CC2 President Matsuyama: ‘Twice in 30 Years, We’ve Had a Project Canceled or Development Reassigned’ — Remark Sparks Discussion

The story

Hiroshi Matsuyama, president of game development studio CyberConnect2 (CC2), sparked discussion on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board after remarking in a Famitsu interview that “in our 30-year history, there have been exactly two occasions where the same client canceled a project or reassigned development to another company.” Phrases in the remark such as “highly detailed artwork” and “a building that looked somewhat familiar” led many to speculate he was referring to the development shake-up around Square Enix’s FINAL FANTASY VII Remake. The thread split between posters criticizing Square Enix’s track record of harshly cutting contractors, and those defending it as simply par for the course in contract development.

To be clear, this is simply something that, looking back over CyberConnect2’s 30-year history, has happened exactly twice.

Our assistant staff drew an incredibly high-detail rendering of a building that might look somewhat familiar, so it may seem like the client in question was the company behind that building — but I’m sure that’s just your imagination (please, just don’t think about it too hard).

As for the “canceled project,” it was essentially an unannounced title, so that’s information only the parties involved could possibly know.

Square Enix should say something too.

Re: #2
Square Enix is the one who did this to Tose, so they're not really in a position to talk.
26AnonymousOct 19, 2026 12:43
Re: #20
Square Enix farms the work out to contractors, then stiffs them every chance it gets, Tose-style — and that's how you rack up a ¥40 billion extraordinary loss.

Just imagine how much trouble they caused.
4AnonymousOct 19, 2026 12:23
It's always weird seeing a subcontractor act like some big corporation.
6AnonymousOct 19, 2026 12:23
Matsuyama should take a page from Level-5's Hino.
7AnonymousOct 19, 2026 12:24
Development reassigned = FF7 Remake
Project canceled = ???

Wonder what else Square Enix had commissioned from them.
Was the canceled one some FF7-related spin-off too?
8AnonymousOct 19, 2026 12:24
That's the contract they signed — it cuts both ways.

Re: #8
Looking at the Tose situation, there's a decent chance Square Enix doesn't actually handle this stuff properly.
There's no shortage of horror stories between Square Enix and its developers.
9AnonymousOct 19, 2026 12:24
Well, if you're contracted to develop something and you don't hit the client's bar, of course you get cut. That happens everywhere, not just in gaming.
81AnonymousOct 19, 2026 15:32
Re: #9
Even so, when you look at what actually shipped… makes you wonder what their 'bar' even was.
10AnonymousOct 19, 2026 12:24
Nah, twice sounds low if anything — studios that mainly do contract work probably deal with that way more often.
11AnonymousOct 19, 2026 12:24
That's just par for the course in product development. What do you think manufacturing is like?
12AnonymousOct 19, 2026 12:25
Even Capcom's 'Oka-chan' (a Capcom developer's nickname) says it happens to him constantly.
13AnonymousOct 19, 2026 12:26
Classic Piroshi (Matsuyama's nickname), just trying to brag about how great he is.
14AnonymousOct 19, 2026 12:27
The game industry is soft and lax as hell. Have you never had a real job?
16AnonymousOct 19, 2026 12:29
If you don't like that, go raise your own funding and self-publish.
17AnonymousOct 19, 2026 12:30
Jumped to the end: turns out it's somehow Nintendo's fault.
19AnonymousOct 19, 2026 12:32
Re: #17
You're hallucinating, you lunatic.
18AnonymousOct 19, 2026 12:31
CC2's stuff is pretty weak outside of CG work, so there are probably times they just don't meet the client's expectations and get cut.
24AnonymousOct 19, 2026 12:34
Re: #18
Wasn't the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: All Star Battle CG that Araki Hirohiko praised outsourced though?
22AnonymousOct 19, 2026 12:33
Talk about the FF7 Remake thing already.
According to the leaks, CC2 got cut because their quality was too low.
23AnonymousOct 19, 2026 12:33
That's because your own studio churns out garbage games left and right.
25AnonymousOct 19, 2026 12:39
Sure, they got cut from FF7 Remake, but at least they still got proper credit in the staff roll.
27AnonymousOct 19, 2026 12:45
Two in 30 years is on the low side, honestly. Tose, for example, probably has projects canceled constantly.
28AnonymousOct 19, 2026 12:45
Well, he's the one who actually knows firsthand how scary the game industry is, so his words carry real weight.
84AnonymousOct 19, 2026 16:38
Re: #28
Between this and FromSoftware, game companies are brutal…
31AnonymousOct 19, 2026 12:47
It'd be rough if the FF7R character models were just recycled from what CC2 made.
32AnonymousOct 19, 2026 12:48
Yeah, I did see that CC2 got dropped from FF7 Remake.
35AnonymousOct 19, 2026 12:51
Re: #1
Is this really that scary a story?
40AnonymousOct 19, 2026 12:59
Re: #35
Some companies go under over stuff like this.
43AnonymousOct 19, 2026 13:01
With long-term contract work, if you get cut partway through, all the resources you'd already committed in anticipation of the rest of the project become a straight loss.
45AnonymousOct 19, 2026 13:06
Re: #43
No wonder Director Kojima was furious.

And then getting an acquisition offer from Sony on top of that is just awful.
48AnonymousOct 19, 2026 13:22
Re: #26
No, it's not about stiffing anyone — the loss comes precisely because they did pay for development up to that point. The cancellation causes huge headaches because of the schedule gap it leaves behind.
Besides, if they were actually stiffing people, they'd go bankrupt.
62AnonymousOct 19, 2026 14:20
Re: #48
And Square Enix actually did exactly that two years ago.
92AnonymousOct 19, 2026 17:40
Isn't this just a case of that particular client not trusting them very much?
95AnonymousOct 19, 2026 17:48
Re: #92
Why did they even have CC2 work on FF7 Remake in the first place?
96AnonymousOct 19, 2026 17:49
Re: #95
They were only entrusted with partial support work.
97AnonymousOct 19, 2026 17:52
Re: #95
Probably they thought, 'maybe they've learned their lesson by now?' But when they actually gave them the work, nothing had changed — their ego had just inflated even more — so they figured this wasn't going to work.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

CyberConnect2 is a major contract development studio known for work on the .hack series and the CG for the JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure games; this remark comes from a Famitsu interview. It’s worth noting that President Hiroshi Matsuyama never named a specific title himself — the theory that he was referring to FF7 Remake spread purely as speculation among 5ch posters. In contract development, it’s hardly unusual for a client to cancel a project or switch developers at its own discretion. The thread’s central divide was between those who argued Square Enix is especially harsh in how it cuts contractors, and those who countered that this is simply something that can happen to anyone who takes on contract work.
