  • Sprinters Stakes: 9th Favorite Puro Magic Wins Wire-to-Wire — 5ch: ‘¥100 Bet Turned Into ¥2,400’

On September 27, the Sprinters Stakes (G1) at Nakayama Racecourse was won wire-to-wire by 9th-favorite Puro Magic. Jockey Nozomi Iwata picked up his second career G1 win aboard the horse. The upset victory over the top favorites sparked a wave of surprised reactions on 5ch — comments like “Autumn’s first G1 already turned into chaos” and “I bet ¥100 and it came back ¥2,400” — while others focused on the race itself, questioning the riding through the race, the use of the whip before the start, and the severity of the penalty points for interference.

The Sprinters Stakes, contested by five G1-winning horses vying for the title of fastest sprinter, was won by Puro Magic.

Puro Magic is by sire Asia Express, out of dam Mejeruda.

▼About the Sprinters Stakes: Established in 1967 as the only graded stakes race for 4-year-olds (now categorized as 3-year-olds) and up run over 1,200m on turf. It was upgraded to G1 status in 1990 and became an international race in 1994. After becoming a G1, it was initially held at Nakayama in late December, before being moved to the final week of Nakayama’s autumn meet in 2000.

Watching it on TV, with that sharp crack of the whip, I figured Panja Tower was done for.

Then again, JRA's been doing that sort of thing forever.

Watching overseas broadcasts, they have two people use a strap against the horse's hindquarters to guide it into the gate —
makes me wonder why JRA doesn't just use that instead.

    Background and Key Points

The Sprinters Stakes is a historic G1 turf sprint over 1,200m established in 1967, upgraded to G1 status in 1990, and made an international race in 1994. This time, 9th-favorite Puro Magic held off the top picks to win wire-to-wire, sparking both amazement over the size of the payouts and questions about the race itself on 5ch. Opinions were especially split over the whip use before the start and the riding through the race, with some comparing JRA’s traditional methods to the gate-loading techniques used overseas. There were also comments raising concerns about the severity of the penalty points for interference — a point based on information JRA itself has made public. At the same time, several commenters noted that Puro Magic’s recent form actually hadn’t been bad, suggesting it wasn’t simply a “surprise long shot” but a horse whose merits were genuinely debated — a nuance that doesn’t fully come through in the article text alone.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Geinou/Sports Breaking News+) thread “[Horse Racing] Sprinters Stakes (Nakayama, G1): 9th-favorite Puro Magic wins wire-to-wire! Jockey Nozomi Iwata’s second career G1 win.”

  • Do OGs Only Get Stage Work? 5ch Compares Post-Graduation Careers from Hello! Project, Sakamichi, and AKB

A thread on 5ch caught fire over the idea that female idols — not just from Hello! Project, but AKB48, Nogizaka46, and others — tend to see their post-graduation work skew heavily toward stage productions. One spark for the discussion: Suzuki Airi’s casting in Otsuka Pharmaceutical’s “Benza Block Blue” commercial, a slot that has historically gone to talent from Amuse, Nogizaka46, and Keyakizaka46, making the pick of a Hello! Project alum feel like a real departure. Posters also pointed to her role in the film “Sakuya Yareta Kamo” (“I Could’ve Killed Him Last Night”), opening October 23, and to how much screen work Stardust Promotion talent tends to land, framing the debate around how differences in each agency’s “sales pitch” power shape careers after graduation.

Thing is, with musicals you've got a shot at decent productions even stuck at a crap agency, but with straight plays (non-musical theater) you're basically limited to no-name ensemble casts or guest spots with tiny troupes.

    Re: #94
Nakamura Reno, who went from the understudy ranks to getting picked for Koichi's "Endless SHOCK," — you could say that wasn't just riding on popularity

Background and key points of the discussion

The “Benza Block Blue” commercial is a flagship campaign for Otsuka Pharmaceutical, and the role has historically gone to talent from major agencies — Amuse, Nogizaka46, Keyakizaka46. The thread rates the fact that Hello! Project’s Suzuki Airi broke into that lineup as a “big deal.” The real throughline of the thread, though, is the structural point that idols’ post-graduation work skews toward stage productions (musicals and straight plays): posters split between noting that Sakamichi groups are strong on Imperial Theater-caliber stages but haven’t yet produced a standout screen lead, versus Stardust Promotion, where talent like Tamai Shiori can land film work even while still active. No one in the thread pushed back on the underlying premise that stage work is a “lesser fallback,” and the fact that stage work itself is a stable line of employment went unmentioned — worth keeping in mind as a reader.

