Whisky advice for highballs hits 5ch: ‘If you’re used to rock-bottom whisky, Kaku counts as premium’

The story

A thread titled “Recommend me a whisky that’s great as a highball, neat, or on the rocks” popped up on 5ch’s Nandemo Jikkyo G board. The poster said they only knew Black Nikka and Jack Daniel’s, and replies poured in with everything from standards like Ballantine’s, Jim Beam, and Maker’s Mark to Chivas Regal’s Mizunara 12 Year.

Two points sparked debate: whether making a highball with expensive whisky is a “waste,” and how to rate Suntory’s Kaku bottle. Because Kaku strips out character to appeal to everyone, it’s often dismissed as “underwhelming” — though some called it “a great-value premium whisky,” and opinions split down the middle.

I've only ever bought Black Nikka and Jack Daniel's, usually just mixed with cola.
But cutting it with lemon-flavored sparkling water? That was actually great.
5AnonymousOct 20, 2026 22:07
Jack Daniel's Apple is pretty versatile.
Though it loses to Honey neat.
29AnonymousOct 20, 2026 22:24
Re: #5
What about Jim Beam?
6AnonymousOct 20, 2026 22:08
Ballantine's is cheap and good neat too.
If you're mixing it, just use whatever you like.
30AnonymousOct 20, 2026 22:24
Re: #6
Thanks. Is it a safe bet?
7AnonymousOct 20, 2026 22:08
Jack Daniel's is trash because the quality's inconsistent.
Take a lesson from Iichiko's reliability (a popular Japanese shochu brand), you clown.

Re: #7
Wait, really?! Had no idea.
10AnonymousOct 20, 2026 22:09
Stay away from the dirt-cheap Japanese ones (Rin, "Kōshū," etc).

Beyond that it's all down to taste — you'll have to find your own favorite.

❌ 口州
⭕ 甲州 (same reading, wrong kanji — fixing the typo)
32AnonymousOct 20, 2026 22:25
Re: #10
So Japanese-made ones are iffy? That old guy on Twitter only ever brings up Suntory Kaku.
16AnonymousOct 20, 2026 22:11
Using an expensive whisky like Scotch for a highball is way too much of a waste.
19AnonymousOct 20, 2026 22:12
Re: #16
It's a waste, but it's delicious.
38AnonymousOct 20, 2026 22:26
Re: #16
Is there really that much of a difference?
22AnonymousOct 20, 2026 22:15
Mystery.

No idea which one, but one of these should hit the spot. Don't know the prices.
39AnonymousOct 20, 2026 22:27
Re: #22
What even is this…
27AnonymousOct 20, 2026 22:23
Chivas Regal's Mizunara 12 Year is seriously good. I'll let you in on it as a special favor.
42AnonymousOct 20, 2026 22:29
Re: #27
It's probably sold at the supermarket.
44AnonymousOct 20, 2026 22:30
It's right in the middle of the first photo.
Just trust me and give it a try.
47AnonymousOct 20, 2026 22:31
Re: #44
Would that fit the thread title?
45AnonymousOct 20, 2026 22:30
Re: #39
It's a blended whisky.
Back in the day it was a joke-tier bottle around 5,000 yen, but since it's a limited domestic release from 20 years ago, the price has gone crazy now.
48AnonymousOct 20, 2026 22:31
Re: #45
"Mystery" really is a mystery LOLLLLLL
46AnonymousOct 20, 2026 22:30
Re: #34
Bourbon, malt, Irish, Scotch — I don't really get what any of these mean.

All I know is I keep seeing some cool bald guy in movies knocking back Irish or Scotch and looking like it's amazing.
49AnonymousOct 20, 2026 22:31
Re: #46
Probably Irish, going by the peaty smell.
59AnonymousOct 20, 2026 22:36
Re: #46
Honestly, if there's a word you don't get, just Google it first.

Bourbon, Irish, and Scotch are whisky categories based on region of origin. Just understand roughly that each region has its own flavor tendencies.

Malt refers to the malted barley used as a whisky ingredient.
50AnonymousOct 20, 2026 22:32
If you're fine with sweetness like a Jack and Coke, I'd just recommend bourbon straight up.

Something like I.W. Harper or Maker's Mark — those are good no matter how you drink them.
53AnonymousOct 20, 2026 22:33
Re: #50
I've been mixing Jack Daniel's or Black Nikka with Coca-Cola Zero.
69AnonymousOct 20, 2026 22:38
Re: #53
Which cola you mix it with is just personal preference, honestly doesn't matter.

I figured you were fine with that distinctive bourbon sweetness, so I recommended Re: #50.
58AnonymousOct 20, 2026 22:35
I hate this whole "making a highball with good whisky is a waste" mentality.
61AnonymousOct 20, 2026 22:36
Re: #58
A highball made with good whisky really is delicious, right?
62AnonymousOct 20, 2026 22:36
Hadn't asked everyone yet, but I went and bought the cheap Black Nikka anyway. The design's changed, huh.

74AnonymousOct 20, 2026 22:39
Re: #62
I never buy the small bottles so I wouldn't know. It's gone in a day, so the trash piles up.
71AnonymousOct 20, 2026 22:39
How did people end up putting Kaku on such a pedestal?
Is it really as good as they say?
76AnonymousOct 20, 2026 22:40
Re: #71
Probably because it's reliably decent.
My dad used to drink it, so I just can't get into it — it reminds me of him.
78AnonymousOct 20, 2026 22:42
Re: #71
It's got kind of an "old man" image, so I deliberately don't want to buy it.

From what I see online — YouTube and the like — something like The Busker seems like a safe pick.
89AnonymousOct 20, 2026 22:46
Re: #71
You end up like that if you drink Torys every day (a cheap, everyday Suntory whisky).
95AnonymousOct 20, 2026 22:48
Re: #89
So is Kaku just cheap and lame, or is that not really true? There's way too much depth and too many varieties, I can't keep up~
103AnonymousOct 20, 2026 22:51
Re: #95
If you're used to drinking rock-bottom whisky, Kaku looks like a great-value premium whisky.
107AnonymousOct 20, 2026 22:52
Re: #95
Whether it's lame or not aside — it's a whisky thoroughly stripped of character to appeal to everyone. So the lack of a distinct flavor often gets read as "underwhelming."
101AnonymousOct 20, 2026 22:50
I like Riku (a Nikka Japanese whisky), and I realized I like that vanilla-ish flavor, so I figured bourbon would suit me — but there's no such thing as dirt-cheap bourbon, huh.
104AnonymousOct 20, 2026 22:51
Re: #101
Bourbon tends to run expensive.

…φ(・ω・`)メモメモ (jotting that down)

Re: #101
Jim Beam's cheap though.

Background and key points of this discussion

Whisky is categorized by region of origin into types like Scotch, bourbon, and Irish, while “malt” refers to the malted barley used as an ingredient — a separate axis of classification from region. Suntory’s Kaku bottle, which split opinion in the thread, is designed as a blended whisky built for easy drinkability, so compared to whiskies with strong personality, its “lack of character” gets read both as “underwhelming” and as “an easy-to-handle, great-value option.” Whether it’s right to turn an expensive whisky into a highball also has no industry-standard answer — it’s easy to mistake this for more than just a matter of personal taste. And since bourbon’s ingredients tend to bring out a strong natural sweetness, recommending it to people used to sweeter drinks like cola mixes was also a practical point.
