  • Seibu Rookie Sowa Yokota Set for Minor-League Batting Title in His First Year Out of High School — 4th Player Ever, Following Ichiro

Seibu Lions high-school-draft rookie infielder Sowa Yokota (18) has all but locked up the farm (minor) league batting title after the full farm-league schedule wrapped up. Winning a farm-league batting title in his very first year out of high school would make him only the 4th player ever to do it, following Morimichi Takagi (1960), Ichiro Suzuki (1992), and Kota Yamashita (2019). On the forum, some posters were unimpressed, arguing ‘a batting average alone isn’t that big a deal,’ while others pointed out that players from new expansion clubs like Hayate and Oisix tend to have a structural edge in batting stats thanks to heavier playing time — alongside praise for Yokota’s own power and quality of contact. Opinion ended up split between excitement about his potential and skepticism about how much the title itself is really worth.

<Farm League Central Division: Hayate vs. Seibu> ◇ Sept. 27 ◇ Churu Stadium Shimizu

Seibu infielder Sowa Yokota (18) has all but clinched the farm-league batting title.

On the day the schedule wrapped up across all three farm-league divisions, Yokota started at shortstop batting seventh against Hayate. He came through with an RBI single to left field in his second at-bat.

Gotta give it to the Hayate players, though.

    Re: #4
Hayate's players stick around all season, so they hit the plate-appearance minimum easily — that's their advantage. On other teams, if you're good you get called up to the majors instead.

    Re: #10
Early in the season the minor-league batting average leaderboard was basically wall-to-wall Hayate and Oisix players. I used to wonder, 'Hayate's got so many big hitters on this leaderboard, why are they so weak?' — guess this explains it.

Hirosawa from Hayate, who's also in the batting title race, is really fast too. A team looking for a ready-made left-handed outfielder might just draft him.

    22AnonymousSep 27, 2026 17:19
In his rookie year he wasn't 'Ichiro' yet — he was still going by his full name, Ichiro Suzuki (he later became known simply by the mononym 'Ichiro').
    24AnonymousSep 27, 2026 17:20
When Yomiuri's Yamashita won the minor-league batting title in his first year out of high school, everyone was hyping him up hard. A wrist injury and shaky defense kept him from ever really breaking out, though.
    25AnonymousSep 27, 2026 17:21
As always, this team's draft picks are genuinely interesting — Shinohara's a good player too. Furuichi, who went to the BayStars, is doing pretty well in the majors as well.
    26AnonymousSep 27, 2026 17:21
This guy's started hitting for more power since midseason, and his body's already pretty well filled out — big expectations. Coaches have praised his work ethic from early on too. They should get him facing major-league-caliber pitching sooner rather than later.
    28AnonymousSep 27, 2026 17:22
Good hitters get called up to the majors, so they never stick around long enough to win the (minor-league) title.

Home-to-first sprint time (from the left side): roughly 4.2 seconds.

As a general pro-scouting benchmark, a left-handed batter running 4.1 seconds or under to first is rated as 'fast (top tier).'

Yokota, batting left-handed, clocks in around 4.2 seconds, which puts his raw sprint speed (time to first) in the 'average to slightly below-average' range by pro standards.

    Background and Talking Points

Japan’s current farm (minor) league setup spans three divisions, covering the original 12 NPB clubs — Seibu, Rakuten, Nippon-Ham, and the rest — plus two independent expansion teams, Kufu Hayate and Oisix Niigata. Because those two expansion clubs rarely lose their core players to major-league call-ups, their players find it easier to reach the plate-appearance minimum, which structurally makes it easier for them to land near the top of the batting leaderboards — the exact point the thread’s skeptics were picking up on. Yokota is being counted as only the 4th player ever to win a first-year minor-league batting title straight out of high school, following Morimichi Takagi (1960), Ichiro Suzuki (1992), and Kota Yamashita (2019) — though there’s a real gap in the numbers, with Ichiro hitting .366 versus Yokota’s .310. It’s also worth noting that Yamashita was highly touted at the time but struggled to establish himself in the majors due to injuries and defensive issues, a reminder that a minor-league batting title doesn’t guarantee big-league success.

