  • Whether You Took Middle School Entrance Exams Has ‘No Effect’ on Future Income — 5ch: ‘Only 500 People?’

A survey conducted by Professor Megumi Ohashi (social psychology) of Tokyo Future University on people who took middle school entrance exams found that while exam-takers go on to university at higher rates, there was no notable difference in their income once they reached adulthood — a finding reported by the Asahi Shimbun. On 5ch, some questioned the small sample size and the academic ranking of the university that conducted the study, while a stream of comments argued that “the real benefit of middle school entrance exams isn’t income, it’s avoiding the rough environment of public schools,” developing into a debate over the difference in environment between private integrated junior-senior high schools and public middle schools.

People who took middle school entrance exams go on to university at higher rates — but that doesn’t necessarily mean they earn more once they reach adulthood. That’s the picture that emerged from a survey of middle-school-exam takers conducted by Professor Megumi Ohashi of Tokyo Future University (social psychology) and others.

That just means you picked the wrong place to live.
You don't need a full-blown 'education district' — factor in things like several universities being nearby or the general vibe along the train line, and you can cut the odds a lot.
It won't hit zero, but plenty of above-average kids go to public school without bothering with entrance exams.

In the western part of the prefecture, the golden route is Shizuoka University's affiliated middle school or a local public middle school, then on to Hamamatsu Kita High School.
I went that route myself, but I'm in the Kanto area now, so I had my own kid take the entrance exams.

You might not know this, but Aichi Prefecture has been setting up affiliated middle schools on the grounds of its top public high schools.

Other prefectures will probably copy this.
    196AnonymousSep 27, 2026 18:43
    Re: #187
That's a pattern doomed to fail.
It's already been proven in other prefectures that the 'attached' style of public integrated junior-senior high schools doesn't work well.

Tokyo and Kanagawa also originally had attached-style public integrated schools that kept taking high school applicants, but it went so poorly that they stopped high school admissions and switched to fully integrated schools.
If Aichi sticks with the attached style, it'll fail too.
    212AnonymousSep 27, 2026 18:47
    Re: #196
Chiba Prefectural also set up middle schools, but the gap with Shibuya Makuhari just keeps widening.
It would've been better to scrap school districts like Tokyo and Kanagawa did, and pull in top performers through high school entrance exams instead.
    258AnonymousSep 27, 2026 19:05
    Re: #196
You can't really say which is correct — the integrated junior-senior high model like in Kanto, or the high-school-focused model like in Osaka that gives public middle schoolers a fair shot.
Even Osaka's Ishin (Osaka Ishin no Kai, the region's dominant political party) hasn't gone and turned Kitano High School into an integrated junior-senior high school.

Background and key points of this discussion

The eye-catching part of this survey is that “taking middle school entrance exams doesn’t guarantee a payoff in income.” But the original article alone doesn’t reveal the sampling method or statistical verification techniques, and skepticism about the small sample size ran deep on the thread. One thing worth noting: the university enrollment rate itself is reportedly higher among those who took entrance exams, so “no difference in income” doesn’t mean “no difference in educational background.” The discussion gradually shifted to whether the point of middle school entrance exams is income or choosing one’s social environment, with personal accounts of rough public middle schools running alongside counterarguments that the same problems crop up at private schools too. There were also comments about the success or failure of public integrated junior-senior high schools in Aichi and Chiba, pointing to regional differences that don’t fit a simple public-vs-private divide.

    Background and Talking Points

Post titles like “I’m a girl but I did X” are a common format on 5ch’s livestream-chat boards, seemingly designed to draw more replies by revealing the poster’s gender. In this thread too, reply #17 mocked the technique itself, calling it “a pathetic thread that only gets traction because it tacked on ‘I’m a girl.’” As for the cooking method — laying a thin fried-egg sheet over yakisoba — commenters explained it echoes a restaurant technique: frying yakisoba for multiple servings at once, then pouring beaten egg onto a griddle per serving and plating the noodles on top so the egg finishes cooking just as it’s served. This is easily mistaken for omu-soba (omelette-wrapped yakisoba) when attempted at home, which itself became a talking point. The suspicion that the mayonnaise was “AI-generated,” based on its shape, is a typical reflex on anonymous boards to question whether a posted photo is real. Readers should keep in mind that in these photo-post threads, reactions tend to focus less on the food itself and more on the poster’s identity and the authenticity of the image.

