  • China Reports Bite on Judoka Rin Maeda as ‘Accidental’ — 5ch: ‘A Bite Mark Like That Doesn’t Happen by Accident’

In the women’s judo 70kg quarterfinals at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games on October 1, gold medalist Rin Maeda (21) was bitten on the left arm by China’s Tang Jing, who was immediately disqualified for the foul. Chinese outlet Sohu reported the incident as an “accidental bite,” claiming the Chinese athlete’s camp was confused by the referee’s ruling. On 5ch, users questioned whether a bite hard enough to leave tooth marks through a judo uniform could really be accidental, with many saying the footage clearly shows intent — and most of the doubt centered on the Chinese media’s use of the word “accidental” itself.

[Judo] Chinese Media Calls Bite on Rin Maeda “Accidental” — Chinese Athlete’s Camp “Confused” by Disqualification

Chinese media reported on the incident in which Rin Maeda (21, of Pacific University), who won gold in the women’s 70kg judo division at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games (Oct. 1, IG Arena), was bitten on the left arm by China’s Tang Jing in the quarterfinals.

Chinese outlet Sohu ran the story under the headline: “Controversial Ruling at the Asian Games! Chinese Judoka Accidentally Bites Japanese Opponent, Referee Declares Immediate Loss.”

There really ought to be a rule banning people who pull stuff like this from international competition.

Background and Key Points of This Story

Under judo’s rules, biting an opponent is treated as a dangerous act warranting immediate disqualification, and Tang Jing was indeed disqualified on the spot. The sticking point in the thread was whether the bite was truly accidental — Chinese media’s framing of it as “accidental” drew heavy skepticism, with many questioning whether a bite strong enough to leave tooth marks through a uniform could really happen by mistake. Biting as a foul isn’t unique to this case or to any one country — boxing’s Luis Suárez incident, for example, sparked similar controversy in the past. It’s worth noting that what the Chinese media reported and what the athlete or the Chinese judo federation may have officially stated are two separate things — no official explanation from the athlete or federation is detailed in the reporting itself. While the topic easily tips into emotional nationalism online, the disqualification itself was simply a standard application of the sport’s rules.

  • Sony’s New “Wolverine” Game Already 44% Off in Germany Too — 5ch: “You Don’t Often See a Worldwide Fire Sale Like This”

Sony’s new title “Wolverine” became a hot topic on 5ch’s game hardware board (Gehan) after it was found to be discounted 44% in the German market just days after release. In the thread, users pointed out that the discount rate was also steep in Japan, while reports poured in of physical copies sitting unsold on shelves overseas as well, prompting comments like “You rarely see a game go on a worldwide fire sale like this.” The focus of discussion was why a title built around such a popular character — one expected to be a hit based on pre-order numbers — is struggling everywhere. Posters also noted that the Metacritic score came in lower than expected, and that the shift toward download-only releases makes it harder to gauge a game’s quality from the outside.

It's just that Japan is bombing to an extreme degree — even a market the size of Spain moved 50k in its first week

    59AnonymousOct 2, 2026 17:25
This is exactly why download-only is risky — it's not that physical gets discontinued, it's that the game is trash and doesn't sell, so it gets discounted
Meaning you'd end up only able to buy a game like this digitally, with no way to return it. Whether you're a physical buyer or a digital-only buyer, there's nothing but downside here

    97AnonymousOct 2, 2026 18:41
    Re: #96
Then why isn't the game selling????

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

It’s not unusual for new games to get discounted shortly after release overseas, but what stood out in the thread was the disconnect: “pre-order demand was supposedly strong, yet physical stock is piling up on shelves, and the Metascore came in lower than expected at 75.” It’s worth noting that the specific discount percentages and shipment figures cited in the thread are all individual posters’ own estimates, not confirmed official sales figures. Posters also raised a broader point: as games move toward download-only releases, “market signals” like discounts and used-game circulation become harder to see, leaving buyers with less information to judge quality before purchase — making this more than just a question of whether one particular game is good or bad.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The source here is a web survey (4,036 respondents) published by rankingoo.net on October 1, 2026, ranking currently active female idol groups — note that it’s limited specifically to “groups.” The suspicion of vote-rigging raised in the thread (post 27) comes from the nature of this kind of online poll, which tends to be swayed by how effectively a fanbase can mobilize votes. It’s also easy to overlook that, because the ranking is limited to groups, solo-active idols are excluded from the tally entirely — making them a separate matter from individual popularity rankings like the one in post 64. The thread’s two main flashpoints were surprise at how AKB48 and Morning Musume, both still going after all these years, remain so popular, and a debate over whether BABYMETAL even counts as an “idol” group. The observation that K-pop groups were excluded from the tally (post 43) also shows that this ranking assumes “domestic Japanese idols” as its premise.

