The story
A thread on 5ch’s Console/Industry (“Geha”) board sparked debate over Switch2 and PS5 sales figures. The thread’s creator posted monthly sales numbers — 448,500 units in March, 241,600 in April, and 634,800 in May — and pointed out that momentum had slowed following May’s price hike. In response, replies pushed back, noting that Switch2 has kept beating the PS5 in the most recent weekly rankings, and that September sales have actually picked up as the post-Obon slump reversed, making it too early to call this a “slowdown” based on monthly data alone. The thread turned into a back-and-forth comparison war citing VGChartz estimates alongside Sony and Nintendo’s official quarterly earnings figures, with opinions split over how momentum will hold up heading into the year-end shopping season and next year’s lineup of major titles.
What people said
April: 241,600 units
May: 634,800 units (#price hike of ¥10,000 on 5/25)
Isn't that a problem though, since it's losing to PS5 globally?

And that's comparing its 7th year to PS5's 2nd year.
The PS5 launched in Nov 2026, so this is actually its 6th year.
Correction — launched in Nov 2020, so this is its 6th year.
It's only about 1.5 million units behind, so it won't take long — especially with Christmas sales coming.
The PS5's already got it beat…

The first few years after the PS5 launched in 2020 aren't a fair comparison — there were COVID lockdowns, supply chains were a mess, and masks were in short supply, so there wasn't even proper stock available to sell~
Also, since everyone knows the price hike is the cause, they could fix this easily if they wanted to.
Basically, if they bundle a game or something to bring the effective price down, it'll start selling again.
The reason Nintendo isn't rushing to do that comes down to one thing: "But we're still outselling the PS5, right?"
In the first place, the moment they raised the price to ¥60,000 when the PS5 is only ¥55,000, that was them saying "There's no real rival, so we can take our time" — in other words, [they're not taking the competition seriously].
There's a theory that all of Switch1's active users have already finished migrating over to Switch2 —
what do you think of that?
I'm not foolish enough to gloat using VGChartz numbers that can be off by 40%.
Their target is "we're not chasing unit sales" lol
With proper sources, it's an absolute blowout…

That's probably just from the good sales before the price hike plus the last-minute rush-buying right before it.
it's just going to be Switch2 selling well indefinitely.

Lol, not a single one of those even hit a million units.
Is this self-own?
And during the year-end/New Year shopping season, Switch games end up outselling almost all of those anyway.
Meanwhile, the only PlayStation title on that list that sells during the year-end rush is CoD, and only because it's on a fire sale.
Being dependent on third parties makes it even tougher.
Aside from Bandai Namco and Konami — companies with old loyalty ties to PlayStation — pretty much everyone else has fled to Switch2.
That's an awfully rough hand to fight with.
Yeah yeah, go take a look at Re: #51
Right, right lol
Mr. PS5 sold a whopping 3.1 million units in 6 months, after all lol
At this rate, the estimate is that roughly half of Switch1's user base is just going to vanish somewhere.
The PS5's such trash it only sold 3.1 million units in 6 months, huh?
Sales pace picks up once popular titles come out, so there's no problem there.
Even when they port games originally made for PC/PS5/Xbox over to Switch2, they don't sell all that well.
It doesn't have that "anything you release will sell" vibe that Switch1 had.
That's because they completely ignored the Switch [1] the whole time.
If they think they can just drop something out of nowhere and have it sell without ever building a loyal customer base, that kind of thinking is worse than even Falcom's or Nippon Ichi's.
PlayStation getting excited about beating Xbox.
Want to declare the war over? Be my guest.
If it were a narrow win that'd be one thing, but Switch2 is beating the PS5 by a pretty wide margin —
in both hardware and software.
I think there's a good chance Nintendo is currently offering some kind of compensation to get third parties
to port their flagship titles over, just to build momentum.
That was just the post-Obon rebound, that's all.
What's actually surprising is the PS5 — even after the GTA6 trailer dropped, it still can't recover from its 4-digit slump and is still flatlining.
The reason OP deliberately used monthly figures instead of weekly ones in Re: #1 is probably because Switch2's sales have been climbing the last few weeks, and that doesn't suit their narrative lol (´・ω・`)
Even if it's Ocarina of Time, if they're just glossing things over with a remake, isn't that going to flop hard?
Well, there's no real rival anyway, and it's obvious the real action starts next year once the new Kirby game, Pokémon, and Xenoblade come out.
That said, it looks like they're putting quite a bit of effort into it, so I don't think they're just glossing things over.
Background and key points of this discussion
VGChartz, the source cited in the thread, is an unofficial estimate site, and its numbers can diverge from actual sales — worth keeping in mind. On the other hand, posts #41 and #51 cite figures based on Sony’s and Nintendo’s official earnings reports, so the nature of the numbers varies depending on the source. The debate essentially boils down to two points: (1) whether sales trends should be judged by monthly or weekly figures, and (2) whether the post-price-hike slowdown is just a temporary rebound from rush-buying, or a genuine, sustained decline. Some posters in the thread pointed out that sales have actually been trending upward since September, suggesting it’s hard to declare a firm trend from a single month’s numbers alone. The discussion also touches on how the year-end shopping season and next year’s lineup of major titles — the new Kirby game, Pokémon, and Xenoblade — are likely to shape sales momentum going forward.