*This article is compiled as excerpts and a summary of the 5ch (Geinou/Sports Express+) thread “[Baseball] Seibu’s 18-year-old rookie Sowa Yokota all but locks up minor-league batting title — 4th player ever to do so as a high-school rookie, including Ichiro.”

  • Would Dark Yugi win a Shadow Game? 5ch: “Wait, what’s Usogui?”

In a chat thread on 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyo G” (general live-commentary board), the topic bounced around fast — from comments watching someone’s first-ever VALORANT stream, to intros for Hololive’s new gacha characters, to the price gap on Blue-Eyes cards from the newest Yu-Gi-Oh! set. But what really got the thread going was a fantasy showdown: “If Dark Yugi and Usogui’s Baku played a Shadow Game, who’d win?” One reply shot back instantly, “Dark Yugi, obviously 😏,” while another asked, “Wait, what’s Usogui?” — unexpectedly exposing just how far apart the two series are in name recognition.

    Re: #180
    Wait, what's Usogui?

    Background and Talking Points

Dark Yugi is the alternate persona of Yugi Mutou, the protagonist of Yu-Gi-Oh!, while “Usogui” (literally “Lie Eater”) is the nickname of Baku, the protagonist of the manga of the same name. The two series ran in different eras and different magazines and have no real connection, so this matchup is just the kind of “what if” fantasy debate that regularly pops up on 5ch. The Yu-Gi-Oh! card talk that also caught fire, though, reflects a real-world situation: the new Blue-Eyes card from the latest set can go for as little as around ¥10 in buyback price as an ordinary single, while the same artwork in a low-pull-rate rarity like a secret rare can trade for anywhere from a few thousand to tens of thousands of yen per copy. It’s an everyday occurrence in trading card games for cards featuring the same character to vary wildly in price depending on print run and rarity, and it was surprise at that very price gap that kicked off the conversation in the thread.

    Background and Talking Points

The Limited Express Hida connects Nagoya and Osaka with Takayama and Hida-Furukawa. The Shinano also departs from Nagoya, but its route is completely different, so sharing a starting station is about the only thing the two trains have in common. Ujiyamada, a place name that came up in the thread, is the former name of Ise City: it was formed in 1906 when the towns of Uji and Yamada merged, and became today’s Ise City in 1955 after merging with surrounding towns and villages. The Takayama Main Line also runs along the Hida River, and the area around Shirakawa-guchi and Hichisou is well known for frequent suspensions and slowdowns whenever heavy rain hits. Rather than digging into any of this background, though, the thread mostly stuck to riffing on the sound of place names and casual chat along the way, and never really developed into a fact-based discussion.

Singer Mai Kuraki set a new Guinness World Record on the 27th for the most theme songs provided for an anime series by the same artist, reaching her 30th theme song for Detective Conan. She broke her own record of 21 songs, set in 2017, nine years later — and Conan himself showed up at the certification ceremony, which became a topic of conversation. On 5ch, reactions focused less on the rarity of the record itself and more on chatter about Conan’s remarkable longevity as a series and Kuraki’s age and career. Meanwhile, some comments brought up comparisons to Hikaru Utada and anecdotes from the 2000s entertainment world, and the discussion drifted from the record itself into more tangential talk.

She has provided numerous theme and ending songs for the hit anime Detective Conan, and with the unveiling of “Ai de Zenbu Dakishimete Aishite” (“Hold It All With Love and Love Me”) in the broadcast on the 26th, she reached her 30th song for the series. This breaks the record she was certified with in 2017 for “most theme songs performed for an anime series by the same artist,” which stood at 21 songs (at the time) — a record she now updates nine years later.

She reached 30 songs just as the anime marks its 30th broadcast anniversary. The show’s protagonist, Conan Edogawa, even showed up on the day, and Kuraki gave him a high-five before the two walked up to the stage hand in hand. “I’m overflowing with gratitude. This is a dreamlike, proud record I share with everyone involved in Detective Conan,” she said proudly.

All Hamada actually said to Utada was something like "there's a copycat of you running around lately" — the real idiots were the HEY!HEY!HEY! staff who helpfully slapped Mai Kuraki's name on the screen caption.