  • Sumo Autumn Tournament: Onosato beats Aonishiki on final day for 6th career title, 3rd straight Autumn crown

The Autumn Grand Sumo Tournament reached its final day on the 27th, with yokozuna Onosato defeating ozeki Aonishiki by a thrusting force-out to clinch his sixth career championship — his first in six tournaments — finishing 12-3. Onosato lost to maegashira Takayasu on day four but then reeled off eight straight wins to build a commanding lead, only to drop back-to-back bouts to ozeki Kirishima on day 13 and ozeki Kotozakura on day 14, letting Aonishiki draw level at 11-3. In the tournament’s first final-day showdown between tied leaders in 11 tournaments, the yokozuna finally shoved his way to victory. On 5ch, many posters praised Onosato’s grit as a yokozuna, while others weighed in on the ozeki-vs-ozeki bout and speculated about next tournament’s ozeki and yokozuna promotion pushes.

The final day of the Autumn Grand Sumo Tournament was held on the 27th at Tokyo’s Ryogoku Kokugikan, where in the tournament’s closing bout yokozuna Onosato (26, Nishonoseki stable) defeated ozeki Aonishiki (22, Ajigawa stable) to finish 12-3 and claim his sixth career title — his first since last year’s Autumn tournament. It’s his third straight title at the Autumn meet, a tournament he clearly has a knack for, and his fifth Emperor’s Cup won at the Ryogoku Kokugikan.

It was a decisive win: a sharp charge at the face-off, a two-handed thrust to push his opponent back, and a relentless drive forward to force him out.

This tournament, Onosato lost to maegashira Takayasu on day four but bounced back with eight straight wins. He briefly built up a two-win lead, but then suffered a shocking pair of back-to-back losses — an underarm-throw reversal to ozeki Kirishima on day 13, followed by a slap-down loss to ozeki Kotozakura (28, Sadogatake stable) on day 14. That let Aonishiki, who had rallied with eight straight wins of his own after dropping three in a row from day four, draw level at 11-3. But in the end Onosato showed true yokozuna grit, winning the tournament’s first final-day showdown between tied leaders in 11 tournaments.

    Re: #94
He had 12 wins last tournament, so if he gets 13 wins or ties for the championship this time, he should get the promotion.

    Background and Talking Points

The standard for promotion from ozeki to yokozuna is officially “winning two consecutive tournaments, or an equivalent record,” with no explicit numerical benchmark for wins. Kirishima beat Onosato on day 13 but ultimately finished 8-7, pushing his yokozuna bid to next tournament or beyond. Aonishiki also lost, finishing 12-3, but some posters in the thread felt continued strong results could still put a yokozuna promotion within reach. This was the first time in 11 tournaments that a final-day showdown between tied leaders featured wrestlers of yokozuna/ozeki rank, and the relative rarity of such down-to-the-wire bouts in recent years is cited as one reason this one drew so much attention. Some posts also speculated about “favor-trading” (star lending/borrowing) between the two ozeki, but it’s worth noting this isn’t based on any objective evidence — it remains pure fan speculation.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Geisokusoku+) thread “【Sumo】Autumn tournament finale: Onosato’s tearful comeback! Third straight Autumn title! Beats Aonishiki in a final-day tied-leaders showdown to claim his 6th championship — the lone yokozuna shows his grit“

  • School Ad’s Claim That ‘No One Is Born With Different Abilities’ Sparks Debate: Nature vs. Nurture

A single line in a school’s advertisement — “there’s no such thing as innate ability differences” — has sparked a debate on 5ch. It appears to be meant as an encouraging message for students facing entrance exams or job hunting, but posters weren’t taking it at face value, and opinions split over just how much genetics shapes intelligence and athletic ability. Citing findings that identical twins raised in different environments ended up with similar academic performance, and pointing to the idea that Shohei Ohtani wouldn’t have found the same success had he chosen a different path, the “environment matters more” camp and the “genetics matters more” camp both dug in, with plenty of sarcasm flying at the cult of effort along the way.

