PS5’s Real-World Power Rivals an RTX 4060? Console War Erupts on 5ch

The story

Sparked by a post on X (formerly Twitter), a debate broke out on 5ch’s Hardware & Industry (console wars) board over which GPU the PS5’s real-world performance actually matches. Initially pegged as “equivalent to an RTX 2060,” opinion shifted toward “RTX 4060 or RX 6600 level” after a 3DMark Fire Strike benchmark (roughly 16,800 points) was run on SteamOS using a leaked BC-250 board — the same chip platform used in the PS5. However, some pointed out that the BC-250’s core count and clock speed differ from actual PS5 specs, and opinions were split on how to fairly compare hardware that lacks ray tracing and DLSS support.

Lol (“grass,” 5ch slang for laughing)

People comparing PS5 and PC performance really need to stop going off spec sheets alone.

At least try it on real hardware before making claims.

In the PlayStation universe, performance genuinely just keeps climbing, no joke, lol
4AnonymousOct 18, 2026 15:41
Guess they've stopped saying RTX 5070 Ti, huh lol
5AnonymousOct 18, 2026 15:42
Wasn't it an RTX 2060 at first?
Guess it's like the PS2 — the performance figures just keep climbing over time?

Did someone do something awful to you?

Re: #5
Right here — *taps the '4060' label*
6AnonymousOct 18, 2026 15:42
If it's well optimized, it might feel that way.
Load times are fast too.
9AnonymousOct 18, 2026 15:44
Apparently the leaked BC-250 board (just the PS5's chip, nothing else) running SteamOS scores 16,800 in the 3DMark Fire Strike benchmark.

That puts it on par with an RX 6600 — basically an RTX 2060 with the AI cores stripped out.
The RTX 2060 Super scores 18,000, so it still doesn't reach that.

Re: #9
Hold on, the BC-250 isn't running at full spec —
it's got fewer cores and a lower clock speed.
Factor that in and a 6600 XT is about the ceiling!
10AnonymousOct 18, 2026 15:44
Can't do ray tracing.
Can't do DLSS.
Can't do frame generation.

But sure, it's "RTX 4060 equivalent," aaaaargh
11AnonymousOct 18, 2026 15:46
This is all happening now because Capcom or Square Enix basically called it mid-spec and a development bottleneck outright.
12AnonymousOct 18, 2026 15:46
They probably hate comparing it to the 20-series because it'd expose just how ancient it really is lol
15AnonymousOct 18, 2026 15:49
Optimization boost! Optimization boost!

Seriously, lol
16AnonymousOct 18, 2026 15:49
Even official channels are pushing this line, and the fanboys falling right in step behind them — model believers, truly.
17AnonymousOct 18, 2026 15:53
The fact that people are even debating "PS5 or PC" as a purchase choice should already set off alarm bells.
18AnonymousOct 18, 2026 15:54
It's a tradition going back to the PS2 — by this logic, today's "PS2" is more powerful than the PS4.
19AnonymousOct 18, 2026 15:55
It is true that a firmware update after launch actually improved frame rates.

Re: #13
No, that number's from unlocking the CUs and overclocking it — it's pushed well past what's actually sold as a retail PS5.
Outside of Fire Strike it just crashes from thermal throttling.
32AnonymousOct 18, 2026 16:10
Re: #22
Unlock all 40 CUs and the clock drops to like 1.1GHz lol
Is there even an article where someone swapped the heatsink and ran deafening fans to push it past 2.2GHz?
33AnonymousOct 18, 2026 16:10
This is way too dumb to even be entertaining.

Being this blind is actually kind of entertaining.
PS fanboys have always been the funniest ones lol

Apparently the PS5 has evolved enough to match a ¥1 million PC (roughly $7,000).

I've spent about ¥1 million total on my gaming PC, and the PS5 still ended up being my main machine anyway…

Honestly, the difference in visuals on PC is the kind of thing you have to squint to notice — you're way better off putting that money into a good TV and good audio instead.

Your eyes probably rotted from staring at 30fps.
43AnonymousOct 18, 2026 16:26
Why do the new characters pop like that?
57AnonymousOct 18, 2026 16:48
Since the RTX 4060 is an entry-level card with a narrower memory bus,
its performance craters when doing native 4K rendering without DLSS or anything like that.
Under those specific conditions the PS5 might technically compete,
but winning only after tying the 4060's hands behind its back… so what?

And looking ahead, with DLSS5 support planned for the whole 4000-series, the 4060 still has way more headroom to grow anyway.

Re: #57
The 5060 got a big jump in memory bandwidth, but that didn't translate into some massive performance leap either.
If you're running 4K you basically need DLSS anyway, so you don't need that much memory bandwidth to begin with.

The Xbox fanboys ("buu-chan," 5ch slang for Xbox fans) are weirdly riled up.
Guess it hits a little too close to home~

Re: #59
Well sure, if a PS5 from years ago gets called equal to a 4060, that's gonna rattle people.
Compare it to the Switch 2 and it's a whole different level of brutal lol

Re: #64
Nice failed sockpuppeting lol
69AnonymousOct 18, 2026 16:58
You shouldn't compare it to something that's barely even sold.
If you want a fair comparison today, it should be against an entry card like the RTX 5050.
85AnonymousOct 18, 2026 17:32
Re: #69
Score-wise it's only about half a 5050 though, right?
74AnonymousOct 18, 2026 17:04
There was a post going viral a while back saying that if you want to compete with PC, you're better off investing in an OLED TV.
77AnonymousOct 18, 2026 17:11
Re: #74
That's the one!
The picture quality genuinely looks like a different system.
78AnonymousOct 18, 2026 17:12
Honestly, OLED is just overpowered for PC too.

Re: #78
Right now I've got a 27-inch WQHD LCD, but I'm thinking of going 32-inch next.
Which do you think is better, 4K OLED or WQHD OLED?
79AnonymousOct 18, 2026 17:16
They could just brush it off as "some random guy lying, nothing to do with us,"
but for some reason they defend it instead, and that's what digs the hole deeper.

Re: #79
It's that thing where creepy otaku types ("kimo-ota") act buddy-buddy with someone they've never even met and jump in to defend them, which just makes it creepier.
What is that about, seriously?
83AnonymousOct 18, 2026 17:28
I'm playing The Witcher 3 remaster on a base PS5 and it's holding a stable
4K60fps.
If I ran it on my 4060 PC, the fans would probably be screaming.

WOOOOOAH!!!

Background and Points of Contention

It’s true that the PS5 saw performance gains from firmware updates after launch — Gigazine reported on this back in 2021. However, the figures at the center of this latest discussion come from a 3DMark Fire Strike benchmark run on SteamOS using a leaked BC-250 board, which carries the same APU as the PS5. Thread commenters pointed out that this board was tested with core counts and clock speeds altered from actual PS5 specifications. In other words, the BC-250’s numbers don’t directly represent PS5 performance, and depending on which conditions are used as the baseline, the verdict swings between “equivalent to an RTX 2060” and “equivalent to an RTX 4060.” On top of that, since the RTX 4060 used for comparison supports ray tracing, DLSS, and frame generation, opinions were also split on how much a simple raw rasterization comparison actually reflects the real gaming experience.