Guinness is the kind of thing where you pay money and apply asking to be certified, after all
Though it sounds like it's sometimes free and the vetting is done properly, so it's still better than Monde Selection (a Belgium-based awards body often mocked for handing out awards to almost anything that pays an entry fee)

    Background and Discussion Points

The record Mai Kuraki held — “most anime theme songs provided by the same artist” — was certified in 2017 at 21 songs, and this time, nine years later, it was updated at her 30th song. The news value here comes not just from breaking her own record, but from the fact that it lined up with Detective Conan’s 30th anniversary on air, giving it added significance beyond a simple personal milestone. Opinions split on the thread over how to value the record itself. A skeptical view held that it was “a niche record” and “something you can get just by paying for it,” while a more positive view held that simply staying at the forefront of the industry for 30 years is impressive in itself. Guinness World Records are sometimes free to apply for, but in many cases involve an application and review fee, and are awarded to anyone who meets the criteria — it’s not a simple “fame ranking,” a point that’s easy to misunderstand. The thread also touched on 2000s-era entertainment anecdotes, like Masatoshi Hamada’s “copycat” remark and rumors of a ban on the two of them appearing together, but these are past incidents unrelated to Kuraki’s current record and should be read as separate from the article’s main topic.

  • Phones and Tablets Getting Super-Resolution + Frame Generation Too — the ‘No More Consoles Needed?’ Debate Splits Opinion

Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon chip has been revealed to support “ANF,” a feature that boosts image quality and frame rates through super-resolution and frame generation — and Unreal Engine and Unity have already added support for it. According to the explanation, it can push 16fps up to 52fps, suggesting an era is approaching where even smartphones and tablets can comfortably run demanding games. When this story was reposted to 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board, comments clashed between “won’t dedicated game consoles become unnecessary now?” and rebuttals like “the walls of heat, battery life, and controls won’t be so easily overcome,” sparking a debate over pricing, device lifespan, and whether controller support is even worth it.

Super-resolution + frame generation coming to Android too — Snapdragon’s new GPU takes 16fps to 52fps

Qualcomm has explained that game engines like Unreal Engine and Unity already support ANF, and it’s expected that more game titles will gradually add ANF support going forward.

Honestly, what's actually becoming unnecessary is the PC
Play console exclusives on console, and for indie games that get buzz but never come to console, just buy them on Steam and play through something like GameHub

Do that and the reality is you never need to buy a gaming PC
Phone performance climbs every year, so the pool of games that run comfortably just keeps growing
For phone play, 720p on medium settings capped at 60fps is plenty, and for indie games battery drain isn't even that harsh

Mobile gaming stutters from overheating, cooling and battery are both weak, and if it's built around a controller anyway the whole point is lost — plus since it gets hammered daily for everything, it only lasts 1-2 years, yet costs around 200,000 yen, doesn't even have that many decent games, and comparing it to consoles is honestly laughable
Only mobile-gacha addicts hype this stuff up; normal people who actually play consoles don't give it a second glance
    53AnonymousSep 27, 2026 18:00
    Re: #44
I mean, most games and gacha titles people actually play on phones are old anyway, and if you've got the latest model or one gen back, heat and battery aren't really a problem
Just stick to games that actually have proper controller support
The ones that don't are genuinely trash, sure
And yeah, there really aren't many good games — it's mostly gacha apps
Price doesn't bother me since it's a phone I use every day anyway, and I'll be replacing it regardless of lifespan
There really aren't as many downsides as people say
The only real issue as a gaming device is the lack of games
    57AnonymousSep 27, 2026 18:03
Honestly, if you actually want to game, you'd be happier putting about half of what you'd spend on a phone into a console or PC instead
Even a phone around 100,000 yen these days runs most mobile apps fine — you don't need to drop 200,000-300,000 on one
Especially for something you're just carrying around
    62AnonymousSep 27, 2026 18:13
    Re: #57
The motivation is backwards to begin with
It starts with wanting a device that can make calls and get online, and then 'oh, it'd be nice if the device I already have could also play games'
That's the order it goes in
That's exactly why dedicated consoles lose to general-purpose devices

Background and key points of this discussion

The original article reports that Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon chip supports AI-driven super-resolution and frame generation (ANF), and that Unreal Engine and Unity already support it — it isn’t reporting on any specific console or new product launch. In the thread, optimistic views that improved smartphone/tablet performance will make dedicated consoles unnecessary clashed with opinions pointing out practical hurdles like heat, battery drain, controller ergonomics, and the cost of replacing a device every year. Worth keeping in mind: Japan in particular has a high share of home consoles and handhelds like the Switch, and mobile games are overwhelmingly free-to-play — so whether subscription or pay-once console games actually get displaced by phones hinges not just on raw performance but also on differences in sales models and controls.