    Re: #71
    After you're born,
differences do start forming depending on your environment though.

Background and Key Points of This Debate

The phrase “ability isn’t innate, it comes down to effort” is commonly used in school settings as a stock line to encourage students, not as a scientific claim. That said, in the field of behavioral genetics, twin studies have built up evidence that some individual differences in intelligence and athletic ability can be explained by genetic factors, with the relative contribution of genes versus environment varying a great deal depending on the type of ability. The twin studies and heritability figures cited in the thread only loosely echo that body of research and shouldn’t be taken as settled academic figures. Some posts also raised the point that saying “there’s no such thing as innate ability differences” risks being insensitive to people born with congenital disabilities — highlighting a gap between educational slogans and how those directly affected might receive them. The thread reached no clear conclusion.

  • 35-Year-Old, 58kg Man Bans Himself From Home Cooking for a Week to Recreate the Diet of a Middle-Aged Bachelor

In a Toyo Keizai Online article, a 35-year-old, 58kg reporter’s project to recreate “the diet of a middle-aged single man” for one week became a hot topic on 5channel’s News Express+ board. The article’s premise cites a Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare survey showing that 34.0% of men in their 20s to 60s are obese, while only 23.4% of men in their 30s and 40s have regular exercise habits. The thread split widely — from the practical argument that “cooking for yourself doesn’t even suit living alone,” to personal accounts that “past 40, you gain or lose weight no matter what you do,” to criticism that the article’s headline phrasing “the reason why…” is typical of a “made-up filler piece” that never actually reveals its reasoning.

    Is your waistline doing okay?

According to the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare’s “Overview of the FY2024 National Health and Nutrition Survey Results,” 34.0% of men in their 20s to 60s are obese (BMI of 25 or higher). The proportion with regular exercise habits was 23.4% for men in their 30s, 23.4% for men in their 40s, and 30.4% for men in their 50s.

An unbalanced diet, lack of exercise… full-time salaried employees live in an environment where it’s easy to gain weight. At the same time, obesity sharply raises the risk of serious, life-threatening illnesses and severely lowers healthy life expectancy and quality of life.

    – With lukewarm water (a temperature that feels slightly underwhelming when poured on your body), thoroughly wash your scalp with your fingertips for about 2 minutes

When you exercise you get super hungry and end up eating even more.

The Toyo Keizai Online survey behind the article cites the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare’s “FY2024 National Health and Nutrition Survey,” which found that 34.0% of men in their 20s to 60s are obese (BMI 25 or higher), with 23.4% of men in their 30s and 40s and 30.4% of men in their 50s having regular exercise habits. The thread mainly split over whether cooking for yourself is actually worth it — arguments against it centered on time, food costs, and food waste, while a middle-ground view held that at least cooking your own rice is worthwhile. Another major point of interest was the backlash against the headline’s vague “the reason why…” phrasing, with many commenters criticizing it as a “made-up filler piece” that never actually states its reasoning in the body text. Note that the specific weight figures and numerical changes from the original experiment don’t appear in the thread’s quoted excerpts, so readers wanting details of the actual results should check the source article.

  • Coffee prices soar and the ‘2050 problem’ looms — companies bet on coffee-like alternative drinks

Against the backdrop of soaring coffee bean prices and the “2050 problem” — the concern that climate change will shrink the land suitable for growing coffee in the future — companies have been rolling out alternative drinks aimed at capturing a coffee-like taste, one after another. The idea is to drum up demand with affordably priced products while also preparing for a future in which coffee beans become harder to source. On the thread, posters brought up existing substitutes like dandelion coffee, brown rice coffee, and coffee made from civet cat or elephant droppings, speculated that Japan might eventually become suitable for growing coffee itself, and pointed out that the weak yen has driven up prices for everything from coffee beans to orange juice — the discussion ranged from the merits of alternative coffee to climate change and currency exchange rates.