  • Manager Moriyasu Denies Rift Between Doan and Shiogai, Makes Unusual Request to Press

On the 27th, at the press conference held the day before the match against Venezuela, Japan national team manager Hajime Moriyasu criticized a report by some media outlets claiming that Ritsu Doan and Kento Shiogai had a heated clash during individual training at the World Cup, saying “the players themselves are getting hurt by this,” and made an unusual request to the assembled press. The report was reportedly based not on the source’s own eyewitness account but on secondhand information. Opinions on the forum thread split into two camps: those who felt the more the manager denies it, the more it seems true, and those who saw it as a legitimate request to stop reporting built on flimsy hearsay. Views also differed over just how much influence the reporter behind the story really has.

Japan national team manager Hajime Moriyasu attended the pre-match press conference on the 27th ahead of the Venezuela match (28th, at E Peace [stadium]). At the end of the conference, Moriyasu opened with, “I have one request,” and denied a report from some media outlets that hinted at a rift between Ritsu Doan and Kento Shiogai.

“I know you all have freedom of the press, but there’s a report from a certain outlet singling out these players, and it’s ending up hurting the players themselves. I really wish you’d stop publishing things that hurt the players,” the manager said. He continued, “It’s been reported that during individual training at the World Cup, Doan and Shiogai got heated, with Doan supposedly saying something pretty harsh to Shiogai. I’d like you to verify that, but the report was published as secondhand information — the source didn’t witness it themselves, they heard it from someone else. When we train, there are times players do clash with each other. In those moments there’s constructive back-and-forth, but neither side has ever intimidated the other or used abusive language,” he explained, laying out his request.

He also noted that in this case, it wasn’t the players who raised the issue — the request to the press was made at Manager Moriyasu’s own discretion. The manager said, “There’s a lack of respect for the players,” and asked for more consideration going forward.

    63AnonymousSep 27, 2026 17:33
So it probably did actually happen, then.
Doan said something like "players who won't drop their ego should just disappear" during the World Cup too — I don't think he clicks with Shiogai.
I don't think he gets along with Kaoru Nakamura either.
Doan's stopped being able to perform himself, so he probably just can't stand players who outshine him.

    Matsuki, probably.
Shiogai did score his first goal, but before that he blew two good chances with selfish, hero-ball plays.
That's beyond the kind of ego a forward is allowed to have — that's just plain selfishness.
He scored, sure, but my opinion of Shiogai actually went down after this match.

There's no way it's that clean and easygoing.
These are pros — a bunch of people with sky-high pride.

Background and Key Points of This Story

This incident began with reports from some media outlets, built on secondhand information, claiming that Ritsu Doan and Kento Shiogai clashed during individual training at a national team camp after the World Cup. As Manager Moriyasu himself explained, “the source didn’t witness it directly — it was something they heard from someone else,” meaning the report wasn’t based on a direct eyewitness account. Opinions on the thread split mainly along two lines: one debate pitted those who saw the manager’s public denial as, if anything, proof it really happened against those who viewed it as a legitimate request to stop reports built on flimsy hearsay; the other was a disagreement over just how much influence the reporter or outlet behind the story actually carries. One point readers could easily misread is that this request didn’t come from Doan or Shiogai themselves — it was the manager’s own call — so it should be read separately from the players’ own wishes. Some commenters also drew comparisons to past, similar reports, like the rumored rift between Keisuke Honda and Shunsuke Nakamura on the national team, though those are cited only as rumors that were never confirmed.

Can't you tell from a regular blood test?