※This article is compiled and summarized from the 5ch (Hardware/Industry [Geha]) thread “[Bad news for consoles] The era of super-resolution + frame generation is coming to phones and tablets too…“.

  • Tomoya Tsuboi Loses World Title Bid by Decision in Record-Tying 5th Pro Fight — 5ch: ‘Marajika Was Just Too Strong’

Tomoya Tsuboi (30), of the Teiken stable and the first Japanese boxer ever to win an amateur world championship gold medal, challenged for the vacant WBC world super flyweight title in only his 5th professional fight — but lost by decision to South Africa’s Ricardo Marajika (28). Tsuboi’s bid to become champion in a fight count that would have tied Japan’s fastest-ever climb to a world title fell short, not helped by bleeding from an early accidental head clash. On 5ch, opinions split between those calling the decision fair (“he was clearly outpointed in the second half”) and those reassessing the hype around him entirely (“he was just overrated — his skills weren’t there”).

Tomoya Tsuboi (30, Teiken), Japan’s first amateur world championship gold medalist and the WBC’s No. 1-ranked contender in the division, failed to capture the title. Bidding to become world champion in just his 5th pro fight — a mark that would have tied the Japanese record for fastest ascent to a title — Tsuboi entered the WBC world super flyweight title bout but was pushed hard and lost a decision to No. 2 contender Ricardo Marajika (28, South Africa). The result leaves Tsuboi’s record at 3 wins (2 KOs), 1 loss and 1 no-contest, while Marajika improves to 18 wins (12 KOs) and 2 losses.

that's because it was a vacant-title decision bout

Background and Key Points of This Story

Tsuboi climbed to the WBC’s No. 1 ranking on the strength of being Japan’s first amateur world championship gold medalist, and advanced to a “title decision bout” for the vacant championship rather than a challenge against a reigning champ. Worth noting: it’s precisely this “decision bout” framing that qualified him for a world title shot despite a pro career of only 5 fights — a key difference from a standard title defense. Within the thread, opinions split between those who felt the early head-clash cut affected the scoring and those who simply judged him outmatched in skill and power. A broader, more general claim also surfaced — that “boxers from an amateur background lack punching power” — a recurring stereotype about amateur-bred fighters that came up here independent of Tsuboi’s own result.

  • Asian Games Japan-Korea baseball final airs with no terrestrial broadcast, sparking debate — most blame the sport’s low profile, not ‘neglect’

On September 27, the Japan-Korea final of the Asian Games baseball tournament kicks off at 6:30 PM at Toyohashi Citizen Stadium in Aichi Prefecture. It’s a match with Japan’s first Asian title in 32 years — since the 1994 Hiroshima Games — on the line, but there’s no terrestrial broadcast; the only live coverage is on the streaming service “U-NEXT.” Since the roster is centered on corporate-league players for Samurai Japan’s amateur (industrial-league) squad, including Arata Higuchi (Oji) and Motoki Mukoyama (NTT East), reactions on 5ch were split: most took it in stride with comments like “no terrestrial broadcast is understandable,” while others questioned the decision, asking “shouldn’t finals across all sports get broadcast at least?” and “there’s a medal on the line, though.”

On September 27, the Japan-Korea final of the Asian Games baseball tournament — held in Japan for the first time in 32 years — will take place at Toyohashi Citizen Stadium. The highly anticipated Japan-Korea showdown is set for a 6:30 PM first pitch that same day, with live coverage airing on the streaming service “U-NEXT.” No terrestrial live broadcast is planned.