As a new development in the soft drink market this year, alternative (substitute) coffee drinks have been announced one after another.

With coffee bean prices soaring and doubts growing over the sustainability of coffee bean production, the aim is twofold: to drum up demand with affordably priced products that still deliver a coffee-like taste, and to prepare for a future in which cost and sourcing issues make it harder to build product lineups around actual coffee beans.

Behind this lies the “coffee 2050 problem” — a warning that even as global coffee consumption rises, the land suitable for growing coffee may shrink due to the effects of climate change.

Well, China's coffee bubble is over too.

Background and key points on this topic

The “coffee 2050 problem” is a long-standing industry warning that climate change will drastically shrink the land suitable for growing Arabica and other coffee varieties in the future, pointing to a long-term risk in sourcing raw materials. The recent rise in coffee bean prices discussed in the thread, by contrast, is driven mainly by short-term factors like the weak yen and swings in international markets — it’s worth treating that as a separate issue from the “2050 problem” described in the article, since the two are different in nature. Also, alternative coffees aren’t limited to novelties made from elephant or civet cat droppings; caffeine-free options like dandelion coffee and brown rice coffee have long been sold commercially as everyday beverages. So this latest round of moves by various companies is less about new technology and more an attempt to push existing alternatives into the mainstream.

  • Dormy Inn’s ¥4,750 Room Sparks Buzz Over Insane Value

A poster shared photos of the ¥4,750 room they stayed in at Dormy Inn, sparking a wave of reactions on “Nanimo Jikkyo G” (a 5channel discussion board). Officially it’s classified as a capsule hotel, but the rooms are fully separated from their neighbors by solid walls, with only the upper bunks partially connected. Commenters also pointed out the free earplugs and the impressively well-appointed communal bath and sauna, and the talk expanded into comparisons with Kaikatsu Club (an internet café chain), love hotels, and capsule hotels in other cities (like Daitoyo in Osaka, Cabinas in Fukuoka, and Wellbe in Nagoya). Opinions split between prioritizing cheapness versus comfort.

    Background and Talking Points

Dormy Inn is known as a business hotel chain with communal baths and saunas, and this time the buzz centered on one of its lower-priced, capsule-style rooms. The thread split over how to judge the fact that “it’s officially a capsule hotel, but the rooms are properly walled off from their neighbors” — with some worried about the sense of confinement and others saying it’s not bad at all, more like a secret hideout. The discussion also expanded to cover breakfast being an extra charge (+¥2,000), complaints about Kaikatsu Club’s air conditioning and cleanliness, and the reality of people using love hotels solo, touching on how people choose between different lodging and rest facilities in general. One thing readers could easily misread: this price and experience reflect the poster’s own conditions for a single night’s stay (timing, specific branch, plan), and aren’t necessarily the same at every Dormy Inn location or at every time of year.

    It's all about timing
In Hello! Project, timing matters more than talent or looks

    Background and Talking Points

Hello! Project’s trainee system has long operated by handpicking new-group members from among its trainees. Nanami Tanabe came up through this same trainee program, but never passed the Morning Musume. audition — and every time a new group formed afterward, whether Juice=Juice, Country Girls, or later Kobushi Factory and Tsubaki Factory, fans kept bringing her up and asking why she was never chosen. What split opinion in the thread was whether her departure at the time was her own decision, or simply came down to where the pass line and timing happened to fall. Trainees’ fates hinge not just on talent but on when auditions are held and which groups happen to have open slots — and the view that “in Hello! Project, timing matters more than talent or looks” is one longtime fans have voiced again and again. Whether this reunion was pure coincidence or the continuation of an old bond wasn’t made clear in the thread.