Background and Key Points of This Story

Kawamoto has a history with controversy dating back to 2012, when it came to light that his mother was receiving welfare benefits despite his own income, drawing heavy public criticism. However, this is a commonly misunderstood point: it was a social debate over support obligations and how the welfare system is administered, not a case where “fraudulent receipt” of benefits was ever legally established. This latest announcement only mentions “pancreas trouble” without specifying whether it’s pancreatitis or pancreatic cancer, though many posts in the thread brought up the severity of pancreatic cancer regardless. Since drinking is considered one of the main causes of pancreatitis, and it was widely known that he had a past hospitalization for it, this hiatus announcement drew both calls for him to quit drinking for good and simple expressions of concern for his health.

  • 11-Year-Old Puyo Puyo Champion Yuki Kurihara: Mom’s ‘No-Limits Parenting’ Sparks Debate

At the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games esports event “Puyo Puyo,” 11-year-old Yuki Kurihara became the youngest gold medalist in the tournament’s history. Beyond his dominant performance crushing his South Korean opponent in the final, attention also turned to his mother’s parenting philosophy, shared in an interview: “I don’t put limits on what he wants to do.” Reactions on 5ch ranged from praise to skepticism about generalizing her parenting approach, practical worries about whether he could actually make a living from gaming, and joking jabs about his future — sparking a mixed, divided discussion.

The esports “Puyo Puyo” event at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games was held on the 26th, where Yuki Kurihara (11, Tokyo Verdy), known as “Yuki,” won gold as the youngest champion in tournament history. Behind this achievement lay a mother’s love — one that puts her child’s happiness first.

In the final, Kurihara defeated South Korea’s Kang Dong-sin 10–2 to become the youngest-ever champion in Asia. His genius in mowing down grown adult competitors, combined with his overwhelming youth, had the whole country buzzing.

He kept a poker face throughout the competition, barely changing expression except for the moment victory was confirmed. His mother, “Yuki’s Mom” (a pseudonym), who spoke to reporters before the tournament, revealed a side of him that treats Puyo Puyo almost like a spiritual pursuit: “Even when he’s won domestic titles, he tends to stay pretty quiet about it. I think he sees it as just another step on the path he’s been mastering.”

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Esports was first adopted as an official medal event at the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou, and it remains a medal event at the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Games as well. This gold medal marks the youngest-ever winner within that framework. Where opinions split on the thread was over how to interpret the mother’s comment about “not placing limits.” Alongside the praise, many pointed out that this only works because he’s a self-motivated kid who puts in effort on his own — it’s not a parenting method that would work for just anyone. It’s also easy to miss that the original article mentions Kurihara is preparing for middle school entrance exams, meaning this isn’t a case of unchecked gaming taking priority, but rather something balanced alongside his schoolwork.

A thread that began with the post “When you’re in a depressive state, any hope for the future disappears, and your days off end with nothing more than a trip to the supermarket or convenience store” caught fire on 5ch. Responses split over how to gauge the severity of the symptoms, with some arguing “real depression means you can’t even manage to go shopping” and others countering “you go shopping because you’ll die if you don’t.” The discussion branched into other flashpoints too — “would getting 100 million yen cure it?” and “is depression really that easy to get diagnosed with?” — as people who’d been through it traded experiences.

Once you're in a depressive state, that "hope for the future" disappears completely. Everything you do gets dominated by a feeling of "it's such a hassle," and you end up constantly worrying about money and your health.
Your personality darkens too — you get irritated by little things, sink into gloom, and keep blaming yourself over and over. Even on your days off, you think, "wherever I go I'll just get tired, so right now I just want to save money," and end up staying home all the time, which only makes things worse.

There are people who end up in that kind of confused, catatonic state. Some stop drinking water entirely, get rushed to the hospital with dehydration, and are admitted on the spot — bedridden with an antidepressant drip running nonstop.

    Re: #74
It's not that common to get diagnosed with an anxiety disorder when your symptoms are actually depression.
Sure, there's depression with a strong anxiety component, but that's not usually the main issue there.