Facing off against Korea, which is aiming for the incredible feat of a fifth straight title, Japan enters with Samurai Japan’s industrial-league (corporate amateur) representative squad, built around top corporate-league players such as left-hander Arata Higuchi (Oji), outfielder Motoki Mukoyama (NTT East), and catcher Yuki Tsujimoto (NTT West). The goal: Japan’s first Asian championship in 32 years, since the 1994 Hiroshima Games.

It’s truly a historic match, but since the team is centered on corporate-league players, most reactions showed understanding toward the lack of a terrestrial broadcast. Still, some viewers and fans online raised questions about it.

Even comparing the full national teams, soccer's average height keeps climbing higher — it's really not the era anymore where the most physically gifted athletes go for baseball. Baseball's about to become the short guys' sport.
    104AnonymousSep 27, 2026 19:27
    Re: #98
It's basically become common knowledge now that baseball is the sport for the 'physically weak.'

Background and key points of this discussion

The main reason no terrestrial broadcast was arranged is that the roster isn’t built around NPB/MLB stars like Shohei Ohtani, but around corporate-league players such as Arata Higuchi and Motoki Mukoyama, forming the “Samurai Japan industrial-league representative squad.” Unlike international tournaments featuring pros, ratings are hard to guarantee, and broadcasters sticking to streaming instead isn’t unique to baseball. On the thread, the dominant view leaned less toward “neglect” and more toward the reality that “baseball is now being treated as a non-pro, non-major sport.” The points of contention were the asymmetry in stakes — since winning the Asian Games exempts Korean players from military service, making their side’s motivation different from Japan’s — and doubts about the tournament structure itself, given that with essentially only Japan, Korea, and Taiwan competing, a medal is nearly guaranteed regardless of outcome. The weight of Japan’s potential first title in 32 years doesn’t fully come across, and that gap traces back to just how unevenly popular the sport is across the region.

  • Ado’s Agency President Hints at Legal Action Over Slander as Festival Staging Sparks Online Backlash

By September 27, Takuya Chigira, president of Cloud Nine — the talent agency representing singer Ado (23) — had updated the agency’s official X account to state that they plan to pursue legal action against slander on a case-by-case basis going forward. The controversy stems from Ado’s headlining performance at the Korean-originated music festival “INKIGAYO LIVE in TOKYO” on the 23rd, where photography and binoculars were banned in the venue, the customary all-artist finale was scrapped, and the closing number was, of all things, “Odoru Ponpokorin” (the beloved theme song from the anime Chibi Maruko-chan). On social media, frustration with the event organizers and personal attacks on Ado herself spread together in a tangle, and on 5ch both “the complaints about the staging are legitimate” and “the agency’s response is going too far” camps emerged.

By the 27th, Takuya Chigira, president of Cloud Nine — the agency representing singer Ado (23) — had updated the agency’s official X account, addressing the swirl of pro-and-con reactions on social media over the staging of a music festival Ado performed at. He went on to state that the agency intends to respond to slander on a case-by-case basis.

Ado performed at the 23rd show of “INKIGAYO LIVE in TOKYO,” a music festival hosted by the Korean music program “SBS Inkigayo,” where she served as the headliner. At this event, artists typically all gather on stage for a finale after the last performer sings, but since that didn’t happen on the 23rd, social media saw a mix of praise and criticism over the staging.

    119AnonymousSep 27, 2026 19:33
    Re: #116
It was a secret guest slot.

Background and Key Points of This Story

President Chigira’s statement wasn’t simply a “warning about slander” — what complicates matters is that it spread while tangled up with two separate things: frustration over the festival organizers’ staging changes (the photo and binoculars ban, the scrapped finale) and personal attacks aimed at Ado herself. “INKIGAYO LIVE in TOKYO” is a joint festival hosted by a Korean music program, and at co-hosted events like this, each artist’s individual contract terms (whether filming is allowed, whether they join group staging, etc.) are often negotiated separately — meaning such calls aren’t necessarily made solely at the organizer’s discretion. On the thread, “criticism of the staging” and “personal attacks on the artist” tended to get lumped together, but legal action would fundamentally target the latter — criticism of the event operators itself is a separate matter that should be distinguished from slander. That’s a distinction readers can easily miss.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Geinou/Sports News+) thread “[Music] Ado’s agency president hints at legal action over slander, “to protect the artist” — festival appearance sparks pro-and-con reactions on SNS [Ailuropoda melanoleuca★].”

