On 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board, an image apparently showing a mother’s social media post declaring she’ll “absolutely never let my kid turn into a chii-gyu” was posted, sparking discussion over her strict game-restricting parenting policy. “Chii-gyu” is a 5ch-born internet slang term for someone with a stereotypically “nerdy” look and vibe, and the thread’s title is itself a jab suggesting her approach could backfire. In the thread, commenters repeatedly warned that an all-out ban tends to breed rebellion, leading to isolation from friends or a total loss of self-control once the kid becomes an adult, with some arguing the real problem isn’t the ban itself but the “all or nothing” mindset behind it.

Looks like this anti-game era isn't ending anytime soon

This is exactly the pattern where everyone decides 'if we invite him his annoying mom tags along, let's just exclude him'
9AnonymousOct 20, 2026 12:28
Guess she'll start smashing phones and Switches eventually
11AnonymousOct 20, 2026 12:28
It's the kind of people who turn out bad that get drawn to games in the first place, so just being interested in games is basically game over for you
12AnonymousOct 20, 2026 12:30
Banning games just makes them more alluring, you know.
When I was banned from gaming, the most fun I ever had with games was in that window — my parents left for work at 8:10 and I left for school at 8:25.
Those 15 minutes in between were unbelievably fun.

Re: #12
LMAO your school's super close by
59AnonymousOct 20, 2026 14:41
Re: #12
Why were you banned in the first place?
13AnonymousOct 20, 2026 12:31
Yeah, I get it.
I grew up not playing games in middle/high school myself.
Building social skills during that period is probably important.
But the reason I didn't play games wasn't because my parents restricted me.
It was simply because the people around me weren't playing either.
Parental restrictions don't really have that much power.
There are always plenty of workarounds.
14AnonymousOct 20, 2026 12:33
This is exactly how kids end up getting left out
15AnonymousOct 20, 2026 12:35
Still, whatever the method, at least she's trying to raise her kid properly — that's better than nothing.
My friend's wife hands her 4-year-old a smartphone to shut them up, and spends the whole time on her own phone.
According to the kid, all three meals a day are frozen yaki-onigiri (grilled rice balls).
To put it mildly, that's abuse.
17AnonymousOct 20, 2026 12:36
Well, it's still better than handing over a phone and neglecting them completely
18AnonymousOct 20, 2026 12:37
You should be lamenting the fact that your own kid doesn't get a serotonin boost just from being around you
19AnonymousOct 20, 2026 12:37
Games are the original dopamine hobby after all.
I get where she's coming from, but it's already too late.
That kid's head is probably filled with nothing but pent-up frustration over wanting to play games.
21AnonymousOct 20, 2026 12:40
The harder you crack down on this stuff, the more it backfires
22AnonymousOct 20, 2026 12:40
Balance matters in everything.
If things stay like this, this kid's going to cut off all contact the moment they're independent.
23AnonymousOct 20, 2026 12:42
She should be regretting that she couldn't give birth to a kid who just isn't into games
24AnonymousOct 20, 2026 12:42
At least give the kid some other form of entertainment to replace games
27AnonymousOct 20, 2026 12:48
Just don't let them play Nintendo games
That alone should set your mind at ease
28AnonymousOct 20, 2026 12:49
Between someone who only plays games and someone who only does sports,
the latter's definitely the one who turns out more messed up
29AnonymousOct 20, 2026 12:50
Parents who keep this up usually end up getting cut off by their kids eventually
31AnonymousOct 20, 2026 12:51
Isn't confiscating someone else's kid's phone basically just theft?
34AnonymousOct 20, 2026 12:52
This is textbook 'gets excluded by friends' material
35AnonymousOct 20, 2026 12:53
At least teach the kid to cook.
Guys who can cook make for better husbands.
36AnonymousOct 20, 2026 12:56
Being able to cook doesn't actually make a guy popular.
It's only a status symbol when an already-attractive guy can cook.
38AnonymousOct 20, 2026 13:01
Letting them watch TikTok on their phone is actually better for their emotional education than letting them play games.
You can learn all kinds of knowledge from around the world, and it's a great reference for how to communicate.
There's hardly a better teaching material out there.
41AnonymousOct 20, 2026 13:07
Stupid parents can't even realize they're stupid, so they clamp down on their kids way too hard,
and end up getting betrayed once the kid grows up lol because they're stupid lololol
Maybe they should study up on becoming a smart adult (parent) themselves first lolololololol
42AnonymousOct 20, 2026 13:14
A parent who secretly follows you around is just a creep
43AnonymousOct 20, 2026 13:18
Whether it's snacks or games, there's a pattern where strict parental restriction leads to losing all self-control once you're an adult and finally free,
but I guess she can't imagine that happening.
44AnonymousOct 20, 2026 13:22
Honestly all you really need to do is stop them from mouth-breathing as a kid, live in a house with a spacious bedroom if possible, and cut down on dust and mold in the living space to lower the odds of rhinitis.

Parenting Quiz: My Angel (a '90s Japanese game show parody)
What will Shohei Ohtani's batting average be next year?
49AnonymousOct 20, 2026 13:53
If games are off-limits then she should quit social media too.
But rejecting communication tools entirely is impossible in this day and age, right?
51AnonymousOct 20, 2026 13:57
Suppressing and banning things just causes a massive backlash, you know
54AnonymousOct 20, 2026 14:04
Isn't this the one issue where the PlayStation camp and Switch camp can finally form an alliance?
56AnonymousOct 20, 2026 14:14
"If we invite Yamada his mom comes too, so don't you dare invite him"
57AnonymousOct 20, 2026 14:22
Households where the parents are into a cult are probably like this too.
Really feel bad for the kid.
58AnonymousOct 20, 2026 14:33
I would not want to be raised by a parent who uses a term like 'dopamine brat'!
64AnonymousOct 20, 2026 15:46
Gaming in middle/high school basically comes down to two outcomes, right?
Either you naturally grow out of it, or that's when things really kick off.
Supervision gets looser and your allowance goes up, so it's fine either way.

Re: #64
If you're in a club activity you inevitably get home late and just eat and sleep anyway.
That said, if it's a cultural club or a more laid-back sports club,
people were playing Monster Hunter or Mario Kart in the clubroom or classroom.
Background and key points of this discussion
Worth noting: “chii-gyu” originated on 5ch and spread as a derogatory slang term for someone with a stereotypically unpopular, nerdy-looking face, and this thread proceeds on that premise. The thread split into two camps: those who argued that an all-out ban invites rebellion and isolation from friends, and those who argued the real issue isn’t the ban itself but the extreme “all or nothing” mindset behind it. The original post appears to be an unverified social media image, and it doesn’t definitively identify any specific family or individual. Some replies include anecdotes about acquaintances’ households, but these are all unverified hearsay, so they’re best read as general commentary rather than claims about any specific person.