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

International diagnostic criteria generally define depression as symptoms like depressed mood or loss of interest and pleasure persisting for most of the day, nearly every day, for at least two weeks — so the point raised in comment #49 is broadly accurate. That said, severity varies widely: cases range from the kind described in comment #32, where dehydration leads to emergency hospitalization and IV treatment, all the way to milder cases where the person can still manage to go shopping. Much of the thread’s disagreement over what counts as “real depression” comes down to this gap in severity. It’s also worth noting that “new-type depression” isn’t an official medical term — it’s more commonly used as slang for cases where symptoms only flare up around work, which likely explains some of the skepticism toward it. As for how easily depression gets diagnosed, in practice people are often first treated for insomnia or anxiety disorders before eventually being diagnosed with depression, so it isn’t necessarily as instant a process as some suggest.

  • Is Toyota’s High-School Track (Technical High Schools) Really a Winning Ticket? 5ch: ‘I’d Rather Do Desk Work at a Second-Tier Company’

Landing a factory job at Toyota Motor straight out of a technical high school has long been seen as a “winning move,” but a 5ch thread went viral by pointing out that in reality, brutal sports-team-style hierarchies and grueling shift-work labor drive plenty of people to quit. The thread saw a mix of opinions on career choices: warnings that joining just for the pay can backfire into regret, the reality that “the more elite the company, the more academic pedigree decides your job assignment,” and tips on routes like transferring to university via a kosen (technical college). Some also voiced anxiety about the future — “once your body gives out, it’s over” — sparking a debate over whether that’s actually worse than desk work at a lesser company.

    1AnonymousSep 27, 2026 14:34
People often say "going from a technical high school straight into Toyota is a bigger win than graduating from some mediocre university," but that's not necessarily true.
Sure, the pay itself is quite good for a high school grad, which is exactly why it's such a popular choice at technical high schools (especially in Aichi Prefecture).
But in reality it comes with a brutal sports-team-style hierarchy, plus it's tough physical labor on a shift schedule — so a surprising number of people end up quitting.
    2AnonymousSep 27, 2026 14:34
The reality of Toyota's high-school-hire track (factory work) is tougher than it looks — a surprising number of people quit for reasons like "I'd rather do desk work even at a second-tier (or third-tier) company" or "I want to escape the physical labor and brutal hierarchy."

If you join just because the pay looks good on the surface, you might end up regretting it… 😢

There's even a theory that in the long run, desk work at a second-tier (or third-tier) company beats this, even if it looks less impressive on paper.
    4AnonymousSep 27, 2026 14:34
    Re: #2
No joke, elite companies divide job duties strictly by academic background.
Desk work and knowledge work basically only goes to four-year university grads (or at best kosen/junior college grads) — if you're a high school grad, it's almost all shop-floor work.
Granted, since it's an elite company, the pay itself isn't bad even for high school grads, but a surprising number of people quit because they can't handle the brutal physical labor and sports-team-style hierarchy… 😢
"Going from technical high school to Toyota" might look like a win short-term, but over the long haul it's not necessarily so (your stamina only goes downhill from here).
There are even companies that flat-out only hire people who were in sports clubs.
If anything, second-tier companies tend to care less about academic pedigree and will let even high school grads do knowledge work or desk jobs.
Though the pay at second-tier companies isn't great.

    Re: #7
That's exactly why, even in manufacturing-heavy Tokai (Aichi, Shizuoka, Mie), the kids who know the reality of technical high schools — or the genuinely bright ones — go to regular college-prep high schools instead.
People say "Aichi (the Nagoya metro area) is strong for technical high schools," but even among teens there, the academic-pedigree mindset runs strong, just not quite as strong as in greater Tokyo.
If anything, technical high schools are more popular in less affluent regions with lower university enrollment, like Tohoku or Kyushu — sometimes even more competitive to get into than a mediocre regular high school.
*That said, Tohoku and Kyushu don't have many big factories locally, so a lot of kids end up taking jobs in greater Tokyo or Kansai instead. And yes, you can land a job outside your home region even coming from a technical high school.

Out in the countryside, kosen grads are in huge demand, and the kosen-to-former-Imperial-university route is also realistically on the table.
Well, Tokyo University and Kyoto University are obviously way too hard, but the regional "Imperial"-tier universities have local admission quotas, so you can get in if you put in the work.

