The story
A sighting report claiming that the PlayStation section on the 6th floor of Yodobashi Camera in Akihabara has been converted into an arcade-style corner stocked with crane games went viral on X (formerly Twitter). With the PS5’s packaged (disc) version confirmed to end sales this coming January, some see this as a related effect. On a 5ch thread, visitors clashed over conflicting eyewitness accounts of whether the Nintendo and Xbox sections on the same floor had actually shrunk too, sparking debate.
The PlayStation corner on the 6th floor of Yodobashi Akihabara has somehow turned into an arcade corner…
The ripple effects of PS5 packaged version sales stopping this coming January have hit #YodobashiAkihabara…😄👟💨 The PS and Xbox sections have already shrunk by half at this point😆👀 There are even reports noting an insane drop in PS software sales volume…👀 Looks like Nintendo Switch’s reign is set to continue for years to come😄 By the way, the #Aikatsu (girls’ arcade card game) machine seems to have been played out completely — it’s out of cards

What people said
Akiba was the one pushing it hardest, and now look at the state it's in
When I went to look at the start of this month, the Switch section had actually gotten bigger though
Re: #11
Re: #23
↑This is reality
PlayStation: shrunk
Xbox: shrunk
Nintendo: shrunk
PC: expanded
PS6 is basically stillborn before it's even born lol. They probably won't even get shelf space for the console
Yeah yeah, that's an 'Akkatsu' moment too (a 5ch meme term mocking bad news/decline, punning on the card game Aikatsu)
How exactly are they planning to sell the console anyway? Made-to-order production, maybe?
No way, no way. Nintendo fanboys ('nishi') always rush to start pounding the celebration mochi. Guess they're Nintendo's drum-mochi sycophants (a pun on 'taikomochi,' meaning yes-man)
…Pounding mochi? Huh?
Pound, pound! (the sound of mochi-pounding)
I'll take kinako mochi (soybean-flour-coated mochi), please
Guess it's mochi-pounding time lol
Wonder what'll happen once Amazon drops the packaged version too — will they just sell the console alone?
Yodobashi itself IS one of the big retail chains lol
Happinet treats Switch as a valued client, so they'll protect that turf. PlayStation, on the other hand, is basically no longer a business partner once discs go away, so they can crush it without hesitation. And it's not just Happinet — plenty of companies are flipping from valued clients to business rivals once discs are discontinued, so brace yourself
PlayStation's just too weak at this point, it's already dropped out of the race

Tough luck having to rely on nothing but a misleading graph
Starting next year is when it really counts — how the numbers shift after the PS brand collapses
If anything, it's grown
Switching IDs over and over doesn't fool anyone, you know
Photography should be allowed at Yodobashi Akihabara, so go take a photo right now
Background and Key Points of This Discussion
Sony has officially announced that the packaged version of the PS5 will end sales this coming January, signaling a shift in focus toward digital downloads. Since retail game sections allocate floor space based on console and package sales volume, it stands to reason that shelf space would shrink as packaged distribution declines. What split opinion on the thread, however, was whether the Nintendo and Xbox sections had actually shrunk as well — visitors’ eyewitness accounts conflicted, and no consistent photos or official statements have confirmed it either way. Since a store’s layout can look different depending on when you visit and what angle you shoot from, it would be premature to draw firm conclusions about the industry’s overall balance of power from this sighting alone.