  • Reincarnated Into the Gundam Universe? 5ch Debates Whether You’d Be Stuck as a Bottom-Tier Pilot

A thread on 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyo G” board (aka “NanJ”) asked: “Even if we got reincarnated into the Gundam universe, wouldn’t we just end up as bottom-tier pilots, like Guncannon pilots?” In the show’s setting, Mobile Suit (MS) pilots are usually elite military officers — second lieutenants fresh out of officer academy — so pessimistic replies piled up fast: “Could guys like us even become soldiers in the first place?” and “We’d be lucky just to get a seat in a mass-produced Ball.” Others pushed back, arguing mass-produced units are smaller targets with better survival odds, and that serving as crew on a battleship might actually be more dangerous. The debate spread further into where ship crews stand, and whether it’d be better to be reborn into the Earth Federation or Zeon.

Is the Ball really as much of a coffin as people say?
The unit's small, so it's a small target, and it's got decent mobility too — seems like it'd dodge more and have a higher survival rate
Plus you're basically always paired up with a GM by default, so wouldn't that make it even more likely you'd come home alive?

    Pretty sure it's this

Background and key points of the debate

The thread’s starting premise is that Gundam-universe MS (Mobile Suit) pilots are generally established as officers of second-lieutenant rank or higher, meaning only academy-trained elites get to fly them. But since spin-off games like Gihren’s Greed feature plenty of pilots ranked below second lieutenant, opinions split over whether to go by the original anime’s canon or the games’. Another sticking point was the mass-produced “Ball”: some argued it has strong survival odds as a small, mobile target, while others countered that serving as battleship crew is actually riskier, since one slow call from the captain can take the whole crew down with it. Note that while only one unit of the original Gundam (RX-78) actually saw combat on-screen, the setting also includes several prototype units — the “7 units” mentioned by one commenter is thought to refer to this group of prototypes. All of this is banter about a fictional setting within the anime; it doesn’t involve any real people or events.

  • Chunichi Dragons Headed for Last Place in Their 90th Anniversary Year — 5ch: ‘If It Makes Everyone Happy, I’m Fine Finishing Last’

In 2026, the year the Chunichi Dragons mark the 90th anniversary of the club’s founding, they look all but certain to finish dead last in the Central League. By contrast, the Yomiuri Giants won the league in 2024, their own 90th-anniversary year, and the Hanshin Tigers did the same in 2025, their 90th-anniversary year — the stark contrast became a hot topic on 5ch’s general sports board. Threads split between defiant defenses like “the money’s the same whether you finish 5th or last” and “finishing last helps in the draft,” and criticism aimed at the team’s frequent come-from-ahead losses, bullpen management, and debate over whether a managerial change is warranted.

Then again, Chunichi wraps up their whole schedule early and gets to watch from the sidelines.
Hiroshima and Yakult are on a whole different level of terrible, so they'll just lose their way down on their own.
Chunichi won't have to do a thing and will end up climbing to 4th by the end.

Sandora was saying the same thing —

At this point you'd think both Chunidora fans and the front office would understand that "changing the manager doesn't change how strong you are"

    110AnonymousSep 27, 2026 18:45
The bullpen's awfulness is the biggest reason they've been weak in recent years,
so why does all the blame get dumped on the position-player-turned-manager
while the pitching coaches, scouts, and front office get a free pass?

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Chunichi had already been finishing last in prior years, and this would make it three years running. Under NPB rules the last-place team gets priority in the amateur draft, which is why some in the thread argued that “being weak actually pays off in the draft” — though others pointed out that the team’s recent draft picks haven’t panned out, so whether they’re actually cashing in on that structural advantage is a separate matter. It’s also worth noting that figures tossed around in the thread, like “40 come-from-ahead losses” or a “home win rate of .500 versus a .300 road win rate,” reflect posters’ impressions rather than confirmed official statistics. The debate over whether replacing the manager would change anything also spilled into deeper territory — the front office, scouting, and player development — framing the problem as structural rather than simply a matter of poor in-game management.