There's actually a long-shot route: go to Toyota Technological Institute and get treated as a university grad. You keep your company seat while becoming a student — the company covers your admission fee and tuition, and you still get paid. Though side jobs/starting a business are banned, you can't go on to grad school, and the entrance exam is brutal given typical technical-high-school academic levels.

The moment your body can't keep up, you've basically already lost.

In the long run, there's even an argument that desk work at a second-tier company beats this.

Background and key points of this discussion

Manufacturing jobs straight out of technical high school remain deeply popular, especially in the Tokai region around Aichi Prefecture, and it’s not unusual for starting pay and benefits to outstrip those of university graduates. That said, at many companies job placement and promotion are clearly divided along academic-pedigree lines, and the path from shop-floor work to desk work is said to be limited. The thread’s disagreement centered on how to weigh good pay against the physical and interpersonal toll it demands — some argued “it’s a win short-term, but desk work at a second-tier company is better long-term,” while others countered “even so, it’s an exceptional deal for someone with only a high school diploma.” Worth noting: these posts aren’t a systematic investigation into any specific company’s internals — they’re personal anecdotes and hearsay from an anonymous message board, and shouldn’t be read as reflecting official statistics on turnover rates or compensation.

*This article is compiled from excerpts and a summary of the 5ch (Nanndemo Jikkyo G board) thread “[Sad News] Toyota Motor’s high-school-hire (technical high school) track looked like a winning ticket — turned out to be a regular hellscape…”

  • PS3: “It’s Expensive. It’s Huge. It’s a Nightmare to Develop For, and Multiplatform Games Look Worse on It.” — Why This Console Was Such a Massive Failure

A thread on 5ch’s hardware/industry (“geha”) board revisited the question of why the PS3 is remembered as such a massive failure. Released in 2006, the console drew early criticism for its high price, bulky size, and the notoriously difficult-to-develop-for Cell processor — and multiplatform titles became infamous for “degradation,” with the PS3 version often suffering worse frame drops and lower visual quality than versions on other systems. In the thread, some argued the fatal blow was Sony cutting PS2 backward compatibility early on, while others drew comparisons to the PS4, PS5, and even Nintendo’s Switch 2. Opinions were also split on how to judge the console’s eventual worldwide sales total of roughly 87 million units.

When my wife and I were furnishing our place after getting married, TV was still king, so instead of buying a separate recorder to save money, we just got a PS3 and Torne.
Back then there wasn't really a way to show everyone photos from a digital camera through the PC, so we'd use the PS3 to view vacation photos on the living room TV.
I'd rip CDs on the PC and play the music through the TV via the PS3, and watch videos I'd downloaded on the PC on the living room TV through it too.
When I ended up hospitalized, I had someone copy TV recordings onto my PSP so I could watch them there.
It wasn't really about the games — I used it more like a household appliance.

unlike the PS3, which had backward compatibility via an actual PS2 chip built in, the Switch 2's compatibility works by tricking the system (not the best way to put it) into thinking Switch games are Switch 2 games — so cutting that feature wouldn't actually save any cost

    PS3 (87 million units) ← "massive failure" 🐷

Nintendo has released home consoles 7 times, and only the Wii ever outsold it (1 win, 6 losses)

Even counting handhelds, only the Game Boy, DS, and Switch have beaten that number 😂

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

At its 2006 launch, the PS3 was criticized for being priced higher than rival consoles, for its large casing, and for the notoriously difficult-to-program “Cell” processor — and multiplatform titles were repeatedly called out for “degradation,” with PS3 versions often suffering more frame drops and lower visual quality than their counterparts on other systems. Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) posted major losses around this period, and cut PS2 backward compatibility relatively early after launch. At the same time, the console’s worldwide cumulative sales eventually reached roughly 87 million units, so it’s not simply a case of the hardware failing to sell. Where the thread split was over whether the core of the failure lay in “price and development difficulty” or in “cutting PS2 compatibility,” with the discussion weaving in comparisons to successor consoles and rival hardware.