  • Sprinters Stakes: 9th Favorite Puro Magic Wins Wire-to-Wire — 5ch: ‘¥100 Bet Turned Into ¥2,400’

On September 27, the Sprinters Stakes (G1) at Nakayama Racecourse was won wire-to-wire by 9th-favorite Puro Magic. Jockey Nozomi Iwata picked up his second career G1 win aboard the horse. The upset victory over the top favorites sparked a wave of surprised reactions on 5ch — comments like “Autumn’s first G1 already turned into chaos” and “I bet ¥100 and it came back ¥2,400” — while others focused on the race itself, questioning the riding through the race, the use of the whip before the start, and the severity of the penalty points for interference.

The Sprinters Stakes, contested by five G1-winning horses vying for the title of fastest sprinter, was won by Puro Magic.

Puro Magic is by sire Asia Express, out of dam Mejeruda.

▼About the Sprinters Stakes: Established in 1967 as the only graded stakes race for 4-year-olds (now categorized as 3-year-olds) and up run over 1,200m on turf. It was upgraded to G1 status in 1990 and became an international race in 1994. After becoming a G1, it was initially held at Nakayama in late December, before being moved to the final week of Nakayama’s autumn meet in 2000.

    Background and Key Points

The Sprinters Stakes is a historic G1 turf sprint over 1,200m established in 1967, upgraded to G1 status in 1990, and made an international race in 1994. This time, 9th-favorite Puro Magic held off the top picks to win wire-to-wire, sparking both amazement over the size of the payouts and questions about the race itself on 5ch. Opinions were especially split over the whip use before the start and the riding through the race, with some comparing JRA’s traditional methods to the gate-loading techniques used overseas. There were also comments raising concerns about the severity of the penalty points for interference — a point based on information JRA itself has made public. At the same time, several commenters noted that Puro Magic’s recent form actually hadn’t been bad, suggesting it wasn’t simply a “surprise long shot” but a horse whose merits were genuinely debated — a nuance that doesn’t fully come through in the article text alone.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Geinou/Sports Breaking News+) thread “[Horse Racing] Sprinters Stakes (Nakayama, G1): 9th-favorite Puro Magic wins wire-to-wire! Jockey Nozomi Iwata’s second career G1 win.”

  • Do OGs Only Get Stage Work? 5ch Compares Post-Graduation Careers from Hello! Project, Sakamichi, and AKB

A thread on 5ch caught fire over the idea that female idols — not just from Hello! Project, but AKB48, Nogizaka46, and others — tend to see their post-graduation work skew heavily toward stage productions. One spark for the discussion: Suzuki Airi’s casting in Otsuka Pharmaceutical’s “Benza Block Blue” commercial, a slot that has historically gone to talent from Amuse, Nogizaka46, and Keyakizaka46, making the pick of a Hello! Project alum feel like a real departure. Posters also pointed to her role in the film “Sakuya Yareta Kamo” (“I Could’ve Killed Him Last Night”), opening October 23, and to how much screen work Stardust Promotion talent tends to land, framing the debate around how differences in each agency’s “sales pitch” power shape careers after graduation.

    Re: #94
Nakamura Reno, who went from the understudy ranks to getting picked for Koichi's "Endless SHOCK," — you could say that wasn't just riding on popularity

Background and key points of the discussion

The “Benza Block Blue” commercial is a flagship campaign for Otsuka Pharmaceutical, and the role has historically gone to talent from major agencies — Amuse, Nogizaka46, Keyakizaka46. The thread rates the fact that Hello! Project’s Suzuki Airi broke into that lineup as a “big deal.” The real throughline of the thread, though, is the structural point that idols’ post-graduation work skews toward stage productions (musicals and straight plays): posters split between noting that Sakamichi groups are strong on Imperial Theater-caliber stages but haven’t yet produced a standout screen lead, versus Stardust Promotion, where talent like Tamai Shiori can land film work even while still active. No one in the thread pushed back on the underlying premise that stage work is a “lesser fallback,” and the fact that stage work itself is a stable line of employment went unmentioned — worth keeping in mind as a reader.