"Hey, aren't you just a quota pick!" "Cut it out, you!" (referring to preferential admission slots for women at some Japanese universities, a frequent flashpoint in these debates)

Background and Key Points of the Debate

“Wakatte.tv” built its popularity on a format where the cast critiques each other’s academic pedigree, and the new disclaimer looks like an extension of that same shtick. Still, many on the thread pointed out that despite resuming right after apologizing over the radiation remark, the show kept its academic-background-teasing stance from the very opening — prompting comments like “a disclaimer doesn’t excuse saying anything you want.” The debate was further complicated by the fact that some cast members themselves are high school graduates or attended universities outside the top tier, blurring the line between who gets to mock academic background and who’s on the receiving end. While some viewers say the show motivates them to study, others see the whole format as drawing lines based on academic pedigree and view it critically — leaving opinions firmly split.

  • Handwriting in Daily Life Down 70% — 5ch: ‘I’ve Never Once Seen “Shiodoki” Used Correctly’

On October 2, the Agency for Cultural Affairs released the results of its fiscal 2025 “Public Opinion Survey on the Japanese Language.” A notable share of respondents said they now have fewer chances to write by hand in daily life, and the survey also found that words such as “funpan mono” (lit. “something that makes you spit out your rice laughing,” now often used to mean “outrageous” or “infuriating”) and “nagare ni sao sasu” (lit. “to pole a boat along with the current,” meaning to ride the momentum of the moment, but widely misread as going against it) are spreading with meanings that differ from their original ones. On 5ch, a thread lit up with chatter about the merits of keeping a diary with a fountain pen, other commonly misused words like “shiodoki” (the right time to act, often misused to mean “the time to quit”) and “yakubusoku” (underqualified for a role, often misused to mean the opposite), and firsthand accounts of forgetting how to write kanji — all feeding a lively discussion about how the meanings of words drift over time.

'Keiteki o narasu' (sounding a horn/whistle) sounds kind of dumb

Background and Key Points of This Topic

The “Public Opinion Survey on the Japanese Language” is conducted annually by the Agency for Cultural Affairs to track how word usage changes over time. In past years it has published the share of respondents who picked the correct meaning for terms such as “yakubusoku” (originally meaning a role is too modest for one’s ability, but often misused to mean lacking the ability for a role) and “nagare ni sao sasu” (where “sao,” a pole, is a tool for propelling a boat forward — originally meaning to ride the momentum of the moment, but often misunderstood as going against it). In the thread, where to draw the line between a misuse and a new usage that has simply become accepted was a point of debate, with both the view that “if it’s understood, it’s correct” and the view that the original meaning should be preserved represented. On the decline in handwriting, many pointed to typing on computers and smartphones having become the everyday norm, and the flood of personal anecdotes about forgetting how to write simple kanji reflected that reality.

  • Erika Sawajiri Crashes Miyane-ya’s Final Episode — 5ch’s Verdict: ‘Whatever’

Yomiuri TV’s long-running information program “Miyane-ya” aired its 5,134th and final episode on October 2, 2026. To close out a show that had run for more than 16 years since its debut in late July 2006, actress Erika Sawajiri made a surprise appearance. The program looked back on a 2010 stunt in which a director traveled all the way to Spain to try to interview Sawajiri at the apartment where she was staying — only for her to vanish inside in a mere three seconds. Asked why she’d agreed to come on this time, Sawajiri at one point answered with her old signature line, “Whatever” (betsu ni). Reactions on 5ch were split between those who enjoyed the exchange and those questioning the show’s judgment in featuring someone with a past drug conviction.

“Information Live Miyane-ya,” the Yomiuri TV/NTV afternoon wide show hosted by Seiji Miyane (63) (weekdays, 1:55 PM), aired its final episode today, October 2. Erika Sawajiri made a surprise appearance, looking back on a doorstep interview attempt from 16 years ago.