※This article is compiled as an excerpt and summary of the 5ch (Hardware/Industry (“geha”)) thread “It’s Expensive. It’s Huge. It’s a Nightmare to Develop For, and Multiplatform Games Look Worse on It. — Why This Console Was Such a Massive Failure“.

  • GEO’s Used ‘Neo-Retro’ Games Are Outselling Regular Stores 5-to-1

GEO Holdings’ new used-digital-goods store format, ‘GEO Digital Base,’ launched in March, is reportedly seeing strong sales of ‘neo-retro’ games from the early 2000s. Game software sales have hit five times the level of regular GEO stores, driven by support from customers in their 30s and 40s, and the store network is expanding. The thread ranged from confusion over the term ‘neo-retro’ itself, to debates over what actually counts as a retro game, the reasons behind soaring used-game prices, and frustration with modern titles that rely on DLC and updates.

GEO Holdings' new store format focused on used digital goods, 'GEO Digital Base,' launched in March, is off to a strong start. Games are leading the charge, with particularly intense demand for 'neo-retro' titles from the early 2000s. Game software sales are running five times higher than at regular GEO stores. Backed by strong support from customers in their 30s and 40s, the company is expanding its store network.

'Digital game' is just synonymous with 'computer/video game.'
A 'digital game console' just means a video game console.
'Analog games,' meanwhile, means actual physical board games and card games.

They also offer repairs and consultations (for PlayStation consoles especially, a lot of people don't know which model number is good or bad), which probably makes it easier for casual nostalgia buyers — not just hardcore collectors — to pick up retro consoles.

Feels like they're holding onto stock that could genuinely become an asset if managed well.
No idea whether that offsets all the totally worthless stuff they're also stuck holding, though, enough to turn a profit.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

In the used game market in recent years, a decline in circulating supply combined with an outflow to overseas buyers has driven up prices for certain titles. As noted in the thread, this trend wasn’t foreseen around 2021, when stores ran ‘clearance sales for non-current-gen software,’ and many of those titles saw prices climb afterward. Also, starting around the PS2/original Xbox generation, more titles began relying on online updates and DLC, raising the question of whether a game can be fully enjoyed with just the package alone — a practical issue that’s becoming increasingly relevant to game preservation going forward. Meanwhile, the term ‘neo-retro’ itself is closer to GEO’s own branding, and the thread shows disagreement over its definition and generational cutoffs — it’s easy to mistake it for an established industry-wide term when it isn’t.

  • That ‘70% Off Switch 2 Games’ Ad? It’s Just Temu — 5ch: ‘No Way I’m Sticking That Cartridge In My Switch’

A thread titled “Switch 2 software clearance sale — 70% off” popped up on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board. What was actually circulating was an ad from the Chinese shopping platform Temu, with conditions attached: the offer was limited to new app users, capped at one item per purchase, and required meeting a minimum order amount. The ad itself even carried a disclaimer stating “This promotion is not affiliated with NINTENDO,” making clear it wasn’t an official Nintendo sale. While some posters voiced distrust with comments like “There’s no way I’m putting that cartridge in my console,” others pointed out the irony that the same people who’d previously mocked a PS5 “free for 0 yen” ad were now complaining about a Temu ad built on the exact same setup — and the thread devolved into console-camp bickering.

Great pun, but I'd be pissed if it happened to me lol

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Cross-border e-commerce platforms like Temu, Shein, and AliExpress frequently run “first-time-only, one-item-only” bargain ads to hook new users. This 70%-off offer is a textbook example, and the ad’s own fine print makes clear it isn’t an official sale involving Nintendo or Sony. What became the real point of contention in the thread wasn’t so much the ad’s credibility, but the fact that the same posters who’d previously mocked a PS5 “0 yen” ad seemed to be reacting far more harshly to a Switch 2 ad built on the exact same premise. Once console rivalry gets mixed in, arguments tend to shift away from what the ad actually says and toward “whose side is getting the better deal” or “whose side is more gullible.” Some posters also claimed that AliExpress’s recent crackdown on shady sellers has pushed more of them over to Temu, but that’s just anecdotal chatter from the thread — no supporting data was presented.
