hymn “Ave Maria,” which set off a wave of puns and “immaculate conception” jokes; it’s worth noting these were wordplay riffing on the name itself rather than attacks on her looks or character. Meanwhile, comments questioning “why report this if her partner is just an ordinary person” reflect a broader, recurring gripe with how celebrity marriage news habitually describes the non-famous partner as “a civilian” — a phrasing this kind of story draws criticism for again and again.