“Information Live Miyane-ya,” which began on July 31, 2006, reached its 5,134th and final broadcast today, October 2. Sixteen years ago, the show had tried to land an exclusive interview with Erika Sawajiri. In 2010, a director traveled to Spain and tracked down the apartment building where she was staying. He managed “three seconds” of contact with her there, but Sawajiri hurried back inside before the interview could happen.

Erika Sawajiri was arrested in 2009 on suspicion of possessing the synthetic drug MDMA and received a guilty verdict (suspended sentence) for violating the Narcotics Control Law. As pointed out within the thread, she was arrested again in November 2019, indicted that December, and sentenced in February 2020 to 1 year and 6 months in prison, suspended for 3 years. At the time, this forced NHK’s Taiga historical drama “Kirin ga Kuru” to reshoot scenes already filmed, sending shockwaves through the industry. What split opinion in the thread was how to judge the TV station’s decision to feature her again given that history. Criticism that “letting bygones be bygones and booking her anyway shows how lax the show is” ran roughly even with more sympathetic takes that “it was sincere of her to come back and personally close out a segment from 16 years ago.” It’s also easy to overlook that the original doorstep interview attempt never actually succeeded — contact lasted only three seconds before she disappeared inside.

  • Memory and SSD Prices Skyrocket, Dealing a Blow to PC Gaming — Switch 2 Comparisons Spark Debate

On 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board, a discussion heated up after memory prices quadrupled and SSD prices tripled, sparking claims that “PC gaming might really be over.” Some pointed to the graphical quality of Nintendo’s Ocarina of Time remake and argued that “a handheld like the Switch 2 is good enough,” while others countered that the PC market is on a completely different scale from the Switch 2. Still others noted that since GPU makers aren’t releasing budget-tier models, even if the number of PC owners doesn’t decline, the number of “people who actually game on PC” might shrink — and the thread split over how seriously to take the impact of the price hikes.

Switch 2 is nothing but a loser platform with a market size that's garbage next to PC's.

    Re: #162
Honestly the cheaper one down there is just better.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The price surge in memory (DRAM) and NAND-type SSDs traces back to AI data centers’ explosive demand straining production lines, driving up global component prices since the second half of 2025. This isn’t unique to PC gaming — it’s part of a broader semiconductor market squeeze that also hits smartphones and home appliances, which runs a bit counter to the thread’s underlying premise that “PC alone is getting the short end of the stick.” Also, when people argue about “market size,” whether PC or the Switch 2 comes out bigger depends heavily on which metric is used — hardware units sold, software units sold, or player population — so the conclusion shifts easily depending on that choice, and part of the thread’s disagreement comes from people talking past each other without aligning on which metric they mean. “Number of people who own a PC” and “number of people who play high-spec games on PC” are two separate metrics, and the point that only the latter might shrink first is a perspective worth keeping in mind when thinking about where the market goes from here.

  • New Oishinbo, the First Full Sequel in 35 Years, Reveals Yamaoka and Yuzan’s Voices

A new teaser trailer and stills for “New Oishinbo,” set to air in 2027, have been released, revealing the voices of Shiro Yamaoka (Yohei Azakami), Yuko Kurita (Hitomi Sasasaki), and Yuzan Kaibara (Akio Otsuka) for the first time. The original manga, written by Tetsu Kariya and illustrated by Akira Hanasaki, has sold a cumulative 135 million copies. On 5ch, opinions clashed between those praising the character designs for moving closer to the art style of the manga’s later chapters and those worried about the thin CG linework and cheap-looking visuals. Some who remember the cultural atmosphere of the ’90s voiced skepticism about whether reviving that mood today even makes sense, and the fact that the broadcaster hasn’t been announced also drew attention.

