Do OGs Only Get Stage Work? 5ch Compares Post-Graduation Careers from Hello! Project, Sakamichi, and AKB

From our other sites

The story

A thread on 5ch caught fire over the idea that female idols — not just from Hello! Project, but AKB48, Nogizaka46, and others — tend to see their post-graduation work skew heavily toward stage productions. One spark for the discussion: Suzuki Airi’s casting in Otsuka Pharmaceutical’s “Benza Block Blue” commercial, a slot that has historically gone to talent from Amuse, Nogizaka46, and Keyakizaka46, making the pick of a Hello! Project alum feel like a real departure. Posters also pointed to her role in the film “Sakuya Yareta Kamo” (“I Could’ve Killed Him Last Night”), opening October 23, and to how much screen work Stardust Promotion talent tends to land, framing the debate around how differences in each agency’s “sales pitch” power shape careers after graduation.

Is it really unavoidable that female idols — Hello! Project, sure, but also AKB48, Nogizaka46, Stardust talent, whatever agency — end up doing mostly stage work after graduating?

Re: #9
Airi's on a whole different level even within Hello! Project — Hashimoto Kanna tier

Thing is, with musicals you've got a shot at decent productions even stuck at a crap agency, but with straight plays (non-musical theater) you're basically limited to no-name ensemble casts or guest spots with tiny troupes.

Re: #16
Every major theater troupe has gotten cozy with the big agencies at this point
28AnonymousSep 27, 2026 16:26
If you want film and TV work, transferring to Stardust actually gives you a shot.
Case in point, Momoiro Clover Z's Tamai is currently in the "Bayside Shakedown" movie.
With Stardust you can land film roles while still active.

Re: #28
Is it really that good though?
Even Hayami Akari, who's gorgeous and went full-time actress, only got this far.
Her career high being a ramen commercial, come on…
29AnonymousSep 27, 2026 16:27
If you can get into Cube or Mitani's agency, you get a shot at good stage plays and TV/film work, but transferring there isn't easy.
33AnonymousSep 27, 2026 16:29
Re: #29
Nogizaka46's Inoue Sayuri moved to Mitani's agency but it hasn't panned out
35AnonymousSep 27, 2026 16:31
If you're going from idol to actress, Sakamichi (Nogizaka/Keyaki/Hinatazaka) is the surefire route.
Pull it off right and you'll land more drama roles than young actresses from the big talent agencies.

Re: #35
Sakamichi girls are basically Sony actresses.
Though the biggest success story is Ikuta, who actually left.

Katayose Ryota (co-starred in a drama)
Kazuhara Ryuto (announced a collab track)
Yagi Yusei (co-starred in a drama)
Yoshino Hokuto (co-starred in a film, announced a collab track)

Airi's got a real knack for crossing paths with LDH vocalists

Re: #31
Film work is hard to come by in general, but she's landed solo lead roles and major parts in movies plus TV drama slots too, so she's in a good position.
43AnonymousSep 27, 2026 16:37
Re: #40
That's for the guys though
Stardust dominates when it comes to actors
Taiga drama leads might belong to Stardust forever at this rate
46AnonymousSep 27, 2026 16:38
Re: #39
Wouldn't having a member succeed after transferring actually work as a track record though?
49AnonymousSep 27, 2026 16:39
Re: #46
Sakamichi itself could really use a Nikaido Fumi-caliber talent of its own soon
50AnonymousSep 27, 2026 16:39
Re: #43
Wasn't this about female idols?
This is supposed to be an answer to "all they get is stage work"
But the answer here is about having non-stage work
54AnonymousSep 27, 2026 16:42
Re: #50
Well, there's Netflix now too
Actresses you'd never see on regular broadcast TV end up playing the lead there
58AnonymousSep 27, 2026 16:43
Suzuki Airi picked for Benza Block Blue

Re: #58
Benza Block Blue has historically gone to Amuse, Nogizaka46, and Keyakizaka46 talent
Airi landing that slot is a big deal
61AnonymousSep 27, 2026 16:45
Stardust and Amuse never pick up Akimoto-produced group talent (AKB48/Sakamichi-affiliated idols)
even though Amuse is short on actresses
64AnonymousSep 27, 2026 16:48
Re: #61
There's actually someone at Stardust who went from being an unpopular AKB member to an actress
She's been in everything from Ultraman to morning dramas
67AnonymousSep 27, 2026 16:52
Oh, so her name's Nakamura Kayano
Didn't know that
68AnonymousSep 27, 2026 16:54
Re: #67
She's the one in that Cosmo Oil commercial with Kaku Kento — a former AKB member now with Stardust, if you didn't realize

Re: #67
That's Masuyama Kayano from AKB48
69AnonymousSep 27, 2026 16:55
Feels like Sakamichi doesn't land that much work
Sony itself isn't exactly great at pitching its talent either
Yamashita and Yoda both keep getting stuck with supporting roles
Shiraishi ought to be getting bigger parts by now too
72AnonymousSep 27, 2026 16:58
Re: #69
Shiraishi gets to play the lead in prime-time (golden-time) slots, that's plenty good already
71AnonymousSep 27, 2026 16:57
Sakamichi members are undeniably strong on stage though
They land Imperial Theater lead roles like it's nothing, and it's an easy catch with Gekidan Shinkansen or Otona Keikaku too
91AnonymousSep 27, 2026 17:09
Re: #71
Their drawing power is just on a different level from Hello! Project's
80AnonymousSep 27, 2026 17:04
Lately Nishino Nanase, who got married, is actually landing more drama and film roles than Shiraishi

Re: #80
Isn't that just her husband's pull?
81AnonymousSep 27, 2026 17:04
Does Sayashi actually enjoy doing acting work?
89AnonymousSep 27, 2026 17:09
Re: #81
She's ambitious and strong-willed, so she seems to genuinely be into acting
92AnonymousSep 27, 2026 17:10
There are Super Sentai alumni like Yamada Yuki who don't show up much in dramas or films but never run out of stage work
but that kind of career doesn't really get respected, does it
95AnonymousSep 27, 2026 17:12
Re: #92
There are stage actors who didn't break into dramas until they hit middle age and now they're everywhere as supporting cast
but yeah, if you can't make it in screen work there's a ceiling either way
114AnonymousSep 27, 2026 17:29
Re: #92
Not sure about dramas, but he's in movies a lot, right
94AnonymousSep 27, 2026 17:12
Even within Sakamichi, it's not all about popularity — isn't there anyone who got picked purely for their acting chops?
99AnonymousSep 27, 2026 17:15
Re: #94
Nakamura Reno, who went from the understudy ranks to getting picked for Koichi's "Endless SHOCK," — you could say that wasn't just riding on popularity

Background and key points of the discussion

The “Benza Block Blue” commercial is a flagship campaign for Otsuka Pharmaceutical, and the role has historically gone to talent from major agencies — Amuse, Nogizaka46, Keyakizaka46. The thread rates the fact that Hello! Project’s Suzuki Airi broke into that lineup as a “big deal.” The real throughline of the thread, though, is the structural point that idols’ post-graduation work skews toward stage productions (musicals and straight plays): posters split between noting that Sakamichi groups are strong on Imperial Theater-caliber stages but haven’t yet produced a standout screen lead, versus Stardust Promotion, where talent like Tamai Shiori can land film work even while still active. No one in the thread pushed back on the underlying premise that stage work is a “lesser fallback,” and the fact that stage work itself is a stable line of employment went unmentioned — worth keeping in mind as a reader.