The previous anime killed what made the original manga good.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The original “Oishinbo” is a food manga written by Tetsu Kariya and illustrated by Akira Hanasaki, a hit series with a cumulative 135 million copies sold. The original anime aired in the ’90s, but as pointed out in the thread, the story was left hanging right at the “Ultimate vs. Supreme” wedding reception showdown, and this new work is positioned as a “full sequel” picking up where that left off. Opinions in the thread were mainly split over the animation: some praised the character designs for moving closer to the art style of the manga’s later chapters, while others worried about the thin CG linework and cheap-looking visuals. There were also comments in the thread claiming that Akio Otsuka, who voices Yuzan Kaibara, is the son of the voice actor who previously played the role — but this is a claim made by thread posters, not an official announcement, and fact-checking it is outside the scope of this article. The broadcaster has not been announced as of this writing, and the growing trend of withholding broadcaster names until the last minute in recent anime releases is also part of why it became a topic of discussion in the thread.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Victory Gundam aired in 1993, more than a decade after the original Mobile Suit Gundam, during a period when the franchise’s popularity had cooled considerably. As the thread notes, the series kept struggling through the following “Another Gundam” era — G Gundam, Wing, and X — and didn’t regain real momentum until SEED lit things up in 2002. The thread also pointed out that V2 Gundam’s reputation as the “strongest unit” doesn’t quite match the show itself, where it struggles in plenty of scenes; much of that reputation comes from games and later reassessments taking on a life of their own. The comments about the flat-looking animation, meanwhile, are a long-running fan in-joke about how rough the production schedule was at the time — not a jab at any specific individual.

Are people still watching that trash show?

    Re: #22
Same poster — this one's ID also ends in 'd' just like Re: #3, right
    So obvious lol 🤣
    5AnonymousOct 2, 2026 15:44
    Has Rem come back yet?
    8AnonymousOct 2, 2026 15:45
    Re: #5
She came back, but then it got retconned so it wasn't actually a 'Return by Death'
    14AnonymousOct 2, 2026 15:49
If Subaru turns out not to actually be Flügel, then Shaula's whole courtship arc becomes a joke
    24AnonymousOct 2, 2026 15:56
    Re: #14
I couldn't get emotionally invested in Shaula at all
    18AnonymousOct 2, 2026 15:52
Mushoku Tensei's more fun anyway, so whatever
    21AnonymousOct 2, 2026 15:53
    Re: #18
I don't watch Mushoku Tensei — it brings back memories of dropping 130,000 yen on a slot machine set to 'setting 6' (supposedly the best odds)

Go get reincarnated in another world already, trash

    They're both good, come on

Re:Zero was the first 'Naro-kei' anime (the web-novel-style isekai genre) I ever dropped.
To be precise, I actually dropped it twice since I gave it a second chance and still couldn't handle it.
First time was the scene where Subaru gets beaten up in the arena, then says something he doesn't even mean to Emilia in the infirmary.
Second time was the trial scene where Subaru meets his parents.
That's when I realized this just isn't an anime adults can handle.

Lol, something really hit a nerve with somebody
    37AnonymousOct 2, 2026 16:03
Guess somebody gets mad when you tell the truth

Your ID suffix isn't hidden, you know
    38AnonymousOct 2, 2026 16:03
Season 4's animation was way too garbage

    Feel that
    Julius had me cracking up

    Re: #38
    It just looked kinda cheap

    Re: #38
Forget the animation quality — isn't Subaru's face just creepy in Season 4?
    Something's off with his eyes
    39AnonymousOct 2, 2026 16:04
Such a huge quality gap even in a scene they were supposedly putting real effort into

Season 1 was better across the board — character design, direction, animation, all of it

Yeah, this is an anime where everything peaked in Season 1

    Re: #57
Guess you really liked that phrase I came up with lol
    67AnonymousOct 2, 2026 16:12
Personally I think Slime is way less interesting than Re:Zero, but it never gets talked about at all
    73AnonymousOct 2, 2026 16:14
    Re: #67
I dropped Slime by Season 2
I'm done with the stale 'recruit more allies, aren't I amazing' formula

    Re: #67
Even in the anti-fan threads, hardly anyone's actually read all the way through the source novels
Every single time, someone shows up thinking Yuuki is the final boss

The guy with the ID ending in 'd' is having a meltdown for some reason

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World is a popular anime that’s gone through multiple seasons, and what sparked discussion this time was simply the fact that there’s been no Season 5 production announcement so far. Looking back, Season 4 was also announced right as Season 3 ended, and it still took a full year after that announcement before broadcasts began — so the thread pointed out that the current delay might just mean the announcement itself is late, not that the show has been cancelled. At the same time, complaints about Season 4’s animation and character designs fueled the view that ‘Season 1 was the peak,’ mixing genuine opinions about the show’s quality with frustration over the production schedule and announcement timing. Comparisons to other isekai anime like Mushoku Tensei and That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime also came up, broadening the discussion to the genre as a whole. Readers should be careful not to jump to the conclusion that ‘no announcement’ means ‘the sequel has been cancelled.’
